[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-04-29 Thread Bernadette Addison
Having the same issue as most users here. Installed fresh copy of 18.04
to brand new hard drive, brand new dell XPS 15. Nvidia GTX 1050 on
boardInstalled drivers nvidia-390 from ppa. Now the machine will
only boot to black dos screen and I am not even able to get to the tty
because none of the combination key commands work. My only recourse is
to install from scratch again. Tried this with the normal installation
and with the minimal installation. Nvidia drivers simply do not work.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-04-30 Thread Bernadette Addison
@omar reddam - I also have the GTX 1050 in my new dell XPS-15 laptop.
After deleting xorg.conf as recommended here, I went a step further and
performed this command to blacklist nouveau:

$ sudo bash -c "echo blacklist nouveau >
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia-nouveau.conf"
$ sudo bash -c "echo options nouveau modeset=0 >>
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia-nouveau.conf"

Then I updated initramfs:
$ sudo update-initramfs -u

And lastly, I installed the nvidia software package via "sudo apt
install nvidia-390" before rebooting.

BLACK SCREEN.*sigh*

Has anyone tried to download the bin files directly from nvidia.com website?
What were the results?

I think I'll go ahead and try that. Will report back my findings.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-04-30 Thread Bernadette Addison
so, I downloaded various versions of the Linux drivers directly from
Nvidia.com website. Went thru the installation process - each time
starting over from scratch, formatting and reinstalling Ubuntu 18.04 so
I would have a "blank canvas" to work with. This process failed too.
My thinking was that perhaps the Nvidia drivers may/may not contain a
component that would not break the laptop. But this was a futile
effort.

Guess I will wait for a few more suggestions/ideas on how to get this
graphics card working once and for all.

[Bug 1773113] Re: nvidia-390 does not show GUI

2018-05-25 Thread Bernadette Addison
Same here. Installing nvidia-390 drivers on my Dell XPS 15 9560
results in an unbootable system. I have tried many, if not all, of the
fixes suggested in bug report #1752053, but none of them will allow me
to boot my system once the drivers are installed. I have even tried the
latest nvidia-396 with the same results. Either I get a boot-loop, or
else the login screen does not appear at all and I am only greeted with
a black screen w/blinking cursor. Someone reported that a fix was
released.can you please SHARE THE FIX??? Without proper diplay
drivers, I cannot even use the display ports or any of the HDMI ports on
this device. How frustrating that this display problem returns over and
over again with each and every Ubuntu release! SMH...

[Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2017-11-01 Thread Bernadette Addison
Greetings, this bug is also affecting my brand new fresh clean install
of Ubuntu 17.10 to my Dell XPS 15 laptop. I have gone thru this thread
and have tried every single trick/hack and nothing allows the machine to
boot successfully once the Nvidia drivers are installed. In fact, I am
facing consisten boot loops no matter which driver I install. I was
also unsuccessful in being able to log in wiht lightdm, even though the
machine did successfullly boot to the lightdm login screen after
Nvidia-375 was installed. I was wondering if I should try a different
kernel than the one that ships with 17.10?? I have as GeoForce GTX 1050
video card in the machine, so its not uncommon.

2017-11-01 Thread Bernadette Addison
K...so we’re getting closer! After a fresh install yet again, and following
very closely the steps outlined in post #66, I am now at the lighten login
screen. It will NOT let me login, it’s a constant login loop every time I put
in my password. But at least I’m past boot loop. I attempted to fix the login
loop by using a hack:
Carl+Alt+F1
mv.Xauthority .Xauthority.bak
Then back to the GUI. Unfortunately this did not work. So I am currently just
sitting at the login screen, unable then loginlol

This is a bit comical that we need to jump thru these hoops for drivers
to work :-(

[Bug 299274] Re: Network Manager detects but cannot connect with Dell 5530

2013-02-03 Thread Bernadette Addison
Greetings, I am having the same exact problem as every user above my
post. Network Manager sees "New GSM conncetion", and it walks me thru

never ever connects successfully. I have tried this on Ubuntu 12.04,
and now I am even trying it on Ubuntu 13.04. This just does NOT work.
I have the Dell 5530 Mobile Broadband card. I have gone thru all the
steps for troubleshooting the network card. I am at a loss as to what
the next steps are. I have created a *.doc file which contains all the
outputs for the different test commands I have run. I will attach it
here. Assistance is badly needed here. I am considering rolling out
Ubuntu to all of the project managers at my companyroughly 40
laptops. But they ALL have this internal mobile broadband card.
Without a fix, I will have to settle on Windows8, and not too happy with
that as a solution either.

[Bug 1114575] Re: Network Manager cannot connect using embedded Dell 5530 Mobile Broadband device

2013-02-05 Thread Bernadette Addison
Did that. Got the same results in the modem.log.txt previously posted.
Now that the network-manager has stopped, even after restartin mm in
debug mode, there is no way for me to launch network connections to try
to connect to the mobile broadband modem. When I go to apps,
network...none of the connections are there anymore. Only a reboot
brings everything back. It looks like once I disabel everything in
order to get into debug mode, there's no way to start any
connections. Am I still missing a step or a command??

When I try to close TERMINAL, it tells me "There is still a process
running in this terminal. Closing the terminal will kill it". But with
my naked eyes, I don't see terminal doing anthing at all even after
letting it sit for over 20minutes?

@Aleksander - this is EXACLY what I am followingin the order it is
written.

@Marius - you are correct. I no longer have an NM applet available to

about restarting the applet.

Thanks to you both for your patience with me. Will be right back..

2013-02-05 Thread Bernadette Addison
Okgetting CLOSER and CLOSER!! Did a bit more digging, searching,
reading, testing!!

I am able to manually configure wvdial.conf with some settings to initialize
the Dell 5530 Mobile Broadband card.
I "think" I am even able to get it to talk to the AT&T Wireless network.

But that's where all the joy stops. aaar.

I keep getting this output when I manually connect:

[Bug 1114575] Re: Network Manager cannot connect using embedded Dell 5530 Mobile Broadband device

2013-02-06 Thread Bernadette Addison
@Marius - I was able to remove the SIM card from out of the back of the
Dell laptop, and put the card in another AT&T USB wifi device. Then I
installed it to my Windows7 machine using AT&T Connection Mananger v7.2
The card worked fine! I was on the AT&T network in no time at all. I
was even able to use the GPS (Location) functions with the card.

Currently I am running UBUNTU 12.04-LTS, and using whatever modemmanager
comes with the original CD *.iso I had to format the harddrive and
downgrade from 13.04 because I want depserately to roll this out to
about +/-40 project managers' laptops. So I need to get this working on
the "stable" version of Ubuntu.

@Aleksander - I noticed that, too. However ...If you look at my post
#19, you'll see that I actually DID make a successful connection to AT&T
using the modified wvdial.conf script. Is there any way to make the
modemmanager confing script use those AT commands that the wvdial.conf
script is using? Maybe it can get me a successful registration state if
it were sending the proper commands.

Just thinking out loud here :-/

Oh - and Marius, I will go now and attempt to install the latest version
of mm via PPA? Don't know what that means yet, or even how to do the
install, but I am eternally grateful for all the learning , and
knowledge I'm getting here!!

[Bug 1163886] Re: software-center crashed with signal 5 with the GNOME3 PPA on 13.04

2013-06-05 Thread Bernadette Addison
Greetings! Just started getting this error. SAME EXACT OUTPUT as listed
in Post #17 above this one. Running Ubuntu 13.04 with latest Gnome PPA
. Software Center simply will not start. Even if I run it with
elevated sudo permissions, as suggested in Post #5, it still crashes,
and will not run.
