work on making Ubuntu more useful in their language. If you want to

[Bug 491254] [NEW] eucalyptus CLEAN=1 should also be supported in start

2009-12-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
Public bug reported:

CLEAN=1 support has been implemented as part of bug 460089, to avoid
cleaning up the CC network state at each restart. A CLEAN=1 option was
added to the post-stop in eucalyptus-cc.conf. A similar option should be
added to the pre-start so that CLEAN=1 is also supported at start. That
will mimic what the eucalyptus init script provides (cleanstart and
cleanstop).

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf

On my system, whenever I use SSHFS to transfer files to a slow
connection, "gconf-helper" turns into a Zombie with the following
results:

- Starting Firefox complains:

Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that
you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS
locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for
information. (Details - 1: Server ping error:
IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)

- Gnome terminal doesn't start

- Gnome editor starts with default settings

- I need to reboot, logout/login or kill "gconfd-2" (which still causes
problems, because applications don't see other instances of themselves
running)

2009-12-02 Thread Kjue
I think I am also experiencing this problem. I get some warnings when I
run the polkit daemon and cannot get any information from the console-
kit. I just did a fresh install and tried to bring my system to the same
status as when I had on the Hardy installation. I copied the users from
that installation along with their passwords and all. I was able to
resume all my other services like apache, samba and myth, but when audio
didn't start I started digging and got here.

No surprise it works in the others, they are all the same (2.6 - which
is the default python version since karmic and exactly what sab 0.5.x
uses). Sabnzbdplus 0.4.x on the other hand uses 2.5 exclusively, install
the "python2.5" package if it's not yet on your system and run the test

[Bug 490382] Re: eucalyptus-cc init script doesn't always clear /var/lib/eucalyptus/CC

2009-12-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
CLEAN=1 is supported in eucalyptus-cc.conf, not in eucalyptus.conf. So maybe
it's something like:
stop eucalyptus CLEAN=1 -> FAIL (env not passed to eucalyptus-cc)
stop eucalyptus-cc CLEAN=1 -> PASS
start eucalyptus[-cc] CLEAN=1 -> FAIL (start not supported, bug 491254)
restart eucalyptus CLEAN=1 -> FAIL (env not passed to eucalyptus-cc)

Looks quite non-deterministic from here.
Dustin, if you can confirm the above behavior, in the end it's a matter of what
CLEAN commands we want to support. IMHO we should support "restart eucalyptus
CLEAN=1" and "stop eucalyptus CLEAN=1", "start eucalyptus CLEAN=1", "stop
eucalyptus-cc CLEAN=1" and "start eucalyptus[-cc] CLEAN=1", since we mainly use
the eucalyptus script to drive eucalyptus in general, but should also support
stopping and starting eucalyptus-cc only.

[Bug 477104] Re: After 9.10 grub update can not boot into Wubi install

2009-12-02 Thread efrost
Hello!

Also have this problem and tried all the suggested solutions - nothing
works. Though, I can boot from grub's shell manually.

After this crash, I've completely reinstalled Ubuntu and now I have two images
- the working one and the broken one.
I am wondering, what if I just copy everything related to grub from the working
image into the broken image - might it help? ...I just don't know where are all
grub's files... could you give me some hint about it?

One more thing (may be very stupid): I can't get this idea with grub and
grub2. What is the difference and why I still have grub2 shell if I
purge grub2 and install grub via apt-get?

Regards,
efrost

[Bug 490615] Re: ubuntu modifications 0.8 (and earlier) breaks some flash based apps like o'reilly safari

2009-12-02 Thread buddycat
hi,

umm...i think that in my previous comment about an hour ago i made it
clear that i created a new profile. in fact, just to be sure, i removed
the entire .mozilla folder and had it create a new one.

secondly, i have been in touch with safari techs who report that the
flash player has problems on ubuntu (ie it isn't just me).

third, did you actually try to read a book on your bookshelf. i was able
to make the preview work ok, but if you actually create an account and
load a book and read it (ie in full mode not in preview mode) then it
pukes.

[Bug 490615] Re: ubuntu modifications 0.8 (and earlier) breaks some flash based apps like o'reilly safari

2009-12-02 Thread buddycat
also, i have reproduced this problem on three new installs of karmic on
2 64 bit amd machines and a 32 bit pentium. all behave the same way and
all now work because i removed the ubuntu ff mods and then created a new
profile. just creating a new profile with ubuntu ff mods enabled results
in the site not working. i have spent several hours yesterday and today
trying various permutations and it always comes back to ubuntu ff mods
screwing my profile and then breaking apps.

as an aside what benefit is there really to ff mods? installing out of

[Bug 432238] Re: Xsplash does not start till very late into boot process

2009-12-02 Thread Peterbeter
Here same problem after a fresh install of 9.10.
But found a possible cause: by increasing (in my case) the bootloader
(grub2)menu reslolution (in Startup-Manager). After a restart the text had
disappeared.
Disadvantage: Text in the bootloader is very small now and hard to read.

Most likely this bug is related to Grub2 implementation.
In another desktop PC I upgraded from 9.04 (saving Grub1) and did not have the
problem.

[Bug 461156] Re: User data is not parsed correctly by Eucalyptus in some cases

2009-12-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
** Description changed:

- User data supplied using "euca-run-instances --user-data-file" is not decoded
before being presented to the instance.
- Inside the instance, "curl http://169.254.169.254/latest/user-data"; should

encoded string. This breaks ec2-run-user-data from the ec2-init package,

  EC2 documentation at

states that EC2 will return decoded data (i don't have a ec2 account so i

the special characters in the urlsafe-base64-encoded string) is necessary.

  Karmic release notes:

user-data not usable by guest instances

Starting an instance with euca-run-instances and user-data (either using
the -d, --user-data option or the -f, --user-data-file option) will
store the user data in base64 encoding. Accessing the user data from
the instance at http://169.254.169.254/latest/user-data will return the
user data in base64 encoding. Because of this bug ec2-init is unable
make use of user-data. In order to use this data it must first be
decoded. A fix for this issue is expected to be provided in a post-

[Bug 491270] [NEW] [MIR] seed

screen. The panel contains, among other things, two weather applets.
When I log in, the panel hangs (about 80% of the time, as the original
submitter reported). If I then do "killall gnome-panel" from the
console, the panel becomes complete and responsive again, but the two
weather applets are missing.

Maybe these applets have something to do with it?

[Bug 478658] Re: Skype+Pulseaudio ->extensive use of the CPU power

2009-12-02 Thread P4man
Im marking this as confirmed.
Its clearly related to our audio card + pulse audio + recording and its
definitely a bug as recording is impossible with any app, whether it is Skype,
gnome-sound-recorder or anything else. CPU utilisation goes through the roof
and the recording fails.

update SITE list is empty. The list ABOVE the filter is empty, not the

This bug report is about the list "Work with:"

Please, stop "bugging this bug report".
This is not the bug fixed by setting GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS which is about the
little rectangular box ( BELOW the update SITE LIST ) showing as empty while is
not.

[Bug 477104] Re: After 9.10 grub update can not boot into Wubi install

2009-12-02 Thread efrost
I think I've found a solution for me.

Steps:
1. Completely remove grub, grub2, grub-pc and grub-common packages.
2. Delete all files in the /boot/grub directory
3. Delete packages cache, so they'll be downloaded once more (don't know
whether it is necessray)
4. Install grub-pc and grub-common packages only
5. Run update-grub2
6. reboot

So, I don't have installed grub and grub2 packages now and it works!

[Bug 491275] [NEW] efax- Warning: /dev/ttyS0 locked or busy - waiting

2009-12-02 Thread John Hagerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

ubuntu 9.10amd64 using kernel 2.6.31-14 on x86/x86_64 has something loading at
boot which takes over ttyS0 and normally refuses to release it for use by efax.
In 9.04, efax worked perfectly with a USR5610 modem with a driver converted
from Red Hat by debian. This problem arrived with the 9.10 upgrade.
Note there have been three occasions in the past month when ttyS0 HAS been
released and, in those rare instances, efax has worked perfectly.
Unfortunately, on each occasion reboot has returned the "locked or busy"
situation.
If I could find the guilty package I could perhaps modify or remove it, but I
have had no luck in the hunt.

Jack
