I'm still having these problems after upgrading to Gutsy. I have a Pentium D 830 with an ATI radeon X600 (RV380). I was using the open source radeon DRI drivers with aiglx to run compiz-fusion. Yesterday I decided to try switching back to the restricted ATI driver and xgl. Haven't had a crash since. So the radeon driver or aiglx might be part of the puzzle.
