[Bug 1631315] Re: Determining touchpad capabilities
The text in mouse-touchpad-click.html referring to touchpads that support multi-finger taps should be removed in 17.04 (see Bug #1617718) so it will then be of less importance to determine touchpad capabilities. [Bug 1645689] Re: Install Additional Software doesn't include info on single signon
Yes you're right. Eg on 16.04 I don't have Hugo installed (Hugo is a snap) and in Ubuntu Software Hugo does have a "details" page but it doesn't give the source. Another point is that snaps and non snaps are both listed in Ubuntu Software and some packages are available in both formats. For example, Hexchat is listed three times in Ubuntu Software (16.04) (I have the snap installed but not the non snap). Two of the listings are installed (so for the snap?) and one is not installed (so for the non snap?). I also see that I'm not able to install the vlc snap (because it's not available for i386). I don't think snaps are mentioned in the 16.10 help. [Bug 1649554] Re: Default Mallard element translated incorrectly
On reflection I think it's best if writers say what kind of they want. Eg if they want bullets, it's best if they say so, rather than relying on defaults. [Bug 1649554] Re: Default Mallard element translated incorrectly
The fix does seem to have exposed some problems. [Bug 1649554] Re: Default Mallard element translated incorrectly
About 60 pages in the desktop help use elements. (I listed them using the command grep " seem straightforward. However, there's a handful of unusual/complicated uses, which I may well leave alone. (If in doubt, leave it alone.) So far I've noticed three short procedures that have been wrongly marked up using , so I'm planning to change those too. They'll be changed to elements. I'll just be changing markup (not the English text) so there is (surely) no impact on the translators. This is basically a simple job (though there are 60 pages to check). [Bug 1651233] [NEW] Inconsistent terminology for USB flash drive
Public bug reported: In the desktop help (development version - and very likely 16.10 too) the terminology for USB flash drive is inconsistent. For example: disk-format.html refers to "USB memory stick" files-share.html refers to "USB flash drive" backup-where.html refers to "USB memory key" backup-why.html refers to "USB drive" etc This is confusing for users. [Bug 1651360] [NEW] Formatting a removable disk
Public bug reported: The GUI for the Disks application must have been changed in the last few years so disk-format.html needs to be revised. The Disks application now seems to hide as many of the technical details as it can (which in theory I think is a good idea). I have a problem in that when I format a USB flash drive using Disks (Ubuntu 16.04) - no error is reported during formatting - but Ubuntu then doesn't recognise the drive. When I create a partition and format it using Gparted it works fine. Ive only tried this with one USB flash drive, so the problem may be specific to that drive (or not). @Gunnar. Yes I'll make a note to check what other pages need to be changed (presumably you mean other pages that describe how to use the Disks application?). I think it's straightforward to revise disk- format.html. On a related point: it seems to me that it will be quite common for users to want to "reuse" a removable disk - that's what I wanted to do which led me to discover that disk-format.html was out of date - (the steps would be something like this: format it, create a partition, and mount the partition). Yes that sounds OK. Can I change the title of the page to something like "Wipe the data off a removable disk and reuse it"? Is the hardware bug still common? Are the instructions still correct? If yes to both questions then I think the software workaround should be incorporated into the desktop help (we shouldn't be relying on a link into the middle of an old wiki page - eg I know what "natty and newer" means but people new to Ubuntu won't know). ** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1631718 Title: Middle-click emulation quirk To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+bug/1631718/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1599264] Re: [SRU] "When power is critically low" setting does nothing
Hi Gunnar, I take your point that I'm going beyond fixing this bug - but that (ideally) is what a good tech writer does. I think here's the answer to my question (link below). The default setting is "suspend" - yes I've checked 16.04 and that is correct. However, there's a bug so that when the setting is "suspend" Ubuntu shuts down when power is critically low. So can I fix this bug and also state that ubuntu by default shuts down when power is critically low? I believe that unless the user fiddles with the gnome settings, which aren't documented in the desktop help, there's no possibility of suspend, so can I remove the info about suspend on this page. [Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?
Hi Gunnar, I'm proposing to make minor changes to the following pages: addremove-install.html addremove-remove.html disk-partitions.html As regards installing and removing applications I'm proposing to say that there are two package formats: Debian packages and snap packages. In order to install or remove an application available as a snap package the user has to log on to Ubuntu One. Snap packages have advantages over Debian packages (I'm not planning to say what they are) so it's recommended that where there's a choice of format the user installs the snap package, which should be the first of the two applications listed. The change to disk-partitions.html will be three or four words only. I'm not planning to say what loop devices are. It's not relevant to that page. Hi Gunnar, thanks for your reply. Yes that's fine. [Bug 114521] Re: No help or documentation available for Ubuntu installer
@Gunnar. Can I do this bug? I was planning a short description of the main different ways of installing desktop Ubuntu - I think there are many different ways (eg the alternative downloads) so I wasn't planning to try to mention all of them - with links to detailed documentation (where such documentation exists). As an example link the recommended system requirements for the latest desktop LTS are here: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop I think the links will have to be to Canonical-maintained pages or up- to-date wiki pages. I wasn't planning to cover the details of installation at all (choose keyboard layout, enter username, etc, etc). I'll leave that stuff to the linked documents or the installer itself, which is now pretty good. Does the above sound OK? If not I suggest we discuss alternatives via email and then when we've decided what to do I can update this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114521 Title: No help or documentation available for Ubuntu installer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/114521/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Gunnar, below I give my (revised) idea of a "short description". It's basically links to www.ubuntu.com but www.ubuntu.com doesnt organise the info in this way (why not?). [ Start of page ] The process is typically this: Check the recommended system requirements: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop Download the ISO. Burn a DVD: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-ubuntu or create a bootable USB stick: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu Check your computer is compatible with Ubuntu: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/try-ubuntu-before-you-install Back up your data. Install Ubuntu: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-desktop [ End of page ] Strictly speaking info on installing Ubuntu doesn't belong in the desktop help but in my opinion it's an obvious place to look for it. As far as I can see there's no exact equivalent to the above text at www.ubuntu.com (why not?). If there was we could just link to it. [Bug 1659824] Re: screen-shot-record.html is inaccurate
Hi Gunnar, I'm running 16.04. My points simply relate to terminology. The window has the title "Screenshot" so surely it doesn't make sense for the page to say "In the Take Screenshot window ..."? I always try to use the terminology used by the GUI. Here the GUI uses "screen", which I think is OK. So surely it's not a good idea for the page to use "desktop" in step 2 - with no mention of "screen". [Bug 1658785] Re: Snap documentation in 17.04?
Hi Will, could you give the Docs Team some guidance about what to say about snaps in the the 17.04 desktop help? A user of the desktop help will typically install and remove packages using Ubuntu Software (not the command line). So as regards the desktop help I'm only concerned about how snaps affect the GUI. My main concern is to avoid confusing people who read the desktop help (which includes people who follow procedures in the desktop help). As I understand it the sources of possible confusion are: 1. Some packages are listed twice in Ubuntu Software (one is the snap and one is the deb package). In such a case how does the user know which to install? What do we say in the 17.04 desktop help? 2. When users try to install a snap via Ubuntu Software they get asked to log on to Ubuntu One. The 16.10 desktop help documents installing packages using Ubuntu Software but doesn't document log on to Ubuntu One. What do we say in the 17.04 desktop help? 3. The 16.10 desktop help mentions that the Disks application lists "hard disks, CD/DVD drives, and other physical devices", - I'm reading this as meaning everything listed is a physical device - which is not true any more since at present Disks lists snaps too. Hi Will, thanks for your reply. So you think it's fine to document points 1, 2, and 3 above in the 17.04 desktop help? The reason I'm asking is that once Ubuntu 17.04 is released the 17.04 desktop help is basically available, without corrections, to the world for the (short) life of Ubuntu 17.04. [Bug 1658785] [NEW] Snap documentation in 17.04?
Public bug reported: Do we say anything about snaps in the 17.04 desktop help and if so what do we say? If snaps are experimental and subject to change then perhaps we should say nothing? Below I give some points about snaps worth thinking about (as regards how we document them): The logon to Ubuntu One in Ubuntu Software when one tries to install a snap will surely create confusion. I saw one example on the #ubuntu channel where people were confused by it (with good reason in my opinion). At present you don't have to logon to Ubuntu One if you install a snap from the command line. Why are Ubuntu Software and the command line treated differently in this respect? I don't know much about snaps but in the manual for the snap command there are options to buy a snap and log on to the snap store. I would imagine that at present there are no snaps that one has to pay for - but there will be soon? Snaps are visible in the Disks application as "devices". This is very confusing in my opinion. ** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1658785 Title: Snap documentation in 17.04? Hi Gunnar, thanks for your reply. We don't need to decide what (if anything) to do until shortly before Documentation String Freeze (March 16th 2017). I suggest we stick to general principles (as regards maintaining the documentation). Eg if one of our procedures has changed we normally correct the page and if we see something that we think will cause a good deal of confusion for users we normally document it. Of course the meaning of "a good deal of confusion" is subjective. Thanks for the link to bug #1637984. It's not assigned to anyone, so presumably it won't be fixed any time soon? [Bug 1651233] Re: Inconsistent terminology for USB flash drive
@Gunnar. When the status is set to Opinion this bug drops off the list of ubuntu-docs bugs. I think the bug is worth keeping in mind. Can we set the status so that it stays on the list? Personally I'd set status = Triaged, importance = Low. If I update a page for other reasons I may as well make the correction. [Bug 1654238] [NEW] Switch to "English (United States)" doesn't work correctly
Public bug reported: I wanted to switch from "English (United Kingdom)" to "English (United States)". Ubuntu 16.04. In Language Support I moved "English (United States)" to the top of the list and then logged off and logged back in - but my language was still "English (United Kingdom)". Some notes on terminology: At some point "Wireless" must have been changed to "Wi-Fi" in the GUI but the desktop help wasn't changed. I briefly checked terminology outside Ubuntu. For example, Wikipedia uses "Wi-Fi" not "WiFi" or "wifi" or "wi-fi". [Bug 1637861] Re: Description of Ubuntu Software needs update
I had a quick look at this. Ubuntu Software seems to list a wide selection of packages (it uses the term "application" but some of the things it lists are not in my opinion applications). It doesn't restrict itself to particular repositories. For example, I see that some packages from Multiverse and Universe are listed. I see that it doesn't list fop (from Universe) or docbook (again from Universe). I think this point about missing packages is a general problem (it won't just confuse writers looking for fop or docbook). For example, mbrola (from Multiverse) - something to do with speech synthesis - sounds as if it might have a small group of enthusiasts - but Ubuntu Software doesn't list it (though confusingly it does list a frontend to mbrola). I'd say that a user might quickly outgrow Ubuntu Software and then he/she needs the full story from Synaptic. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1637861 Title: Description of Ubuntu Software needs update To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+bug/1637861/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've revised the page. Mouse keys seems to be partly documented in various places on the internet but I couldn't find a full description anywhere. My main source was the wikipedia mouse keys page (link below). I've copied this page in using the terminology "mouse keys" - though perhaps it should be "Mouse Keys". [Bug 1354825] Re: release upgrades from an LTS with normal set should offer next LTS if next normal release is EoL
I had the same problem, it was NOT related to the prompt value. The only way that I managed to fix it was to uninstall and purge update- manager-core (which will remove update-notifier-common) and then reinstall it. After that upgrade proceeded normally. (I did manually delete the /var/lib/update-manager and /var/lib/update-notifier directories as the purge command refused to). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1354825 Title: release upgrades from an LTS with normal set should offer next LTS if next normal release is EoL To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1354825/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 997402] Re: Buying software is impossible
I seem to have been experiencing this problem today, while trying to install Ryzom (free to purchase) from the Software Centre. Message read: Processing your request for "Ryzom"... Information received. I let this hang for about an hour, but the game does not seem to have installed. Using Ubuntu 12.04. [Bug 997402] Re: Buying software is impossible
Hi Gary, thanks for your quick response. I have received the notification email, and when I return to Software Centre I have the option to install. However, when I try to do so I get the error: "Install requires installation of untrusted package" I have then followed the instructions here: [url=https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Pay/FAQs/Missing_GPG_Key]https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Pay/FAQs/Missing_GPG_Key[/url] But this gets me a further error - gksudo: unrecognised option '-- keyserver' - followed by a list of command options. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/997402 Title: Buying software is impossible To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/997402/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
