[Bug 397106] [NEW] Browse fails to connect to internet even though machine is connected

2009-07-08 Thread David Robert Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar

Browse does not work in Ubuntu Hardy. I can connect to the Internet
using the terminal and run a session of lynx but browse does not work. I
raised this on the mailing list and was told "Sugar is supposed to be
wireless and on a laptop". This really restricts Sugar and there are a
lot of kids who would get sugar-ubuntu, if it was on a PC. Surely this
is why it is being ported?

[Bug 397115] [NEW] Sound not working in Sugar Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.3

2009-07-08 Thread David Robert Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar

The Ubuntu sound sub-system was crashing Sugar a while back. I raised
this issue in the forums and it was fixed. Result - no sound in sugar!.
Sound should be a unique educational experience. Sound should help kids
to learn, giving hints, creating feedback loops and so-on. Where is the
sound settings in the control panel? Not there in Hardy.

2010-02-02 Thread David Robert Lewis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 488699 ***

Me too. Same problem. I tried updating from https://launchpad.net
/%7Eerez-volk/+archive/nautilus which is a ppa which claims to patch the
Eel_critical bug. The Eel-crtical warning no longer appears, but I get
the three marshaller warnings.

** (nautilus:9770): WARNING **: No marshaller for signature of signal
'UploadFinished'

** (nautilus:9770): WARNING **: No marshaller for signature of signal
'DownloadFinished'

Nautilus is unresponsive. I've tried removing and reinstalling. Deleting
.nautilus and gfs-metadata but to no avail. Still stuck with
unresponsive nautilus as per the above.

In general, files in the 10-*.conf range come from the procps package and

[Bug 440875] Re: "SDL failed to open audio: no available audio device" when selecting PulseAudio as audio driver

2010-02-23 Thread David Robert Lewis
libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio is installed, but still have the above
problem when using KDEnlive.

Another bug fix as related in this 2007 posting:
http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/bug_view_advanced_page.php?bug_id=31

which involves installing libsdl1.2debian-all and removing
libsdl1.2debian-oss

Which is a big problem for me. If I do this, half my system wants to
uninstall itself. I have a lot of games and gigabytes of data which will
simply uninstall. Surely ubuntu should be fixed by default? This seems as if
people have gotten used to living with a bug workaround instead of getting it
right in karmic, thus causing a lot more trouble the further we move forward.
My sound was not too bad in hardy. It is worse in karmic.

[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2010-03-09 Thread David Robert Lewis
All this security is a real hassle. Just as I was beginning to love the
new GDM, after discovering how to change the background, I foolishly
installed some tool claiming to be the answer to GDM2 configuration.
Result is I have a frozen GDM greeter, which refuses to show user
password entry box. It just freezes except for the disability panel. I
have tried reinstalling several times. I have also tried deleting the
usr/share/gdm folder. To no avail. About to tear out the remains of my
hair over this. Please, some solution for reinstalling GDM and bypassing
all the aweful Windows-like security.

[Bug 694453] [NEW] Downloaded files missing links and/reference to location

2010-12-26 Thread David Robert Lewis
Public bug reported:

I have a huge folder of downloaded files. Problem is, most of the file
descriptions are useless. The files get downloaded over time because of
slow-bandwidth, so I forget where I get them from or what application
they refer to.

I do not have any clue which website the files originated from and would
have to manually google the file name, hoping to get a reference
somewhere.

Surely there must be a way of keeping track of the *links to the files*
when they are downloaded, so that I can backtrack to the reference
material?

I consider this a bug, since the Ubuntu Download folder should be more
intelligent and be able to keep track of files contaiined

[Bug 599800] [NEW] software-properties-gtk lacks fails to list ppas in alphabetical order

2010-06-29 Thread David Robert Lewis
Public bug reported:

Expected behaviour:

Other Software - tab view lists ppas in alphabetical order.

software-properties-gtk is now the only place on the system where ppas
are consolidated. This problem has been around since jaunty/karmic and
is caused by there being two methods by which ppas are entered into the
system. The old method is via the software sources and the new method is

[Bug 360011] Re: No hardware sound devices in pulse audio

2010-07-02 Thread David Robert Lewis
The persistant problem since Karmic seems to be partially solved by
reseting puleaudio by moving the puleaudio config files

rm -r ~/.pulse

But in Lucid it this fix failed and it failed to see my hardware. Had to
sudo killall pulseaudio.

If I open pavu volume control, I can see various options now under
configuration, but changing the settings there results in freezing.

[Bug 35463] Re: Folders have wrong default program and the association can't be changed

2011-01-30 Thread David Robert Lewis
Ok, problem solved, a wee bit more complicated than the previous
solution:

1. Open Home folder

2. Right click on problem folder

3 Choose Open With

4. Choose Other Application...

5. Make sure "remember this application for folder files" is clicked

Anybody out there know why we can't do this in three steps, via File >
Properties?

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

* Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not
enable again some interfaces
 * Reconfiguring network interfaces...   [ OK ]

Doesn't bring up network. I still have to pon dsl-provider
