Re: [Talks] checking how many characters are in a message

2010-11-02 Thread Estelita

Hi Christopher,
I have done some expermentation on this dilemma and found an interesting
result!

By the way, I am using N86, with Talks and zooms V premium 5.00.3.
I asked my sighted husband to look at my phone's screen on the message area,
it displays 160. I wrote some lines, the display didn't change and Talks
still reads 160 1.
In my computer, I have a file consists of 33 words and character with spaces
is 192 long.

I wrote this whole file and when I'm done, I checked and it says 102 2!
I texted it to my husband and he got it with no problem.
My conclusion is, I can write long messages on my phone with no worries of
cutting short of the words, like most people usually do.

Cheers,

Estelita

Hmm, I'm stumped. I tried the same message, set my punctuation to none,
and I heard 140 1, with a little pause between the 140 and the 1. Talks
won't warn you when you get to the end of the message because you'll just
roll over into the next part of the message. For example, if I type a 180
character message then I'd hear 140(2).

I wonder if you're running into a bug. I know you said you were running
Talks 5.0, but was that 5.00.3 or 5.01.1? Also what phone and firmware are
you running? I assume the number of characters actually appears on the
screen. If you have any sighted help, you could see if the numbers are
counting down or not.

That's what you'll hear if your punctuation is set to none. If you
change your punctuation to all or some then you'll hear 160(1), that's
"160 left paren 1 right paren". This means you have 160 characters left
in the first part of of your text message.

In your earlier example, your text message was 10 characters long. I
wonder if it was saying 150(1) (That's with a five.) instead of 160(1)
(with a 6). I'd suggest giving it another try with a slightly longer
text message. See if you hear it roll over from 150 to 149.

You're probably right, but I do know Talks used to handle this
differently in older versions. For example, I remember when it would
announce the number of remaining characters after every character you
typed. 5.00.3 and 5.01.1 probably both handle it the same way though.
What does it say when you press Talks followed by the long press of
soft key 2 before you start typing anything? Maybe your text messages
start out with 170 characters instead of 160.

Are you saying that when you were typing in a message on your phone,
your sighted husband was saying the display was saying 160 and it wasn't
changing? If so, that sounds like a bug in the software on the phone. If
it's important to you, you may want to see if there's an update for your
phone.

Also, did you say that you entered a long message of around 192
characters and Talks told you you had 102(2) characters left? That
sounds like the character count is getting updated, although I'd expect
it to say 128(2).

Finally, are you saying that most people have to worry about sending
long messages? If so, that isn't the case any more. Most carriers and
text messaging programs will just concatinate your messages together to
create a longer message. That's why you're hearing things like 160(1)
and 102(2). The number in parenthesis indicates how many parts there are
to your message.

Hi Christopher,
Sorry, if I didn't explain properly to make you fully understand my last

I wrote few lines only when my husband said that the display still 160, and

punctuation.
When I wrote the 192 characters long text, I didn't ask my husband to look

So, I got the count down then, why it was 102 when the text was 192
characters, I'm not bother, as long as my message reaches to my recipient
with no problem.
If I mentioned of most people shortcuts their words when texting, because
that's how I receive as often. In fact, I did the same, thinking that I
only have limited characters to use.

My phone is working fine, so I don't need any updates as yet!
