[Bug 682986] Re: borders and panels disappears whenever appearance is changed

2010-11-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, yeah when you switch between different window managers, the new
window manager has to recreate all the window decorations. That's why
the borders and buttons disappear. The panel is part of the window
manager too, so when switching WM's that'll disappear too. So, so far
it isn't sounding like an X issue actually.

Maybe it would help if you write down the exact steps you do to
reproduce the issue, and indicate expected / actual results.

Oh also, if your goal here is just to get your system back into a usable
state you may want to make use of askubuntu.com.

I should have said in the original bug report (although it is implicit),
that I would like this package synced with the debian testing package.

Re: [Bug 681348] Re: Add "show me the desktop" keyboard shortcut

I like the idea of putting it in the bottom left of the launcher. For
Ubuntu Lite, we could skip the use of the Desktop Folder and keep the
Windows Switcher in the bottom left.

Interesting that I don't have a "tickbox to allow executing file as

read/write/execute at all levels, it will also work but not my preferred
solution.

2010-11-30 Thread Juaco
I'm sorry for not reporting this before, i'm on 10.04 too and a from a few
months age i have been able to solve this by using a 2.6.35 kernel from the
Kernel PPA.

uname -r is:

2.6.35-15-generic

Whenever i get back to the official Ubuntu kernel, i get back to the same
(too old i must say) issues.

[Bug 653134] Re: Can't boot Ubuntu after an upgrade from 10.04.1 to 10.10

2010-11-30 Thread bcbc
OK I have the permanent fix for 10.10 Probably works on 10.04.1 too.

First back up /boot/grub
sudo cp -r /boot/grub /boot/grubbackup

Then delete all the stuff in /boot/grub that isn't supposed to be there
(everything added after fresh wubi install)
 cd /boot/grub
sudo rm *.mod
sudo rm *.img
sudo rm *.lst
sudo rm *.o
sudo rm *.pf2
sudo rm -rf locale

This leaves 2 files:
b...@ubuntu:/boot/grub$ ls
grub.cfg grubenv

Update the grub.cfg automatically:
sudo update-grub

FIXED!

Not done yet - prevent grub updates from breaking it again:
Go to Synatpic, select packages grub-pc and grub-common, click on Package, Lock
Version

For the developers, these are the differences between /boot/grub/ and
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/ which probably indicate the problem areas --- the locale
directory for one.
b...@ubuntu:/boot/grub$ diff -r /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/ /boot/grubbeforetest/

[Bug 682986] Re: borders and panels disappears whenever appearance is changed

2010-11-30 Thread zeruke
this is using the 11.04 pre alpha and i wasn't sure what to put down on
this through using ubuntu-bug and as i stated all i have to do is
change setting in compiz or change the themes through the appearance
preferencesome times it keeps working for a while but most of the
time it just messes upall of the other versions of ubuntu doesn't do
this which is what tells me it is some sort of bug dealing with 11.04
and how it works with gnome, unity, and compiz

also this happens on both the classic desktop choice and the default
desktop

[Bug 678419] Re: volname does not work for dvd's / udf images

2010-11-30 Thread Evan Broder
I think a patch that uses libudf would be better, since libudf is
already in main and libdvdread is not - you wouldn't need to go through
the MIR process.

libudf, though in main, also isn't in the default desktop install
currently, but that's not really a big issue, as it's miniscule.

Dan, can you try to come up with a patch that uses libudf? I'm going to
unsubscribe ubuntu-sponsors while you work on that, but feel free to
resubscribe when you have a new patch ready.

Thanks for working on this.

[Bug 681249] Re: gtkpod hangs on attempt to sync contacts

2010-11-30 Thread Michael Hendry
I've just realised that it's necessary to prefix "sh " to the command
line to ensure that the synchronisation script is called.

There's still one problem in this part of the setup - gtkpod "forgets"
the sync commands when it's shut down and replaces them with the default
values the next time I insert my iPod.

[Bug 661294] Re: System lock-up when receiving large files (big data amount) from NFS server

2010-11-30 Thread Stefan Bader
David is right here. One of the bugs mentioned by Thag seems even gone
since a while (the last comments I see are from 2008). The other bugs
seem to relate to a server side NFS lockup and seemed to produce stack
traces on the server. Reading there it seems that this issue should be
fixed now and that fix was part of 2.6.32-20.29 for Lucid and the
initial release of Maverick.

So we should concentrate on receiving files in this bug report. If I understand
correctly the server side is unaffected and shows no messages. And the client
can re-connect after the reset?
David, if you could try to see whether doing the file copy on the text console
(vt1) shows some messages when locking up. And just to mention, yes surely
using the user-space nfs server changes the problem (or maybe avoids it). It is
completely different code (and presumably slower). But it may as well be only
the client side and it would be good to find the problem there. And to
understand it better we need to find out how to trigger it reliably (and
hopefully get some data out of it).

[Bug 637454] Re: build-depends snarfing should also "cross" the arch-specific build-depends

2010-11-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package armel-cross-toolchain-base - 1.53

---
armel-cross-toolchain-base (1.53) natty; urgency=low

  [ Michael Hope ]
  * fixed build for non-standard PF.

  [ Marcin Juszkiewicz ]
  * added binutils-arm-linux-gnueabi to build-conficts as we need binutils
which know what sysroot is during build.
  * added fakeroot dependency
  * dropped g++-multilib dependency - closes LP: #637454
  * updated to natty versions
- dropped binutils patch as it got merged in natty (bumped binutils
  dependency)
  * use gcc-4.4 to compile binutils and eglibc (update to gcc-4.5 is on
todolist)
  * do not copy gcc patches anymore as this is symlink to debian/patches

[Bug 615953] Re: busybox sed core dump

2010-11-30 Thread Steve Beattie
I've reproduced the issue with the version of eglibc in maverick-
updates, 2.12.1-0ubuntu9, on i386-only, and can confirm that the version
in maverick-proposed, 2.12.1-0ubuntu10, fixes it. I've added a testcase
for it in the lp:qa-regression-testing tree (http://bazaar.launchpad.net
/~ubuntu-bugcontrol/qa-regression-testing/master/revision/1030) and have
verified that the version in proposed does not regress with any of the
testcases for eglibc in that tree. I've also been running the proposed
version of eglibc on 3 different systems with no noticable ill effects.

For lucid, I am unable to reproduce the issue with the version of eglibc
in lucid-updates, 2.11.1-0ubuntu7.5, but I can confirm that the version
in lucid-proposed, 2.11.1-0ubuntu7.6, also is not affected and that it
also passes the rest of the glibc regression tests. Marking
verification-done.

Also, presumably there will have to be a no-change rebuild of busybox
and any other package that statically links against eglibc and makes use
of strspn, once this SRU goes through.

So I am opening new bug, because problem persists on server release and
bug was closed as invalid for linux-meta.

[Bug 681294] Re: [STAGING] X doesn't start with 2.6.37-6+

2010-11-30 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
2.6.36-7 is broken too.
I confirm that the system is not dead because I can ssh into it.
Let me know which useful information I can collect while the system is in this
state.

** Summary changed:

- [STAGING] X doesn't start with 2.6.37-6
+ [STAGING] X doesn't start with 2.6.37-6+

** Description changed:

  Last known good version: 2.6.37-5
+ Broken with 2.6.37-6, 2.6.37-7

Steps to reproduce: Boot with 2.6.37-6

The system boots correctly but X doesn't start. The screen changes from
'Aubergine' to completely 'black' when switching from plymouth to gdm.

The system doesn't seem completely dead because there is disk activity
but the keyboard doesn't respond and I can not switch to a console.

[Bug 650539] Re: SRU: Launching a Qt app crashes X when using Xinerama

I'm seeing the same problem as Jérôme and Mauro. I have exactly one
NVIDIA display adapter, using the proprietary driver (version 173 and
"current" both exhibit the problem), and the adapter is attached to
exactly one monitor. Emacs, rxvt, VLC, and xawtv crash the server.
Here is the Xorg output:

  Backtrace:
  0: X (xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x80e82fb]
  1: X (0x8048000+0x5da8d) [0x80a5a8d]

  8: X (0x8048000+0x1a191) [0x8062191]
  Segmentation fault at address (nil)

Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

I ran through half of the demos in the "qtdemo" package and none crashed
the server. (I don't have all the KDE infrastructure installed, so I
didn't test that.) The server does *not* crash when using the free-
software NVIDIA driver.

I have not been able to disable the Xinerama extension either by putting
'Option "Xinerama" "0"' in the "ServerLayout" sections, or by using the
"-xinerama" command-line argument to /usr/bin/Xorg. I've read that the
NVIDIA driver forces it on or something.

So our bug is probably not this one, would you agree? I couldn't find a
report for our bug.

2010-11-30 Thread martinux
Hello,

Any chances to have this bug fix in released version ?
This bug is present in 10.04 LTS and 10.10 versions and affect Nikon users (at
least those having D90 and D5000).
In my case it takes about one hour to upload 100 photos from my D90. I can't
live with that as I am doing about 500 shots a weeks.

[Bug 660972] Re: eject does not unmount cdrom or dvdrom if ejecting by the hardware button

2010-11-30 Thread go4linux
I have the same problem on a Dell Precision M4500. It seems to be caused by the
fact that no udev events are triggered if the DVD is ejected with the button
when the drive is mounted. Unmounting the DVD after it has been ejected
triggers the event. In the same way, just unmonting without ejecting the CD
does nothing, but ejecting after unmounting triggers an event.
I think this problem is for the udev package. It should also be the same as
bugs #588783 and #625495.

I'm seeing the same problem as Jérôme and Mauro [from bug 650539]. I
have exactly one NVIDIA display adapter, using the proprietary driver
(version 173 and "current" both exhibit the problem), and the adapter is
attached to exactly one monitor. Emacs, rxvt, VLC, and xawtv each crash

I ran through half of the demos in the "qtdemo" package and none crashed
the server. (I don't have all the KDE infrastructure installed, so I
didn't test that.) So it does not seem to be related to bug 650539. The
server does *not* crash when using the free-software NVIDIA driver.

I have not been able to disable the Xinerama extension either by putting
'Option "Xinerama" "0"' in the "ServerLayout" sections, or by using the
"-xinerama" command-line argument to /usr/bin/Xorg. I've read that the
NVIDIA driver forces it on or something.

Also, "ubuntu-bug" accused my of installing NVIDIA drivers manually from
nvidia.com. I did not.

[Bug 610898] Re: grub-pc upgrade renders computer unbootable when Wubi is installed to partition other than Windows

2010-11-30 Thread bcbc
The permanent fix to the grub problem for 10.04.1 installs on the same
partition as windows is described here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10180622&postcount=13

It's the same for 10.10 wubi installs to the same partition described in
bug 653134.

This is a manual workaround that allows the system to automatically
update grub.cfg as required, but without continually breaking. The real
solution requires a change to grub-pc install hooks that are beyond the
scope of my capabilities.

I do not like doing a fresh install to fix issues.

Any more ideas anyone?

Re: [Bug 459647] Re: Cannot change mouse cursor theme when compiz is enabled

2010-11-30 Thread Serrano Pereira
Yep, I'm getting the exact same thing as Taylor mentioned. Switching
cursor theme while Emerald is enabled doesn't work. Switching cursor
theme while GTK Window Decorator is enabled works fine, though not
perfect. The main pointer changes as expected, but the resize pointer
doesn't. I have to switch to Emerald and then back to GTK to get all
cursors right.

[Bug 662711] Re: NFS user/group mapping not working in 10.10

2010-11-30 Thread Klaus Reichl
We have the problem, that the nfs-server is externally hosted and NFS
entries are published via automounter maps.

Running now 10.10 on an NFS client we have the situation:

* mount uses NFS4 per default
* autmounter maps don't give something like vers=3
=> nfs stuff is mounted nobody/nogroup

The only solution I tested successfully so far is to
manually mount the things with:
   mount ... vers=3 ...

Another solution, I'm thinking about is to replace
/sbin/mount.nfs which is now /sbin/mount.nfs4 really
with an version mount version 3 per default.
But that's ugly!

Is there something I miss here? Can I configure a default for mount?

Thanx for info
Klaus

[Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2010-11-30 Thread Antonio J. de Oliveira
Hello all

@mantas, thanks for the info, I republished all binaries aith all
unneeded symbols removed. You may very easily do this on your own files
with Linux stripper, the equivelent of the windoze I was talking about:

strip --strip-unneeded sis671_drv.so

I didn't do any .deb on purpose my system requires that the drivers are
in a sub-directory of the standard folder, have to check why:

/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/old_sis

the drivers work with 1280x800 since the beginning, that's what I got to
test those, only lately I tried the patched tpurch code (I think) that I
knew worked with the 1366x768 display.

@martin, I will make the code public and warn you, before the end of the
week.

Chers

Antonio

[Bug 596327] Re: Digikam imports images taken with Nikon Cameras extremely slow, takes a large amount of time processing exif data

2010-11-30 Thread Piotr Kęplicz
I'd suggest not to wait for an official fix, which is expected in April,
2011, but to fix it yourself.

My solution:
- grab libexiv2-9 and libexiv2-dev from Debian testing (current version is
0.20-2) and install them,
- get source packages for kdegraphics and rebuild them,
- install the rebuild libkexiv2-8 package (no need to update the other ones),
- you might want to mark this package "hold" in order to prevent it from being
updated, at least until it gets fixed in Ubuntu.

[Bug 683039] [NEW] toggling fullscreen moves window offscreen

2010-11-30 Thread B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When toggling a window between windowed and fullscreen mode (Like vlc or
totem), when it comes out of fullscreen mode, the window is moved past
the top left corner of the screen so it is a little bit offscreen.

If the window is toggled fullscreen again, when it comes out of
fullscreen it moves up a little more. Repeating this makes it move
completely off the screen.

I'm using the latest git branch on ubuntu 10.10 (built with the soreau
scripts) with nvidia drivers. I also have a multi-monitor setup, but
was told in irc that this happens on single-monitor setups too.

[Bug 683042] [NEW] Unused keyboard layout re-added every log-in

2010-11-30 Thread Gavin Panella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Every time I log-in, the United Kingdom Macintosh keyboard layout has
been re-added to my keyboard settings. This causes the layout indicator
to appear in the panel. If I remove the Macintosh layout, the indicator
disappears, but returns when I next log-in.

This is unexpected behaviour, but is not preventing me from using the
machine in any way.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: gnome-control-center 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu2
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-23.41-generic 2.6.35.7

[Bug 664190] Re: 2.6.35 kernel regression in video / High CPU Xorg on Resume

2010-11-30 Thread James Deibele
I have the same problem with 2.6.37-7 (natty).

I will have Xorg spike at 17% or 50% or more of CPU when moving mouse.
There I just hit 34%. And 37%.

Only reliable way to fix is to reboot.

I only have pidgin and chromium (daily) running.
