[Bug 60709] wallet appears to have focus but does not

2006-09-16 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kwalletmanager

The application 'Kopete' requested access to the kwallet, and a dialogue
appeared requesting password. As passwords tend to be, it is natural for
me to type so I typed it in and pressed enter without paying much
attention. At this point, there was a flashing caret in the password
box.

It transpired that the password box had not got focus, even though it
appeared to have: in fact, it was Konversation, which was previously
focused, that still had it, causing me to send my password through IRC.
This could be quite a security risk, since Konversation could have been
anything and my password could have been somewhat more important than
that.

[Bug 116333] JAVA mouse pointer lags, slower than XP Pro

2007-05-22 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

I have a computer which I physically replace hard drives. One is for XP
Pro and one for Ubuntu. I bring up the same site on both systems. The
site has JAVA charting apps. When moving the mouse pinter over the JAVA
app under Ubuntu 7.04 (fully updated), the mouse pointer lags. Processor
use is very high. XP Pro is much faster with the same exact site and
JAVA app.

This occurred before I had the login screen problem. I noticed this soon
after I installed Ubuntu.

Re: [Bug 116329] Re: Login screen missing when login reconfigured

2007-05-23 Thread Al
Martin,

Thanks for writing back, it's very much appreciated.

The URL is
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/6130

Many Login Window Preferences were changed. I'm not
sure exactly what parameters were set but I cahnged
the Image Logo to ghome-suse.png, I also set the
welcome message and the style was "plain with face
browser". I allowed users to change fonts and colors
and allowed the background image to be shown to remote
users.
One thing is for sure, the problem occured after the
Login Windows Preferences were altered.

I respectfully differ on the security issue. If anyone
can come in to my office, turn on my PC and start
using my computer without a password, that's a
security issue. I have a few decades of computer
networking under my belt. It may not be a
vulnerability per say, however, this instability
results in network and application access.

I'm all for the project. Let me know what eles I can
do to help, however, I've given you all I know about
this issue. UNIX is something I haven't touched in 5
years.

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2008-02-17 Thread AL
This is my second posting. After adding and removing Gstremer and Xine packages
I finally managed to get audio from Totem using Gstreamer but still no video. I
been at it for days still no success. Is there a Linux Codec(plug-in) for
purchase ? The video that came with the O.S. plays fine, but using DVD player
and movie DVD is the problem.
My computer is a 7 years old desktop, self assembled with ATI rage 128 meg
memory, and 384 meg system memory .FIC motherbord with Awards bios(bios date is
2000). If Cononical wants this O.S. to enter corporate and consumer market they
must quickly solve this kind of problems in order to be taken seriously. As of
today this O.S. is not ready for any kind of market and this is very strange
after many years of development. Why they released Totem when they know it
doesn't work? strange! I tought I discovered something fantastic. Mr.Sutterland
needs new technical and corporate strategies if he wants to compete with
Microsoft.

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2008-02-17 Thread AL
MY third posting. If you are wondering , yes I read the entire Ubuntu website
and all the information that they had to offere, I even did google search on
Totem problem. Still no solution . I wonder why they recommend using terminal
commands as oppose to using synaptic package manager or using Add/Remove
option. As Ubuntu recommended I typed this at the termina but I got error
message:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/install-css.sh

Messages says: Command not found.

so I added this using synaptic manager.

After doing this I added extra Codecs for Gstreamer from Universe and
multiverse reposotory.
still no luck , Now I'm only getting sound from Totem, but no video.
I hope all of you can share your experiences in step by step manner if you
managed to solve the problem. Thanks

click on a buttons that says set to default. At this point the video

[Bug 175909] Re: Administrator button fails to work in kde-settings and kcontrol

2008-02-11 Thread al
This issue dissapeared for me also in my Kubuntu Gutsy amd64
installation. However, I had to format my amd64 partitions and install
the 32 bit version of Kubuntu Gutsy for testing purposes. Once the CD
install completed I ran `apt-get update && apt-get upgrade` and the
administrator button problem is there.

2008-01-22 Thread al
Installed Kubuntu Gutsy amd64 from the live cd 2008-01-15 using safe mode.
Selected English during the install.
Ran apt-get update && apt-get upgrade.
Installed NVIDIA restricted drivers from nvidia.com.
Installed mad-wifi from source.
Installed ndiswrapper
Installed atheros wireless windows drivers using ndiswrapper.

Select K -> System Settings -> Network Settings -> Administrator Mode
I am prompted for my password, I see a progress message "reading network
configuration"
then it returns to the greyed disabled listing of available network devices.

Wow, I put this in months ago, but thanks for your
question.

Sorry, I haven't been with Ubuntu for a while because
of this problem. I use a java charting system found in
prophet.net, the pointer jumps around, very
frustrating.

I found Ubuntu 7 to be underperforming XP so I plugged
in my XP HD again. I just upgraded to the newer Ubuntu
so I will try it again when I can.

Thanks

[Bug 24280] I guess It's not a gksu issue, gtk probably

2007-06-21 Thread Al
I agree this issue is really annoying. But I've noticed that if I run an
application from xterm using "sudo application" command line, I get that
unthemed gtk controls. So it's not a gksu problem. It's a common issue
related to using user themes by gtk.

I think that gtk should take into consideration not only user id that
it's running under, but also a common context like who really owns the
session and his themes/paths to themes.

[Bug 24280] Re: locally installed gtk themes not applied to admin apps

2007-06-21 Thread Al
Tom, yes, it's going from gconf.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ find . -exec grep -l CleanBlue {} \;
./.gconf/desktop/gnome/interface/%gconf.xml
./.themes/CleanBlue/index.theme
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Sebastian probably meant that it's root's gconf.
So then gtk should learn x session owner (I guess the X server can give such
information?) and
read his gconf setting with the theme name and path.

Video card is an nVidia GeForce4 440 Go, using the 96.43.17 driver.
I also tried the 96.43.16 driver with the same results.

One strange thing that I found was that using gdm for a display manager, the
problem goes away.
With gdm, I can log out, and still have a working system with terminals, and it
will log back in OK.
Using either kdm or xdm, I have nothing but black screens after logging out.

When I ssh into the computer (after logging out of KDE), top shows 99% cpu for
Xorg.
If I kill the process, then the login screen returns, and I can log back in to
KDE.

Here's the result of tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log as I am logging out of
KDE:

[Bug 526285] Re: balsa 3.2.28 (karmic) will not send mail ver 3.2.25 (intrepid) worked

2010-02-27 Thread al
I hope this helps in troubleshooting this problem since I still don't have use
of email on this system.
Upon "sending" email (compose/send), the client never connects to smtp server,
instead, the message is dumped into the Outbox.
Looking at the mail headers in all the messages in outbox, there is not one
with a "To:" field
the fields Date:, From:, Reply-To:, Subject:, X-Mailer:, etc. are present but
no To: field.
I just did another test and the CC: field is missing also.
Is there is a config change between 2.3.25 and 2.3.28? All operation seems
normal except client won't add the To: and Cc: fields so the email fails.
Thank you for looking into this,
Allan

[Bug 474767] Re: Balsa doesn't send emails after Karmic upgrade

2010-02-27 Thread al
I'm having the same problem. I opened a bug report (526285) before seeing this
one.
The To: filed does not exist in the header and all "sent" emails are dropped
into the Outbox and marked with a red "!"

[Bug 526285] [NEW] balsa 3.2.28 (karmic) will not send mail ver 3.2.25 (intrepid) worked

2010-02-23 Thread al
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I have been using Balsa for many years. Installed ubuntu 8x about a year ago on
laptop - worked great! I was mildly surprised and pleased. Upgraded to Karmic
and balsa will not send email. All "compositions" got directly to "outbox" with
red exclamation point and none of the emails have a "To" field in the header.
All emais in "sentbox" (prior to upgrade to karmic) show a To field with a
valid address. As near as I can tell, ubuntu 8x had balsa 2.3.25 installed
while current (broken) version is 2.3.28. I have not been able to find a bug
report for this problem in balsa so I am assuming it is your build. Please
respond as soon as possible since i have been depending on this laptop - I did
not anticipate broken software since everyting else worked really well.
Thank in advance

2010-06-05 Thread Al
Hi Pedro,
I included them in Evolution with Drag&Drop and then evolution changed
them to inline text ... grrrhhh.

OK, now second try. I saved those mails separately and extended the file
with .txt, so hopefully evolution doesn't mess it up this time...

Thanks for the patience,

Albrecht

[Bug 585195] [NEW] Evolution hangs reading pane after showing HTML message

2010-05-24 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

-I am using POP3 accounts on Evolution to read my email and this error
happens on reading their local messages. Besides that I also have IMAP
setup, but am not usually using it. So this should not be related to the
IMAP 'message formatting' bug.

Expected behaviour:
-HTML messages can be read like text messages in Evolution and reading pane
does not hang after displaying HTML

Problem behaviour:
-Reading text only messages works without any issues, however on HTML messages
it will render and display the message, but after this the reading pane
freezes.
-Freezing means: if I click on 'next message', 'prior message', 'delete' etc.
the old HTML message remains in the reading pane, while the header of the
reading window will change to the title of the next/prior email etc. Evolution
itself will keep responding.
-My current workaround is, to doubleclick on a next email, by this opening a
new reading pane. For this pane now the same behaviour continues. I.e. as long
as it shows text only messages there will be no issues, but it will hang the
display after the first HTML message.
-For each hung reading pane one status message is shown in the evolution status
bar "Nachricht wird formatiert" = 'formatting message'.
-When trying to close Evolution:
-->it will not shut down if I have at least one of the "Nachricht wird
formatiert" messages in the status bar and I need to kill it
-->If I was lucky and read only text messages (and no "Nachricht wird
formatiert" messages are still hanging) it will shut down peacefully.

[Bug 545658] [NEW] System fails to boot / Unclear mountall prompt.

2010-03-23 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

Following the reformatting of a non-system partition, Ubuntu appeared to be
unable to boot.
Ubuntu boot screen hangs on:
Waiting for /media/shared [SM]

I pressed a key and was met with this message:
mountall:mountall.c:2726: Not reached assertion failed in boredom_timeout

Knowing that this UUID no longer existed I commented out the entry in
fstab, rebooted and all was well.

There are two issues here:
1) A missing trivial partition *appears* to cause complete failure of the
system, at least to a non-technical user.
2) The mountall prompt is not user friendly. [SM] is actually a prompt to press
S = skip? / M = maintenance? This could be a lot clearer, and appears to be
undocumented (Not mentioned in man page). I only found this out afterwards when
searching on this error, I had previously pressed another key which dropped me
to maintenance shell.

Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04
mountall:

Thanks!

I have no idea - I went through the automated bug reporting procedure.
Is there some way to make a bug private or public? I'm happy to
change whatever needs to be changed.

[Bug 530482] Re: network-manager-kde "System Connection" checkbox disabled

2010-03-20 Thread Al
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 344852 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344852

I confirm that. In my case it always have been disabled both in 9.10 and
10.04. So I had to create /etc/network/interfaces manually. Moreover I
have to put "nameserver" string into /etc/resolv.conf every time after
reboot.

[Bug 398214] Re: Karmic Koala stopps dead after /scripts/init-bottom

2009-08-23 Thread Al
I confirm this issue. I did upgrading from kubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 alpha and at
some point when setting up downloaded packaged the system just freezed reacting
only to the power button pressed for 6 sec.
Consequent reboots (doesn't matter if the recovery kernel was used or not)
freezed the same way after the line:

Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ...
Done.

I also blamed a line like "Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -127665427 ns)"
right after the lines above but adding "notsc" parameter to the kernel
eliminated the warning and kept freezes.
The fix in the message #3 rabbitear helped (though I didn't touch fstab).

[Bug 449058] [NEW] gnome alsamixer not loaded resulting in no sound

2009-10-11 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-alsamixer

I down loaded Ubuntu 9.10 Beta because I couldn't get sound to work
under 9.04. I'm using a gateway 7326 laptop. After the installation
was complete I still had NO SOUND. I searched the internet to no avail.
I decided to look through Synaptic and see if maybe I needed another
package. I noticed that gnome alsa mixer was not loaded. I remember
that in all the reports in 9.04 the Gnome ALSA Mixer was always asked to
be loaded so I did. Still NO SOUND. I was just about ready to throw
this thing out when I recalled someone mentioning something about an
EXTERNAL AMPLIFIER. I opened up the Gnome ALSA Mixer and to my surprise
the external amplifier was checked. I had the Rythmbox player running
when I unchecked it. Hopefully my hearing will recover LOL. I now have
sound.

I would have expected this to be set to use the systems internal
amplifier or at best some prompt given the first time you attempt to use
sound so one is aware that there is an external amplifier setting and
how to change it.

It was so rewarding to know I didn't have to load all that other software I saw
listed in the forums. That was scary!
... Alalse...@yahoo.com

I HAVE SOUND!

[Bug 500168] [NEW] please backport to ubuntu 9.04

2009-12-24 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: padre

Padre is playing hard-to-get by the cpan shell. I'd like to be able to
install it from apt without upgrading my distro, since there are many
known issues with 9.10 that might/will affect me. I'm not sure how
likely it is that padre is actually installable by cpan on even a clean
installation of 9.04, let alone one as dirty as the one I'm installing
on, due to various config/dependency issues. A backport would be the
best option.

[Bug 1634572] Re: APCUPSD does not send killpower command to UPS (only happens on Ubuntu 16.04)

2017-02-03 Thread Al
I have been fighting this problem for quite a while. It is gratifying
that others also have the same problem. I have tried using several
linux releases, including Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, and Mint. All have
the same problem, ie, the UPS will not power down after the system is
shut down. My experience is that killpower is not shutting down the
UPS.

I have had the problem with an APC back-ups 350 with a USB cable, an APC
smartups 1400 with a serial interface to a USB port, and an APC smartups
620 with the same serial inteface to a usb port. Apcuspd v3.14.14.0,
V3.14.12.0, and all of these with Fedora 25, Mint Mate 18.0, The latest
release of Raspbian on a Raspberry PI, and Ubuntu mate on a Raspberry
PI. The system shuts down as expected, but I cannot get the UPS to
shutdown after the system shutdown. HELP!!!

[Bug 1627144] [NEW] Received texts merging

2016-09-23 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, long multi-part texts have their ends truncated and replaced
with the end of random texts received months earlier. I can't reproduce
it, however if I ask the sender to re-send the long text, it is
displayed correctly. The texts are displayed incorrectly in both the
Messages app and scope.

OTA-12 saw the issue almost eradicated, but OTA-13 has seen it return.

[Bug 1590565] [NEW] Unable to turn off wi-fi or change network

2016-06-08 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Since updating to OTA 11 on the M10, the network indicator occasionally goes
awry and both
1) won't allow me to turn off the wi-fi, through use of either the flight mode
or wi-fi switches, and..
2) won't allow a change of network away from what the tablet is currently
connected to.

Please see the attached screenshot to see an example of the first
problem.

I can't offer steps to reproduce, as it seems to happen at a seemingly
random interval after restart. Indeed, the only way to get the
indicator working as intended is to do a restart.

Apologies if this has already been reported, but I can't find any other
bugs filed which match what I'm experiencing.

[Bug 1460265] Re: Suspend to RAM fails: (0 tasks refusing to freeze, wq_busy=1)

2015-06-02 Thread al
Since this is a production machine I didn't test the RC builds and I began
testing with "v4.0.4-wily" and fortunately the bug was apparently fixed in this
release, now my question is,
1- Can I continue using this kernel on this production machine, reliably and
safely?
2- If I was to use the proprietary AMD/Radeon drivers, should I use the drivers
built for vivid or wily?

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1435823] Re: Disappearing /var/run/mysqld causes mysqld to fail after reboot

2015-09-11 Thread al
Hi,

I am not an expert,so I do'nt know how to apply the Bruno's fix

When I start mysql I get:

Sep 11 11:08:52 serv mysql[25802]: Checking for tables which need an up...e
Sep 11 11:08:52 serv mysql[25802]: not closed cleanly..
Hint: Some lines were ellipsized, use -l to show in full.

I understand I have to

Create a newfile /etc/tmpfiles.d/mysql.conf:

What does it mean " d /var/run/mysqld 0755 mysql mysql - " ? Delete?

Thank You to all mysql experts that can solve this question.

Yours Sincerely,
Alex

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1309934 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1309934

This bug has prevented me from installing wine on my DellD830.

It seems that I am being prevented from installing " wine" because a
printer font can't be loaded because it's already there.

This doesn't make any sense to me .

I have been programming computers since before the Russians launched the
first sputnik.

I have very little experience with linux or even GNU, But I'm willing
to help.

[Bug 1357090] Re: Black screen on resume in Xubuntu 14.04.1

2015-01-02 Thread Al
I am also experiencing this bug with Ubuntu 14.04.1 AMD64 on an HP Stream 14
Chromebook. Surprise was that I was previously running 14.04 on this laptop
via crouton and it worked a dream, so I did not expect any issues at all in
upgrading to the LTS version.

However, the upgrade has been a very painful experience compared to the 14.04
distro. My touchpad stopped working, which I was able to resolve by upgrading
the kernel to 3.17. But, I am still unable to get past this issue with suspend.

I have disabled suspend/hibernate for now, but this means i have to keep
my laptop constantly plugged in when I am not using it or it will run
out of battery. As you can imagine, this is annoying for any laptop
user and even more annoying when this feature worked fine on the non LTS
release. Please let me know if i can provide more information for
debugging.

[Bug 1391710] [NEW] Xorg assert failure: *** Error in `/usr/bin/X': malloc(): smallbin double linked list corrupted: 0xb83bc370 ***

2014-11-11 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Utopic, xorg randomly crashes with machine unattended.
After the xorg crash, I am unable to access any terminals, the only way to

No particular pattern to this, I have tried various screensavers including

[Bug 439289] Re: Lubuntu-desktop has unnecessary requirements

2012-10-24 Thread Al
On LUbuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal package "lubuntu-desktop" have as
dependency 'NetworkManager' (NM). NM is uninstalled and purget out from
the system, and successfully replaced with Wicd network connections
manager.

Removing of unneeded NM (it is indeed fully replaced by Wicd) leads to
 - blocking of normal installation of other software,
 - when the rest of the system is fine and fully functional.

As NM is a dependency, after removing of NM package managment, on any
apt-get install or apt-get upgrade attempt system reports, for example:

$ sudo apt-get install python-pyudev python3-pyudev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
lubuntu-desktop : Depends: network-manager-gnome but it is not going to be
installed
Depends: update-notifier but it is not going to be installed
update-manager : Depends: update-notifier but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a
solution).

And nothing new will be installed.

P.S. 'update-notifier' was removed after NM removal, as this notifier
will show in system tray permanent, annoing red 'flag', indicating that
I have in repositories a sowtware that is unneeded to me.

[Bug 1017798] [NEW] Virtualbox error after update kernel to 3.0.0-21-generic

2012-06-25 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

After updating from kernel 3.0.0-20-generic to 3.0.0-21-generic,
Virutalbox was unable to start the installed Win XP virtual machine,
reporting a problem with missing kernel drivers ("Kernel driver not
installed (rc=-1908)"). After downgrading to kernel version 20 it works
fine. Check all the steps I went through here
(https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/201004), as other issues
were involved too. I'm reporting this as a bug after the advice given by
another user in the Ubuntu Questions thread linked above.

[Bug 612156] [NEW] Can't install 10.4 on a Gateway 7326

2010-07-31 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

I can install 9.04 on the Gateway 7326 without a problem. I am using it to
type this question.
If I use the 10.04 CD ( I used that version to install 10.04 on a Toshiba) It
will go though the installation and then on bootup will get as far as the
UBUNTU flashing dots. The screen goes blank and stays that way. The CD
doesn't flash, the hard disk drive doesn't flash, Ctrl-Alt-Delete doesn't work
and there is no cursor to move.

I was able to reboot in 9.04 in order to generate this request.

Had the same problem when I tried to do an upgrade from the internet. That
time I had to completely reformat the partition with GPart inorder to be able
to reload U9.04.

[Bug 627332] [NEW] Scroll bars do not appear correctly on new splits

2010-08-31 Thread Al
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim-gnome

vim-gnome 2:7.2.330-1ubuntu3
ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

Easiest steps to reproduce:

- Open gvim
- Maximise (currently reproduced under Compiz - not tried without)
- Open a file with more lines than available.
- :vsp

Expected behaviour: New split has a scrollbar on the right
Actual behaviour: Scrollbar exists, but appears to be attached to the outside
of the maximised window, and thus not visible.
Workaround: Restore gvim and maximise again. This is how it should originally
have displayed.

by "More lines than available" of course I mean "more lines than can be

Hi Al,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release
of Ubuntu.  ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ .  If the issue remains, please run
the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal).
It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report.

apport-collect -p linux 612156

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great.  It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .  Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.  This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message.  Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:

I believe this may be similar to this bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/2013529 as the workstations with
the issue are new vPro workstations.

The deployment issue is also similar to

[Bug 2108981] [NEW] samba segfaults when modifying any file

2025-04-24 Thread al
Public bug reported:

Release version: 25.04
Package vers: 2:4.21.4+dfsg-1ubuntu3

My server is an i5-6500 with 64GB RAM, a 250G boot SSD (ext4), 2x 1TB
SSDs in RAID1 (btrfs) and 2x 8TB HDDs in RAID 1 (btrfs).

I had 24.10 installed and samba had no problems. I upgraded to 25.04 and
samba now segfaults every time I modify a file. Creating a file is fine
that I can tell.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a blank file called test.txt and save it. It saves and opens fine.
2. Edit the file remotely then save (I am using xed on linux mint for text
files).
3. Close the file, then reopen. It will pop up with an error and act if it's
'corrupt'. It will not read until the service is restarted.
4. Open the file on the server using nano. It will have your changes in it as
if it saved just fine.
5. Restart smbd service. The file will load with the changes until it is edited
again.
6. See log file which will show a segfault error occurred.

I figured something got messed up during the update, so I cleaned my
boot SSD and reinstalled a fresh ubuntu 25.04 release. First and only
thing I installed was samba after mounting the storage disks and the
error still happens.

Reinstalled 24.10 and there are no issues. Files load, edit, and save
just fine.

Attached the log entry below generated from the
/var/log/samba/log.(client) file.

Currently I do not have 25.04 installed as I need my server working but
will try to update with as much info as I can as needed.

[Bug 2108981] Re: samba segfaults when modifying any file

2025-05-10 Thread al
Sadly, I had already reverted my server back to 24.10. However, I was
able to reproduce this on a virtual machine within virtualbox.

Steps I did:
- install 25.04 server image
- sudo apt-get install samba
- set up smbd.conf the same way as what I attached.
- touch test.txt
- restarted smbd
- mounted the share on my laptop, then edited that text file.
- Segfault occurs and files become unreadable like above.

Will attach everything asked and retain the virtual machine if more info
is needed.

/var/log/dist-upgrade is empty as it is a fresh install.

[Bug 2108981] Re: samba segfaults when modifying any file

2025-05-23 Thread al
Would it matter if it's an LXC as it shares the same kernel as the host?

I just did the same steps again on a brand new VM with a fresh 25.04
image downloaded just now and have the same issue. Although I did run
into something I didn't think to test:

I edited and saved the text file using vscodium on my host, no issues.
Loaded, edited again, saved, no issues.

I used 'xed', edited and saved. 'Corrupted' and the crash happens.

Why would the choice of text editor on my host crash the samba service
on my server?

[Bug 2108981] Re: samba segfaults when modifying any file

2025-05-23 Thread al
I just created an image in gimp (just a blank white box with some
gibberish text), saved it there. Then opened it, edited the image,
saved. Crash and corrupted gimp image. Cant copy it or do anything.

Oddly, text file still loads fine. It's like it's the specific file
stops working

Restarted smb. Image is fine and includes the change I made.

Edited text file with xed, saved. Opened, corrupted & crash. Gimp image
is fine with latest changes.

So to summarize what I did with this new VM:

- install ubuntu 25.04
- apt-get update & upgrade
- install samba
- edit smb.conf with above changes
- added samba password to user
- restart smb
- using xed: create a blank text file, save. Open, edit, save.
- using gimp: create an image, save. Open, make some change, save.

Attached all previously requested logs within a tar for this image.

[Bug 2108981] Re: samba segfaults when renaming a file with open RHW lease

2025-06-18 Thread al
Oh yikes, quite a rabbit hole indeed. Glad it finally happened for you
though.

It's odd that a bug like this wasn't reported sooner given how
widespread Mint is as an 'easy Windows replacement' and the fact that
it's on noble for their current release.

Oh well. Will keep watching for the plucky patches. Is there a known
specific version yet that will have all of these fixes in so I can watch
the plucky-updates PPA for it?
