2016-07-10 Thread Jo Christian
Seeing the same problem in my Dell XPS13 (2016) with intel card.
When the problem is presentm doing "sudo iwlist wlp58s0 scanning" makes wifi
work again for me.
Not the best fix but I don't need to reboot at least.

[Bug 1592822] Re: Charm push crashes when pushing 'big' charm.

2016-07-10 Thread John A Meinel
Is this a case that we are successfully sending data to squid at a reasonable
but slow rate, such that it takes more than 5 minutes to upload the whole
content and squid doesn't send anything to Apache until all of it has been
transferred.
It sounds like we'll have the same problem with resources. While it might allow
us to break up a large charm into a few smaller resources, AIUI some of the
charms have a single tarball that is more than 1GB in size. Arbitrarily
limiting the size is going to just cause people to work around the system (self
hosting, etc) Which breaks many of the benefits of having resources (demure
transfers, offline mirroring, etx)

[Bug 1600576] [NEW] Screen rolling/rotating horizontally when using specific applications

2016-07-10 Thread Amish Naidu
Public bug reported:

Sometimes the following graphics glitch is triggered where the screen starts
moving/rotating rapidly. See https://i.imgur.com/u6j5auo.gif (gedit on LXDE).
This is triggered semi-randomly while using specific apps like Kate, gEdit,
gVim, leafpad, embedded console inside Dolphin, KDevelop and rarely with
Konsole.
Also triggered for a few split-seconds when I move the mouse when in fullscreen
mode in VLC but stabilises quickly. However, everything is stable when I just
use Chrome or Firefox, LXTerminal, Clementine and Code::Blocks, even for hours.

Whenever this is triggered, it can sometimes be fixed when I switch to desktop
or Chrome or a different app while closing the trigger-er app while other
times, rebooting is the only way. Sometimes (rarely) the screen becomes
completely black after a while, with key-presses and mouse movements revealing
the screen for split-seconds which allows me to properly shutdown/restart the
laptop.
I've tried to Google the problem with no results, I'm not even sure what to
search for.

And I apologize if this isn't the correct place to report. I've already
tried a couple of places with no replies or help whatsoever.

[Bug 1600577] [NEW] Fullscreen videos stuttering in Firefox

2016-07-10 Thread Viktor Pal
Public bug reported:

All full screen videos are heavily stuttering in Firefox.
The stuttering is very heavy, it basically stops for a few seconds then jumps
to a next frame, again stops for a few seconds then again jumps to a next frame.
There is absolutely no continuous play, it just jumps from one frame to the
other.

Videos in Chromium work fine.

Restarting Firefox does not help.
Restarting gnome-shell does not help.

When I restart the whole computer it is okay for a short time, but it
gets into this state very quickly.

Although this happens in Firefox I'm not sure if this is a Firefox bug
or a bug in some underlying infrastructure like xorg or video driver.

I would be happy to debug this if someone could tell me in where I
should start.

[Bug 1600579] [NEW] zfsutils-linux scrub cron job fails

2016-07-10 Thread Tim Bishop
Public bug reported:

The cron job for zfsutils-linux fails to run. The problem is that $PATH
(on xenial, at least) is set to /bin:/usr/bin. The zpool binary is in
/sbin and the /usr/lib/zfs-linux/scrub script (below) doesn't give the
full path or modify $PATH. Further, the 2>&1 ensures that the useful
error is sent to awk and not stderr where it'd be more easily noticed.

The fix is to just s,zpool,/sbin/zpool, in the script. And probably
remove the stderr redirection, since I'm not sure if it's actually
useful here.

This is the script as it currently is, for reference:

#!/bin/sh -eu

# Scrub all healthy pools.
zpool list -H -o health,name 2>&1 | \
awk 'BEGIN {FS="\t"} {if ($1 ~ /^ONLINE/) print $2}' | \
while read pool
do
zpool scrub "$pool"
done

[Bug 1600580] [NEW] unity-greeter icons under Ubuntu dashpanel after one time logout/login

2016-07-10 Thread Paperman199
Public bug reported:

I have some trouble with dash panel, it's starts after I suspend my laptop and
when I login into the system again I start see the unity-greeter icons under my
dash panel in right top corner. Please see screenshot. For now I use Ubuntu
16.04 on HP ProBook 6460b with HD3000.
I try to ask into http://askubuntu.com but no one answers about it. Problem
fixes for one time if I execute "sudo service lightdm restart", but in next
iteration it will happens again.

[Bug 1600581] [NEW] rhythmbox segfault when scanning files, on non-media file

2016-07-10 Thread Carsten
Public bug reported:

rhythmbox crashes with segfault every time shortly after startup since my
upgrade from ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04.
This is while importing media files.

My music library is in ~/Musik, Musik is a soft link to a directory on an
encrypted partition.
~/Musik is set in the preferences, yet rhythmbox still looks at my whole file
system.

The last file mentioned in the output of "rhythmbox -d >rb.out" is not always
the same.
It is however the same if I run rhythmbox several times in a row.
It seems to be always outside of my music library.
A few 1000 files are imported before the crash occurs.

[Bug 1575789] Re: Card Style missing styles and doesn't work

2016-07-10 Thread Davide
In Xubuntu 16.04 cards style menu works perfectly (after installing
gnome-cards-data): perhaps it isn't a aisleriot bug.

[Bug 1460458] Re: [system settings] Dual Sim; no possibility to switch on or off each sim card completely.

2016-07-10 Thread Peter Bittner
Pat, another motivation for this feature: The SIM cards I have are from
2 different countries, so very rarely (almost never) I use them both at
the same time. I want to switch off one of the SIM cards manually so
that my phone stops searching for its home network (and can thus save
energy).

See the duplicate bug 1589706 for details.

  Description of problem:

Any dialog for accessing files from firefox (download or upload) now has
wonky behavior.
  - Single clicks in the file list seem to be like drag operations
  - Single click in the favorites expose a similar behavior, but only on the
personal favorites
  - Double click seems to work fine in the file list
  - Sometimes one has to double click the "Save" or "Upload" button for it to
take an action
-
- Here's an example of what it looks like

[Bug 1460458] Re: [system settings] Dual Sim; no possibility to switch on or off each sim card completely.

2016-07-10 Thread Anupam
I second Peter. I sometime find myself in places where one of the SIMs
doesn't get any coverage & it leads to a rapid battery draining. One
possible workaround is to have SIM PINs set and then rebooting the
device without unlocking the unwanted SIM.

[Bug 1599516] Re: Accented letters not shown in window title bars and dash

** Description changed:

  Hi,

- I've noticed 2 problems since few days in 16.04 Unity :
+ I've noticed problems with accented letters since few days in 16.04
+ Unity :

  - in window title bar, accented letters are replaced with « square
symbols ». It happens in all softwares when windows are not maximized.
Once maximized, accented letters are correctly shown ( in top panel, for
example : Vidéos, Téléchargements… ). Wrong display of accented letters
comes back once window is un-maximized.

  - in dash, accented letters are ignored. If I type « démarrage » on
keyboard I get « dmarrage » in dash

- I did not have those behaviors some days ago.
+ - [edit] same behaviour in HUD, no accented letters there either, which
+ is very annoying in french.

Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu

I found a corresponding bug report in Debian, so I've attached a bug

documentation has been built in version 0.16.1-2 on Ubuntu 15.10 and
later releases.

[Bug 1600594] [NEW] Ubiquity installer should calculate need disk space more accurate (I can't believe that 8.4 Gb is not enough for 32-bit installation)

2016-07-10 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download latest 16.10 cdimage (for example this -
e5bbe3a90fb7aaf98b0371effc008d3b *yakkety-desktop-i386.iso)
2. Insert 8 Gb SD card (or USB flash - /dev/sdd) into computer.
3. Try to install 16.10 on SD/USB memory with kvm (sudo kvm -m 1024 -vga std
-hda /dev/sdd -cdrom yakkety-desktop-i386.iso -boot d)
4. Select "Install Ubuntu" in boot menu, select language and click "Continue"
in the installer.
5. Get message
"You need at least 8.4 GB disk space to install Ubuntu.
This computer has only 8.1 GB".
- so I can't install Ubuntu 16.10.

Expected results
1. User can install Ubuntu on 8 GB free space.

Actual results:
1. User can't install Ubuntu on 8 GB free space.

Note:
I'll test previous versions of Ubuntu. I can't remember any problems installing
them on small disk drives.

[Bug 1578193] Re: cannot load legacy-only plugin

2016-07-10 Thread Mike Dean
I have also been unable to find a solution to this 2 month old problem
and it's very discouraging since it worked without problem in the 15.10.
I've been unable to discover the break point as it seems that all the
version should be working so I'm starting to wonder if it's something as
simple as a permissions problem.

[Bug 1600595] [NEW] Ability to view and change minimized state through Activities Overview

2016-07-10 Thread Launching Dumplings
Public bug reported:

I find the Activities Overview very useful as especially when I have many
windows open I can just easily go into it to switch between or close some.
However there is something I feel is lacking there: the ability to change the
minimized state of the windows.

What I would really like to see would be the ability to:

 1. Differentiate between windows which are minimized and which are not
 2. To be able to easily change whether a window is minimized or not as easily
as with closing them

I don't know about the second request, but I've definitely seen others
asking for the first. I am running Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 with GNOME 3.20
and I would really love to see these features in the next GNOME version.

[Bug 1600599] [NEW] Thermald is totally broken, or its default configuration is

2016-07-10 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

** WORKAROUND**: shut down the thermald process completely. If your
computer has an actual physical cooling fan and it's fully functional,
you don't need thermald at all.

I have Ubuntu 15.10 up to date with automatic updates and I never touched
thermald configuration.
This is on a laptop, which has an actual physical cooling fan (like most
laptops).

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
as the CPU temperature increases, the fan should spin faster to keep the
temperature from getting too high. ONLY IF, even with the fan at its full
capacity, or approaching it, the temperature keeps growing, THEN that's when
powerclamp and things like that should trigger, throttling the CPU, so that it
doesn't burn (or shut down abruptly). Also, these kinds of CPU throttling
should come in gradually as needed. That is, if you inject idle processes, you
should inject just the minimum amount that is needed. For example, if the fan
at its maximum speed is *almost* enough to keep the temperature below the
threshold, but not *quite* enough, injecting just a small amount of idle time
into the CPU should be enough to do that extra bit of cooling that is needed.
You would barely notice it. It would not slow your system down a lot, unless
the heating is *way* higher than the fan alone can fight.

On a fully functional system (where the fan is enough to prevent the CPU
from overheating and/or excessive CPU consumption does not occur in a
huge degree for a long time), you shouldn't note any difference by
shutting down thermald completely. Only on a system where the fan is not
fully functional and/or hugely excessive CPU usage goes on for too long
(actually, if the latter alone is enough to make it happen, it means
that the fan is underdimensioned) would you notice the difference
between having thermald (powerclamp and other CPU throttling mechanisms
would kick in and prevent the temperature from becoming critical) and
not having it (temperature would eventually go critical and something
bad would happen, such as a sudden shutdown)

OBSERVED BEHAVIOR
When CPU temperature becomes high due to relatively high (not huge) CPU
consumption, intel_powerclamp starts to kick in injecting idle processes and
crippling the whole system. The observable result is that the system becomes
unresponsive and unusable, yet the physical fan is sponning at roughly HALF of
its maximum speed. So, you have a fast quad core machine, with a cooling fan
that is perfectly capable of keeping the temperature down while using all the
computing power that you require, BUT since powerclamp and things like that
kick in too soon, you are limited to use a tiny fraction of the power your
machine is capable of.
To put it another way: you can't watch a f***ing youtube video in full screen
because the whole system will become unresponsive.
Even after removing and blacklisting the intel_powerclamp and intel_rapl kernel
modules, the apparent behavior was practically the same, except that I wouldn't
observe the "kidle_inject" processes by running "top". I guess there are other
CPU-throttling mechanisms besides powerclamp and rapl.

So now I have SHUT DOWN THERMALD completely, and my system behaves
NORMALLY. The fan, of course, reaches higher speeds. Not even _much_
higher, which means that it needed just a little bit more speed to keep
up with the heating. Powerclamp and other cpu throttling mechanisms were
kicking in WAY too soon.

It took me quite a long time to figure out that this was the problem. I
just assumed that some bug was causing excessive CPU consumption for
trivial stuff such as playing video (which is actually true but is not
the whole story) and that the CPU consumption actually was causing too
much heat for the fan to dissipate, making it necessary for powerclamp
to kick in. Also, I thought my fan was probably filled with dust and
uncapable of doing its job efficiently (which is also true but is not
the whole story).

Until I realised that when I was observing unresponsiveness, the fan was
not even close to its maximum speed.

CONCLUSION: either thermald does a ridiculously bad job, or its default
configuration is ridiculously bad.

NOTE: this issue is **CRITICAL**: this cripples the whole system making it
unresponsive when doing moderately heavy work (which the system would otherwise
be perfectly capable of handling without overheating).
Most non-geek users don't even know what thermald is and will never find out
that they can work around the problem by shutting it down, let alone fix its
configuration. So, for most users, this "renders the system temporarily or
permanently unusable", which is one of the criteria for critical importance.

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-07-10 Thread Zisu Andrei
Hello everyone and future posters.

In order to keep the noise to a minimum, if you wish to +1 this bug, you
can use the top button which asks if this bug report is affecting you.
The switching terminals workaround has been confirmed time and again so
reiterating it adds absolutely no value.

However, it has been observed that switching the version of the Intel
graphics driver fixes the problem, so if you want to be truly helpful,
use the git bisect feature and try and identify which commit fixes the
issue.

When I boot my laptop and get to the lightdm login prompt, the screen

This is indeed expected in such a case with the 'full' image.
The solution is to start with the 'mini.iso' and then install what you need
(after purging the meta packages of course; aka (x/k/ubuntu-destop ,
xorg-input-all & xorg-video-all)

Re: [Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-07-10 Thread Shawn B.
I'd be willing to try the got feature and apply to locate the fix. Can
you provide more information on how to accomplish that? Such as the URL
to bisect from, a list of potential revisions to try, etc? I've used got
to clone, branch, commit, and sync but that's it. I'd love to track this
bug down and squish it.

Hello everyone and future posters.

In order to keep the noise to a minimum, if you wish to +1 this bug, you

The switching terminals workaround has been confirmed time and again so
reiterating it adds absolutely no value.

However, it has been observed that switching the version of the Intel
graphics driver fixes the problem, so if you want to be truly helpful,
use the git bisect feature and try and identify which commit fixes the
issue.

[Bug 1559576] Re: Ubuntu GNOME boots to black screen when using proprietary Nvidia drivers on a laptop with Optimus

2016-07-10 Thread Simon Bursten
I had the same issue on my Asus N552VX laptop. Installing 367.27 from
nvidia-367 worked fine after running prime-select intel but prime-select
nvidia would lead to the login loop issue people have noted here. Once
logged in via the intel graphics option nvidia-settings wouldn't load.

nvidia-xconfig
dpkg-reconfigure gdm3

from Ctrl + Alt + F1 shell fixed the issue for me. The driver is still
broken as multiple screens don't work under nvidia mode, but I can get
away with playing games under nvidia mode and working under intel mode.

Actually, that is obviously not the same issue, since I disabled rapl
before I disabled thermald, and I stopped observing the kernel log
spam, but was still observing this issue.

So unless this is a duplicate of another one, this is not invalid, and
the fact that EOL is near doesn't make it any more so. Feel free to
change the status to "Won't fix" once EOL is actually reached.

Still present in 16.04 LTS. Lmod http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/lmod
might be a good alternative.

Re: [Bug 1599952] Re: i915 driver not supported in kernels after 4.2.x

2016-07-10 Thread RD
Very well. I'll need to reinstall 14.04.4, as that is the only one I
have that works. All of the 16.04 flavors run with unreadable
displays. Let me know if that will be useful for you, and I'll do it today.

** Description changed:

My laptop (HP Pavilion 15-ab141na) is simply booting to a black screen
on 16.04, the backlight is on but there is no display. Sound is working

[Bug 1577162] Re: Screens briefly blacks out at lightdm prompt

2016-07-10 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
YS1, unfortunately you didn't follow all the instructions in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1577162/comments/2
and what it provided is useless.

** Attachment removed: "Dependencies.txt"

** Attachment removed: "JournalErrors.txt"

** Attachment removed: "ProcEnviron.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1577162/+attachment/4698339/+files/ProcEnviron.txt

** Description changed:

When I boot my laptop and get to the lightdm login prompt, the screen
blacks out for a fraction of second. This happens each time, only once,
and does not prevent logging in.

In fact it is not only a display glitch : if I start to type my password
before the blackout, the typed characters are lost when normal display
  resumes.

  So lightdm might be restarting.

This is only mildly annoying, but I am also experiencing other graphical
problems which may be or not be related (namely #1568604).
