[Bug 690538] [NEW] The laptop no longer recognises whether the charger is plugged in or not, doesn't suspend when lid is closed

2010-12-15 Thread Nicholas Christian Langkjær Ipsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The laptop no longer detects when the charger is plugged in or out, and
doesn't suspend when the lid is closed. It still detects it in some way
though, as the screen turns off.

The settings haven't been changed since it worked, and are as I expect
them to be. The cause may have been either an update, or the failed
hibernation I attempted after installing that same update. When I
resumed after the hibernation, performance was very sluggish, so I
rebooted, and this problem was there.

[Bug 690539] [NEW] Initial search tool window size too small

2010-12-15 Thread Mikko Ohtamaa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Ubuntu 10.10.

Expected result:

Get good look on search results.

Actual results:

Frustrated scrolling to every direction.

The initial Window size is too small (1920x1200 screen) and Folder
column is cut off. The user needs to do lot of unnecessary resize,
scrolling, etc. for browsing the search results.

Suggestion

1) Maximize the window on launch

2) Have 640 x 400 size on launch

3) Adjust window size dynamically on launch (80% of screen size)

[Bug 690541] [NEW] Search tool window lacks resize handle

2010-12-15 Thread Mikko Ohtamaa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Ubuntu 10.10

Expected result:

Resizing search tool window is easy

Actual result:

Resizing search tool window is difficult, because it lacks bottom right
corner resize handle (same as in Nautilus). As the window is dialogue
like, it might not initially appear suitable size depending on the
context: physical screen size and the number of search results might
want you to make resize the window.

2010-12-15 Thread Robert Roth
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

I don't understand this part -- where else would the live system write
updated files if not to the persistent file? The original squashfs is
read-only.

> 2. jockey does not detect the limited system space issue (this bug)

I think we really ought to just disable installing big drivers such as
nvidia or fglrx on the live system. It was never meant to actually
work there.

Thanks for the analysis,

[Bug 96705] Re: Unclear language about Automatic Updates in Software Sources

2010-12-15 Thread justindisgustin
I'm a relatively advanced user and there was no way for me to feel confident in
choosing one of these options without doing research. Not only is the wording
ambiguous, but the options are too few. For example, what if for some reason I
wanted the security updates to be downloaded in the background? Or what if I
wanted all updates to be automatically installed?
These seem like separate issues but they are part of why the ambiguous wording
is problematic. Why does one of these options pertain to security updates
only, while the other two pertain to all updates? This adds to the confusion.
I like the idea of a grid of radio buttons that was suggested, but if the text
could be made more clear and possibly have the option to hover over or click on
the text for more detailed information, it would help too.
Something should be changed, anyway. I think that this should actually be a
higher priority because even though it's an issue of wording, the wording is
describing settings for a very important function. I think to say that this is
of low importance is like saying that documentation for a given software is
trivial. If everything works as intended by the developer but people don't
know how the developer intended it to work, the potential for misuse is great.

** Description changed:

- In Feisty the options for automatic updates in the Software Sources
- window are unclear.
+ In Feisty, Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic and Lucid the options for automatic
+ updates in the Software Sources window are unclear.

  Currently they are:

  -Install security updates without confirmation.
-Download all updates in the background
  -Only Notify about updates

Which leads to the obvious, and I imagine wrong-headed, question - What
if I want to install security updates without confirmation and download
  all updates in the background?

I can infer that the security policy goes from most automated to least,
and so that if I'm installing security updates I'm also downloading the
rest. But why not spell it a little more clearly? I remember the old
language seemed good but this is the best I can do, ordered from least
  automated to most:

Notify about available updates and ask for permission to install.
- but don't install any.
+  but don't install any.
Download all updates in the background and install security updates without
confirmation.

If that is too long, I think this might be explicit enough, though still
  potentially ambiguous.

  Only notify about available updates.
Download all updates in the background.
Download all updates in the background and install security updates without
confirmation.

I'm not sure to understand what you mean by a "mbrola-voices package",
and in particular, "mbrola package has already a suggestion for this
package on Karmic, even though this package still needs to be created.":
mbrola suggests mbrola-voice (provided by all mbrola voice packages),
not mbrola-voices. Would mrbola-voices just be a meta-package which
depends on all the voices available in Ubuntu? Since that would result
in installing several hundreds of Megabytes, I'm not sure it would
really be useful to have.

[Bug 690549] [NEW] uid and guid setting adversely affects integrity

2010-12-15 Thread Chris Hanson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: duplicity

Ubuntu 10.10 Server
Duplicity 0.6.11(compiled, not apt-get)

I have an Ubuntu machine importing nfs shares from my various systems,
including those exported from Windows machines (via Cygwin). I backup
all my computers from this system; it makes maintenance easy, and
duplicity is a fantastic solution. Unfortunately there is a segment of
code which modifies the uid and gid (in tarfile.py::getheader) for any
file whose id's are larger than 2097151 (2^21 -1), and for my Windows 7
systems, the Administrators group possesses a gid of -1, which is
interpreted as (4^32 -1). The section of code changes these id's to
60001. This will be a problem during disaster recovery.

I attached a patch that solves the problem by extending the gid and uid
fieldsize.

The bug appears before I even install, so I'd think that to be
irrelevant.

[Bug 662998] Re: System freezes when running on battery

2010-12-15 Thread Apron
I confirm the post above.
I did not have any problems on 10.04.

Alt+PrtScrn+REISUB won't work in this case.
If I remove ATI proprietary drivers and use open source ones, laptop will not
freeze, but crashes X and throws me to login instead...
I can also confirm that the fan starts to spin faster when the system freezes /
logs me out.
If I login with the safe mode session or low-res failsafe Xorg, system works
fine...

I tried to move to older / newer kernel than the default one, but with no luck.
Going back to pm-utils v.1.3 didn't solve the problem...no difference if it's
on battery or AC power, it freezes anyway...

Strange thing is that, if I reboot / shut down the system a few times,
it starts to behave normally till the next reboot...

[Bug 632231] Re: Keyboard locks up after login, no desktop appears

2010-12-15 Thread Nicholas Christian Langkjær Ipsen
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: gdm
+ When trying to boot the LiveCD, or an Ubuntu 10.10 installation upgraded
+ from 10.04, the computer completely freezes. I can get in by adding
+ nomodeset to the boot options. After installing the proprietary nVidia
+ driver, everything works as expected.

- When trying to install Maverick on my Desktop, I ran into quite a few
- issues. First off, when using the live cd and selecting "Install
- Ubuntu," the installer didn't appear, only the top "panel" with the
- Sound and Shutdown icons, which didn't work. I then tried to use the
- other option "Try Ubuntu without installing," but that simply left me
- staring at the plymouth screen. If seemed like everything loaded, just
- in the background. Also, the keyboard locked up, and even the *lock keys
- didn't work, unless I used "ctrl+alt+sysrq+r".
+ I've tested this with both 10.10, and the latest daily of 11.04.

- Finally, I successfully installed it with the alternative cd, but now
- I'm again stuck with a locked keyboard and a cursor, only this time it's
- not during plymouth, but just after having logged in using GDM! Only the
- cursor and the default wallpaper are on the screen; no icons, no panels,
- no nothing. I can move the cursor so it's not a total freeze.
-
- I was able to use ctrl+alt+F1 to get to a TTY before logging in, and
- installed all available updates. Didn't help. I also tried Gnome Safe
- Mode, and Unity. Same result. Haven't tried KDM yet, will do if it
- helps.
+ This is the same as a bug I reported earlier, bug #632231, but since
+ that one got off-track I've marked it as invalid, and submitted this
+ report with what I hope is a clearer description of the bug, and hope to
+ have a good cooperation and get it solved.

[Bug 165245] Re: [needs-packaging] festival-mbrola

2010-12-15 Thread Samuel thibault
Err, why having to complete 543651 first? To get a much better fine-
grain dependency, festival-mbrola should rather build a series of
packages, one for each language, each of which depending on the
corresponding mbrola voice package. If you depend on all the mbrola
voices at once, you'll get several MiB installation while only 4
languages are supported so far.

Apart from that, yes it's probably a good idea to package festival-
mbrola (though the /usr/local parts of paths are probably wrong :) ). I
would suggest to maintain it in a repository shared with Debian. I don't
know the ubuntu possibilites, but alioth.debian.org happily greets and
give write access to guests.

[Bug 690552] [NEW] Wrong video port used at boot

2010-12-15 Thread AshleyKirby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

New installation of Ubuntu 10.10, 64-bit.

Video card is an nVidia 9600 GSO with VGA and DVI outputs.
Connected to monitor with the DVI connector.

Booting from Live CD works fine, and installation is carried out without
a hitch.

After completing the installation process, the system attempts its first
boot using the built in video drivers. After loading from Grub, the
video goes dead and the system becomes unresponsive.

After some experimentation, I discovered that the system was booting
successfully, but it was attempting to use the unconnected VGA output on
my video card. After fighting with the driver settings and swapping
various video cables back and forth, I was able to achieve video output
from the DVI connection. Any workaround that doesn't involve fighting
with multiple display cables would be acceptable until an actual fix is
provided.

I can confirm this on Kubuntu 10.10 (maverick). Trying Christians workaround I
found a solution, that worked for me:
uninstalling (+removing config) of kde, gnome and gkt integration by
 sudo apt-get remove --purge openoffice.org-gnome openoffice.org-gtk
openoffice.org-kde
and reinstalling openoffice.org-kde by
 sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-kde

Now the dialogs are fine, hope it stays like this...

[Bug 308191] Re: Multitouch support not available for Synaptics touchpads v7.2

2010-12-15 Thread Anton
I don't know if I should report this here or in the clickpad buttons bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/582809

I've tested the 1.1.0 package, and it compiles Ok and works of for two finger
scroll and three finger paste.
But with clickpads, you cannot click+drag, because as they heve a full
sensitive surface with no physical separated buttons,
when you press the touchpad with a second finger to make the click, the driver
detects two fingers and so, stops the cursor and start scrolling. Same happens
if you made a click, and with the finger pressing the surface (in button area)
you put another finger to drag the thing below the cursor.
Testing Win7 synaptic driver behaviour, it seems that it takes into account the
delay or time between one finger and two finger touchs. i.e.,
If you put two fingers in the touchpad more or less simultaneously, it behaves
as two finger detected and start scrolling, but
if you put first one finger, and then the second finger with some delay (~0.5s
or more), cursor moves as if only one finger was detected, and so, you can
click and then touch and drag. Same if you are moving one finger on the
touchpad (moving the cursor) and then touch with other finger to do a click for
example, the driver behaves as if only the initial finger was over the
touchpad, allowing you to click with the other.
In fact, it seems that Win7 syn. dirver doesn't use the area marked as left
buttton for anything, you can click+drag or move+click or scroll with two
finger simultaneously in any place. The only diference is when you make the
click in right-bottom area designated as right button, that it then behaves as
right click.

- issue also occurs with the Nouveau Nvidia driver and not only the proprietary

- "to unlock the mouse" you actually have to kill the nautilus process from the

[Bug 690285] Re: Multiple brasero instances=stuck cdrom

2010-12-15 Thread tsg1zzn
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

When burning a CD using Brasero and trying to start another instance of
Brasero (to do cover design), both instances die (no brasero is running
  any more).

The result of this is that I am left with a half-written CD in the
drive, and it CANNOT BE EJECTED. I cannot kill brasero because it is not
running. The CD cannot be unmounted, because it is not mounted in the
first place. It cannot be ejected by pressing the button on my computer.
It cannot be ejected by right-clicking on the device in nautilus and
selecting eject. It cannot be ejected by opening a terminal and typing
"eject -r". Even after running "echo 0 > /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/lock" as
root it CANNOT BE EJECTED. Even after logging out and logging in again,
  it STILL CANNOT BE EJECTED.

Further more, when selecting system -> shut down... and then RESTART
(last resort), the computer WOULD NOT RESTART. Instead I get logged out
to GDM. Selecting restart in GDM worked, but but this entire process
left me as an unhappy user.

The unability to eject CDs from Linux was a MAJOR NUISANCE TEN YEARS
AGO. It must be fixed soon.

[Bug 690580] [NEW] Black screen with DVI to HDMI converter with Radeon card and xf86-video-radeon

2010-12-15 Thread Fredrik Paulsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I get no signal on my hdtv when connecting it to the computer with a
hdmi cable via a dvi to hdmi converter from the dvi port of the graphics
card (ATI Technologies Inc RV610 video device Radeon HD 2400 PRO).
xrandr reports that the tv is connected but no image is shown.

The dvi port works when connecting it directly to a monitor. The
converter and hdmi cable works when connecting it to a Mac mini.

I run Ubuntu 10.10 with kernel 2.6.35 but I also tested kernel 2.6.36
for Maverick from the Kernel Team, but with no luck. I also gave the
Natty alpha live dvd a try but I had the same experience there.

[Bug 690576] [NEW] Evolution webdav and couchdb addressbooks not visible in OOo

2010-12-15 Thread David Sterratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I have been trying to print labels from Writer using my evolution
address book, which uses the evolution-data-server webdav backend.
However, tables in the webdav backend aren't visible in evolution; only
the file, ldap and groupwise backends are visible. Also, the recently
introduced couchdb backend is not visible in OOo. I think both backends
should be visible.

I've actually filed a bug on the openoffice.org site about this:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=116116

However, reading this bug on launchpad
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/324896
it's not clear whether the right place to report the bug is actually
openoffice.org.

[Bug 689306] Re: package python2.7-minimal 2.7 .1-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: подпроцесс установлен сценарий post-installation воз вратил код ошибки 3

2010-12-15 Thread Matthias Klose
for #8, see bug #689615.

for anything else:

 - run: dpkg -l python-minimal python python-dev
see which packages are installed (lines starting with ii)
 - get these packages from
   https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-defaults
(search for Natty Nharwhal), select the version and
   follow the build link)
 - get the python2.7-minimal and python2.7 package from
   https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python2.7
 - use sudo dpkg --unpack to unpack these packages.
Maybe you need to use dpkg --unpack --force-depends
 - run sudo dpkg --configure --pending
 - finish with an apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

[Bug 661024] Re: etckeeper fail to work when installed during installation

Fixing this in Maverick involves respinning an install media, since
etckeeper at install-time will be pulled from the CD, so I don't think
that will happen...

[Bug 690578] [NEW] I have exactly the same problem - please solution

2010-12-15 Thread bigfoot73
Public bug reported:

I have the latest updates for 10.10 on the laptop. I have been having
trouble for the last few months with the screensaver. When the computer
goes idle for the allotted time it does not activate the screen saver.
It instead jumps to locking me out and killing all of the programs that
I was working on. Several times I have lost presentations or word docs
because I have to leave the computer for a few minutes. I have tried
changing the config file so that there is a delay between the lock out
screen and the screensaver. I have turned off the lock out option in the
screen saver menu. I have check and rechecked the power settings. I am
no closer than I was before to solving this. I teach and there are
several times in the past week that I have lost the presentation because
I was demonstration something and the computer went into the lock out
screen and I had to restart everything. Is this a bug or am I missing a
fix somewhere?
