Yes, indeed.

Although I can also the advantage of such a "binary kernel plugin" for
the hardware vendors (no need for giving out the source code of their
drivers which might be part of the huge effort they did when creating
the product), I prefer the law of freedom because of the possible
threats. If the code is open source, it can be investigated and
checked - at least by those who care most about the OS sources.

Yes, they should.

As far as I noticed, Microsoft did not bother in most cases of the
hardware drivers. Manufacturers of hardware always needed to do that
on their own. For Linux there is a whole community that would like to
help building the driver together with the manufacturer but:
Supporting Linux anyway needs to deal with an additional OS even if
they get helped. For many this is just a matter of cost and so they
don't care about Linux.

What everybody can do: Just don't buy hardware that is not Linux
compatible - even if you are not planning yet to run Linux on it. It
might happen sooner as you think.

Example: I had 2 cases where people were buying new laptops with
Windows 7 on it and apart from being overwhelmed with the changes in 7
(they used XP before) they missed their very old MS Office 97
Professional (they still used that because they never needed more. But
the MSO 97 does not run smoothly any more (and BTW already does a lot
of wrong stuff on installation by mixing up folders). They didn't
consider buying a new MS Office license in their budget. Finally I
wiped their machines (another 2 Windows machines in the Microsoft
statistic that are ghosts) and put Ubuntu on it. However, I struggled
a little with the shitty Hardware - because they did not care about it
(assuming everything is fine as Windows 7 runs preinstalled - even if
on my net the Windows 7 - maybe only on that hardware - wasn't either
able to connect to my WPA2 only WLAN). So they planned to use Windows
- for about 2 weeks or so. They should have considered hardware
compatibility...

[Bug 599169] Re: evince cbz support is broken on evince-2.30.3-0ubuntu1

2010-07-06 Thread Juanjo Marín
#15

about cb7 files, right now Ubuntu only opens these files with 7zr (it
comes with the 7zip package). In order to open with the 7zip-full
package, you need to add

  /usr/bin/7z ixr,
  /usr/lib/p7zip/7z ixr,
  /usr/bin/7za ixr,
  /usr/lib/p7zip/7za ixr,

in /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/evince (well, only 7za is enough) as in
the previous comments.

By no, I don't know why thumbnaling cb7 files fails, I will take a look
when I have more time

I should get some good testing in this week. When I've tested more I
will follow through with the merge proposal.

[Bug 338217] Re: scim-bridge crashed with SIGSEGV in scim::Module::unload() - fixed by "rm -Rf ~/.scim/"

2010-07-06 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Guys, do as you please. You're not doing Ubuntu a favor by withholding
this documentation, that's for sure. Having it documented is better
than the current situation. Who knows, it's quite well possible this
problem was introduced by one of Ubuntu's ill-guided patches in the
past. FWIW, I don't get this kind of report from Debian users.

As Debian maintainer of the scim package and part of the upstream team,
you may as well stop second-guessing my judgment about upstream's
activities. We're all just there to keep the project limping along, I
don't see any real development work for years.

If you have a better solution, we'd be all ears, but don't expect
upstream to do original dev work for you. By doing so and withholding
an incremental improvement from your user base you are doing them a
disservice.

[Bug 329106] Re: upgrading to Jaunty renamed eth0 to eth1

2010-07-06 Thread David Stratton
FWIW this behaviour is still present in Ubuntu 10.04.

I am using Ubuntu in Virtual Box where it is all too easy to change MAC
addresses.

The certain fix, with a single card, is to replace the entire contents
of /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (in effect the history of
all cards seen) with the single, "catch all" rule:

 SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", NAME="eth0"

The single interface, regardless of type or MAC address is then named
eth0

I tried multiple interfaces with similar lines (NAME= eth1, eth2 etc)
but the order in which rules are processed (or interfaces detected?)
does not appear predictable. It was quite common to see interfaces
named, for example, "eth1_renamed"

[Bug 602152] [NEW] Ubuntu Software Center fails and swallows error message

2010-07-06 Thread Ben McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I ran the following command as suggested on
http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html:
sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_lucid.list -O
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list

This created a file which was not readable:
$ ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
-rw-r- 1 root root 43 May 1 09:42 playonlinux.list

As a result the "Ubuntu Software Center" was entirely broken and it told
me I had 0 packages installed. It should be able to deal with this or
give me a reasonable error message. This caused me needless amounts of
frustration.

When I finally launched synpatic from the command line it was clear what was
going on:
E: Opening /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list - ifstream::ifstream (13:
Permission denied)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

[Bug 601859] Re: gparted with dmraid causes incorrect NTFS formatting via mkfs.ntfs

2010-07-06 Thread Rich
Hi,

I dug out an old SiL (3112?)PCI RAID adapter last night, hooked both
drives up as before, created a new raid set - booted into Ubuntu 10.04
live

I used fdisk and mkfs.ntfs manually and got the exact same problem as on
the Intel controller, the NTFS filesystem is being created oddly and
grub4dos etc doesn't recognise it as NTFS. Then booting into a Windows
PE disk and using a formatting program rendered a 'normal' NTFS format.

[Bug 599785] Re: The Gimp's description is too confusing

2010-07-06 Thread Andrew
Maybe use some stuff from the GIMP website:
http://www.gimp.org/about/introduction.htm ie.

GIMP lets you draw, paint, edit images, and much more! GIMP includes the
functionality and plug-ins of other famous image editing and processing
programs.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an
expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing
system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter. Its
inbuilt scripting interface mean even the most complex of operations are
possible.

[Bug 602145] Re: glom sqlite support

2010-07-06 Thread Murray Cumming
No, I (the Glom upstream maintainer) really don't want this experimental
feature to be enabled in regular builds. However, there _should_ be a
separate build that can use sqlite.

The reasons are
a) It complicates the UI with an option that the regular user has no interest
in. The backend implementation is of no interest to the target users.
b) It complicates the maintenance. We would then have to test with two backends
and solve bugs that only exist in sqlite. We have enough problems without that.
c) There is at least one known bug with the sqlite backend:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600874
d) sqlite does not have all the functionality we want, such as network sharing
and users/groups access control.

Note that all Glom builds can _use_ sqlite-based .glom files, but only a
special build of Glom could _create_ a sqlite-based .glom file.

[Bug 601125] Re: code maintainability, modularity and readability issues

2010-07-06 Thread Stuart R Balfour
Yes. I understand. "Debian" appears to be the nominal owner of the package,
though no one at debian or anywhere else is maintaining it. In such
circumstances,
Ubuntu release teams sometimes elect to fix and distribute their own packages.
No work has been done on this package since at least 2008, and that's an
eternity.

I don't believe my changes, properly conditionalized, introduce portability
changes.
Many compilers and/or implementation libraries have functions to convert among
endian byte orders, or at least to fetch serially ordered bytes in multiples of
2,4 or 8
from byte streams and assemble them into words and double words. That's the
only
change I identify as having portability implications. This package is
fundamentally a GNU/
C/Linux program. To whatever extent an upgrade would enable some subset of the
existing user base to enjoy increased feature content, reliability and
currectness,
that is a plus. Right now, this package is dead.

[Bug 567016] Re: Wireless won't work on Lenovo Thinkpad T510

2010-07-06 Thread Shane
Just to try to speed things up to make it go into that infinite loop of
non-connectingness, i decided to transfer 2.9GB of data from my desktop
computer to my laptop, and low and behold something so incredibly
obvious appears. Right at about 1:50 is where i started the file
transfer. Want to guess when it completed? I find it so strange that
even outside of those "message repeated" errors, i could set my watch
fairly accurately to these debug messages (well, here and there they
seem to miss a minute, but still). Granted, i don't loose connection
from services (my router, however, is complaining in it's logs) at those
times (haven't had a chance to time "talking glitches" with skype yet,
but at this point i doubt i have to). If only i knew my way around those
drivers and wireless networking hardware, i'd fix the problem myself,
however I don't.

While typing this, my connection went out again. I found that before
finishing this, though, it inevitably reconnected. So i updated the file
accordingly while typing. Anyway, if not all these messages correspond
to a single issue, solving them so that they disappear would help the
issues come into light more clearly. I originally had a theory written
here on what the problem was, but once i got enough data, i realized
that connecting all these error messages was a stretch. A new theory,
though:

There's a 6 element queue of something called "TX." The driver gets
"stuck" whenever it runs out of TX (slowly, but progressively), however
it can't free TX because something (that it can't sacrifice because data
would end up permanently lost, despite it supposedly not being lost) is
using that 6th slot. Now, it'll have a little success, but inevitably
because this queue's usage grows and can't be freed at the rate in which
it gets used up, it inevitably gets truly stuck and connection is lost
and cannot be re-established. Though, my guess is that i'm actually
totally wrong, because i'm just making a wild guess on the data, but if
all else fails, it's something to go on, because solving any of these
messages could clear them up enough to see the real problem.

The only thing i really can't explain is that i did have one good night
where nothing happened in syslog for about 8 hours or why these messages
appear so consistently.

percentage of it is the realtek device. I started the log where i felt the

[Bug 602162] [NEW] libssh2 isn't multithread safe

2010-07-06 Thread Tony McConnell
Public bug reported:

Recently had the pleasure of writing an application that uses the
libssh2 library; the app uses lots of threads - the shipped version of
libssh2 in 10.04 crashes liberally.

I had to download 1.2.4 and use that; fine, but that crashes
occasionally too.

It seems that the crashes have gone away with 1.2.6, the version being
shipped with meercat.

Since I can't change our operating system again (moving from RHEL to
Ubuntu 10.04 was a bit of an, erm, battle), and it would be helpful to
have libssh2 installed as a standard package - would it be possible to
replace 1.2.2 with 1.2.6 in lucid-updates?

[Bug 598035] Re: Plymouth does not work

2010-07-06 Thread Steve Langasek
If you add 'plymouth:debug=file:/var/log/plymouth-debug.log' to your
boot options, you should get a file containing debug info. The
plymouth-splash error probably shows up in /var/log/boot.log as well,
actually.

It's strange that plymouth-splash should fail this way, since all it
does is call 'plymouth show-splash' which should return almost
immediately.

[Bug 599169] Re: evince cbz support is broken on evince-2.30.3-0ubuntu1

2010-07-06 Thread Sokak
Juanjo, thank you very much for your hints!

Im stuffing these lines right now, and indeed i will never be enough
thankful to you :)

At first, i was scared to peep into launchpad, it just looked too techy
to me, but i had just to lurk a bit to see what good and hard work is
going on here, and that once you learn to get your hands dirt in the
shell, it itsnt too bad :D (next one wll be to learn how to compile, but
im going in sort of the right direction)

I think i will open a little blog to link all those helpful hints i
discovered here: looks like google cant manage to pop out such solutions
without flooding with garbage and double links on the result pages :/

Also i am italian, and sometimes i find difficult to have a bingo
without googling a few to narrow down the search...

Ill try to learn more and help other people too, Cheers :)

[Bug 595650] Re: After the last updates HP printer stopped working

2010-07-06 Thread locutus
I use a HP Laserjet 1010 and cannot print anymore since the update done
on 3. July 2010.

What does not work
- printing in general. Error message: "maybe not connected"
- test print initiated from notebook

What works:
- printer is recognized automatically
- test print initiated from button on printer itself
- printing with same hardware/cabling but run with old live-CD

I hope a future update will cure this because the hints included above
are not implementable for me as a normal user. As much as I can
copy&paste into terminal I have no clue what to do if step details are
missing (e.g. #36: how to "substitute variant"). Nevertheless THANKS A
LOT to all supporting Ubuntu. This is great!

The killall command earlier is not supposed to kill Banshee -- it's
supposed to make Banshee dump out a whole bunch of stack traces onto the
terminal, which it did. Could you try installing the "banshee-dbg"
package and attempting those steps again, please? That would result in a
more useful stack trace (with file names and line numbers, etc) to
accelerate debugging.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve

The upgrade log shows:

Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... /usr/sbin/update-grub: line 1516:

Line 1516 consists of the simple command "cat $menu.new > $menu".

Do you have /boot mounted root only? I don't know why this would give

[Bug 350075] Re: Totem does not parse .asx file correctly

2010-07-06 Thread Walter Cheuk
In 10.10 alpha 2 (with most-recent updates, Totem 2.30.2), the problem
is still there. Totem still does not skill the start time parameter; the
only good news is that now I can scroll the time bar so I don't have to
wait for the time to elapse.

BTW, the option to install the required codec is gone now. Now it says
that there is no codec for the "Microsoft Media Server (MMS)" used in
the .asx file. I have to install gstreamer-plugins-bad manually, only
after that opening the same .asx file in question prompts me to install
gstreamer-plugins-ugly and gstreamer-ffmpeg, and the file can be played.

[Bug 601370] Re: unable to change scaling mode (thinkpad t410, lucid, intel arrandale graphics)

2010-07-06 Thread madbiologist
This is almost certainly
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18033

This has been fixed upstream in kernel 2.6.35-rc4. From the changelog:

commit dd1ea37d9257bdf118693235dc74003901c55204
Author: Jesse Barnes
Date: Thu Jun 24 11:05:10 2010 -0700

drm/i915: change default panel fitting mode to preserve aspect ratio

We did this a long time ago in the DDX driver, but now this fix belongs
in the kernel.

Preserving the aspect ratio is a nicer default.

Fixes https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18033.

2010-07-06 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok; that's definitely a bug then, but a very puzzling one. Your report
says that the system was installed initially as a 10.04 LTS system, and
10.04 LTS doesn't even include lilo as a bootloader option by default -
you have to download it from the network during install to use it at
all. Could you attach the contents of /var/log/installer for this
system?

[Bug 589940] Re: [arrandale] maverick alpha 1 live doesn't display desktop

2010-07-06 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Good that the display now lights up. If I understand you correctly you
have a working computer if you use an external mouse and keyboard. The
mouse/keyboard problem is probably unrelated to the original problem. It
may be related to using a daily build (it is possible that the mainline
build of -rc4 is better) or that there are some out-of-tree drivers in
the Ubuntu kernel that is not in the mainline kernel. Anyway, the
Maverick kernel will be rebased to include all patches from 2.6.35-rc4
soon. At that point this bug should be fixed in Ubuntu. You can see when
the ubuntu kernel was last updated at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux .

If the next Ubuntu Maverick kernel breaks your keyboard and trackpad,
please file a new bug report at that point.

[Bug 493157] Re: RealPlayer Meta (.ram) files are not played correctly

2010-07-06 Thread Walter Cheuk
In 10.10 alpha 2 (with most-recent updates, Totem 2.30.2), the problems just
remain the same:
1. The start time parameter is not parsed.
2. The time bar is not scrollable, together with point 1, one have to wait for
the leading start time to elapse to start watching the actual show (the time
bar is scrollable while playing .asx file now, as I reported in bug #350075)
3. Cannot install required codec on double-clicking. The file can only be
played after install codecs for .asx file.
4. The icon of the file does not show it is a media file, though
double-clicking it will open it in Totem.

[Bug 567016] Re: Wireless won't work on Lenovo Thinkpad T510

2010-07-06 Thread Brian Candler
> Right at about 1:50 is where i started the file transfer. Want to
guess when it completed?

Not really, can you explain what you saw? How long did the transfer
take, or before it got interrupted?

Possible side issue, but have you tried disabling screen blanking (xset
s 0) and disabling all other power management which might kick in N
minutes after you last touched the machine? Also, you could try removing
the battery and running just on mains, so that you don't get any ACPI
events like "battery fully charged". My Thinkpad X100e has strange
lockups in these circumstances.

[Off-topic]

More likely, they care about their Windows customers but not those who
replace Windows with Linux, since the product was never advertised as
working with Linux in the first place. This makes buying a laptop for
Linux a risky business.

If you want a laptop with a Unix-based O/S which works out of the box,
probably your best bet is a Macbook - but you pay a large premium for
that.

I notice Dell still have an Ubuntu page:
http://www.dell.co.uk/ubuntu
but AFAICS that now links to a list of laptops with Windows and no mention of
Ubuntu.

Otherwise, if the wireless is a miniPCI card, you can replace it with
one with better driver support.

[Bug 585651] Re: Cannot install on eDP laptops such as HP Elitebook 2540p or 8440p

2010-07-06 Thread madbiologist
commit fe27d53e5c597ee5ba5d72a29d517091f244e974
Author: Dave Airlie
Date: Wed Jun 30 11:46:17 2010 +1000

i915: fix ironlake edp panel setup (v4)

The eDP spec claims a 20% overhead for the 8:10 encoding scheme used
on the wire. Take this into account when picking the lane/clock speed
for the panel.

v3: some panels are out of spec, try our best to deal with them, don't
refuse modes on eDP panels, and try the largest allowed settings if
all else fails on eDP.
v4: fix stupid typo, forgot to git add before amending.

Fixes several reports in bugzilla:

2010-07-06 Thread Sam L.
I would say that is a good idea but to perhaps avoid technical terms? Those
that need Something like "GIMP is an image manipulation program that has
been designed to be extensible to accomplish just about anything. Draw,
paint, edit images, and much more!".

[Bug 599785] Re: The Gimp's description is too confusing

2010-07-06 Thread Sam L.
I would say that is a good idea but to perhaps avoid technical terms
altogether to avoid scaring people off? Those that need the complex
features will know they're available. Something like "GIMP is an image
manipulation program that has been designed to be extensible to
accomplish just about anything. With GiMP, draw, paint, edit images, and
much more!".
