[Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons, system menu

2009-11-27 Thread David Wood
As much as I do agree that going back on the old way of including icons
on every menu item possible is a good (both productively and
aesthetically) change, I do feel that the lack of icons on actions on
the main panel menu items is a step backwards in aesthetics (see
screenshot-1), and feels to a user as if the icon should be there,
because the other items all have icons, and the option to change their
icon is in the menu editor. I therefore propose that 'essential' icons,
present across almost all programs should have icons, but 'non-
essential' icons should no. I believe that these 'essential' icons
should be limited to the following: File: New, Open, Save, Save As,
Print, Print Preview, and the recent files list; Edit: Undo, Redo, Copy
and Paste; View: None; Search: Find...; and Help: Contents and About
(the icon for which I think should be changed to the actions/gtk-info
icon). Of course this is simply my opinion as a Ubuntu user, and should
of course be put to community review, but could you please create a
system to put this to review. Alternatively this feature could be
implemented with a option in the menu editor (right click on panel menu
-> Edit Menus) with "Enable icons for all menu items", and a checkbox in
System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Interface with the option to
"Show icons on common menu items"

Thank you.

[Bug 561450] [NEW] Incorrect print rendering for table headings with table borders collapsed

2010-04-12 Thread David Wood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2)
Gecko/20100123 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2)
Gecko/20100123 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.6

When printing a table that covers more than one page, and border-
collapse set to collapse, on pages after the first the vertical border
in elements covers the entire table, and the width of horizontal
borders does not change from the default width. On print preview,
the same happens, except the problem only occurs for one 'chunk' of the
render, i.e. scrolling faster causes the problem to occur for a longer
distance down the page.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download the html attachment
2. Open in firefox
3. View the print preview, or print the document.

Actual Results:
Results are different to expected (as described above)

Expected Results:
The print output should be similar to the view on screen, and the same across
all page (excluding data)

[Bug 498500] [NEW] Ubuntu server crashes with no display

2009-12-19 Thread David Wood
Public bug reported:

When leaving ubuntu server 9.10 powered on without a display it crashes
~10 minutes after the last time the keyboard was pressed. Any connected
SSH connections freeze and no key presses are displayed, ping requests
fail and if one then connects a display it stays in power-save mode.
However, if a monitor is connected at startup it will never crash. Only
way to start it again is to hold the power button until it turns off,
then power on again.

[Bug 1572801] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Unity desktop uses much more ram than Ubuntu 15.10

2017-01-14 Thread david wood
I see a lot of chatter that is likely confusion related to the leak
manifestations, and the false belief that eliminating X or Y memory
consumer "fixed" the problem. The proper test is probably to leave a
computer running, idle for 24-48 hours; if you begin swapping and
running out of RAM while taking no action, you are still afflicted.
Anyone who has not done that will not know if the issue is fixed.

As this leads to swap thrashing for anyone who leaves their computer
running (which is many people), this software bug is leading to real-
dollar hardware damage (as write spam kills flash memory drives).

[Bug 1662860] Re: /sbin/ldconfig.real: /usr/lib/nvidia-375/libEGL.so.1 is not a symbolic link

2017-04-13 Thread David Wood
LibEGL.so.1 isn't a symbolic link but should be. I had an issue with a
program that required EGL and could not find any capabilities with
nvidia-375.

I repaired the issue and now have working EGL with these commands:
mv libEGL.so.1 libEGL.so.1.orig
ln -s libEGL.so.375.39 libEGL.so.1

This leads me to believe that libEGL.so.1 should be a link to
libEGL.so.375.39.

Future updates to nvidia packages would do best to follow suit of
course. :)

Additional information available on request.

Re: [Bug 727143] Re: unity-window-decorator crashes with SIGSEGV when closing Java windows

2012-05-14 Thread david wood
Yup. Something similar is back. Confirmed with Canonical packaged IcedTea 7
as well. Several crash reports sent back.

It doesn't express quite the same way. For instance, a modal dialog used to
reliably trigger it. Now, window creation in general just seems risky.

[Bug 1354975] Re: iwlwifi Intel 7260 Wifi disconnects

2014-10-18 Thread david wood
X1 Carbon 2014, Ubuntu 14.04, Intel 7260 wireless module, was definitely
severely affected by this bug.

Have been "relatively" stable with:

1. In the /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d directory in the file wireless I changed in
the end of the file with two off so that there is no wireless powersave:
case $1 in
true) wireless_powersave off ;;
false) wireless_powersave off ;;
*) exit $NA ;;
esac
2. I also blacklisted wireless power management creating blacklist file :
sudo nano /etc/pm/config.d/blacklist
HOOK_BLACKLIST="wireless"
3. Kernel from Seth Forshee,
http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/iwl-ltr/trusty/ - In other words,
3.13.0-37_3.13.0-37.64+iwlltr0001
4. loaded firmware version 22.24.8.0 op_mode iwlmvm
5. linux-firmware 1.127.7

By this I mean, definitely able to stress the network and only 1-3
incidents of failure within 3 days, which is at least a couple orders of
magnitude better than stock 14.04, and I can't say for certain yet if it
isn't just working now. I have a subjective sense that the wifi is still
not completely solid, but no hard evidence. I have not yet observed a
difference between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz (or N/AC or different channels, etc).

If there's anything else it'd be useful to report - or test - please
don't hesitate to ask.

[Bug 50093] Re: Some sysctl's are ignored on boot

2011-11-08 Thread david wood
All documentation on the net referring to changing certain settings in
/etc/sysctl.conf such as net.ipv4.netfilter.ip_conntrack_max is wrong
for Ubuntu. In addition, workarounds suggesting that ordering of module
load vs. sysctl.conf execution can be helped by i.e. putting
ip_conntrack into /etc/modules also do not work.

I'm sure on some level this is Low priority - aka bury for 5 years and
never look at it again - and I can appreciate that this is not a simple
problem to properly solve. But left as is, this is just another mine
laid in the field for sysadmins foolish enough to use Ubuntu Server. I
respectfully suggest that it might be useful to make multiple attempts
to run sysctl -p at various milestones during the boot process.

[Bug 809661] [NEW] kernel bug in fs/dcache.c

2011-07-12 Thread David Wood
Public bug reported:

I think this was stimulated by autofs trying to unmount an nfs volume.
It's happened three times so far since I put 11.04 on my old Latitude
D400 laptop (Intel 855GM video). Nothing special was happening, I was
not even using the machine when the crash occurred. It apparently tries
to shut down - I found the Ubuntu and red/white dots going forever, and
a trace message on the console. /var/log/kernel.log excerpt to be
attached.

[Bug 727143] Re: unity-window-decorator crashes with SIGSEGV when closing Java windows

2011-06-21 Thread david wood
I would never tell anyone they "must" fix a bug - but I would strongly
suggest that Ubuntu prominently indicate on the Natty download pages
that it currently doesn't work very well with Java. Then I'd take the
notice down if/when the bug is ever fixed.

That's just helping to save people time by letting them know when to
avoid Natty. I think being a good neighbor in this way could be done in
minutes, and I'm sure it would be much appreciated.

[Bug 775430] Re: kernel bug: segfault in unity-window-decorator

2011-06-03 Thread david wood
Oddly enough, I seem to be able to get this to happen 100% consistently
when clicking the final Commit button, when committing project changes
via subversion in the Java-based IntelliJ Idea IDE.

Strange, I know - but since I finally figured it out, I've done it over
and over again as an experiment, and it is 100% reliable. I work in that
IDE all day and make many thousands of UI interactions with it,
including dozens or hundreds of button presses. It always worked
flawlessly in Ubuntu before now, and still does, with exactly this one
exception. That one, specific button in the entire IDE crashes the unity
window decorator every time. I'm talking i.e.:

unity-window-de[2275]: segfault at 318 ip 00415d6f sp
7fffbcd51af0 error 6 in unity-window-decorator[40+1b000]

Pressing it via both keyboard shortcut and mouse click trigger it. I
should add, the functioning of the IDE itself is never affected.

The specific - and observable and debuggable - nature of this may
provide a clue as to what is making unity crash.

[Bug 603758] Re: WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.35/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/radeon_fence.c:235 radeon_fence_wait+0x23e/0x290 [radeon]()

2010-07-16 Thread David Wood
Also occurs to me, and occurs very often, sometimes over five times a
day. Apport always wants to report the bug after the screen flashes
black a few times, and then some font characters appear wrongly. AMD64
installation of Ubuntu Maverick. Appears to be a regression, and does
not occur for me when choosing the 2.6.35-4 kernel from the GRUB list
(hold shift after powering on computer to view)
