[Bug 671664] Re: slow computer after upgrade

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. In order to help us
understanding any of the issues you describe we would need some more
details, and in particular:

1. Which version of ubuntu did you upgrade from (it appears you are
running 8.04).

2. I would recommend for you to clean up your installation packages by
running in the terminal the following command:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

3. If you are still running 8.04, I would strongly recommend, after you
perform step 1 and 2, to upgrade to at least 10.04 (which is a long term
release) or 10.10.

I am going to set the status of this bug as incomplete. Feel free to
reopen the bug (by setting the status to "New") once you have the
information requested.

2010-11-06 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello Ernest, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better.

There seems to be a directory missing:

S'està configurant libc6-i686 (2.9-4ubuntu6.3) ...

S'està configurant mysql-server-5.0 (5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu10.5) ...

/var/run/mysqld must exist for mysqld to start properly.

Please try to create that directory as root and then re-attempt your
update.

sudo mkdir /var/run/mysqld

If you are not using the mysql server package, you may also want to
remove it with

sudo apt-get remove mysql-server

Also, Ubuntu 9.04 has reached its "End of Life" , and will not be
receiving updates (security or otherwise) anymore. We highly recommend
that you upgrade to 9.10 or later ASAP!

2010-11-06 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello Erik, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better!

It would appear that your passwd file was locked for some reason:

useradd: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later.
adduser: `/usr/sbin/useradd -d /var/run/xrdp -g xrdp -s /bin/false -u 117 xrdp'
returned error code 1. Exiting.

You may want to check to see if there are currently running programs
that have it locked with

fuser -v /etc/passwd

This should show any processes with /etc/passwd opened and/or locked.

It may also be easier to reboot, and then attempt the update again.

Closing as Invalid.

[Bug 671021] Re: kill -9 kvm crashes ssh daemon

2010-11-06 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Jeff, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and help
us make Ubuntu better.

I just tried to reproduce this, albeit running a Linux vm since I don't
have win2k3. kill -9 on the kvm process just resulted in kvm's death,
but my ssh session worked fine.

I used these steps:

qemu-img create -f hardy.img 20G
kvm --name hardy -m 384 -hda hardy.img -cdrom isos/hardy-mini.iso -nographic
kill -9 pidof kvm

Nothing crashes.

Can you look in /var/log/auth.log and see if sshd prints any messages
before dying?

(so far :-):
Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
Open this file for editing:
Code: gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Insert this line at the bottom:
Code: options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
Save. Close. Reboot.

Check your levels in alsamixer.
Code: alsamixer
Press to select the correct soundcard.
Press to show playback levels. selects capture levels [or use ]
Use the left/right arrow keys to select and up/down arrow keys to change
levels. to mute/unmute.
Go to "System ->Preferences ->Sound" and make sure the correct soundcard is
default and adjust your profile on the hardware tab.
On the output tab choose the correct device.

[Bug 666601] Re: Xorg does not dump core (via file nor Apport) on crash

2010-11-06 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Thanks for that, Gustavo. I would just add two things to your
instructions:

1. "ulimit -c unlimited" at some point, so that ulimit doesn't prevent a
core file from being generated;

2. Remember to specify the display, e.g. "DISPLAY=:0 gnome-session" :-)

Even with all that, if Apport is enabled, you don't get a core dump. The
only way you get a core is if Apport is disabled (i.e. core_pattern
specifies a file instead of a pipe). Very odd.

I finally got a core, force-fed it after-the-fact into Apport, and got
bug #671293.

[Bug 671754] [NEW] Hard to find available software (users and groups)

2010-11-06 Thread Osmo Laitinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Applications doesn't show all applications and that might be fine if it
is performance related (see #660979).

However, in this particular case I wanted to add new users.

1. Went to "All applications", but apparently it doesn't show all
applications, but just first 60 (10 rows and 6 colums), last one being
"Text editor".

2. Went to system view: only 36 applications visible (6x6), Ubuntu One
being last one

3. Went back to "All applications" and since I happened to know what I
want to find I typed "u" to search bar, but "User and Groups" didn't
appear. What about "a" (for adding user) and voila: it was there.

4. Went back to system and this time I was able to find users and groups
with letter "u".

[Bug 671494] Re: Computer Freezes since Updates

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thank you for your report. It would greatly help if you could report
which version of Ubuntu you are running. Also it would be great if you
could provide a list of packages that were included in the update:

Open synaptic (Package manager) under and System->Administration)
Select the menu: File->history,
find the most recent update that seems to have issues
copy and paste here the list of packages that were installed.

In addition, when ubuntu is running (but without any program open), open
the System Monitor from the main menu (System->Administration). Select
the tab processes. Order the list by the process running the highest %
CPU (by pushing % CPU). Report here the processes with the highest CPU
%.

I am going to set the status of this bug as incomplete. Feel free to
reopen it or report back once you have the required information.

Thanks.

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The ubuntu community
supports only packages that are in the official repository. Any other
version (included any manually compiled from upstream) are not
supported. I recommend to file the bug upstream to the compiz

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Re: [Bug 671494] Re: Computer Freezes since Updates

2010-11-06 Thread Shawn A Whitbeck
I've already posted all this crap in the ask a question thing. I know
nothing about computers, and don't know how to do all this. When I went
to the HISTORY area, it doesn't show anything. The updated were done 3
days ago now. And this computer is getting slower and slower and
freezing more and more daily. I'm ready to take a hammer to it. How do
you uninstall all the updates that were done? Is there a way? Or is
there a way to roll it back to another day like Windows did. It's sad, I
had less issues with Windows, and I hated them.

2010-11-06 Thread Jack Bauer
I've noticed this Kensington USB mouse issue due to the fact of being
part of "vboxusers" group. So, anyone could confirm that they are using
VirtualBox software and have included their users to vboxusers group to
enable USB on guests?.

In addition to Shotwell, this problem appears on Rhythmbox so they
possibly are in conflict whit virtual USB interface of Virtual Box.

Confirmation please.

This happens because the package tries to call alsactl init, and the
config file expects the installed kernel to have both kernel patches
posted at this bug, what is not the case when giving apt-get upgrade
(the kernel update went on-line at the same time as the package update).

To fix this you basically need to call alsactl init only if the user
already has the proper kernel installed and etc.

[Bug 637947] Re: no sound devices on current ES2.0 boards

2010-11-06 Thread Ricardo Salveti
Following the kernel commit http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu
/ubuntu-
maverick.git;a=commitdiff;h=5469d37bd56cbe8b604e83a8dc769984de5e7437;hp=6b8a624f7c72ac07c28f52371839792d69940c5b
you can identify if you're at the proper kernel by probing the driver's
name or the long name.

The attached patch check for the correct long name before calling
alsactl init.

This at least fixes the apt-get upgrade problem.

worked immediately. So, either it is a rare first time bug or I have
made a mistake at some point. Anyway, the main problem stays.

[Bug 671768] [NEW] Conky should use override-redirect

2010-11-06 Thread Sam "SmSpillaz" Spilsbury
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: conky

Conky does all kinds of strange things to it's window, like changing
it's type, placing itself, not accepting input etc etc etc.

This all confuses EWMH compliant window managers, and thus conky should
be override-redirect so that the window manager doesn't fight with it.

Thorsten,

I tried your workaround, but was still unable to upgrade to 10.10. I
keep getting a terminal and a message that the nvidia driver cannot be
found. I tried several times, but no luck.

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2010-11-06 Thread malclocke
Bug appears to be due to the GUI representing the wrong default value.
If there is no gconf key set for /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds the
'System -> Administration -> Login Screen' shows 'Play Login Sound'
unchecked, but gconf reports true for the value.

To reproduce:

  # Unset the config key
  $ sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --unset /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds

  # gconf will now report true by default
  $ sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds
  true

  # However the call used by the ubuntu patched GDM will return 'no value'
  $ sudo gconftool-2 --direct -g /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds
--config-source=xml:readwrite:/var/lib/gdm/.gconf
  No value set for `/desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds'

  # Opening the 'System -> Administration -> Login Screen' will show 'Play
Login Sound' as false

The file debian/patches/09_gdmserver_gconf_settings.patch contains the
erroneous code, I'm afraid I don't really understand well enough what's
going on there to provide a patch. I suspect that it's the default fall
through value of false from gdm_settings_get_bool_gconf_value()

As a quick fix for users, simply checking and then unchecking the 'Play
Login Sound' checkbox in the GUI will explicitly set the value to false,
and the login drum sound should be disabled.

[Bug 643822] Re: System freezes unless mouse/keyboard constantly used

2010-11-06 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
I confirm this problem on an ASUS Notebook. It behaves exactly as described in
#1. Something stops basically all processing until the mouse is moved or any
key hit. I find myself hitting "Shift" constantly just to keep things going.
I confirm that it's very unspecific and seems to affect everything. It has a
severe impact on the general usability of the computer.
The problem appeared after upgrade to Maverick. It was never present before.

[Bug 537640] Re: [RV530] Video problem: External monitor wavy, unreadable. ati radeon [Needs pll quirk]

2010-11-06 Thread cherep
I have the same problem on my Lenovo z360 running Maverick. Any picture is
flickering on an external monitor. However my z360 is with nVidia Optimus
Technology, therefore I have:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 310M] (rev
a2)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 12)

How to understand which controller is actually used? Does this bag
affect only ATI controllers?

[Bug 418242] Re: Incorrect call to output plugins (with persistent error message) on copy

2010-11-06 Thread Alex Valavanis
Netbeans appears to trigger the same problem. See duplicate bug #645909

* Start Netbeans and Inkscape
* Draw something (anything) in Inkscape
* Copy and paste the shape in Inkscape
* Switch focus from Inkscape to Netbeans and back again
>> Uniconvertor crash dialog appears

** Description changed:

UPDATE: After further investigation it turned out to be a problem related to
the copy operation, in combination with a totally unrelated running Java
program (FreeRapid).
Reading some followups and other bug reports, it seems to be caused by the
new clipboard management system (introduced as a fix for the bug #170185), as
reported in bug #421597

So far these applications are known to randomly trigger an input/output
extension (on linux):
  - FreeRapid Downloader
  - jDownloader
  - xfce4-clipman-plugin 1.1.3
+ - Netbeans

  -

  The original report was this:
I'm getting this error when I try to edit a text object created previously
with a font that's not available in this system.
It looks like Inkscape has problems to resolve the font substitution and
displays the error message in a popup window that keeps appearing again and
again, leaving no other remedy than closing inkscape and reopening it.

  The error message is attached.
