[Bug 258611] Re: Korganizer: Terrible delay in mouse action on calendar

2008-10-29 Thread Richard Birnie
Rigo,

thanks for the input. That certainly moves us forward quite a bit. I
think we can say the slow Calendar problem has been diagnosed. One could
argue that Kontact ought to migrate all the existing events
automatically but for now lets try to get to the root of the typing
problem. I'm not sure what would cause this. It sounds like some kind of
problem with keyboard input which suggests the X system but I can't
think why it would be unique to kmail.

You said earlier that Konqueror and dolphin behave themselves. What
about Kate or Kwrite? I'm jut trying to think of applications where you
do a decent amount of typing. Are you using Konqueror to post this
thread?

[Bug 175829] Re: [Hardy]b43 wireless driver: WiFi LED is out when interface up and vice versa

2008-10-29 Thread Leann Ogasawara
der_vegi, since you are the original bug repoter, and have confirmed
this is resolved for you I am marking this back to "Fix Released". For
those of you still experiencing issues it would be best to open a new
bug as you likely have different hardware than the original reporter
which will likely require a different fix. It's best to not hijack
another reporter's bug even if you have the same symptoms since many
times kernel bugs are hardware specific. Thanks.

I can confirm that this is still a problem.

It's even more a problem that somtimes I suspend doesn't work (e.g.
when transmission bittorrent is running, or because of another issue).
And if I don't have access to another computer to ssh into my box, I
am then forced to hard stop the machine.

I am strongly considering to pay for support to solve this issue. Or
find an appropriate work-around.

[Bug 277373] Re: cannot start X session since intrepid beta on 845G-based system

2008-10-29 Thread Anders Nylund
I have the exact same problem on a fuijitsu-siemens amilo laptop.
Graphics is integrated intel 82845G/GL. I had hardy on it, then it
worked most of the time with nosplash boot option. I tried intrepid
live-cd alpha 5 and with that it worked fine. Did never try the beta
live cd. Now I network upgraded to intrepid RC, and I cannot log in
anymore. GDM starts fine, but the login hangs with a brown-orange
background and a moving mouse cursor (arrow, not big X). Nothing else
works. No ctrl-alt-F1, no sysreq-reisub, nothing. Only power off. Then I
downloaded intrepid RC live cd, and booting from that is exactly the
same, hangs on login. I can boot to the root terminal in recovery mode,
but that's about it. I can try to get some info out of some logs later
if that would help.

I'm running 8.04.1 AMD64 and I've system updated to latest.

This happens with a Silicon Wave USB bluetotth adapter (I think it has a
Broadcom 2035 chipset, not sure).

I can provide any info you need for debugging the issue, thanks.

Re: [Bug 207942] Re: Keyboard layout change on Ctrl+Shift, scroll_lock changes on Alt+Shift independently

2008-10-29 Thread Yuri Nikiforov
Good morning

This bug is absent in 8.10 beta installed 4 day ago on clean hard drive.

There are others, like that I can't setup my network and internet thru vpn
using network-manager and finally I've made things editing manually files in
/etc/bla-bla..., I don't for that time know how to make my second monitor
work under Ubuntu although in WinXP it's simple, Total Player don't show my
subtitles although WinXP's Zoom Player does and VLC does under both Ubuntu
and XP, Ubuntu every time adds +3 hours to bios time and displays incorrect
time while rebooting to XP shows all ok (maybe Win and Linux works around
time zones not the same ways), compiz often loses the colour of window title
but after resizing or moving the window it's title restores to normal, and I
don't know whether somethere is something like system restore for those who
forget to make a backup of config file edited manually, ...

But thanks for all of you for all your hard work. I spent many ours with
ubuntu, I like it in server version, I like it in desktop and maybe in
sometime I'll be using it more.

[Bug 290587] [NEW] floppy drive not working

2008-10-29 Thread alienexplorers

I am having a problem accessing the system floppy drive. First off it
is not detected by the kernel. Second, if I do a sudo modprobe floppy

to the floppy drive. I use the floppy drive to keep backups of my

[Bug 290266] Re: [needs-packaging] game editor

2008-10-29 Thread Dan MacDonald
Just got a reply from the author. I pointed him towards this page and
said that we didn't think GE would be able to be included in Ubuntu but
he says otherwise:

-

Hi Dan,

Thanks you for your message.
It's fine for the ubuntu distro have the Game Editor if put the Game
Editor in the Software catalogue page at ubuntu.com site.

Regards,

I think he means http://packages.ubuntu.com/ when he says catalog page
but I'm not sure.

Of course, there is still the problem of the Raknet lib, which seems to
be under a CC license but it depends what your using it for so again I'm
unsure where we stand with this. Maybe GE could be included in Ubuntu
without RakNet support? It also requires LLVM and wxwidgets but both
those are already in Ubuntu. I've not compiled GE myself so I don't know
if Raknet is a required or optional dep.

I eject it using the onscreen icon eject line it ejects the CD and then
before I can remove the disk the CD door immediately closes. If I use
the disk mounter icon in the panel I get the same result. The only way

[Bug 273601] Re: 8.10 intrepid alpha 6 - root file system mounted read only (XFS) with2.6.27-4-generic

2008-10-29 Thread Peter Cordes
Leann, thanks for the reply on my bug that's a dup of this. I thought
I'd already posted my workaround, but it turns out I only posted it on
bug 253786 (/dev/.static/dev is left read-only). Since I found a
workaround, this bug hasn't caused me any problems.

Anyway, you can convince the init scripts to remount the bind mount read-write
as well as the main root filesystem with this in fstab
/dev/dev/.static/dev bind remount,rw 0 0

That avoids triggering the bug with XFS root filesystems. And it makes
/dev/.static/dev read-write, so MAKEDEV works, so I'll be keeping this
in my fstab even after the XFS bug is fixed. see bug 253786 for more
discussion on ro/rw, and how it gets that way in the first place.

If you don't want to break the kernel freeze, you could possibly add
this workaround to update-manager's collection of quirks. (e.g. test if
xfs_info / shows that the root filesystem is xfs, then append a line to
/etc/fstab.)

Hmm, reading the fix description, XFS has a per-FS read-only flag?
That doesn't sound like it would interact well with various combinations
of read-only and read-write bind mounts... Could be a security hole if
you think you have a ro bind mount for a chroot, but some FS ops are
allowed. I'll test this and report a bug if I remember and have time,
and it's not already known.

Right, so I devote this bug report to this aspect, since it is both
feasible and helps to what you have in mind.

It's actually not the only reason, but certainly the most important
one. Others are:

 - Crash report processing takes a lot of CPU and I/O resources and
   disk space, which is inconvenient.

 - By the time we release we should already have the really bad
crashes reported, and we won't fix the uncritical/seldom ones in
stables (SRU policy). Besides, during the development cycle
we get way more crash reports than we could ever triage/fix anyway.

Thanks,

Martin

[Bug 275692] Re: ath_pci must be reloaded after resume

2008-10-29 Thread Loïc Minier
I think madwifi wont be kept for much longer as ath5k / ath9k are
supposed to replace it entirely pretty soon (perhaps already in 2.6.28);
hence linux-restricted-common seems like the good place to ship the
file. I think it's easier to think of changing the value in lrm if we
update to a madwifi which doesn't need this hack, but this is very
unlikely anyway.

I didn't want to add the file to pm-utils because it makes us pile
hardware specific files to parse on suspend/resume which are already
slowish on some devices when using pm-utils. (I see it a bit like init
script proliferation slowing down boot.)

[Bug 250623] Re: package is missing the default configuration file

2008-10-29 Thread Pajari Räsänen
On a2mp3 manpage (http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/intrepid/man1/a2mp3.html)
we can read:
---
FILES

/etc/a2mp3.conf
The main config file, adjust it to your needs
---

However, I installed a2mp3 through Synaptic but no config file is to be
found. The source package does not contain such files:
a2mp3_0.01-0ubuntu4.tar.gz (found in
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/misc/a2mp3).

[Bug 290264] Re: Proprietary driver ath_hal tagged as free

2008-10-29 Thread Martin Pitt
What you see there isn't ath_hal, it's the free driver:

[Bug 290244] Re: [intrepid] No notification to reboot is displayed after driver install

This is actually on purpose. GNOME does not support this reboot

So unless someone argues really strongly for it, I'd like to keep it as
it is.

input to first. It furthermore requires to use the mouse to select this
menu item.

Under KDE 3, konsole was able to define a keyboard shortcut to activate
"Send Input to All Sessions". This feature was very convenient, since I
often open SSH connections in different tabs to different machines. So,
with only using the keyboard, I was quickly able to send some commands
to all machines and run some other commands in the current tab only.
Under KDE 4, doing similar work requires several mouse/keyboard
interaction steps. In particular, I also cannot even find a possibility
to define a keyboard shortcut for "Copy Input to..." (while a keyboard
shortcut is possible for most other things in konsole, even for
functions like "About KDE").

[Bug 290370] Re: apport bug reporting is too hard

2008-10-29 Thread Martin Pitt
We only enable apport in the development release, not in stables, thus
"typical users" won't see it anyway.

However, by the time apport pops up, the underlying application has
crashed already, so there is no chance to interact with it in any way.

What are your suggestions to make the workflow more friendly?

Just to clarify, files reception is now handle with gnome-user-share, so
first you need to go to System->Preferences and activate file sharing

It is inconvenient that the upgrade procedure crashes because of a
corrupted package.

The upgrade procedure was left in a state where it was not clear whether
it is safe to restart the computer or not.

I think that upgrade-manager should offer an option to download and re-
install the packages that failed to install and to complete the upgrade.

Right, the time zone selector in the GNOME panel should have all the
big cities. However, in tzdata there is only ever one representative
city (usually the largest) for a time zone.

> In China, there are only two time zone which are Asia/Beijing and

Ah, so you are saying that the "representatives" for the zones should
change? If so, this should be discussed at [EMAIL PROTECTED], to
make this change upstream (maintaining this as a Delta in Ubuntu would
be error prone and incompatible with other software).

Thanks!

[Bug 290166] Re: Intrepid alternate USB boot requires a cd

2008-10-29 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Hi!

I'm using Hardy 32-bit Kubuntu to run Unetbootin or isotostick (I tried
both!) to create the bootable usb stick from kubuntu-intrepid-RC-
AMD64-alternate image.

I didn't test yet other images (Ubuntu or Kubuntu full live) to give
more information. I tried to run the md5 check but again it required a
cd so it didn't help.

download live image -> burn on cd -> use the new tool to create a
botable usb doesn't work if you don't have a cd drive and only have one
computer to work on.

Can someone confirm that they've beeb able to make this work or if it
failed like it did for me?
