[Bug 1641786] Re: Documentation on battery settings for 16.10 on battery reserve cut-off

2016-11-20 Thread Chris Perry
Hi janat08

Thanks for reporting this bug. We've done an update to the page (planned
for Ubuntu 17.04). I give a link to a copy of the page below. Does that
look OK to you? If you say Yes then I'll close this bug. Regards, Chris.

[Bug 1532537] Re: Impossible to choose language on help.ubuntu.com

2016-11-20 Thread Chris Perry
Could we add a note (or notes) then? I think that would help (multi-
lingual) users. Is help.ubuntu.com (the page) editable?

I suggest moving note 4 up to be note 1 and changing it so that it looks
like this:

"The HTML links above are available in many different languages. They
will be displayed in the preferred language specified by your browser.
If the preferred language is not available they will be displayed in
English. The Server Guide PDF and the Installation Guide are available
solely in English."

[Bug 1630272] Re: The "Official Documentation" for Ubuntu 16.04 does not include correct instructions on installing Printers.

2016-11-21 Thread Chris Perry
@Gunnar. In the desktop help we now cover adding a network printer (the
update planned for 17.04) but we don't cover the seven options below
"Find Network Printer" in the New Printer dialog box. I don't understand
what they do so I can't write them up. Can we mark this bug FIX
COMMITTED and work out how to cover the seven options if/when someone
files a bug about them not being documented?

[Bug 1631315] Re: Determining touchpad capabilities

2016-11-23 Thread Chris Perry
The text in mouse-touchpad-click.html referring to touchpads that
support multi-finger taps should be removed in 17.04 (see Bug #1617718)
so it will then be of less importance to determine touchpad
capabilities. Some users might find it useful however. Determining
touchpad capabilities is done via commands (not via the GUI) and the
desktop help doesn't usually cover commands. I'd say that this bug is
low priority.

[Bug 1645689] Re: Install Additional Software doesn't include info on single signon

2016-12-14 Thread Chris Perry
Yes you're right. Eg on 16.04 I don't have Hugo installed (Hugo is a
snap) and in Ubuntu Software Hugo does have a "details" page but it
doesn't give the source.

Another point is that snaps and non snaps are both listed in Ubuntu
Software and some packages are available in both formats. For example,
Hexchat is listed three times in Ubuntu Software (16.04) (I have the
snap installed but not the non snap). Two of the listings are installed
(so for the snap?) and one is not installed (so for the non snap?). I
also see that I'm not able to install the vlc snap (because it's not
available for i386).

I don't think snaps are mentioned in the 16.10 help. We'll need to
mention them in the 17.04 help?

[Bug 1649554] Re: Default Mallard element translated incorrectly

2016-12-14 Thread Chris Perry
On reflection I think it's best if writers say what kind of they
want. Eg if they want bullets, it's best if they say so, rather than
relying on defaults. And it's (slightly) clearer if another writer comes
along in a year or two and wants to change the text.

The fix does seem to have exposed some problems. Eg the procedure "Check

investigate some more and report back in a day or two. The command grep

[Bug 1649554] Re: Default Mallard element translated incorrectly

2016-12-15 Thread Chris Perry
About 60 pages in the desktop help use elements. (I listed them
using the command grep " seem straightforward. However, there's a
handful of unusual/complicated uses, which I may well leave alone. (If
in doubt, leave it alone.)

So far I've noticed three short procedures that have been wrongly marked
up using , so I'm planning to change those too. They'll be changed
to elements.

I'll just be changing markup (not the English text) so there is (surely)
no impact on the translators. This is basically a simple job (though
there are 60 pages to check). Can anything go wrong?

[Bug 1651233] [NEW] Inconsistent terminology for USB flash drive

2016-12-19 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

In the desktop help (development version - and very likely 16.10 too)
the terminology for USB flash drive is inconsistent. For example:

disk-format.html refers to "USB memory stick"
files-share.html refers to "USB flash drive"
backup-where.html refers to "USB memory key"
backup-why.html refers to "USB drive"
etc

This is confusing for users. I suggest we use just the most common term
("USB flash drive"?) and not give any of the synonyms.

Wikipedia seems to favour "USB flash drive":

[Bug 1651360] [NEW] Formatting a removable disk

2016-12-20 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

The GUI for the Disks application must have been changed in the last few
years so disk-format.html needs to be revised. The Disks application now
seems to hide as many of the technical details as it can (which in
theory I think is a good idea).

I have a problem in that when I format a USB flash drive using Disks
(Ubuntu 16.04) - no error is reported during formatting - but Ubuntu
then doesn't recognise the drive. When I create a partition and format
it using Gparted it works fine. Ive only tried this with one USB flash
drive, so the problem may be specific to that drive (or not). If Disks
doesn't work correctly, we can document how to format a removable disk
by using Gparted?

2016-12-20 Thread Chris Perry
We can copy (or link to) these instructions:

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu

I believe the Startup Disk Creator can't be used as a general tool for
creating bootable USB flash drives (eg I believe it can't be used with
an Arch Anywhere iso - well I tried it earlier this year and it didn't
work). Does it (running in Ubuntu) work with any flavour of Ubuntu, or
just Ubuntu?

[Bug 1651360] Re: Formatting a removable disk

2016-12-22 Thread Chris Perry
@Gunnar. Yes I'll make a note to check what other pages need to be
changed (presumably you mean other pages that describe how to use the
Disks application?). I think it's straightforward to revise disk-
format.html.

On a related point: it seems to me that it will be quite common for
users to want to "reuse" a removable disk - that's what I wanted to do
which led me to discover that disk-format.html was out of date - (the
steps would be something like this: format it, create a partition, and
mount the partition). Can I create a new (short) page to describe this?
It can be linked to from disk.html?

[Bug 1651360] Re: Formatting a removable disk

2016-12-22 Thread Chris Perry
Yes that sounds OK. Can I change the title of the page to something like
"Wipe the data off a removable disk and reuse it"? My thinking is that
"reuse" (or some such such word) is a task-orientated verb, so should be
in the title. "Wipe" is task-orientated too but the users who want to
"reuse" aren't necessarily bothered to "wipe".

[Bug 1741502] Re: Unity launcher disappears with all windows when I move mouse pointers on the launcher

2018-01-06 Thread Chris Perry
This sounds like the problem I have. I did a system update on Thursday
and the problems started once I rebooted. Additional problems that I
have are that Alt + Tab no longer works (it should display the task
list). I couldn't find any way of switching tasks except to click two or
three times on the appropriate icon on the Launcher. Another problem is
that Shutdown no longer works from the system menu so I shutdown using
the shutdown command in a terminal. The problems switching tasks make
ubuntu near unusable on my 16.04 laptop so I'm now using a spare laptop
running 17.10.

[Bug 1236299] Re: ssh-agent env variables not set when not using Bourne shell

2014-04-25 Thread Chris Perry
Thank you so much for posting this bug and solution Andrew! I just
wasted several hours trying to hunt this down. The number of hacky
solutions being used by people to get around this is really quite
disturbing. I wonder why this 3 character fix didn't make it into
14.04... woulda saved me a bunch of time.

[Bug 1617718] Re: Desktop Guide Middle-click Tips & tricks outdated

2016-10-07 Thread Chris Perry
This bug concerns middle click - but a similar point surely applies to
right click. Logically it would make sense if the following is correct:

If you have a touchpad and "Tap to click" is turned on then:

1. If your touchpad supports multi-finger taps, middle-click by tapping
with three fingers at once otherwise middle-click by tapping once in the
top right corner.

2. If your touchpad supports multi-finger taps, right-click by tapping
with two fingers at once, otherwise right-click by tapping once in the
bottom right corner.

[Bug 1631315] [NEW] Determining touchpad capabilities

2016-10-07 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

In mouse-touchpad-click.html we say "If your touchpad supports multi-
finger taps, ...". But does it or not? It's actually easy to determine a
touchpad's capabilities using xinput. I give a link below. Could we
document it briefly or give a link? Apparently the basics can be covered
in about ten lines. I did a quick internet search but the best link I
found was this one to the Arch Linux wiki (which I don't think we can
link to from the desktop help!).

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics#Using_xinput_to_determine_touchpad_capabilities

PS. The xinput output for my touchpad is:

Synaptics Capabilities (295): 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 1

so my touchpad does not support multi-finger taps.

[Bug 1599264] Re: [SRU] "When power is critically low" setting does nothing

2016-10-08 Thread Chris Perry
I think it should be straightforward for me to update the desktop help
(17.04). However, I need to check (in simple terms) what ubuntu now does
when the power gets low. When the battery gets to 10% ubuntu will
(attempt to) suspend? Is that correct? If the computer has problems
suspending ubuntu will not know that and will still (attempt to)
suspend? Is that correct? I'm asking because I'm planning to state what
happens in the desktop help. Here's the link for the current version of
the affected page:

[Bug 1631718] [NEW] Middle-click emulation quirk

2016-10-09 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

The page mouse-middleclick.html gives a link to:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#A2-button_Mice

It seems to be a software workaround for a hardware bug that affects
some mice (presumably pressing the left and right mouse buttons at the
same time doesnt generate middle-click until the workaround is applied).
Is the hardware bug still common? Are the instructions still correct? If
yes to both questions then I think the software workaround should be
incorporated into the desktop help (we shouldn't be relying on a link
into the middle of an old wiki page - eg I know what "natty and newer"
means but people new to Ubuntu won't know).

[Bug 1599264] Re: [SRU] "When power is critically low" setting does nothing

2016-10-11 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Gunnar, I take your point that I'm going beyond fixing this bug - but
that (ideally) is what a good tech writer does.

I think here's the answer to my question (link below). The default
setting is "suspend" - yes I've checked 16.04 and that is correct.
However, there's a bug so that when the setting is "suspend" Ubuntu
shuts down when power is critically low. So can I fix this bug and also
state that ubuntu by default shuts down when power is critically low? I
believe that unless the user fiddles with the gnome settings, which
aren't documented in the desktop help, there's no possibility of
suspend, so can I remove the info about suspend on this page. In that
case it will be a very short page!

[Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?

2017-02-09 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Gunnar, I'm proposing to make minor changes to the following pages:

addremove-install.html
addremove-remove.html
disk-partitions.html

As regards installing and removing applications I'm proposing to say
that there are two package formats: Debian packages and snap packages.
In order to install or remove an application available as a snap package
the user has to log on to Ubuntu One. Snap packages have advantages over
Debian packages (I'm not planning to say what they are) so it's
recommended that where there's a choice of format the user installs the
snap package, which should be the first of the two applications listed.

The change to disk-partitions.html will be three or four words only. I'm
not planning to say what loop devices are. It's not relevant to that
page.

What do you think of this proposal?

[Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?

2017-02-09 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Gunnar, thanks for your reply. Yes that's fine. For 17.04 I'll drop
the bit about snap packages having advantages over Debian packages and
I'll drop the bit about recommending the snap package (in the case that
both formats are available). But I'll keep the bit that mentions that
some applications are available in both formats.

The changes are minor. I should have time to do them in the next day or
two.

[Bug 114521] Re: No help or documentation available for Ubuntu installer

2017-01-26 Thread Chris Perry
@Gunnar. Can I do this bug? I was planning a short description of the
main different ways of installing desktop Ubuntu - I think there are
many different ways (eg the alternative downloads) so I wasn't planning
to try to mention all of them - with links to detailed documentation
(where such documentation exists). As an example link the recommended
system requirements for the latest desktop LTS are here:

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

I think the links will have to be to Canonical-maintained pages or up-
to-date wiki pages.

I wasn't planning to cover the details of installation at all (choose
keyboard layout, enter username, etc, etc). I'll leave that stuff to the
linked documents or the installer itself, which is now pretty good.

Does the above sound OK? If not I suggest we discuss alternatives via
email and then when we've decided what to do I can update this bug.

[Bug 114521] Re: No help or documentation available for Ubuntu installer

2017-01-26 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Gunnar, below I give my (revised) idea of a "short description". It's
basically links to www.ubuntu.com but www.ubuntu.com doesnt organise the
info in this way (why not?).

[ Start of page ]

The process is typically this:

Check the recommended system requirements:

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Download the ISO.

Burn a DVD:

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-ubuntu

or create a bootable USB stick:

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu

Check your computer is compatible with Ubuntu:

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/try-ubuntu-before-you-install

Back up your data.

Install Ubuntu:

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-desktop

[ End of page ]

Strictly speaking info on installing Ubuntu doesn't belong in the
desktop help but in my opinion it's an obvious place to look for it. As
far as I can see there's no exact equivalent to the above text at
www.ubuntu.com (why not?). If there was we could just link to it.

Would something like this be of use to (some) users?

OK. So can we change the status of this bug to "Won't Fix" (as you

at all (which includes any overview of installation and documentation of
any installation-related problems, such as the ones you mentioned
above)? If you agree, can you change the bug status?

Thanks for the github link. I'll have a look and I may well file an

[Bug 1659824] Re: screen-shot-record.html is inaccurate

2017-01-28 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Gunnar, I'm running 16.04. My points simply relate to terminology.
The window has the title "Screenshot" so surely it doesn't make sense
for the page to say "In the Take Screenshot window ..."?

I always try to use the terminology used by the GUI. Here the GUI uses
"screen", which I think is OK. So surely it's not a good idea for the
page to use "desktop" in step 2 - with no mention of "screen".

In my opinion these confusions over terminology make the page more
difficult to read.

[Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?

2017-02-07 Thread Chris Perry
Another point that may be relevant to this bug is that some applications
(eg vlc, hexchat) are listed twice in Ubuntu Software (I'm running 16.04
amd64). This will surely confuse users. Even if the user knows that one
is the snap and the other is the non snap it's not immediately obvious
which is which. (Snaps seem to be much bigger than non snaps, so the
bigger package (of two) will be the snap.)

[Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?

2017-02-08 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Will, could you give the Docs Team some guidance about what to say
about snaps in the the 17.04 desktop help? A user of the desktop help
will typically install and remove packages using Ubuntu Software (not
the command line). So as regards the desktop help I'm only concerned
about how snaps affect the GUI. My main concern is to avoid confusing
people who read the desktop help (which includes people who follow
procedures in the desktop help). As I understand it the sources of
possible confusion are:

1. Some packages are listed twice in Ubuntu Software (one is the snap
and one is the deb package). In such a case how does the user know which
to install? What do we say in the 17.04 desktop help?

2. When users try to install a snap via Ubuntu Software they get asked
to log on to Ubuntu One. The 16.10 desktop help documents installing
packages using Ubuntu Software but doesn't document log on to Ubuntu
One. What do we say in the 17.04 desktop help?

3. The 16.10 desktop help mentions that the Disks application lists
"hard disks, CD/DVD drives, and other physical devices", - I'm reading
this as meaning everything listed is a physical device - which is not
true any more since at present Disks lists snaps too. What do we say in
the 17.04 desktop help?

[Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?

2017-02-08 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Will, thanks for your reply. So you think it's fine to document
points 1, 2, and 3 above in the 17.04 desktop help? The reason I'm
asking is that once Ubuntu 17.04 is released the 17.04 desktop help is
basically available, without corrections, to the world for the (short)
life of Ubuntu 17.04. So we don't want to document things that may be
changed soon after they're documented.

I think documenting points 1, 2, and 3 briefly should be
straightforward.

[Bug 1630272] Re: The "Official Documentation" for Ubuntu 16.04 does not include correct instructions on installing Printers.

2016-11-16 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Pete, I've done a new draft (link below). Could you check the draft
again?

I added a step (step 8) about choosing a driver and installing it. I
also added a brief note/warning about the "Device URI" problem. I think
the warning applies to people who haven't followed the procedure, since
anyone who followed the procedure won't have the problem?

It sounds to me as if the "Device URI" problem is a software bug. Would
you be willing to file another bug (a non-documentation bug) for it?

Regards,

Chris.

[Bug 1200381] Re: "Security & Privacy" panel in System Settings doesn't have any help topics

2017-01-22 Thread Chris Perry
@Gunnar. Can I create a page to document the Security & Privacy panel?
It will be quite short. The main point of the page will (hopefully) be
to add a small amount of useful info that isn't obvious from the tabs
and the info on them. I'll just be covering the Security & Privacy
panel, I won't be attempting to cover security and privacy in general.

[Bug 1658785] [NEW] Snap documentation in 17.04?

2017-01-23 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

Do we say anything about snaps in the 17.04 desktop help and if so what
do we say? If snaps are experimental and subject to change then perhaps
we should say nothing? Below I give some points about snaps worth
thinking about (as regards how we document them):

The logon to Ubuntu One in Ubuntu Software when one tries to install a
snap will surely create confusion. I saw one example on the #ubuntu
channel where people were confused by it (with good reason in my
opinion). At present you don't have to logon to Ubuntu One if you
install a snap from the command line. Why are Ubuntu Software and the
command line treated differently in this respect?

I don't know much about snaps but in the manual for the snap command
there are options to buy a snap and log on to the snap store. I would
imagine that at present there are no snaps that one has to pay for - but
there will be soon?

Snaps are visible in the Disks application as "devices". This is very
confusing in my opinion.

[Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?

2017-01-24 Thread Chris Perry
Hi Gunnar, thanks for your reply. We don't need to decide what (if
anything) to do until shortly before Documentation String Freeze (March
16th 2017). I suggest we stick to general principles (as regards
maintaining the documentation). Eg if one of our procedures has changed
we normally correct the page and if we see something that we think will
cause a good deal of confusion for users we normally document it. Of
course the meaning of "a good deal of confusion" is subjective.

Thanks for the link to bug #1637984. It's not assigned to anyone, so
presumably it won't be fixed any time soon? I see that, due to the Disks
application listing snaps, disk-partitions.html is no longer entirely
correct. It says "... In the left pane, you will find a list of hard
disks, CD/DVD drives, and other physical devices."

[Bug 1651233] Re: Inconsistent terminology for USB flash drive

2016-12-29 Thread Chris Perry
@Gunnar. When the status is set to Opinion this bug drops off the list
of ubuntu-docs bugs. I think the bug is worth keeping in mind. Can we
set the status so that it stays on the list? Personally I'd set status =
Triaged, importance = Low.

If I update a page for other reasons I may as well make the correction.
For example, I need to update disk-format.page and I notice that disk-
format.page manages to use "USB memory stick" and "USB flash drive".

[Bug 1569532] Re: Describe the Startup Disk Creator

2017-01-01 Thread Chris Perry
So shall I create a new page to document this (yes it should be a short
page)? And link it in to the help by adding a link to addremove.html? I
think this is where people will probably look (in the desktop help) for
the info (though it relates to installation of an operating system, not
installation of software in an existing operating system).

2017-01-04 Thread Chris Perry
I'll revise these pages too (revisions needed due to change to Disks GUI
and apparently replacement of the Disk Utility application):

disk-partitions.html (current version of the page refers to the "Disk
Utility application", etc)

disk-benchmark.html (probably very minor changes: one menu option has
changed name - the page doesn't say what the user does with the
benchmark results - but that is matter for another bug).

[Bug 1654238] [NEW] Switch to "English (United States)" doesn't work correctly

2017-01-05 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

I wanted to switch from "English (United Kingdom)" to "English (United
States)". Ubuntu 16.04. In Language Support I moved "English (United
States)" to the top of the list and then logged off and logged back in -
but my language was still "English (United Kingdom)". Eg the trash icon
was still called "Rubbish Bin".

The change only takes effect if one, in addition to the move described
above, moves "English (United Kingdom" below "English" in the list in
Language Support. This is a bug. The switch from "English (United
Kingdom)" to "English (United States)" should take effect immediately -
as I believe switches to other languages (eg French) do.

[Bug 1637126] [NEW] Edit wireless connection needs revision

2016-10-27 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

This page (link below) needs to be revised so that it uses the current
names of the tabs and controls. For example (in 16.04) the tabs are
General, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Security, IPv4 Settings, and IPv6 Settings. The
page doesn't use the current name for the first three tabs but does use
the current name for the last two tabs.

If a control is documented the current name of the control should (of
course) be used.

[Bug 1537551] Re: official ubuntu docomentation that explains how to create wireless hot spot is not correct.

2016-10-27 Thread Chris Perry
I tried it all out in 16.04 (as far as I could) and it appeared to work.
The only device I had to try to connect was my phone and that couldn't
detect the SSID (even when I manually entered the details). I read an
internet comment saying that some devices can't connect to this type of
hotspot. If my laptop was broadcasting the SSID correctly then another
device could have connected, so then I would have got as far as Doug got
in his test. If a device can connect but can't share the internet
connection then it's surely a software bug not a documentation bug? Does
anyone know the package name? If I have the package name I can check the
bugs database and if necessary file a new (software) bug.

[Bug 1637126] Re: Edit wireless connection needs revision

2016-10-30 Thread Chris Perry
Some notes on terminology: At some point "Wireless" must have been
changed to "Wi-Fi" in the GUI but the desktop help wasn't changed. I
briefly checked terminology outside Ubuntu. For example, Wikipedia uses
"Wi-Fi" not "WiFi" or "wifi" or "wi-fi". I haven't done a global replace
in the help of "wireless" to "Wi-Fi" since terms such as "wireless card"
or "wireless network" seem to be widely used outside Ubuntu. I think any
occurrences of "wi-fi" etc in the help should be changed to "Wi-Fi".
Let's be consistent.

[Bug 977251] Re: "Edit a wireless connection" section is missing "Shared to other computers" option

2016-10-30 Thread Chris Perry
I think I have a basic understanding of what the "Shared to other
computers" option does. If the option is set, can more than one "client"
computer use the connection at the same time? If someone gives me the
answer I plan to add the information to the help.

[Bug 1637861] Re: Description of Ubuntu Software needs update

2016-10-31 Thread Chris Perry
I had a quick look at this. Ubuntu Software seems to list a wide
selection of packages (it uses the term "application" but some of the
things it lists are not in my opinion applications). It doesn't restrict
itself to particular repositories. For example, I see that some packages
from Multiverse and Universe are listed.

I see that it doesn't list fop (from Universe) or docbook (again from
Universe). I think this point about missing packages is a general
problem (it won't just confuse writers looking for fop or docbook). For
example, mbrola (from Multiverse) - something to do with speech
synthesis - sounds as if it might have a small group of enthusiasts -
but Ubuntu Software doesn't list it (though confusingly it does list a
frontend to mbrola).

I'd say that a user might quickly outgrow Ubuntu Software and then
he/she needs the full story from Synaptic.

[Bug 964727] Re: Doc page on mouse keys makes a misleading point about right-clicking

2016-12-10 Thread Chris Perry
I've revised the page. Mouse keys seems to be partly documented in
various places on the internet but I couldn't find a full description
anywhere. My main source was the wikipedia mouse keys page (link below).
I've copied this page in using the terminology "mouse keys" - though
perhaps it should be "Mouse Keys".

In my opinion the page (that is, mouse-mousekeys.html) is mainly about
using mouse keys where the keyboard has a "real" numeric keypad. As the
page mentions, I know that some laptop keyboards can simulate a numeric
keypad.

I haven't checked the details of text that I haven't changed - though I
did make a small correction to step 4 of the procedure.

[Bug 1649554] [NEW] Default Mallard element translated incorrectly

2016-12-13 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

When "type" is not specified in a Mallard element the Mallard
spec says it should display as a bulleted (unordered) list. This is true
when the .page file is displayed using yelp but not when the .page file
is translated into HTML (where you get a numbered list). This is a bug.
The HTML should be displayed as specified by the Mallard spec.

Here's an example element without "type" specified.

  GTK_MESSAGE_INFO
  GTK_MESSAGE_WARNING
  GTK_MESSAGE_QUESTION
  GTK_MESSAGE_ERROR
  GTK_MESSAGE_OTHER

Here's the link to the relevant page of the Mallard spec:

[Bug 1645689] Re: Install Additional Software doesn't include info on single signon

2016-12-13 Thread Chris Perry
@Gunnar. Yes it works now. As a test (with 16.10 running very slowly in
virtualbox) I installed a snap called qownnotes. As someone says in bug
#1616943, you log onto Ubuntu One and then Authenticate. I couldn't see
any indication in the listing in Ubuntu Software that qownnotes is a
snap. But to an average user they just want a named application, they're
not bothered how it's packaged?

[Bug 1645689] Re: Install Additional Software doesn't include info on single signon

2016-12-13 Thread Chris Perry
Sorry, I was wrong about not being able to distinguish snaps from non-
snaps from within Ubuntu Software. If you click on the name of a
package, you get to a "details" page, which (amongst other things) gives
the package source. The snaps that I checked (qownnotes (confusingly
listed as notes) and hexchat) have source = "Ubuntu Snappy Store".

[Bug 1649554] Re: Default Mallard element translated incorrectly

2016-12-13 Thread Chris Perry
I did a bzr pull to get Gunnar's fix and did a test by temporarily
changing my local copy of mouse-mousekeys.page. Yes the fix seems to
work. If type isn't specified in the element, you get bullets in
the html. It looks like the "disc" bullets. So:

  First
  Second
  Third

gives you:

  First
  Second
  Third

I haven't noticed any (glaring) undesired side effects so far.

[Bug 1473070] [NEW] sa-update fails to run

2015-07-09 Thread Chris Perry
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS

Spamassassin 3.4.0-1ubuntu2.1

What should happen:
sa-update should run on the daily cron job without error

What does happen:
sa-update fails with error:
could not find working mirror, channel failed

The problem is related to perl's wonky threading. The fork call in sa-
update that utilizes curl/wget/fetch to retrieve data results in the
child process immediately dying from a SIGPIPE signal.

Adding the following at line 132 fixes the problem:

$SIG{PIPE} = 'IGNORE';

I can't vouch for whether that is the RIGHT thing to do, but it seems ok
in context and does allow sa-update to run.

I will attach before and after logs running sa-update as configured by
the package's daily cron task. (note that between the two runs I also
updated the gpg key).

[Bug 1354825] Re: release upgrades from an LTS with normal set should offer next LTS if next normal release is EoL

2014-08-16 Thread Chris Perry
I had the same problem, it was NOT related to the prompt value. The
only way that I managed to fix it was to uninstall and purge update-
manager-core (which will remove update-notifier-common) and then
reinstall it. After that upgrade proceeded normally. (I did manually
delete the /var/lib/update-manager and /var/lib/update-notifier
directories as the purge command refused to).

Hi Gary, thanks for your quick response. I have received the
notification email, and when I return to Software Centre I have the
option to install. However, when I try to do so I get the error:
"Install requires installation of untrusted package"

I have then followed the instructions here:

But this gets me a further error - gksudo: unrecognised option '--
