Because I did not see an option to do so. Actually a few days ago I noticed that a partition on /dev/sdb (the external USB disk) for which there is no entry in /etc/fstab still gets mounted. However, I can live with that (adding a noauto entry with a non-existing mount point inhibited the automount).
