Re: [Talks] Talks and the best mobile combination.
There is no one phone that everyone would agree on. This is going to be a more personal choice than anything. It will depend on numerous factors such as how much you want to spend, what you want to use it for, what kind of keyboard/keypad you want, etc. Ultimately it is your choice as to what phone you think is best. - Original Message - From: To: "Talks Mailing List" Sent: Saturday, October 01, 2011 2:35 PM Subject: Re: [Talks] Talks and the best mobile combination. Re: [Talks] Talks and the best mobile combination.
Dear Brad, I just love Talks. It runs perfectly on my Nokia N79. Recently I damaged that phone and it cant be repaired. I bought a C5 from Nokia. But that has email problems with Talks which I discussed earlier. Now I cannot buy a N79 as Nokia does not make them any more. That is why I want to know which current model I should buy which will run with Talks! Price is not a limiting factor. But I find it impossible to use a Touch screen or a QWERTY keypad. Any suggestions? Noni :) -original message- Subject: Re: [Talks] Talks and the best mobile combination. Dear Steven, Please note my subject line. I am interested in knowing which phone I can use with Talks? My N79 is dead. I gotC5 but that is not compatible with Talks 5.21.3 So I wanted to know which phone is fully compatible? Web and emails? Nokia is not making Old models any more. I do not want a pre owned phone. Do you want a slider phone or a candy bar style? Is battery life important to you? Is the quality of the external speakers important? Do you prefer a flip phone? there are several things we would have to know to point you in a direction. - Original Message - From: To: "Talks Mailing List" Sent: Saturday, October 01, 2011 3:35 PM Subject: Re: [Talks] Talks and the best mobile combination. Re: [Talks] Talks and the best mobile combination.
Email is partial. You can view your emails. You can write and send. However viewing and downloading attachments is not supported. Also you cannot click on links that come in an email. You will have to forward the email, then copy the link and paste into your browser. If you can live with that then go get the N86. Only its not a very current model from Nokia. Has a gr8 camera though. Will make sense if you are buying the KNFB Reader as well. -original message- Subject: Re: [Talks] Talks and the best mobile combination. At present, to open and read with Talks a Word document using Quick Office 7, I open the document through File Manager. Talks will at this point only read the heading or first line of the document. Re: [Talks] N86: refresh library function
So, does this mean the library doesn't refresh? This could mean it's corrupted. If that's the case, I can send some tips of how to sort that out. I had to do it with my phone recently. In my case, though, the whole memory card was corrupted! :( Not good! I have had cards where it's just the music library that needed sorting, though. Re: [Talks] QWERTY keypad and Talks
Hi Noni, In my opinion, it's simply a matter of getting used to the keyboard. Many sighted folks look at the keyboard of their ordinary computer, yet people like us are testament to the fact that tactile familiarity is really the only necessity for effective typing. The same goes for the qwerty keyboard. In my case, it took me a few weeks to get used to the keyboard on my E71. The keys felt small, and I wasn't at all used to either the size or the layout. Factor in the foreign idea of typing exclusively with my thumbs and it all felt rather daunting. A year and a half on and I can now send texts or emails just about as quickly as my sighted, blackberry-using friends. I would suggest you take a look at someone's qwerty phone, either with Talks on training mode or with a sighted person on hand to answer questions about specific key positions. I'm afraid it's really the only way to know whether or not it's something you'll be able to get accustomed to. Re: [Talks] QWERTY keypad and Talks
Hi Noni, I'll answer both your queries in one email and hope others who may be more knowledgeable can chime in too. Yes I have heard of Oratio, but know nothing about it...so I can't really help there. As for predictive text, I used to use it all the time when I had the Nokia 6682, but I find it more of a hindrance than a help with a querty keyboard. I'd rather not have the phone anticipate my words and sentences when I can type them myself with greater precision and comparable speed. It was definitely a timesaver on the conventional keypad, but has the opposite effect for me with my current phone. Rather like the choice of keyboard, it's entirely a matter of personal preference. Re: [Talks] QWERTY keypad and Talks
They are excellent. I use my left index finger. Hold the phone in my right hand. Takes getting used to but I am reasonably fast. As for what sighted people. They look where they are going when walking about. A blind person uses different strategies. It is the same when using a phone. The E71 and E72 plus the E5 are all phones which do not have touch screens. The buttons are small but clearly marked to the touch. Each button is larger than a giant Braille dot so touch should not be a problem unless you have a medical problem such as Diabetes which impairs your sense of touch or unless you have exceptionally large fingers making it very clumbsy to touch very small objects with the pad of your finger. -original message- Subject: [Talks] QWERTY keypad and Talks From: m...@chopra.us Date: 02/10/2011 3:58 am Dear QWERTY Keypad Users, I note that many Talks users are using phones with full QWERTY keypad. As for me, I hold my E73 Mode with my left hand mainly, and type with my thumb on my left hand, and use multiple fingers to type with my right. Not sure where the habit developed, but hey. There you have it. As for predictive text, I never had it on, figuring that it was pointless. I type reasonably fast on my phone, and as there aren't multiple letters or punctuation assigned to a single button, it would probably be more of a hindrance than a help. I'm a thumb typer, 100%. I hold the phone vertically with the screen facing my body, brace the back with my fingers and just let my thumbs do all the work on the keypad. I was taught this position by a sighted qwerty user, and now that I'm used to it it feels very natural and easy. The little raised dot in the "G" helps me orient myself in the keypad and Is utterly invaluable.
