[Bug 209614] [NEW] Server Guide needs to document unattended-upgrades

2008-03-31 Thread Nick Barcet
Public bug reported:

Looking for documentation of unattended-upgrades in the server guide,
the only occurence I found was in the JeOS tutorial [1]. I think it
would be quite conveniently documented where people might look for it,
ie the chapter 3 - Package Management.

The section should not only document the package installation, but also
explain the risks of doing so and where are the logs so one can check
for problems.

[Bug 208243] Re: MacSlow Clock 12-24 Error

2008-03-31 Thread Bruce R
After a re-installation involving 266 Updates, the first removing conflict
software, the MacSlow clock is better, as shown by new screen shot attached.
The 24-hour display hour hand is very slightly out, but it's OK - great work
by someone !
As you will see from the screen shot, you can have more than one instance, say
a 12-hor clock across all virtual desktops plus a 24-hour clock on just one !
(It's things like these little desktop toys that'll help promote Hardy Heron.)

So, please close this Bug report, and thanks again !

[Bug 205959] Re: [hardy] console-setup uses critical debconf questions if LANG=C

2008-03-31 Thread Colin Watson
I don't think your diagnosis is correct. console-setup asks the layout
and variant questions at priority critical if it's being run outside
d-i. This may be necessary to make upgrades from pre-console-setup
systems work properly, but I'll drop the priority on fresh installs.

[Bug 127173] Re: strange Xorg screen blanking control after resume from suspend to disk

2008-03-31 Thread Dan Am
There seems to be a problem with /sys/class/backlight, which gets
referred by /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video:

reset_brightness() {
for bl in /sys/class/backlight/* ; do
[ -d $bl ] || continue
[ -f $bl/brightness ] || continue
BR=$(cat $bl/brightness)
echo 0 > $bl/brightness
echo $BR > $bl/brightness
done
}

However /sys/class/backligzht is empty and thuis the function just has no
function. Loading of modules "lcd" and "cr_bllcd" does not change this.
Still working on it...

[Bug 182712] Re: trackerd crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-03-31 Thread Paulo J. S. Silva
I had the bug in feisty and after compiling and svn version it seemed
gone.

Now I upgraded to Hardy and the bug is back. I can easily reproduce it
using a stripped version of my email structure as a evolution backup.
Since this data has personal information I can not put it here as an
attachment. But I can send it if a developer wants it and contact me
directly be email. Jamie already has access to it.

The good news is that applying Jamie's patch above to the Hardy's
tracker source make the bug disappear. So it looks like we get a fix.

[Bug 139764] Re: Gutsy needs more recent v4l-dvb revision for support of Nova-T 500

2008-03-31 Thread Eamonn Sullivan
The beta of 8.04 is still showing multiple disconnects per day for the
Nova-T 500 card. I've entered another bug report (before I saw this one)
with a pointer to a kernel patch that appears to be the fix.

This is a one-line patch, but it makes mythtv usable for people with the
Nova-T 500 card (a popular over-the-air digital TV tuner). Can this be
included in the final kernel please?

[Bug 204857] Re: USB port disabled by hup (EMI? re enabling)

2008-03-31 Thread Eamonn Sullivan
I'm experiencing the same problem with a DVB-T card on hardy. The fix
for it apparently is one-line, in one file:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.24.y.git;a=commit;h=5475187c2752adcc6d789592b5f68c81c39e5a81

Without this patch, my tuner card (a Hauppauge Nova-T 500 dual tuner)
disconnects multiple times a day, making Hardy Heron all but useless as
a MythTV platform. Can we please revisit the decision to push this patch
off to the next version?

[Bug 173813] Re: n-m-openvpn not work with manually configured interface

2008-03-31 Thread Chris Jones
Network Manager has an interface option to configure manual network setups. The
fact that it actually calls gnome-system-tools is irrelevant.
There is absolutely no point in the openvpn plugin asking for a device when it
just makes a UDP/TCP connection. It should make that in the same way that every
other networked application does - with connect() and letting the system's
interface/routing jazz work out the details of where to send the packet.

[Bug 209622] [NEW] OpenOffice.org doesn't match FreeDesktop directories specs

2008-03-31 Thread XioNoX

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice.org doesn't match FreeDesktop directories specs

On linux, OpenOffice.org use (only ?) the $HOME/.openoffice.org2 folder.
Witch doesn't match FreeDesktop.org recomendations.
You should use the $XDG_CONFIG_HOME environement variable ($HOME/.config)
For all your config/preferences files. This folder should be removable
without any data loss.
Then, all the user data like dictionnary, extentions, templates,... should be
in $XDG_DATA_HOME ($HOME/.local/share).
And, if any, your cache should be in $XDG_CACHE_HOME ($HOME/.cache).

[Bug 209628] [NEW] mod_log_sql query quoting

2008-03-31 Thread Wido den Hollander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libapache2-mod-log-sql

mod_log_sql does not quote table-names when inserting in the (MySQL)
database, this causes the query to fail on certain table-names.

I also reported this to OutOfOrder, this report can be found at:
http://issues.outoforder.cc/view.php?id=83

A small change in mod_log_sql.c should fix this issue and "odd" table-
names should be accepted.

[Bug 209629] [NEW] Cannot remount SD card after unmounting

2008-03-31 Thread Артём Попов
Public bug reported:

After unmounting and removing an SD card, I insert it again and again,
but it does not open in Nautilus, neither it is shown on the desktop nor
the computer:/// folder.

These lines appear in /var/log/messages any time the card is inserted
(and the actual device is created in /dev):

Mar 31 18:33:10 teaquetzl kernel: [10185.574950] mmc0: new high speed SD card
at address b368

So I suggest, the bug is somewhere on the GNOME side, not in the kernel/HAL.

[Bug 112937] Re: vmware server will not connect remotely

2008-03-31 Thread Soren Hansen
This is really a pam bug.

vmware-server uses pam as shipped in ia32-libs. pam hardcodes the
/lib/security path, but on amd64 installations, this is where the 64-bit
pam modules are, so we end up with a 32 bit application tryin to dlopen
a 64 bit binary, which obviously doesn't work. What needs to be done in
pam is to check if (uname says we're running 64 bit && we're compiled
for 32 bit) we should go looking in /lib32/security instead.

[Bug 44704] Re: Expects to find libpython2.4.so, should look for libpython2.4.so.1

2008-03-31 Thread James Westby
Hi,

Here's a patch for this issue.

It uses the workaround of just adding ".1", which isn't great,
but which should be ok for Hardy.

Also it pulls in the patch from the upstream bug to update
the definitions so that they are up-to-date with current
nautilus.

Thanks,

James

Reproducable with the sepolgen and python-libxml2 from gutsy and then:

$ sudo dpkg --unpack
/var/cache/apt/archives/sepolgen_1.0.11-0ubuntu1_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/python-sepolgen_1.0.11-0ubuntu1_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/python-libxml2_2.6.31.dfsg-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb

from hardy.

[Bug 208715] Re: nautilus-share: share can not have the same name as a user

2008-03-31 Thread old_toby
So actually we have two issues now:

1. AFAIK there is no GUI which can export the home directories
automatically (you have to do it in /etc/samba/smb.conf). With something
like that my problem would be gone. And also I think there's no
application to see a list of all the shared folders (except in
smb.conf). Would that be possible with nautilus-share? Or what package
would be the right one to assign such a bug to?

2. The error message "'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare
add: share name blabliblabla is already a valid system user name" looks
ugly. It could be changed to something more lisible like "There is
already a system user called blabliblabla. Usershares can't have the
same name as system users." If issue no. 1 is solved you could even add
"Home folders can be shared with system->shared folders" or similar.

I could also work on the second one (the first one is still a bit too
high for me).

[Bug 209466] Re: [zd1211rw] can't connect to hidden network

2008-03-31 Thread Christiansen
Alexander, didn't I title it "zd1211rw" ?, I'm sorry.

Steffen who submittet a Atheros bugfix (208306) has kindly provided me
with a patch to test the ZyXEL adapters, containing this code addition
to the debian patch as far as I know :

+   } else if (!nm_null_safe_strcmp("zd1211rw", kernel_driver)) {
+   nm_info("testing fix for zd1211rw");
+   ap_scan = "AP_SCAN 1";
+   has_buggy_apscan_2 = TRUE;

Unfortunately the patch do not work quit as I expected, but seems as a step
closer to a solution.
The odd is that a "iwconfig" now shows a funny essid while the connection is
going on - something like "}2% af¨&~", but different from connection
attempt to connection attempt. Executing a "sudo iwconfig eth1 essid MySSID"
while connecting make it connect. I've seen you mention something about this in
another bug I think, so maybe you have a solution on this issue ?

error messages. However, if I rmmod b44 and ssb, then modprobe
ndiswrapper, wlan0 gets created and works fine.

[Bug 204857] Re: USB port disabled by hup (EMI? re enabling)

2008-03-31 Thread Mark Cox
Hi,

I'd agree with that, I to use a Nova T-500, you can't have a simple
issue like this in an LTS release, an LTS release is exactly what people
would choose to base a mythtv system on. I don't mind pulling changes
from v4l-dvb but I don't fancy building a new kernel to fix a simple
issue.

[Bug 209634] [NEW] firefox + flash video: crash playing second movie

2008-03-31 Thread knarf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Firefox 3.0 beta 4 + flashplugin-nonfree leads to crashes playing second
(or third or fourth) flash movie clips. This problem has been reported
many times but so far all reports seem to be labeled 'invalid' because
the report does not contain the needed data. I can not see whether this
report contains a valid stack trace, nor do I know whether the
proprietary flash plugin leads itself to producing such.

As this is a real, existing and annoying problem and as the proprietary
flash plugin unfortunately remains the only way to play the majority of
the flash video content out 'there' on the web it would be good to find
a way to limit these crashes.

Short of breaking into Adobe to fix the bugs in their software I'm
afraid there is no real solution (given that the crashes stem from
problems in the flash plugin and not from problems in Firefox or any
related plugins that is) other than to run the flash plugin as an
external process which can be respawned if it dies. This seems to be the
way the Opera browser handles flash (and other plugins) judging from the
presence of 'operapluginwrapper' and 'operaplugincleaner' processes
which get spawned when doing anything flashy. Killing these processes
does nothing to Opera itself. Reloading the page containing the flash
content leads to these processes being respawned.

It is clear that this approach to handling unstable plugins leads to
fewer crashes related to those plugins. It also seems to lower
performance of flash somewhat. I for one would be willing to sacrifice
some performance with unstable proprietary software to gain immunity
from the many bugs hidden in the proprietary code. For free plugins this
approach should not be necessary as it is possible to actually fix the
bugs. With proprietary code this is not possible.

[Bug 197922] Re: firefox & epiphany icons too big in 1900 pixel width in Hardy

2008-03-31 Thread htoug
I agree:
Icon sizes are fixed.
Font sizes are still wierd - some much too large some too small.
I can't see any pattern... (perhaps because I switch resolution between
1920*1200 and 1024*768 whenever I dock and undock).

[Bug 41427] Re: "slow keys" can turn on surreptitiously & cause confusion.

2008-03-31 Thread leshachek
I'm sure there was a reason for a developer to implement such feature as a slow
key for certain category of end-users.
Unfortunately it happened that the developer treated a headache by cutting the
head.
I had exact scenario that GKinal reported above, i.e. set up a laptop for my
wife with kubuntu and she was happlily working on it for a few days untill she
unknownly pressed OK when the system asked her to accept slow key feature. She
couldn't use the keyboard at all untill I figured out what actually caused of
the problem.
I'm aboslutely sure the other category of end-users also need to have a
developer attention, i.e. users who do not need this feature. I think I should
have a respect at least to know that this feature is active and giving you a
hint something like 'keep pressing a key for 3 seconds' if nothing happened on
your screen.

[Bug 209638] [NEW] Spoofing-vulnerability in pdns-recursor

2008-03-31 Thread Fridtjof Busse
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: pdns-recursor

http://doc.powerdns.com/powerdns-advisory-2008-01.html

It is recommended that all users of the PowerDNS Recursor upgrade to
3.1.5 as soon as practicable, while we simultaneously note that busy
servers are less susceptible to the attack, but not immune.

The vulnerability is present on all operating systems where the
behaviour of the libc random() function can be predicted based on its
past output. This includes at least all known versions of Linux, as well
as Microsoft Windows, and probably FreeBSD and Solaris.

The magnitude of this vulnerability depends on internal details of the
system random() generator. For Linux, the mathematics of the random
generator are complex, but well understood and Amit Klein has written
and published a proof of concept that can succesfully predict its output
after uninterrupted observation of 40-50 DNS queries.

Because the observation needs to be uninterrupted, busy PowerDNS
Recursor instances are harder to subvert - other data is highly likely
to be interleaved with traffic generated by an attacker.

Nevertheless, operators are urged to update at their earliest
convenience.

** Affects: pdns-recursor (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Visibility changed to: Public

Binary package hint: vlc

when playing streaming mp3's like:

vlc 'http://www.shoutcast.org/sbin/shoutcast-

the sound chirps and dropsout while logging:

mdb:470, lastbuf:410 skiping granule 0
