Isolated the cause of the problem: 1) Start the system 2) On the gdm screen login as a non-root user : no "extra" mounts 3) Via Ctrl-Alt-F2 open a console 4) On that console login as root : no "extra" mounts 5) On that console issue "startx -- :1" : the "extra" mounts occur
