[Bug 268863] [NEW] Ubunto doesn't install on bootable SD-card

2008-09-11 Thread Harald Welte
Public bug reported:

Recently, BIOS vendors have been starting to implement a 'boot from SD
card' feature, much like they have added 'boot from USB memory stick'
some years ago.

The only SD-card host controller that I've seen this implemented for is
SDHCI compliant host controllers.

While this is a nice feature to support, for most systems it is just a
gimmick and not something neccessarry.

However, there are hand-held devices such as netbooks in the pipeline
which do not have any other mass storage device. No hard disk and no
IDE-attached flash disk or the like. They just have one (more likely two
or more) SD card slots and you install and store not only your data but
the entire operating system on that SD card.

Furthermore, there are products like Samsung moviNAND which are
basically a SDcard in a BGA package that can be soldered onto a PCB. So
from a protocol and software point of view it is a SD card, but it is
mechanically soldered onto the board. Such device have gained some
popularity in ARM-based designs, but we'll likely see them in the x86
world, too.

I have tested to install "Ubuntu Intrepid alpha 5 desktop i386" and it
did not work

 Bootloader requirements

There are no specific requirements on the bootloader, since BIOS
abstracts all low-level details about how to talk to the SD card
(controller) in the usual way through the BIOS ABI.

However, the program that installs the actuall bootloader record (grub-
install, grub-installer, the 'lilo' commandline program) has to
understand that /dev/mmcblk* is a valid block device and be able to
discover the mapping between /dev/mmcblk* and the BIOS device number.

For grub (grub1, the old version), see

* http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?24181
* http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/download.php?file_id=16416

[edit]
Installer requirements

The distribution installation initrd needs to

   1. include and auto-load the sdhc.ko and sdhci_pci.ko kernel modules
   2. create the /dev/mmcblk* device nodes as per udev/hotplug events

The actual distribution installation program needs to

   1. recognize /dev/mmcblk* as block devices that can be used as target device
   2. use a grub-install or similar program that can discover the bios drive
number to /dev/mmcblk* device name mapping

[Bug 264727] Re: The new CUPS-DDK-generated PPDs do not contain lines to handle custom page sizes any more

2008-09-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
The #2 does not break anything. If the input stream is PostScript and if
it gets inserted into the input data stream it does not break anything.
It sets the requested paper size by means of PostScript and Ghostscript
understnds this and in our case (HPIJS) we feed the input stream
directly into Ghostscript.

foomatic-rip should ignore the code of this line if "PageSize" is not a
PostScript type option (for HPIJS "PageSize" is command line type). In
general, foomatic-rip should prioritize the "*PageSize Custom: ..." and
"*FoomaticRIPOption PageSize=Custom: ..." lines in the PPD file if
present.

Please check with foomatic-rip 3.x (all distros except Ubuntu Intrepid)
and foomatic-rip 4.x (Ubuntu Intrepid). In foomatic-rip 4.x I have
already found a problem, http://bugs.linux-
foundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171, Lars Uebernickel will fix it before
Intrepid release, most probably next week.

[Bug 248855] Re: (Hardy) Hibernate crash on Dell Inspiron 1521

2008-09-11 Thread 3gun
there is solution that worked on my Dell Inspiron 1521.
1. go to System/Administrating/Hardware Drivers and install Wireless firmware
2. gedit fstab and replace swap partition UUID with its device path. F.e.
#UUID=8cc76dfe-0a42-4948-b3aa-2830c11b6114 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/sda5 none swap sw 0 0
Reboot and than try to hibernate. Maybe this will be a note for Ubuntu
developers that some programs do not work correctly with device UUID's.
P.S. `uname a`=="Linux notebook 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 17:53:40

KMix shows no slider for headphone sound). Mp3 sound in Amarok when

It looks good and works for me. I'd just change a few bits in debian/changelog:
 - change to (LP: #262665) to get the bug automatically closed on upload
 - not mention the Maintainer change, we have to do it anyway for every upload
where we differ from Debian

2008-09-11 Thread Helmuth Gronewold
Public bug reported:

[Bug 268864] [NEW] Play/Pause button does not toggle between pause and play icon when pushed

Public bug reported:

Very minor bug, or possibly even a feature. The play/pause button always shows

[Bug 162831] Re: system > preference > sessions unchecked items still appear in session file

2008-09-11 Thread Norbert Hartl
I'm using intrepid ibex alpha 5 (plus updates). I'm having tracker
disabled in the preferences>session menu. But at every system start
trackerd gets started as well. As far as I remember I didn't have
trouble with this in hardy. So I reopen this as a new bug.

[Bug 268868] [NEW] [Intrepid Alpha 5] NameVirtualHost entry in ports.conf causes "NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts" warning

2008-09-11 Thread Dax Solomon Umaming
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

I've setup a sandbox and configured VirtualHosts.
I noticed that NameVirtualHost has an entry in /etc/apache2/ports.conf
I've configured /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and added a few more
VirtualHost entries there but reload only gave me a warning:
[Thu Sep 11 15:05:04 2008] [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts

Here's my /etc/apache2/sites-available/default file:

NameVirtualHost *

DocumentRoot "/var/www"
ServerName localhost

DocumentRoot "/home/dax/Codes/OMS"
ServerName oms

DocumentRoot "/home/dax/Codes/Ticketing"
ServerName ticketing

Servers ticketing and oms are both pointed at 127.0.0.1 on /etc/hosts
and this setup should've worked. However, no matter what server I
access, I always end up at /var/www.

I soon found out that /etc/apache2/ports.conf has NameVirtualHost entry:

# If you just change the port or add more ports here, you will likely also
# have to change the VirtualHost statement in
# /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default

NameVirtualHost *:80
Listen 80

# SSL name based virtual hosts are not yet supported, therefore no
# NameVirtualHost statement here
Listen 443

I commented out NameVirtualHost and got my oms and radio servers working
after reload.

[Bug 268588] Re: Disk I/O is very slow, system freezes for seconds

2008-09-11 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
I can't test 2.6.27 kernels since machine locks up when starting gdm
(X), so I'm using the "old" kernel (from hardy) even with intrepid, but
it's another issue.

I'm attaching output of lspci then dmesg. I'll try 2.6.27 later maybe
without X to be able to test it.

[Bug 268580] Re: Prompt for BOOT_DEGRADED=true|false in thre

2008-09-11 Thread ceg
When a disk fails in a running system a raid will run degraded. The
System doesn't stop, and probably should't. The mdadm notification
functionality brings this to the admins attention.

So changing the default to bootdegraded=yes seems reasonable, once the
patches are tested to work with enough configurations, and will be safe,
if no other md devices than the ones neccessary to set up the fstab are
touched.

(This is when mdadm --incremental is used in udev rules and only
specific raids will be run even degraded on boot with mdadm --run
/dev/mdX)

[Bug 268873] [NEW] 'Do you wish to start the degraded RAID' not visible

2008-09-11 Thread Michael Kofler
Public bug reported:

installed intrepid alpha 5 (using vmware) for a RAID1 + LVM scenario

removed disk0, tried to boot, and fell back into busybox

the problem: for a normal alternate installation (not from the server
CD), splash is activated by default; therefore, the question 'Do you
wish to start the degraded RAID' times out because it is invisible in
the graphical boot animation; the text modus is only activated after the
timeout; you can avoid this by booting in recovery mode or by removing
the splash option in the GRUB kernel line

apart from this minor glitch, everything works fine now as described in

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mdadm/+bug/120375/comments/105

---

PS: I really believe bootdegraded=1 should be the default setting
(remote servers, root servers at a remote ISP etc.)

also: for a server installation I prefer LTS, and it looks like I have
to wait for 10.04 to get these fixes included by default; please re-
consider providing updates and including them in 8.04.2

** Affects: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu)

I also get the same kind of problems with compiz since I upgraded to

- pressing F11 (full screen mode of firefox) twice (fullscreen and back)
restores the window borders

[Bug 268864] Re: Play/Pause button does not toggle between pause and play icon when pushed

2008-09-11 Thread Jerry Snitselaar
Attaching pic of amarok paused.

When paused the background of the Play/Pause button is darker like it is
selected. When playing the background is not darker. There are other
indications on the screen as to the state so as I said a very minor bug,
but I think the expected behavior would be for the button to have a play
icon when paused, and a pause icon when playing.

[Bug 208551] Re: mdadm, Raid5 and XFS stuck in uninterruptable sleep

2008-09-11 Thread Colin King
SRU justification:

Impact: mdadm, Raid5 get stuck in uninterruptable sleep under heavy I/O
load. Copying data to a Raid 5 XFS partition results in a permanent lock
on several processes related to it, getting stuck in the D(+) state.
Occurs when large quantities of data (10-40 GB) is copied, resulting in
processes being unkillable, and the system cannot reboot and requires
power cycling the server.

Fix: The patch from commit 6ed3003c19a96fe18edf8179c4be6fe14abbebbc. The
fix is to not make any generic_make_request() calls in raid5
make_request until all waiting has been done. We do this by simply
setting STRIPE_HANDLE instead of calling handle_stripe(). This causes a
performance hit, so this patch also only calls raid5_activate_delayed()
at unplug time, never in raid5. This seems to bring back the
performance numbers. [quoting the commit message]

Testing: Without the patch, Raid 5 using md on an XFS filesystem locks
up under heavy data copying - this is repeatable. With the patch, the
lock up does not occur.

Patch tested from my PPA build by Andrew Cholakian (see previous
message)

[Bug 185387] Re: can not drag a file to a nautilus folder which uses list mode

2008-09-11 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Mike: it looks like bug #61237 is about a "design problem" in Nautilus,
namely that if you drag files into a list view window where only folders
are visible, the file will always be dropped into one of those folders.
On the other hand, this bug here is about a real "missing feature",
namely that you can't drag and drop files from file-roller into _any_
list view in Nautilus (apparently it's simply not implemented).

That's how I understand these two bugs, and so I'd say they are
different. They also have different bug reports upstream, which go into
more detail about the problems.

[Bug 162831] Re: system > preference > sessions unchecked items still appear in session file

2008-09-11 Thread Norbert Hartl
Why not? For me it is the same problem. What does the information about
the rewrite change? There is a problem which is there regardless the
fact if it has been reintroduced by patch or by rewrite. And it is
exactly the same problem as described in this report. I can't find any
version information in this ticket and I can't possibly know about a
rewrite. So what is your suggestion again? Closing the bug without
reopening another one that fits you better? That means, I have to wait
for the next rewrite and hope that the bug won't be reintroduced then?

[Bug 41137] Re: No indication that a resume from hibernation has begun

2008-09-11 Thread Matt Zimmerman
The "frozen" progress bar is indistinguishable from a fault which
interrupts the boot sequence, and this is the same problem which was
originally reported (though usplash displayed text progress messages at
that time).

We already check for the existence of a swsusp image for other reasons,
and should be able to communicate to usplash (as a simple text message
to start) that a resume is being attempted (and a further indication if
it fails).

[Bug 246141] Re: no support for realtek rtl8187se

2008-09-11 Thread Julien Barnier
I've managed to load the module with a 2.6.26 kernel. The way to do it
is the following :

cd rtk8187se_linux_26.1016.0716.2008/
cd ieee80211/
make
cp Module.symvers ../rtl8185/
cd ../rtl8185/
make
cd ..
sudo ./wlan0up

The important thing is to copy the Module.symvers file from the
ieee80211 folder to the rtl8185 one before compiling the r8180 module.

Then I am able to load the module. The card is seen and it seems that I
can connect to some networks (without WPA for the moment).

Hope that Helps,

Julien

[Bug 235119] Re: Coretemp outdated / can't show 45nm core temps

2008-09-11 Thread Colin King
For attention of lm-sensors maintainer:

Please find attached a debdiff for lm-sensors to enable sensing of 45nm
cores. This patch has been tested in my PPA https://launchpad.net
/~colin-king/+archive by therelic and Bart Verwilst. It would be good if
we can get this into Hardy 8.04.2.

Thanks. Colin.

[Bug 223660] Re: [ooo-build] [hardy] openoffice 2.4 spreadsheet grid lines missing

2008-09-11 Thread John Cottier
I confirm this bug in OpenOffice 2.4.1. I have just upgraded to Hardy
and now my firms spread sheets have disappearing grid lines and it looks
very ugly!

This happens if any fill colour is appplied to a cell, or group of
cells. Since the fill in my case is used for highlighting and is
required, the above fix does not apply to me. The only workaround if you
need the fill colour is on each individual cell to go to
Format..Cells..Borders, click on a closed box type, select 0.5 pt, and
choose colour "Light Grey 20%". But if you have a lot of cells this is
not really an option.

image-2.6.24-12-generic version 2.6.24-21.42. It works for me, i.e. I
could connect to my wireless network and the iwconfig cammand works
without crash now. Thanks for providing the new version.

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-09-11 Thread Mike Gerwitz
After attempting what was stated in my previous message (modifying the
monitoring interval to "100 * HZ" and recompiling the kernel), I have
not received the error. My PC has been on since my last post and my net
has not gone down. Speeds are excellent - above what I thought my max
was. I see no other problems.

I also noticed that the same error is happening on another computer of
mine, where it previously didn't. It may be attributed to a new kernel
version (2.6.25, while it was previously using 2.6.24). Therefore, I do
not think this problem lies within the rt61* drivers.

It's a good fix until others figure out a more effective solution. Hope
it helps everyone else.
