[Talks] Current smallest/thinnest Talks-compatible phone?

2011-02-18 Thread Barry G
Hi Folks, last time I checked, the smallest/thinnest keypad Talks-compatible
phone was the Nokia C5 - does anyone know if there's anything smaller/thinner
now available please? I'm looking for something that is less of a brick than
my N86, relatively speaking, to have as a second phone...

All the best,
Barry G

Hi Barry. I wouldn't of thought so as most qwerty keypad phones are
slightly bigger and wider than numeric keypad phones. My E5 doesn't
cause a bulge in my pocket and seems to be quite thin. It's much
thinner than the N86 and the N95 which are slide phones.

[Talks] Love my C5 but big problem with Calendar - can you help please?

2011-04-03 Thread Barry G
Hi folks, just gone to a new C5 from an N86 and love it, but am having a
massive problem with the calendar, and I rely heavily on it!

If I open a day and try to arrow down through appointments, it doesn't give the
time of the appointment and there seem to be lots of lines between some
appointments where it says nothing and I'm not sure whether I've done the last
appointment or not.

Can someone confirm whether the calendar works anywhere near as well as it does
on the N86 please? If so, have you got any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I
suspect that it could be either a setting that I have wrong in TALKS, or else
it's a setting in the calendar views etc.

Any help would be extremely gratefully received as I would love to continue
with the C5.

All the best,
Barry

[Talks] Further to Calendar, seems to be a bug!

2011-04-03 Thread Barry G
Firstly, I have tried all the font sizes in Nokia settings and none make any
difference.

Secondly, I should have been clearer about what it was about how the N86
calendar works that I like. When I opened calendar, I was able to arrow left
and right over the days, and a down or up arrow would move forward or back a
week, probably in a sort of grid layout. ##In my C5, this operation works
fine, but it also reads out a list of the appointments with the correct times,
which is not a problem.

In my N86, I could then press select on the day and it would open with a list
of the appointments and I could arrow down or up through them hearing the
appointment with the time, which is the critical bit for me. This is where I'm
having the no-time reading problem, as well as the blank lines issue. I need
this view so that I can quickly check my schedule and meetings, and so that I
can delete or reschedule them easily. Is this possible with the C5?

Secondly, and seems like a bug to me, I tried changing TALKS speak punctuation
to none, and as soon as I went into calendar and it reads out the list of
appointments for the day as in the sentence marked ## above, , TALKS simply
crashes after about the second appointment, and it did it consistently. I did
try moving to another day just in case it's one of those confounded letter
combinations that used to crash JAWS at one time!

Any thoughts would be gratefully received!

All the best,
Barry

Hi John, I did get there eventually, but thanks for coming back to me, it's

Hi!

I don't have much experience with Epocware's "Handy" series of products,
the only one I tried is Handy Weather (which is inaccessible and far too
expensive anyway). I do have some experience with Smartphoneware though,
so if you haven't tried it already, I'd like to suggest Best Safe:
http://store.ovi.com/content/2611
I haven't tried this particular app myself, so I'm not sure if it works
correctly, but other apps from this company work great. A demo can be
obtained from http://www.smartphoneware.com/ and an additional advantage
is this app can be bought for a temporary discount, so it's only $2 or
less.

You should try phone wallet I have used this for years and it's fully
talks compatible. you can trial it before you purchase it and it's
available through the blindsea web site.

http://www.blindsea.com
Upi cam create your own protected database or use the ones already there
or edit the fields of the ones already there. If you have to change
handsets they will give you a new code especially if you are visually
impaired.
I can send you the installer if you email me off list but you should find
it ok on blindsea.

Re: [Talks] Handy Safe or accessible alternative for Nokia C5?

2011-04-04 Thread Barry G
Hi Davy, thanks so much for this suggestion, it works fantastic on the C5
and, at one euro or whatever it is at the moment, it's virtually being given
away!

I think that Handy Safe is brilliant after trying it on my N86, but at £30+
it's a bit steep! I like the fact that there's a PC utility for Handy Safe
where you can create or update records and then they can be synchronised
with the phone, and I reckon that's the only benefit, certainly not worth
that much extra cash... I realise you can import and export from the C5
with Best Safe, but it's as a text file and I'll need to play with it a bit
if I'm to get my head round how to create one so that it imports to the
phone and displays properly...

All the best and, again, many thanks,
Barry

You need to select your phone first, but I don't think the C5 is listed.
However, I believe it's running S60v3, so there should normally not be a
problem. Here's a direct link to the page:

will try it later tonight when a sightie is around!

Hi!

I don't have much experience with Epocware's "Handy" series of products,
the only one I tried is Handy Weather (which is inaccessible and far too
expensive anyway). I do have some experience with Smartphoneware
though, so if you haven't tried it already, I'd like to suggest Best
Safe: http://store.ovi.com/content/2611
I haven't tried this particular app myself, so I'm not sure if it works
correctly, but other apps from this company work great. A demo can be
obtained from http://www.smartphoneware.com/ and an additional advantage
is this app can be bought for a temporary discount, so it's only $2 or
less.

Regards,
Davy

Hi folks, just tried to install both versions of Handy Safe on my C5

Have I done something wrong, or does anyone know of a secure, TALKS

[Talks] New version of Talks & OVI Maps - broken?

2011-08-14 Thread Barry G
Hi folks, has anyone tried the new version of the Talks software with OVI Maps?
It appears to be broken on my Nokia C5, latest firmware with the latest
version of Talks released this week but running the previous version of
Eloquence.

Could someone try it on your phone and confirm whether it's working for you or
not if you get a few minutes please? I haven't trawled through it very far,
but the route overview no longer reads for me, so I haven't actually been out
with it to find out if the keys that give other info about what's going on work
or not...

My Internet on the phone now works again, but one step forward, one back!

All the frustrated best,
Barry G

If you could tell us what version of maps it is? Also what firmware
version?

This helps for the firmware that you have may be the latest only for that
model phone and it would help others with that model of phone to know what
firmware version your talking about. The same goes with maps. If it is
v3.06

then I would not be surprised to see that it is broken.

Go in to installs or applications and arrow to Eloquence. Once on it press
Options and arrow to About and Select. When you know you will have to
press soft key one to get out of the About screen and them soft key 2 to

Re: [Talks] Latest talks and maps - the actual subject!

2011-08-17 Thread Barry G
Hi Marcus, do you know if it's just me or is TALKS with Nokia OVI Maps
broken with the latest version of TALKS? I posted my experience at the end
of last week but haven't seen any responses to confirm either way.

I am using a Nokia C5 with the latest phone and map firmware released about
6-7 weeks ago.

Any comments would be appreciated, it would be helpful to know if it's just
my setup or if it is a general issue.

Hi Bernard,

latest talks. I probably miss understood stephen when he was talking
about the old eloquence with the latest talks as I understood that
using the old eloquence with the latest talks prevented speech during
calls.

Just to clarify - this statement is essentially true, but it only
affects Symbian^3 phones. There, the new version of TALKS and the 16kHz
version of Eloquence are both absolutely required to get speech on a call.

On other phones, where 8/11kHz Eloquence was good enough before, you can
chose whichever Eloquence works best for you (either 123 or 125).

As said before, when switching Eloquence versions, I would always
suggest starting at a volume factor of 100% (in Audio Settings), and
only increase it gradually to find which amount of distortion at higher
factors is still acceptable to you.

ciao marcus

[Talks] Phone upgrade, any suggestions?

2012-01-08 Thread Barry G
Hi folks, my contract with O2 has just run out and I'm due an upgrade. I
currently have an N86 and a C5, both of which work fine at the moment, but
signed up for an iPhone 2 weeks ago, which I returned today as I found the
touch screen interface usable but extremely slow.

I am back to TALKS, happily, and wondered if anyone can suggest a current
high-end Nokia with a normal numeric keyboard?

I understand that the next version of TALKS will work with an upcoming version
of symbion, perhaps it is called Bell? Does anyone know if that will give
access to newer phones that offer worthwhile enhancements?

I rely heavily on the phone for my diary and would like to be able to synch it
with my work Outlook calendar, ideally online. Other than that, I do a bit of
internet browsing, mainly for news and weather, and a lot of texting. I would
like to be able to use push email too, but that is not a significant issue.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

All the best,
Barry G

[Talks] Help please, I made a boo-boo

2013-04-21 Thread Barry G
Hi Folks - here's your Sunday morning giggle on me...

I have a Nokia C5 with Talks but the screen is dead. Not normally a problem
to a blindie, but I went into the prog and disabled TALKS when I let my
daughter borrow it this morning. Now I can't get a sightie to go back in
and re-enable TALKS. Is there any key press or combination that will
override the disable and bring TALKS back on? Otherwise, it's now junk!

All the dumb best,

2013-04-21 Thread Barry G
Hi Eleanor, very many thanks for coming back to me on this but I'm afraid
that's a no go, the TALKS key followed by extended press of softkey 1
doesn't bring up the TALKS page, neither on my currently non-working C5 nor
on an older phone that will run in offline mode but not accept a SIM card.

When you tried it, had you disabled TALKS in the menu first? Mind you, if
you try that without sighted help about, you may end up temporarily in the
same boat as me so I would advise against it anyway!!!

All the best with thanksand a smile,
Barry

left as the phone faces you. It is just below the screen. Take a good 5
seconds of holding down the long press! Now you are in Talks. Now press the
options key, same top left key. This brings you in to Talks options. Use
your up arrow key 4 times and press select. Do let us know how you get on.
Incidentally curious, if your sighted daughter wanted to borrow it with a
blank screen, how did she manage?

Hi Folks - here's your Sunday morning giggle on me...

I have a Nokia C5 with Talks but the screen is dead. Not normally a problem
to a blindie, but I went into the prog and disabled TALKS when I let my
daughter borrow it this morning. Now I can't get a sightie to go back in
and re-enable TALKS. Is there any key press or combination that will
override the disable and bring TALKS back on? Otherwise, it's now junk!

All the dumb best,

Barry

Re: [Talks] Help please, I made a boo-boo

2013-04-21 Thread Barry G
Hi Eleanor, That sounds like a good idea; however, I had also thought of
just re-installing TALKS but, if my memory serves me correctly, I would need
to have a working screen to complete the install - is that right?

All the best with thanks,
Barry

Well Barry there is another screen reader which you could download and
install as demo and once speech is up and running on it go and enable Talks
and remove your demo. The other screen reader can be downloaded from the
blindsea website.

All the best with thanksand a smile,
Barry

Hi Stephen, excellent advice about the shortcut, wish I had thought of that
before!

All the best with many thanks,

If Talks is disabled! You can ot re-enable it by a key press. You must go
into the menu and then select Talks from there. Then you can enable it from
within the talks settings and it will be talking you through the Talks
settings. This is why you should do one of the following.
1. Move Talks so that it is at the top of bottom of your menu. This away you
can just go into the Menu and press Select or press Up arrow (list mode) and
then select to get into the Talks settings.
2. Assign a shortcut to Talks so that you can then press that shortcut to
get into the Talks settings.

Hi Eleanor, Yep, I live on the edge of the New Forest in England...
Following on from your other posting, how do you install to the memory card
and what's the advantage of that?

All the curious best,
Barry
