[Bug 212799] Re: [hardy] Xv causes SIGSEGV in memcpy()
I had the opportunity to test an Intel G965. I was not able to crash the system (xserver). The reason is that it is based on PCI Express. Difference between the two systems that I have tested. Dell Laptop Inspiron6400L: product: Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub configuration: driver=agpgart-intel module=intel_agp Desktop PC: product: 82P965/G965 PCI Express Root Port configuration: driver=pcieport-driver If you take a look at the upstream commit (see bug description) you also can see this headline "Always bind memory after agp aperture allocation" In conclusion, we can see that all newer systems that have PCI Express shouldn't be affected by this bug. I have installed my patched package on the G965 System to see if it would have some negative affects. As expected I hadn't any problems. I know everybody is busy with Intrepid but I think such a dangerous bug should really be fixed for all the users that have an system with Intel agp. Can we change the Importance to HIGH please and eliminate this problem. [Bug 221038] Re: PulseAudio fails when Gstreamer is paused
@Alex, Flash doesn't appear in pavucontrol because it doesn't use pulseaudio. I couldn't reproduce your problem. I paused an video in Totem for 10 min and nothing happened. I was able to start the playback without any problems. Could it be that the problem is caused by the flash player? @Benjamin Drung, As it seems, xmms2 doesn't support pulseaudio in hardy. I have seen a package in intrepid that should deliver support for pulseaudio. (xmms2-plugin-pulse) In conclusion, I would say that these problems are related to software that isn't able to use pulseaudio at the moment. [Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.11 in Intrepid
I know that there are problems with Intel HDA and the new Pulseaudio 0.9.11 or better said Alsa 1.0.17, but hey, there is some time left before Intrepid will be released. As far as I know there are some fixes under away for this problems. Just one thought, as I understand it, if ubuntu could ship Pulseaudio 0.9.11 we could have some nice event sounds. Take a look at this blog and bug report. What I read tells me that the support for this will be possible for the next ubuntu release. http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/sixfold-announcement.html http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=542979 A short part of the release note of pulseaudio 0.9.11 * "Spatial" event sounds, i.e. sound events from UI elements are positioned in space, according to where they were triggered on the screen (click on a button on the left side of the screen and audio comes from the left speaksers, ...) To make use of these features clients need to use the libcanberra event sound library. So as it seems right now the next gnome release will support libcanberra. As I understand it, nothing else is needed. If I am wrong then please enlighten me. If you think it is to early for Glitch Free Audio then I will patiently wait ;-) btw. the wiki has been updated and Fedora10 is investigation in pulseaudio 0.9.11. Release will be in October like ubuntu's. http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/DownloadPulseAudio#Requirements http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/GlitchFreeAudio (Maybe ubuntu could cooperate with them to eliminate major problems.) Ubuntu uses the OSS driver which is in the kernel. You could try a liveCD/USB for testing purpose and see if the problem disappears. You could also update your BIOS and see if that helps. I cannot remember that my system froze because of the network chip. Maybe some other hardware in your system is producing this problem. Will alsa be updated to version 1.0.18 if you plan to ship PA 0.9.13+ as update? Maybe an alsa update would fix some other bugs in relation to PA too. [Bug 212799] Re: [hardy] Compositing + Xv causes SIGSEGV in memcpy() [i945]
I don't know if it helps but I have created an debdiff against the latest (proposed) version of the xserver-xorg-video- intel_2.2.1-1ubuntu13.5 package. This is my first debdiff. I hope I have done everything right. I had no problems so far with my patched package. But I can only test one system. My System: Dell Laptop (Inspiron6400L) hardy 8.04.1 32-bit kernel 2.6.24-19-generic *-pci description: Host bridge product: Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 100 bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:00:00.0 version: 03 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz configuration: driver=agpgart-intel module=intel_agp I don't want to be the one who breaks the system of others because of this patch ;-) It would be nice if you could verify my debdiff and tell my if I did something wrong. [Bug 212799] Re: [hardy] Xv causes SIGSEGV in memcpy()
** Summary changed: - [hardy] Compositing + Xv causes SIGSEGV in memcpy() + [hardy] Xv causes SIGSEGV in memcpy() ** Description changed: - Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel + Changed the Description for the ubuntu stable release team. - Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch) - Release:8.04 - Arch: amd64 - Graphics card: i945 - xserver-xorg-video-intel: - Installed: 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu9~local1 - (a local build of ubuntu9 version, but the same problem appeared in earlier versions as well) - - I'm running a KDE environment with the KDE3 compositing manager to get some nice transparent terminals. - Sometimes when I try to play a video with Xv the server crashes in the driver. - The crash causes the text-mode ttys to become unusable but a new X server is started by KDM. + 1. This bug is very critical, It causes the xserver to crash if you use XV (X video extension). In the worst case you lose data. Every open Application gets interrupted. + 2. This bug has been fixed thought a new driver version in Intrepid. To fix this problem in hardy I have applied an commit from upstream that fixes this problem ( http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel.git;a=commitdiff;h=1c0e4958564588162bc22a980567436dfc9d1e56 ). I have attached a debdiff that I have created against the latest proposed xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.2.1-1ubuntu13.5 package. So far I could not find any bugs/problems that may have been introduced through this patch. + 3. You can reproduce this problem by playing some videos with totem (XV as backend). If you play a HD-Trailer the xserver crashes much earlier. If composite (compiz) is activated doesn't show any difference. + 4. As I mentioned earlier I could not find any new bugs. Two other people have tested the debdiff with success. I don't know if the Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 is also affected. I know that the chips from 915 to 945 are affected. ** Tags removed: needs-bisection -- [hardy] Xv causes SIGSEGV in memcpy() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212799 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Wouldn't it be easier to publish the new Intel 2.3.2 driver? Maybe someone can build a package without EXA acceleration as it is still slow nowadays, so that we can test it. [Bug 212799] Re: [hardy] Compositing + Xv causes SIGSEGV in memcpy() [i945]
I have applied an "patch" from upstream and as far as I can tell I have no problems. The patch is the commit that Hele mentioned earlier. (See some comments above) I applied the patch to this package version xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.2.1-1ubuntu12) hardy What I have tested: - played several videos - glxgears - scrolling in Firefox was fast (only to be sure nothing else broke) - compiz (apps were running at the same time) I hope this helps to release a fixed package version. I would like to know if this patch will make it into Intrepid? I have tested this patch in hardy, because I have no Intrepid system right now. [Bug 205717] Re: [Hardy] S/Pdif / digital output not available in pulseaudio
You can follow this discussion to see were the problems are. https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio- discuss/2008-May/001863.html If you use SPDIF for AC3 decoding then you don't need pulseaudio. For example you can configure VLC to use ALSA and SPDIF. That is no problem. If you use pulseaudio you only get a 2 channel signal if you put a stream on the digital output. The Multichannel support in pulseaudio is working great for me. Totem and Gstreamer are doing the rest. I have followed the instructions above to see my digital output in pulseaudio but I don't really need it. So there should be no problems, that couldn't be solved. regards Achim -- [Hardy] S/Pdif / digital output not available in pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205717 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 140926] Re: realtek hd audio alc888
When I started my LINUX-experience in May 2008 using FEDORA-Linux- Distribution from REDHAT there were no sound problems at all! Obviously FEDORA "understands" the Realtek ALC888 soundchip perfectly. For other reasons I switched to UBUNTU-Linux-Distribution in novembre 2008 and got stuck in terrible no-sound-problems just from the beginning. UBUNTU did not recognize the Realtek ALC888 soundchip at all. It took a lot of time until I finally managed to get the sound working. I downloaded the Realtek audiopack 5.03, the latest alsa-driver 1.0.18a and made use of alsaconf 1.0.18_2 i386 deb and finally UBUNTU recognized the soundchip and the GNOME alsa-mixer started working. My happiness about this final victory was suddenly broken, when I made use of the regular UBUNTU-system updates! Along with the latest system update a few days ago came a new kernel version that made all my efforts disappear: after restarting UBUNTU the soundchip was not longer recognized - no sound - all settings were tilt. Since then my system also refuses to perform smaller (no kernel changes) updates at all. I know about sw-developpers difficulties to get open accesss to all the different soundchip architectures. But obviously FEDORA seems to have fixed this problem perfectly!!! Wouldn't it bepossible to make use of FEDORAS knowledge about this sound-problem and improve UBUNTU in this respect? -- realtek hd audio alc888 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140926 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have no idea what was wrong, but everything seems to work like it should. -- printer prints page at wrong position, page cut https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/293832 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 265010] [NEW] pulseaudio 0.9.11 ppa Luke real-time/high-priority scheduling not working
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio Real-time/high-priority scheduling is not working, I thought this is what we want to test with the new pulseaudio 0.9.11. $ pulseaudio --start -vvv D: main.c: Started as real root: no, suid root: yes I: main.c: Called SUID root and real-time/high-priority scheduling was requested in the configuration. However, we lack the necessary priviliges: I: main.c: We are not in group 'pulse-rt' and PolicyKit refuse to grant us priviliges. Dropping SUID again. I: main.c: Note that real-time/high-priority scheduling is NOT normally required. If you experience crackling or other sound anomalies, consider one or more of the above solutions. I: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted I: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted W: main.c: High-priority scheduling enabled in configuration but not allowed by policy. [Bug 265010] Re: pulseaudio 0.9.11 ppa Luke real-time/high-priority scheduling not working
Okay, I have done what you have suggested and it looks better now. $ pulseaudio --start -vvv D: main.c: Started as real root: no, suid root: yes I: main.c: We're in the group 'pulse-rt', allowing high-priority scheduling. [Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.11 in Intrepid
I think I have all packages updated. How do you share your sound card Tom Jaeger? I use paprefs most of the time. I have tested this with two computer both with intrepid and pulseaudio 0.9.11. If one computer hast pulseaudio 0.9.10 I can stream the sound from PA 0.9.11 to PA 0.9.10 but not the other way around. I couldn't get it working with pulseaudio 0.9.11. [Bug 252335] Re: [Packaging Request] Upgrade to PulseAudio 0.9.11 in Intrepid
I have added may user also to the various pulse groups like you suggested but it didn't show any affect. If I try to use multicast pulseaudio crashes very fast on the Receiver side and I never heard a sound. So at the moment it is not very stable and "full" of regressions for me. I have updated pulseaudio from your ppa Luke. pavumeter is working again, but the Networking stuff doesn't work. I use paprefs to share my sound card but it doesn't work. What works for a short time is Multicast/RTP. Pulseaudio crashes on the receiver side after ca. 5 sec. Does the network stuff work for you Luke? [Bug 413567] [NEW] ubuntu doesn't use the PA backend of libcanberra
Public bug reported: Karmic Alpha4 still uses the Alsa backend for playing event sounds with libcanberra. The problem is that we (the people that use ubuntu) get less features than other distro people. For example: http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/oh-nine-sixteen.html "Surround Sound Support for Event Sounds" https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio-discuss/2009-August/004720.html "Hmm, Ubuntu didn't use the pa backend for libcanberra? Oh my!" So it seems to be a really good idea to switch to the pa backend. ** Affects: libcanberra (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ubuntu doesn't use the PA backend of libcanberra https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/413567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 414340] [NEW] event sounds are played only through the left speaker
Public bug reported: Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch) Release:9.10 libcanberra-pulse: Installiert: 0.15-0ubuntu2 Kandidat: 0.15-0ubuntu2 Versions-Tabelle: *** 0.15-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Now that Karmic uses the PA backend of libcanberra I have noticed that the event sounds play only through the left speaker. It should play the sound dependent of the button position on the screen. If the position of the button is more left on the screen it should play the event sound through the left speaker and if the button is more on the right side of the screen it should play the event sound through the right speaker. To make this easy visible to the eyes, take a look at pavucontrol, there you can see to which speaker the sounds are played. I have seen someone else noticed such a behavior. https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio-discuss/2009-August/004636.html (See 1st paragraph) ** Affects: libcanberra (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- event sounds are played only through the left speaker https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/414340 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
