Re: [RE-wrenches] I sent in my Wrench List dues, have you?

2024-09-30 Thread Michael Welch via RE-wrenches

Thanks so much to everyone who has chimed in and to all who have
supported the list with their optional dues.
It does my heart good to hear how much value the list has for you
all.
And, as you all know, I try hard to keep the list on topic. So with that
in mind, I'm going to close off any further dues talk so you all can get
back to wrenching.
As usual, any questions or concerns can be sent to me directly,
off-list.
Drake Chamberlin via RE-wrenches wrote at 10:10 AM 9/27/2024:

Hello All,

I know this is off-topic under list guidelines, but Michael said it was
OK to post.
Michael deserves our support for keeping The RE-Wrench List going for all
of these years. The discussions on the list have been important for
decades to the evolution of solar energy in the areas of technological
innovation, dealer support, and code development. Many industry leaders
have taken part in these discussions.
The information on the list is invaluable for putting the word out on
products that are useful and ones to be avoided. Help is often provided
in getting through to manufacturers that are sometimes elusive.
There are a lot of smart, experienced members on the Wrench List.
Technical advice provided in various posts often exceeds that provided by
product manufacturers. Getting the information needed can easily save us
a few hours of work or research, which can far exceed the cost of the
dues.
The Wrench List is one of the most important tools in my toolbox.
Hopefully other members of this list will understand its value and also
send in their dues. I know Michael says the dues are optional, but come
on…
The Wrench List rocks. It is an incredibly valuable business investment.
Let’s keep it going. The minimum suggested dues are only $50 per year. I
am sending significantly more.
Go to http://re-wrenches.org/ to
pay dues online or to find the mailing address for sending a
check.
Thanks, Wrenches, let’s all pony up!

I am not aware of any access to the DC side of the battery and Enphase did not
offer this as an option.
We did briefly discuss their future product line (10c) with built in array and

Thx Wayne.

Curious, I guess they are in a sense AC batteries, as there is no way to access
them for DC jump charge?

And I guess that is the same with Tesla? In that there is not way to access
the battery, or they didn’t figure you’d actually have a true black start?

thanks for the info.

on long enough (300+ seconds) for any non-IQ8 micros to energize. The battery
will attempt multiple times, but if there is a load, (such as a well pump) the
draw from the load will essentially prohibit the batteries from energizing the
micros long enough to engage and produce. The only solution is to have a load
controller or turn off all loads once the power goes out. Otherwise, during
these "attempts to turn on" power in the house will momentarily turn on and
back off and potentially drain the batteries down to lower than the point of
which they can even attempt to restart. I spoke at length with Enphase upper
engineering (not tech support) about this today. They now know that most of the
tech support staff does not know this important information.

Once the batteries are dead, they are very difficult if not impossible to jump
start with a generator. At the recommendation of tech support we tried multiple
times with the "approved" inverter generator which ultimatly just wasted our
time. Even though the controller/switch will accept the gen power and pass the
energy to the loads, it will not energize the combiner or batteries. If your
goal is to have an autonomous system with Enphase, it's only going to happen
with the IQ8's (at this point).

This is a significant issue with retrofitting older systems.

By the way:

Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarEdge Battery question

2024-09-30 Thread Garrison via RE-wrenches
Hi Jason,On a recent install 2 of 3 new batteries had a low SOE and failed the self test. This made sense as part of the self test is discharging the battery, which you wouldn’t want to do if the batteries are depleted. Anyway, the low SOE batteries also had trouble “associating” with the inverter and were not charging as a result. In the set app > device manager it took a few tries but eventually they “associated” and started charging and passed the self test. Not sure if that’s the issue here, but might be a place to start.I agree with Dana that support probably won’t help you if you are not certified just fyi. Part of the certification training does walk you through the SetApp configuration so is actually helpful.Good luck.Garrison RiegelCelestar SolarOn Sep 30, 2024, at 6:00 PM, Dana Orzel via RE-wrenches wrote:

Re: [RE-wrenches] SunPower Warranty and Monitoring

2024-09-30 Thread Dave Tedeyan via RE-wrenches
August,

When did you talk to Enphase about monitoring the Sunpower SolarBridge
micros? It sounds like this whole thing was dropped in their lap about a
month ago, and they are still working out the kinks. I talked to them again
today, and I was told that it is possible to monitor the -C and -D micros.
If you called before last week, they might not have had that sorted out
yet. I was also told that they will be providing warranty support for the
panels themselves as well, although I gather that the details are still a
bit fuzzy. I asked about the arc fault retrofits, and it sounded like they
planned on supporting that, but again, I don't think the details are fully
worked out yet.

As of now if you have an existing site with both Sunpower and Enphase, the
existing Enphase Gateway cannot be made to monitor the Sunpower panels (at
least yet). But there might be a chance that if you are adding Enphase to
an existing Sunpower system, you might be able to get one of the specially
programmed Gateways from the beginning. Those will be able to monitor both
the Enphase and the Sunpower equipment.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: [RE-wrenches] SunPower Warranty and Monitoring

2024-09-30 Thread August Goers via RE-wrenches
Hi Dave -

Thanks for following up on this. I spoke with Parker in the sales
department just last Friday 9/27. I explained that I had heard that
monitoring type C and D SolarBridge with Enphase equipment was possible,
but he said there was no way. That said, I think he was just not up to
speed yet - we called tech support today and were told the same as you
reported, that it is possible to monitor the type C and D micros with
Enphase monitoring equipment.

We also confirmed with Enphase tech support that SunPower modules
with IQ7XS micros should be compatible with the Enphase IQ Gateway or
Combiner 5. Those micros were paired with the smaller 96 cell modules like
the X22-360.

Clearly there are a lot of nuances to all of the possibilities, so I'm
happy that we're able to chat about it here on Wrenches. I'm also looking
forward to receiving more documentation from Enphase as they sort this all
out.

 Hi All,

I talked to Enphase recently about this. They will be providing
warranty support at least for Sunpower's microinverters. They do not know
how long Sunpower's monitoring will continue to work. But they have figured
out a way to use their Gateway to monitor Sunpower's microinverters, even
the older -C and -D micros. Currently the customer will need to pay a flat
fee of $699 and Enphase will send them the equipment and then schedule one
of their techs to come install it. It sounds like it involves some
reprogramming of the equipment on site.

Then once they can monitor the system, they can provide warranty
support. People should call Enphase at 510-945-6752 in order to get the
 process started.

 Cheers,
 Dave

[RE-wrenches] Enphase Batteries and IQ7+ Won't Restart

2024-09-30 Thread Wayne Irwin via RE-wrenches
Hurricane Helene has taught us the hard way that Enphase batteries with
anything other than IQ8's won't restart.
The issue is that when the batteries try to restart (at the non-programmable
time of 9:AM) if there are any significant loads, the batteries will not stay
on long enough (300+ seconds) for any non-IQ8 micros to energize. The battery
will attempt multiple times, but if there is a load, (such as a well pump) the
draw from the load will essentially prohibit the batteries from energizing the
micros long enough to engage and produce.

By the way:
- We've received numerous desperate calls from (orphaned) Powerwall owners
whose systems also won't turn back on.
- ALL of our Outback systems were issue free.

I hope this helps some of you. Good Luck out there!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase Batteries and IQ7+ Won't Restart

2024-09-30 Thread jay via RE-wrenches
Thx Wayne.

Curious, I guess they are in a sense AC batteries, as there is no way to access
them for DC jump charge?

And I guess that is the same with Tesla? In that there is not way to access
the battery, or they didn’t figure you’d actually have a true black start?

thanks for the info.

[RE-wrenches] SolarEdge Battery question

2024-09-30 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
For you SolarEdge pros...

I have a new client with dual 7.6kW Home Hub inverters and single SolarEdge
battery. They have been replacing inverters left and right under warranty,
but now have at least one working with the help of a local electrician
friend. I helped them swap it in the monitoring portal remotely because
SolarEdge refused to help them. They are stumped now and can't get the
battery to charge with solar, so I'm being brought in for an on-site
diagnostic. SolarEdge is not my strong suit. I have replaced many HD Waves,
but never worked with their batteries, which are not popular here. Before I
go out on Thursday I was hoping to do some research and go in with some
better knowledge.

The battery SOE is 0.17% according to the owners SetApp. The self test
fails due to the low SOE, and the owner can't get the inverter set up to
charge the battery as a result.

Is there a process for dealing with very low SOE and how can I get this
thing charging from the one good inverter?
