[RBW] FS: 52cm Bombadil Complete

2011-03-30 Thread williwoods
Man this is really tough, not at all what I want to do, I love this
Bike.

I have some serious unexpected expenses that have forced me to make
some tough decisions. Hence this is going up for sale.

I am the 3rd Owner of this Frame, Fork and Wheels. They were barely
used by the first owner and the 2nd owner never even finished building
it back up, so practically speaking I am the 2nd owner to ride the
bike, although it looks like the 1st owner maybe put a 100 miles on
it. It still looks brand new. The only evidence of wear when I got it
was the brake surface on the rims, they had very light marks.

Condition is a solid 9/10 on the frame and fork. No scratches, dents
or anything else to be worried about.

The Specialized/Nitto Dirt Drop Stem is the only part on the bike that
has scuffs and a scratch. If it bothers you get a new stem.

Also the fenders are a little less than perfect with a few dents and 2
extra holes drilled for a front rack. I covered the holes with Foil
Tape, looks about as good as one could hope, I never got around to
buying a front rack like I had planned.

Everything else on the Bike has maybe 500 or so miles on it from new.
Wheels are true and no hops. Tires have plenty of life left although I
did buy them 2nd hand.

Frame and Fork: 52cm Bombadil clear over raw color Twined and
Shellac'd chainstay.
Headset: Cane Creek Classic 100 1"
Cages: Nitto R and Electra/Nitto knockoff cage
Seatpost: Nitto Lugged
Saddle: Brooks B-17 Special
Stem: Specialized/Nitto Dirt Drop
Bars: Sycip Singles Bar
Grips/bartape: Rivendell Portuguese Cork and Neubaums tape, twined
with 5 coats of Shellac
Levers: Paul cantilever
Shifters: Shimano 8 speed and Paul mounts mounted upside down.
Cables & Housing: Shimano Dura Ace
Brakes: Shimano XT High Profile and VO Hangers
Brake Pads: Kool Stop Salmon
Front Der: Shimano Ultegra
Rear Der: Shimano Ultegra High normal
Cassette: Shimano 12-26
Cranks: Sugino XD2 triple 175mm 24/39/43 I also have a Sugino 40,
never got the rings I really wanted easy fix.
Pedals: Suntour Superbe Pro.
Toe Clips: MKS L Half clips with leather.
Wheels: 650B Synergy laced to LX hubs, built by Rich.
Tires: 650B 40 mm Fatty Rumpkins
Fenders: VO Zeppelin 55mm

I am asking $2800 Shipping will be extra but I would hope we can
workout local pickup.

I would like Paypal or a money order.

I am in 90232

[RBW] Re: FS: 52cm Bombadil Frame & Fork

2011-04-20 Thread williwoods
Decided to part with the Frame & Fork only at this point. I may decide
to sell some of the parts after the FF sells. Will not include
headset.

This thing is clean.

$1650 Shipped in the lower 48, via UPS.

I really need the $$, help me out. My plan is to get back on my feet
and eventually buy another FF, so I can build it back similar.

[RBW] FS: Pashley Tube Rider double scoop complete bike

2011-04-22 Thread williwoods
I have this gorgeous Pashley Tube Rider Double Scoop in Pink/
Tourquoise

Upgrades include: Nitto Periscopa stem, Nitto bars, mks touring
pedals, shimano brake levers, cork grips, a suntour thumbshifter used
in friction mode, and basket.

I have the original twist shifter and grips as well as the original
beach cruiser style bars. All will be included.

This was the last one imported from the uk back in '10. I am not sure
if these are available anymore state-side from a pashley dealer. I was
told last year that the us distributer wasn't importing them anymore.

perfect shape not a blemish to be found. no dents cracks etc.
there are scuff marks here and there on the pedals and crank arms,
just the normal wear. always stored indoors ridden about 1000 miles.
wheels are true, everything works perfect. My wife doesnt really ride
it much anymore, since she got a go-fast bike.

$625 shipped in the lower 48.

perfect town bike.

[RBW] FS: Pashley Tube Rider Complete Bike, new post

2011-05-05 Thread williwoods
I have this gorgeous Pashley Tube Rider Double Scoop in Pink/
Tourquoise

Upgrades include: Nitto Periscopa stem, Nitto bars, mks touring
pedals, shimano brake levers, cork grips, a suntour thumbshifter used
in friction mode, and basket.

I have the original twist shifter and grips as well as the original
beach cruiser style bars. All will be included.

This was the last one imported from the uk back in '10. I am not sure
if these are available anymore state-side from a pashley dealer. I
was
told last year that the us distributer wasn't importing them anymore.
perfect shape not a blemish to be found. no dents cracks etc.
there are scuff marks here and there on the pedals and crank arms,
just the normal wear. always stored indoors ridden about 1000 miles.

wheels are true, everything works perfect. My wife doesnt really ride
it much anymore, since she got a go-fast bike.

$550 Bike only, shipping is extra, I got a quote on shipping via ups/
fedex says it will be around $80 to the east coast (depending on
location could be cheaper), local pickup is also an option.

perfect town bike.

[RBW] FS: 52cm Bombadil Complete or Frame & Fork

2011-05-12 Thread williwoods
Still on the chopping block unfortunately

I am the 3rd Owner of this Frame, Fork and Wheels. They were barely
used by the first owner and the 2nd owner never even finished
building
it back up, so practically speaking I am the 2nd owner to ride the
bike, although it looks like the 1st owner maybe put a 100 miles on
it. It still looks brand new. The only evidence of wear when I got it
was the brake surface on the rims, they had very light marks.
Condition is a solid 9/10 on the frame and fork. No scratches, dents
or anything else to be worried about. Like new for real, consider that
with my asking price.

Tires have plenty of life left although
I
did buy them 2nd hand.

Frame and Fork: 52cm Bombadil clear over raw color Twined and
Shellac'd chainstay.
Headset: Cane Creek Classic 100 1"
Cages: Nitto R and Electra/Nitto knockoff cage
Seatpost: Nitto Lugged
Saddle: Brooks B-17 Special
Stem: Specialized/Nitto Dirt Drop
Bars: Sycip Singles Bar
Grips/bartape: Generic Cork and Neubaums tape, twined (recently
swapped to generic Cork grips)
with 5 coats of Shellac
Levers: Paul cantilever
Shifters: Shimano 8 speed and Paul mounts mounted upside down.
(recently switched to silver mounts)
Cables & Housing: Shimano Dura Ace
Brakes: Shimano XT High Profile and VO Hangers
Brake Pads: Kool Stop Salmon
Front Der: Shimano Ultegra
Rear Der: Shimano Ultegra High normal
Cassette: Shimano 12-26
Cranks: Sugino XD2 triple 175mm 24/39/43 I also have a Sugino 40,
never got the rings I really wanted easy fix.
Pedals: Suntour Superbe Pro.
Toe Clips: MKS L Half clips with leather.
Wheels: 650B Synergy laced to LX hubs, built by Rich.
Tires: 650B 40 mm Fatty Rumpkins
Fenders: VO Zeppelin 55mm

I am asking:

$2200 Complete ($2000 If you can pay today or Friday after Friday it
will be back up to $2200)

$1250 for frame and fork ($1100 if you can pay today or Friday after
Friday it goes back to $1250)

Shipping will be extra but I would hope we can
workout local pickup.

I would like Paypal or a money order.
I am in 90232

[RBW] Re: How to remove black anodizing from aluminum handlebars?

2011-05-17 Thread williwoods
Very easy...Draino liquid gel. takes about 30 minutes to soak and
then hose it off. You dont want to let it soak more than an hour or 2
though. I did this to a black ano chainring and it looked factory
matte silver when I was done. I had to gently scrub it a little and
did it in 3 passes, soak, rinse/scrub, rinse, dry repeat. If you do it
right they will look factory finished.

You wont be able to do this with the bars but for smaller parts I used
a ziplock freezer bag to soak the chainring.

good luck

[RBW] Re: How to remove black anodizing from aluminum handlebars?

2011-05-18 Thread williwoods
I doubt that short (30minute) dips would do anything bad. I have never
had a problem with pitting even after an hour soaking in draino gel.
While I have never done handlebars, I have done chainrings, brake
levers, cranksets and frames, etc..never had a problem. I wouldn't
hesitate doing a handlebar myself. That is not to say that I am an
expert or that you shouldn't be careful. Oven cleaner is another
story, I have seen that eat at the surface of aluminum after an hour.
Wasn't pretty, and turned the part black (black came off if you
scrubbed it gently)

I have had discussions with smarter people than me about this stuff
and the consensus was that the draino gel isn't strong enough to cause
issues for the short durations we are soaking our parts. Still if its
your first time maybe try a junk part and see for yourself. I really
don't think its an issue, but am happy to be corrected by someone with
experience with this sort of thing.

A separate issue: I have never had a problem with the finish over a
long period of time due to oxidation, although I believe that is an
issue, maybe it doesn't show itself for 10 years or more. I just
haven't seen it pop up.

[RBW] Re: How to remove black anodizing from aluminum handlebars?

2011-05-18 Thread williwoods
One more point I should clarify in my instructions: when you dip the
part check on it every 10 minutes. you may find that you only need the
part in there for 20 minutes or even less before you pull it out to
rinse the first time, if you have scrubby brush you can scrub the part
gently and see the finish come off even while its soaking in the
draino, that will speed the process up a little. I am not sure how
even the finish will be if you can't dip the whole bar all at once,
but wouldn't be a big deal if your wrapping most of it in tape
eventually.

Cyclotourist - give us your report if you do your bars.

Thanks guys for the tips...

I am familiar with de-anoing parts but thought it would be a real
shame to remove the anodizing if someone really needs black but only
has silver.

I suppose I could buy silver and then sell too.. oh well was just
looking for the easy way.

[RBW] Custom Stem? Who makes a worthy one for my Bombadil

2010-11-22 Thread williwoods
Hey guys. So I am having a bit of a dilema. Been riding my Bullmoose
bars all week and my hands just arent agreeing with these.

I am going to run either Porteur bars or Albatross or something
similar with not a whole lot of rise not drop bars.

There arent a whole lot of options these days as far as stems go. I
believe what I want is a stem that has a bit of rise to it. This way I
dont need to run a technomic raised all the way. I really like the
Nitto Lugged stems and have thought about running a threadless Nitto
with a Quill adapter. But that seems kinda silly. Another option I saw
that I really liked was the Nitto Reversable stem but it looks like
the only ones around are 60mm and those are $130..not that bad really
but I think I need at least an 80mm, man these are so cool. Wish I
could find an old Diamond Back MTB that had a similar stem stock on em
also a nitto made item.

I know about the Nitto Dirt Drop stems but honestly I find them a bit
uglyis that silly of me?

So the last thing I am contemplating is a Custom stem. If I get a
custom stem made I would like to get something made that is similar to
a lugged nitto, something that will match the personality of my frame
and lugged seatpost I have.

Any Ideas?

[RBW] Re: 47 cm Atlantis finds new home

2010-11-22 Thread williwoods
I almost bought this bike just cause the price seemed soo right. It
would have been a bit small for my wife, I would have just flipped the
frame and bought a correct sized one. Glad I held off cause seems like
it worked out perfect for you.

It was crazy that it was on CL for so long at that crazy price.
Everytime she posted it I had to hold back from emailing her and
setting up the buy.

[RBW] Re: My first new Rivendell (ok Hillborne)

2010-11-29 Thread williwoods
I have to disagree with some of the statements.

V-brakes are just easier not to screw up during setup (fewer
adjustments, fewer things to setup wrong), thats really the only major
advantage, there is a small leverage benefit but canti's have better
modulation in general.

If you setup Canti's properly and run the right brake pads and proper
short pull levers they will stop as well as any cable actuated rim
brake will maybe even as good as cable discs. I have bikes that run
Canti's that you can lock up the wheels with 1 finger. I have also
used V-brakes that sucked.

The trick is older Canti's can be a pain to setup right, Im talking XT
cantilever brakes here or similar. Or really any kind that uses the
plain non-threaded post mount brake pads, except the 90's Avid
Cantilever brakes those are the best for setup ever. Most of it is
about geometry though. You have to have the Straddle cable setup right
and then have to have the brake pads hitting the rim at 90 degrees and
toed in, most of the poorly performing Canti brakes are not adjusted
to the correct geometry. Proper setup of Canti Brakes is a bit of a
lost art these days.

Nowadays the Tektro CR720 Cantilever Brakes are just about as easy to
setup as V brakes, mostly due to the fact that they use regular V-
brake style brake pads. The only thing more fiddly on these is setting
up the straddle cable correctly. The Pauls would also be just as easy
to setup right, or again any canti brake that uses the threaded V
brake brake pads.

anyway thats my 2 cents.

I also like the look of those bars. I just got a pair of the Sycip
Singles Bars to try out though.

Lee- no worries it ended up working out fine as I really wanted a
canti mount frame anyway, which I found the next week. That is
fantastic that the purchase of the bike has created another
enthusiastic cyclist!

[RBW] FS: Bullmoose bars, Canti Brakes, Levers, Stems, Cassette, Drop Bolts, Stronglight and more...

2010-12-05 Thread williwoods
My first for sale post here, but I have sold many items on other
websites, I hate ebay.

Anyway the prices are not shipped but I am very reasonable, shipping
for most items is only $5 if its under a pound and is a relatively
small item. The Bullmoose bars will be $14 to ship anything else will
be cheaper for shipping obviously. If you buy multiple items I will
give a discount in the total price cause I like to make sure you are
stoked.

I will take paypal for payments and local pickup is fine if you are in
the Los Angeles area.

here is the list:

Stronglight 49D cranks
skipooth ring.

170mm.

this is a very clean crankset,

$80

World Class Ti BB

One of the cups is mismatched but will work fine. maybe you have a cup
you can use many will fit.

Spins super smooth

$25

Shimano 36 ring 110 bolt spacing

$5

nice quality generic quill stem 1 " 115x5 degree 25.4

$15

Bontrager recessed bolt stem with gusset

1inch quill 110mm

$35

LX front der. in great shape. 28.6mm top pull. bottom swing.

$15

Campy Mirage triple front der. 28.6mm bottom pull used for a few
miles.

$20

XT BB UN 72 in great shape. spins like butter.

68mm x 107mm

$15

Shimano BB UN 73 in great shape used a few time. Spins like butter.

68mm x 115mm (need to double check spindle length)

$15

Headset brake hanger 1 inch

$3

Shimano M-750 NOS rear hub. 32 hole.

$25

Sram 850 8 speed 11-32 cassette. Used once and replaced. Essentially
brand new.

$15

Tektro CR720 cantilever brakes

very gently used bought here a few weeks ago. Logo has been removed
without marring finish in any way.

$35

Tektro R200 brake levers

very gently used bought here a few weeks ago. small blemish on one of
the levers but not really noticeable. logo has been removed without
marring finish of the levers.

$15

Velo Orange Grand Cru MK1 brakes.

Used a few times with different brakepads. Brakepads have never seen a
rim. I am not including the red straddle hanger but am including the
shimano branded ones pictured. Sorry but I am using the ones the came
with the brakes. Brakes are in perfect condition.

$25

Nitto Bullmoose Bar raw finish 150mm extension.

Finish is in good shape (they are raw with clear LOL), There are a few
very minor normal blems from mounting brake levers and shifters etc...

I got these when I bought my Bombadil 2nd hand. They just didnt work
for me and I have found bars that work much better for me. I cant
imagine using these again even though I would like to keep em for a
just in case scenario, but realistically I need to make room.

$90

Campy Drop bolts so you can mount 700c wheels on a 27 inch frame with
standard reach center pivot brakes. Finish is flawless campy finish.

These are very hard to find, and I paid more for them than I am
selling them for.

$80

Shimano BL-R550-R brake levers

Used but in very good condition, shellac stains where grips would be
butted up against.

$20

Sugino Chainguard

came off my quickbeam crankset used gently.

$10

Caramba anti-noodles

$15

Travel agent

used $10

for pics and other misc items

If my price is silly feel free to make offers but I do my best to make
sure the prices are reasonable from the get go.

nah its just a little shelf wear no scratches. It was laced up to a
NOS wheelset. I wanted the rims so I just unlaced them and put the hub
on a shelf. The front hub is not available though.

Guranteed to be unused and I didnt see scratches on the hub I just
checked it again. if your not happy I would be fine with giving your $
$ back.

yup I confirm it would not make the bend, the Portuguese cork grips

[RBW] WTT: Paul V brake levers trade for a front rack or 650b 50/52mm alloy fenders

2010-12-14 Thread williwoods

Basically I need to finish my bombadil and need fenders a front rack
and some bags.

I have:

Paul V brake levers in silver 22.2 clamps diameter. Barely used
slightly older model.

I also have a 32 hole rear Bullseye hub in the patriot colors.

Or I also have a pair of MKS touring pedals with soma clips and
leather straps.

and I have some other misc items.

What I want:

I need a Nitto front rack like a m-12 or porteur rack or ? I am
running canti brakes so no marks racks.

I am also looking for a pair of fenders like hammered Hanjo's 650b
50mm or 52mm or maybe something else that is classy.

I would also trade for Sackville small trunksack. or ?

reply off list and I can send pics if you have something to trade I
will need to see pics unless you are local.

ok I guess a marks rack would work as long as it has those mounting

I vote for option #2 that would seem like the most elegant solution.

I have never seen a setup that used 1 1/8th fork with a 1" quill stem,

unless your married to the fork I would use the King devolution, I
guess it comes down to which is more important to you, the existing
fork or the bullmoose bars.

There is a new option on the horizon.

Yesterday I was in a bikeshop that sells cruisers and town/commuter
bikes. They carry all the Electra bikes and as part of the Ticino line
of bikes they make now, have released a copy of the Nitto Touring
Cage, I bought one for $20 and its an identical copy of the nitto
cage. and for $20 I thought what the hell. They call it their ticino
tourist cage.

Its a nice option these days.

you guys should check out Electra's website for the whole range of
components from the Tourist line. TA style cranks, TA style pedals, C-
Record style hubs. and a lot more. Nice looking stuff, just not sure
of the durability factor.

perfect copy of the Nitto cage. and a great substitute if you cant

for me this is largely what I couldn't put into words earlier.

I have been one of those 'ride as fast as you can' and 'impress
buddies with fancy gear' types in the past. I took several years off
of serious riding, then picked up my Bombadil.

I have been converted.

im no longer in a big hurry and am now focused on looking around,
smelling the roses, enjoying the ride and trying my best not be a
nuisance to those around me. I guess I really drank the Rivendell
koolaid, and am happier and having more fun than I have ever had that
I can remember since being a kid. Slowing down and accepting that im
not a racer dude was key.

Thanks GP.

[RBW] New pictures of my Bombadil

2011-01-17 Thread williwoods
Hey Guys,

Here are some updated pics of my Bombadil after much tinkering,
experimenting and of course plenty of saddle time. Everything
functions wonderfully.

Swapped out the Bullmoose bars for these Sycip Singles Bar, found my
old Specialized branded Dirtdrop stem. This bar is so much more
versatile and comfortable than the Bullmoose bars I could never get my
hands comy on them, I figure it had to do with the fixed rear-upward
angle. As you can see I have these bars rear-downward which feels much
more natural. Decided I would run the thumbshifters under the bar so I
would have more hand positions, they function near perfect except when
I am trying to shift into the lowest gear in the rear its a little
awkward but im used to it now and doable just a little stretch to do
it. Of course now the rear shifter is now on the left and the front on
the right, my brain doesnt have a preference, im totally fine with it.
I then added the orange tape (yellow would have been better) and
shellacked and twined the whole thing together its about 4/5 coats of
shellac. Also twined the chainstay and shellacked that too.

Added the Suntour Superbe pedals and they are much better to me than
the MKS touring pedals I had.

Swapped the Quasi-Moto tires for the Fatty Rumpkins since im not
riding in the dirt and was planning on fenders which are the VO
Zeppelin model that are used but not too abused. The fenders had
several holes from the previous owner that I covered up with Foil
tape, I also used a small strip on the seatpost to remind me of my
usual saddle height.

You can also see that I now have one of the Nitto R cages and a
Electra Ticino cage, they look exactly the same.

My favorite mod was running the Bell on the exposed threads of the
Canti brake hanger. Its a little forward of where you traditionally
would run it but I can reach my finger easily to the striker which is
pointing up, the position keeps it out of the way which I like.

I also had to swap out the headset which was pitted out from being run
loose, the new headset is one of the really awesome Cane Creek 100
threaded units which are I think even nicer than a Chris King.

I was also running the VO 1st gen brakes but got tired of them cause
there was no toe-in adjustment and no spring adjustment. They stopped
great but squeeled like crazy and one side of the brke arm on the
front always ran too close to the rim. These Shimano brakes are pretty
fiddly but I really appreciate the adjustments and was able to get
them set-up perfectly.

And last but not least I bought a pair of the Paul brake levers cause
they are so sexy.

The only thing I need now is a front rack, then the build will be
complete. I still havent figured out which one I want. Kinda like the
VO porteur rack, but im not settled on that yet. Oh yeah then I need
bagsit never ends, ah the fun.

Other upgrades I would like to do: Paul brakes, Swap out the hubs for
White industries or I have some 8spd DuraAce hubs that I could respace
to 135mm. Maybe I should just get some rims and build a second set of
wheels...well see. I would finally like to get a set of the VO 50.4mm
172.5mm cranks in a 46/30 config.

Any Thoughts?

I havent tried the Albatross bars. To me the Singles Bar is comfy. You
would have to do a side by side comparison. I ride with gloves and am
comfy for 15 miles plus no problem. I havent really ridden it much
further distance wise. The bars have more give than the Bullmoose bars
thats for sure.

[RBW] Is the light surface rust on the clear powdered Riv's a long term problem?

2011-01-19 Thread williwoods
Just curious if anyone agrees with various statements/opinions about
the clear powdered Rivendell frames I have received on some other
forums.

Personally im not too worried about it and I love the visual effect of
the pattern (see link of pics I provided above), much prefer the
texture over it being totally clean.

I havent had my frame long enough to know if the rust effect is
growing over time or if its the same as it was when it left RBW HQ.
Any other raw frame experiences?

Here are some of the posts:

"Curious, it looks like rust is popping up in various spots under the
clear. Wondering if they simply cleared over it all, and it'll stay as
is, or if it will spread, or is spreading? "

"That rust is an issue."

"I have a number of clear powder frames that are 5+ years old with no
rust and heavy sweaty use, and there's not a hint of rust. I also was
a dealer for Salsa when they were doing a clear powder option, and I
talked to Ross about a frame we got that developed rust on the tt in
the form of a hand print... he thought it was a big deal and
refinished at no cost. Wonder why Riv wouldn't blast those frames
first. If there's rust, it wll become an issue."

[RBW] Re: (Dumb) Mark's Rack Installation Question

2011-01-20 Thread williwoods
Which canti brakes do you have? Low profile or high profile?
integrated straddle hangers suck for this reason alone. integrated
hangers were made for ease of assembly not for flexibility in setup.

Get a non integrated straddle hanger or if you have low profile brakes
go with high profile brakes which allow a higher straddle cable
placement.

On my high profile cantis have the straddle hanger placed at about
the bottom headset cup (650b wheel) well out of the way to cause
interference. Braking performance is fantastic snappy and no feeling
of sponge.

I have a hardware store near me that stocks a LARGE selection of
metric stainless steel fasteners. Its one of those Mom & Pop kinds of
places thats not the most visible that only the hardcore locals seem
to know about thats also been around for ages.

call any hardware store near you and ask who locally stocks metric
stainless steel fasteners. There should be something around you and it
wont be ace hardware.

I measured several times I have short legs and a longer upper body.
Test rode a 52 Bombadil fits perfect and the owner has almost the same
body type as I do he is 5'10" and has an 80 PBH.

Saluki - 56 or 54 maybe
Sam Hillborne - 52
Bombadil - 52
A Homer Hilsen - 56

I love em all and would ride em till the cows come home. They are
pretty bikes that happen to make sense too (or maybe they are
practical bikes that happen to look pretty?)

[RBW] Got Rivendell Bombadil

2010-11-15 Thread williwoods
I am very stoked

Found this locally about 3 miles from my place. Bought it without a
seat or rear derailleur. Replaced a few parts including new cables and
housing swapped brakes, removed a few links from the chain. Rode a few
times this weekend. Although my ass is sore from the new Brooks B17
special, I am in love!

Rides so smooth and classy all the way. Now just waiting for my slicks
to arrive. Plan on getting a front rack but not sure which one. I like
the Mini racks and marks rack, but I also saw an ahearn rack at a shop
that is amazing. Its more of a 12 pack rack.

Let me know what you guys think, sorry for the lighting. You can see
it pretty good though.
