[RE-wrenches] Generator Controlled Mini Grid

2013-02-08 Thread Drake
A potential customer is interested in a mini grid, set up by a
generator, to connect his array to.

Some years back, on this list, an article was linked about a
community with a central generator that had PV input to the generator
supplied, local grid, using electronic controls.

Has any progress been made in this technology? Does anyone have a
link to the electronic control equipment or any other relevant information?

Thanks,

Drake

Re: [RE-wrenches] Accessibility of Equipment on Roof was Are PV Systems Mechanical Equipment?

2013-02-08 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Oh, yes - that is a great application for the MNPV-AC. I didn't mean to
imply there isn't a good use for them. In this particular instance the
three MVPV-AC's are really subcombiners that get all get tied together in
another subpanel at ground level. They really were not necessary, but made
it more convenient and cost effective.

It's just interesting how Midnite advertises that they can be mounted as
flat as a 3:12 pitch. What application would allow this mounting angle
where it is still readily accessible? The spec/advertising seems to imply
that these can be roof mounted in an AC string combining application.

The Soladeck combiner with fuses would appear to be non-code compliant in
any situation. I would love for someone to refute that in a convincing way
given the access requirements in 240.24(A).

2013-02-08 Thread jay peltz
Hi jason,

3 questions,
I can't find the MNPV-AC in midnites price list, is this something custom or
just new?
And
if you don't need breakers why not just do a junction box on the roof.
and
the inspectors I've had have requested a disconnecting means on the roof or
visible from the roof. So I've done the enphase suggested switches on the
roof, but no overcurrent. It doesn't appear that is a requirement from your
inspector?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Accessibility of Equipment on Roof was Are PV Systems Mechanical Equipment?

2013-02-08 Thread Kent Osterberg

Jason,

It seems to me that two of the exceptions in 240.24 may apply to your
situation. Most significantly (4) For overcurrent devices adjacent to
utilization equipment that they supply, access shall be permitted to be
by portable means. Thus using a latter to access the ac combiner on the
roof should be permitted. There should also be an accessible disconnect
elsewhere (at the panel feeding the combiner for instance.) That (may)
makes the breakers in the ac combiner supplementary and thus they
wouldn't have to be accessible.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Accessibility of Equipment on Roof was Are PV Systems Mechanical Equipment?

2013-02-08 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Yeah, normally it would have been our practice to use a j-box and bring
down three strings. In this case it made more sense to combine strings on
the roof and just bring down a single circuit in a single conduit. Long
story... long wire run... probably bad planning in hindsight.

The MNPV6-AC is a new product with a disconnect on the front exterior and
up to six breakers on a DIN rail that you can combine with bus bars that
they supply. It is specifically for combining AC strings. I think it's
rated for 120A per pole. I'm impressed with the units. It makes a great
residential Enphase string combiner.

List price is $239.00 and it's on their site as the last item here:
http://www.midnitesolar.com/products.php?menuItem=products&productCat_ID=34&productCatName=PV%20Disconnecting%20Combiners%20-Not%20Birdhouse%20Compatible

You are right - jurisdictions around here do not require disconnects on the
roof. The AC connectors on the inverters suffice. We normally just do a
j-box and transition to THWN. We've been using TC-ER to extend the trunk
lines and just use one j-box with all circuits running down a single
conduit to whatever combiner we need or to the load center for smaller
systems. No utility discos <10kW here. Yay!

[RE-wrenches] Insulated cabinet source

2013-02-08 Thread Kirk
Hello,
I'm looking to source insulated cabinets, relatively large to house -3- Fronius
5 Kw inverters. They only have a low operating temp spec of -4F. I plan to
supply min heat using a small resistive element. Long story, but inverters have
to be mounted at the array and I must use Fronius. This is part of an OEM
module evaluation in cold climates. Permitting does not allow building a shed.
Thanks.

Kirk,

A few years ago Jeff Randal at DPW made us a nice cabinet for a single
Fronius inverter. It was not insulated. Maybe they could customize a unit to
your specs?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Snow guards for pitched roof arrays?

2013-02-08 Thread Garrison Riegel
Have you considered installing a flashing like the EcoFasten GF-1, lagging
the L-foot to the rafter, and then spanning the L-feet with some AL angle?
We use flashings similarly for supporting conduit on roofs, which works very
well.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Alarm start stop alarm

2013-02-08 Thread Chris Mason
Easy peasy.
The Outback provides 12V to power a relay for the AGS. Change the relay to
DPST so you have additional contacts to switch a siren
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Omron-Electronics/G4W-2214P-US-HP-DC12/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMs8I5ltipPMAFAts%252bPMgw13

or,
Run a small 12V siren from the AUX out of the Outback -
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/PUI-Audio/AW-10FR-NSVC/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMsK322k1rNFfen7eDOmPri08xfV7k%252bSSd4%3d

or,
Run an AC power siren off the generator output.

or,
If the generator has a load management module, use that to provide
switching.

Re: [RE-wrenches] getting PV modules up to the roof

2013-02-08 Thread William Miller

Eric:

I'd be careful about attaching a large object to the back of anyone
climbing a ladder. You are attaching a sail to your climber and if a gust
comes up there is no easy way to shed a back pack while holding on for dear
life.

This reminds me of a product idea I had with a friend who does canvas
sewing for boat covers and such.

How about this?:A heavy-duty canvas bag for carrying PV modules, with
backpack straps and D-rings in the corners? With a module pack bag,
installers could climb a ladder with both hands while the module is
securely on their back, Or it could also provide an easy way to tie on a
rope and haul them up, or secure them on a sloped roof before
installation. How many installers would be interested in something like
that?? How much would you be willing to pay for it?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Generator Controlled Mini Grid

2013-02-08 Thread Kevin Pegg
Hi Drake,

SMA has very good solutions for this. Does this out of the box without a bunch
of custom control systems. I have put a few systems in like this, but the
renewables not yet online (generator / battery now). If you google Isle of Eig
you will find some info on what they have done there.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Generator Controlled Mini Grid

A potential customer is interested in a mini grid, set up by a
generator, to connect his array to.

Some years back, on this list, an article was linked about a
community with a central generator that had PV input to the generator
supplied, local grid, using electronic controls.

Has any progress been made in this technology? Does anyone have a
link to the electronic control equipment or any other relevant information?

Thanks,
