If you need to upgrade ALSA drivers, please follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa . They provide ways that are easier, and proper ways of uninstalling if you want to return to the previous state. Unfortunately it is very difficult to know in what way the ubuntu forums guide degraded your system. :-(
