I'm sorry for not reporting this before, i'm on 10.04 too and a from a few
months age i have been able to solve this by using a 2.6.35 kernel from the
Kernel PPA.

uname -r is:

2.6.35-15-generic

Whenever i get back to the official Ubuntu kernel, i get back to the same
(too old i must say) issues.
