If the code is open source, it can be investigated and checked - at least by those who care most about the OS sources. > The most optimal solution would be if hardware manufacturers finally realised > how to properly cooperate with free software community and either started > writing BSD/GPL/MIT/whatever code themselves and submitting it for inclusion > in the next release of the component they wish to support or at least > providing complete NDA-free documentation and paying some of that component's > developers to write that code for them (because documentation availability > alone unfortunately doesn't guarantee someone's really gonna bother). Yes, they should. As far as I noticed, Microsoft did not bother in most cases of the hardware drivers. Manufacturers of hardware always needed to do that on their own. For Linux there is a whole community that would like to help building the driver together with the manufacturer but: Supporting Linux anyway needs to deal with an additional OS even if they get helped. For many this is just a matter of cost and so they don't care about Linux. What everybody can do: Just don't buy hardware that is not Linux compatible - even if you are not planning yet to run Linux on it. It might happen sooner as you think. Example: I had 2 cases where people were buying new laptops with Windows 7 on it and apart from being overwhelmed with the changes in 7 (they used XP before) they missed their very old MS Office 97 Professional (they still used that because they never needed more. But the MSO 97 does not run smoothly any more (and BTW already does a lot of wrong stuff on installation by mixing up folders). They didn't consider buying a new MS Office license in their budget. Finally I wiped their machines (another 2 Windows machines in the Microsoft statistic that are ghosts) and put Ubuntu on it. However, I struggled a little with the shitty Hardware - because they did not care about it (assuming everything is fine as Windows 7 runs preinstalled - even if on my net the Windows 7 - maybe only on that hardware - wasn't either able to connect to my WPA2 only WLAN). So they planned to use Windows - for about 2 weeks or so. They should have considered hardware compatibility... -- Martin Wildam -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Guys, do as you please. You're not doing Ubuntu a favor by withholding this documentation, that's for sure. Having it documented is better than the current situation. Who knows, it's quite well possible this problem was introduced by one of Ubuntu's ill-guided patches in the past. FWIW, I don't get this kind of report from Debian users. As Debian maintainer of the scim package and part of the upstream team, you may as well stop second-guessing my judgment about upstream's activities. We're all just there to keep the project limping along, I don't see any real development work for years. If you have a better solution, we'd be all ears, but don't expect upstream to do original dev work for you. By doing so and withholding an incremental improvement from your user base you are doing them a disservice. -- scim-bridge crashed with SIGSEGV in scim::Module::unload() - fixed by "rm -Rf ~/.scim/" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/338217 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 329106] Re: upgrading to Jaunty renamed eth0 to eth1
FWIW this behaviour is still present in Ubuntu 10.04. I am using Ubuntu in Virtual Box where it is all too easy to change MAC addresses. The certain fix, with a single card, is to replace the entire contents of /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (in effect the history of all cards seen) with the single, "catch all" rule: SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", NAME="eth0" The single interface, regardless of type or MAC address is then named eth0 I tried multiple interfaces with similar lines (NAME= eth1, eth2 etc) but the order in which rules are processed (or interfaces detected?) does not appear predictable. [Bug 602145] Re: glom sqlite support
No, I (the Glom upstream maintainer) really don't want this experimental feature to be enabled in regular builds. However, there _should_ be a separate build that can use sqlite. The reasons are a) It complicates the UI with an option that the regular user has no interest in. The backend implementation is of no interest to the target users. b) It complicates the maintenance. We would then have to test with two backends and solve bugs that only exist in sqlite. We have enough problems without that. c) There is at least one known bug with the sqlite backend: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600874 d) sqlite does not have all the functionality we want, such as network sharing and users/groups access control. Note that all Glom builds can _use_ sqlite-based .glom files, but only a special build of Glom could _create_ a sqlite-based .glom file. ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #600874 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600874 -- glom sqlite support https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/602145 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 601125] Re: code maintainability, modularity and readability issues
Yes. I understand. "Debian" appears to be the nominal owner of the package, though no one at debian or anywhere else is maintaining it. In such circumstances, Ubuntu release teams sometimes elect to fix and distribute their own packages. No work has been done on this package since at least 2008, and that's an eternity. I don't believe my changes, properly conditionalized, introduce portability changes. Many compilers and/or implementation libraries have functions to convert among endian byte orders, or at least to fetch serially ordered bytes in multiples of 2,4 or 8 from byte streams and assemble them into words and double words. That's the only change I identify as having portability implications. This package is fundamentally a GNU/ C/Linux program. To whatever extent an upgrade would enable some subset of the existing user base to enjoy increased feature content, reliability and currectness, that is a plus. [Bug 567016] Re: Wireless won't work on Lenovo Thinkpad T510
Just to try to speed things up to make it go into that infinite loop of non-connectingness, i decided to transfer 2.9GB of data from my desktop computer to my laptop, and low and behold something so incredibly obvious appears. Right at about 1:50 is where i started the file transfer. Want to guess when it completed? I find it so strange that even outside of those "message repeated" errors, i could set my watch fairly accurately to these debug messages (well, here and there they seem to miss a minute, but still). Granted, i don't loose connection from services (my router, however, is complaining in it's logs) at those times (haven't had a chance to time "talking glitches" with skype yet, but at this point i doubt i have to). If only i knew my way around those drivers and wireless networking hardware, i'd fix the problem myself, however I don't. While typing this, my connection went out again. I found that before finishing this, though, it inevitably reconnected. So i updated the file accordingly while typing. Anyway, if not all these messages correspond to a single issue, solving them so that they disappear would help the issues come into light more clearly. I originally had a theory written here on what the problem was, but once i got enough data, i realized that connecting all these error messages was a stretch. A new theory, though: There's a 6 element queue of something called "TX." The driver gets "stuck" whenever it runs out of TX (slowly, but progressively), however it can't free TX because something (that it can't sacrifice because data would end up permanently lost, despite it supposedly not being lost) is using that 6th slot. Now, it'll have a little success, but inevitably because this queue's usage grows and can't be freed at the rate in which it gets used up, it inevitably gets truly stuck and connection is lost and cannot be re-established. Though, my guess is that i'm actually totally wrong, because i'm just making a wild guess on the data, but if all else fails, it's something to go on, because solving any of these messages could clear them up enough to see the real problem. The only thing i really can't explain is that i did have one good night where nothing happened in syslog for about 8 hours or why these messages appear so consistently. ** Attachment added: "The log's long, but i'd have to say that a good percentage of it is the realtek device. [Bug 350075] Re: Totem does not parse .asx file correctly
In 10.10 alpha 2 (with most-recent updates, Totem 2.30.2), the problem is still there. Totem still does not skill the start time parameter; the only good news is that now I can scroll the time bar so I don't have to wait for the time to elapse. BTW, the option to install the required codec is gone now. Now it says that there is no codec for the "Microsoft Media Server (MMS)" used in the .asx file. I have to install gstreamer-plugins-bad manually, only after that opening the same .asx file in question prompts me to install gstreamer-plugins-ugly and gstreamer-ffmpeg, and the file can be played. -- Totem does not parse .asx file correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/350075 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Your report says that the system was installed initially as a 10.04 LTS system, and 10.04 LTS doesn't even include lilo as a bootloader option by default - you have to download it from the network during install to use it at all. [Bug 589940] Re: [arrandale] maverick alpha 1 live doesn't display desktop
Good that the display now lights up. If I understand you correctly you have a working computer if you use an external mouse and keyboard. The mouse/keyboard problem is probably unrelated to the original problem. It may be related to using a daily build (it is possible that the mainline build of -rc4 is better) or that there are some out-of-tree drivers in the Ubuntu kernel that is not in the mainline kernel. Anyway, the Maverick kernel will be rebased to include all patches from 2.6.35-rc4 soon. At that point this bug should be fixed in Ubuntu. You can see when the ubuntu kernel was last updated at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux . Possible side issue, but have you tried disabling screen blanking (xset s 0) and disabling all other power management which might kick in N minutes after you last touched the machine? Also, you could try removing the battery and running just on mains, so that you don't get any ACPI events like "battery fully charged". My Thinkpad X100e has strange lockups in these circumstances. [Off-topic] > it seems to be a common assumption (and i agree with it) that Realtek just > doesn't care about making their product work (understandable, they make too > much money off of people simply buying new components rather than making old > ones work More likely, they care about their Windows customers but not those who replace Windows with Linux, since the product was never advertised as working with Linux in the first place. This makes buying a laptop for Linux a risky business. If you want a laptop with a Unix-based O/S which works out of the box, probably your best bet is a Macbook - but you pay a large premium for that. I notice Dell still have an Ubuntu page: http://www.dell.co.uk/ubuntu but AFAICS that now links to a list of laptops with Windows and no mention of Ubuntu. [Bug 585651] Re: Cannot install on eDP laptops such as HP Elitebook 2540p or 8440p
commit fe27d53e5c597ee5ba5d72a29d517091f244e974 Author: Dave Airlie Date: Wed Jun 30 11:46:17 2010 +1000 i915: fix ironlake edp panel setup (v4) The eDP spec claims a 20% overhead for the 8:10 encoding scheme used on the wire. Take this into account when picking the lane/clock speed for the panel. v3: some panels are out of spec, try our best to deal with them, don't refuse modes on eDP panels, and try the largest allowed settings if all else fails on eDP. v4: fix stupid typo, forgot to git add before amending.
