[Bug 97588] Re: feisty beta mounts all partitions

2008-07-28 Thread DLCBurggraaff
In Hardy the Storage (and Multimedia) tabs are no longer available in the
"Removable Drives and Media Preferences", and I have not been able to find an
other dialog with the "Mount removable drives when hot-plugged" and "Mount
removable media when inserted" options.
However, the "noauto" lines in /etc/fstab are obeyed now.

This bug can be closed.

[Bug 299454] [NEW] Itrepid Ibex: Nautilus list mode quick search inconsistency.

2008-11-18 Thread DLCBurggraaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Intrepid: In Nautilus list mode navigate to e.g. /etc and in the right (list)
pane type the letter "s". In the LRH corner a text entry box pops up and the
"samba" directory is highlighted in the middle of the list pane. Now double
click on the "samba" directory name to open that directory. Instead the topmost
directory on list pane ("proftpd" in my case) is opened ...
Sometimes first doing a single click helps, but often this single click already
opens the topmost directory.
The workaround is to hit to close the text popup (or wait for it to close
by itself) before doing the double click.

In Hardy the single or double click closed the text popup and a next
double click was required to open the directory.

 Status: New

[Bug 294555] Re: with ubuntu8.10 the filebrowser Nautilus 2.24.1 is awfully slow.

2008-11-24 Thread DLCBurggraaff
I see the same symptom on my x86_64 systems.
Hardy was not lightning fast, but workable. After upgrading to Intrepid however
things have become unworkable. E.g. Nautilus (List View 50%) takes 35 seconds
to open /usr/lib, from there 17 seconds to open vmware, and from there 50
seconds to go up to /usr/lib again.
This is reproducible on an nvidia as well as on an ICH9 based system.

[Bug 295408] Re: nautilus expanding the first visible folder after using keyboard to select a file

2009-06-17 Thread DLCBurggraaff
The initial bug report in #49567 (the activity up to and including 2008) is
different from #295408. It looks to me that that bug is resolved - I do not see
the behavior in 9.04.
The second bug report in #49567 (the activity from 2009) is a duplicate of
#295408.

[Bug 295408] Re: nautilus expanding the first visible folder after using keyboard to select a file

2009-05-20 Thread DLCBurggraaff
@John Dickinson:
Clicking away from the folder list window (frame, I would say) indeed is the
workaround - clicking on e.g. the side pane, the title bar or the like and then
double clicking on the directory in the folder list frame opens the correct
folder.

The sheer annoyance now is a mere nuisance :))

[Bug 97588] Re: feisty beta mounts all partitions

Because I did not see an option to do so.

Actually a few days ago I noticed that a partition on /dev/sdb (the
external USB disk) for which there is no entry in /etc/fstab still gets
mounted. However, I can live with that (adding a noauto entry with a
non-existing mount point inhibited the automount).

Further isolated the cause of the problem

Even with an empty startx session (no nautilus, no teminal) for root the
problem occurs - the "extra" mounts appear as icons on the desktop.

Opened System > Preferences > Removable Drives and Media > Storage and
under Removable Storage deselected "Mount removable drives when hot-plugged"

The "mount, fdisk, fstab etc." attachment was created via "script
thescript" - because of the escapes in the prompts this file is
indicated as BIN, but it is a harmless text file.

I added the following umounts to /etc/rc.local, but that does not work -
I think the mounts are done hotplug (or rather the upstart equivalent)
after /etc/rc.local is run:

umount /dev/sda1
umount /dev/sda6
umount /dev/sda10
umount /dev/sda11
umount /dev/sda12
umount /dev/sdb1
umount /dev/sdb2

I found the "extra" mounts to occur when root logs in.
Doing the umounts in /root/.profile does not work.
Created the /root/bin/_umounts script to do the umount "manually".

[Bug 587556] [NEW] nautilus slow start after boot

2010-05-30 Thread DLCBurggraaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Xubuntu Lucid + Nautilus + Gedit

I reboot from a session with 1 Nautilus and 1 Terminal window and log in as the
same user.
Until recently it took 10 seconds before the Terminal window came up,
immediately followed by a split-second replacement of my wallpaper by an ugly
brown colour and then Nautilus came up.
These 10 seconds are longish, but below the irritation threshold.
Since a few days however the wallpaper kludge and Nautilus take an additional
25 seconds!

[Bug 587556] Re: nautilus slow start after boot

2010-05-30 Thread DLCBurggraaff
Subsequent Nautilus starts (from this or another user) are immediate.

Actually I am not sure Nautilus is the culprit here: When rebooting from
a session with only a Terminal window (or no window at all) the
wallpaper kludge also happens after 35 (10 +25) seconds.

I had a look at Applications > Settings > Xfce 4 Settings Manager >
Session and Startup but for as far as I know nothing was changed there -
see the appended screenshots.

In Karmic Alpha 6 proftpd still cannot be installed, but the symptoms are
somewhat different.

proftpd synaptic wants to *remove* these dependencies ...

The answer as referred to by Jaka reads:

The proftpd package is a transitional meta package, and it is outdated,
so if you try and install that it will fail. the newly named package to
install is proftpd-basic and then any additional proftpd-mod-* files you
want to add functionality. proftpd-basic installs fine on up-to-date

[Bug 500314] [NEW] ristretto fails to display gifs

2009-12-25 Thread DLCBurggraaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ristretto

Xubuntu 9.10 x64 - using Nautilus as file manager

When rightclicking in Nautilus on a .gif and selecting ristretto as the
program to open the gif, one most of the time gets a blank (but for the
thumbnails) ristretto window. Sometimes one sees the gif flashing by
before the blank window, and sometimes an other non-gif file is
displayed.

/var/log/messages shows entries like:
Dec 25 10:48:22 riposo kernel: [ 3133.394241] ristretto[2393]: segfault at

[Bug 1860683] Re: initramfs hang after today's updates

2020-01-24 Thread DLCBurggraaff
It definitely is the initramfs. After successfully mounting the root
filesystem (sda10) the following messages are displayed:

-- /scripts/init-bottom/udev: line 25: nuke: not found
-- done.
-- init: line 303: run-init: not found
-- Target filesystem does not have requested /sbin/init.
-- init: line 303: run-init: not found (5*)
-- No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.

Yesterday's ext?fs updates triggered an initramfs rebuild. After restoring my
backup I reran those updates and had a good look at the initramfs rebuild
messages. I saw a complaint about a missing /lib/klibc-*.so file. And indeed
that file is missing.
I copied the /lib/klibc-wBFLvVtxy4xJqEadIBJMa78iJz8.so from an other Xubuntu
installation and reran things: *problem resolved*.

[Bug 1767822] [NEW] Xubuntu 18.04 : TigerVNC gives a black screen in the viewer

2018-04-29 Thread DLCBurggraaff
Public bug reported:

Xubuntu 18.04 : TigerVNC gives a black screen in the viewer.

In Xubuntu 16.04 I used the TigerVNC 1.8.0 debs as provided by upstream
(https://bintray.com/tigervnc/stable/tigervnc/1.8.0#files/ubuntu-16.04LTS%2Famd64).

For Xubuntu 18.04 however upstream points to the Ubuntu repositories. I
installed the 1.7.0
tigervnc-{common,viewer,{scraping,standalone}-server} debs I found
there.

I noticed that the /usr/bin/vncserver script was rewritten. Using this
new version (vncserver :60) gives a huge black screen in the viewer. It
looks like the ~/.vnc/config file is ignored and that X is not started.

Luckily the upstream vncserver (.orig) script is also provided. Using
that one gives a normally sized, but still black screen. It looks like
the ~/.vnc/config file honoured now, but that X is still not started.

There is nothing noteworthy in the ~/.vnc/:60.log file. The
~.xsession-errors file however reports:
-- Xsession: X session started for root at Sun Apr 29 17:47:33 CEST 2018
-- dbus-update-activation-environment: setting
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/user/0/bus
-- dbus-update-activation-environment: setting DISPLAY=:60
.
-- /usr/bin/x-session-manager: X server already running on display :60

[Bug 1767782] Re: Xubuntu 18.04 : delay during boot - random: crng init

2018-05-01 Thread DLCBurggraaff
I have a strong suspicion that the delay at boot is caused by the swap and/or
root partition(s) being re-initialized and therefore getting a new UUID ...

[Bug 1767782] Re: Xubuntu 18.04 : delay during boot - random: crng init

2018-05-03 Thread DLCBurggraaff
For a correct understanding: this re-initializing of the root and swap
partitions is the verification step of my backup procedure -- and my restore
procedure of course.

[Bug 1767782] Re: Xubuntu 18.04 : delay during boot - random: crng init

2018-05-04 Thread DLCBurggraaff
SOLVED !!! As per https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029598/xubuntu-18-04
-kernel-takes-long-to-boot/1029993 :

During boot messages it would say that it timed out waiting for resume
device *). Check in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume if there is UUID
in it like RESUME=some-uuid remove uuid and replace with "none" to be
RESUME=none. After that run sudo update-initramfs -u and it should be
good to go.

*) This message scrolls by so fast that it is impossible to read it in
its entirety and is not included in the /var/log/messages.
