[RBW] Re: 2 top tubes - Y2TT plus (at the end of it) divisive cultural reference
I spent a lot of time considering the 56 2TT Sam. Ended up with a lightly used single TT which allowed me to improve the drivetrain. For the 56 the double seems ok. It gives you a great place to stash a pump. I do a fair amount of pubic transit with the bike so having a solid place to grab/hoist the bike seemed like a bonus. For me it came down to a $ decision but the 2TT on a 56 was not an aesthetic problem. With the larger frames I wanted something more diagonal for the 2nd tube. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Wanted to offer this to the group before it ends up on eBay. I have an never used S-84 (27.2 250mm). Ended up with using an SP-72 on the bike and the S-84 is just clutter. Very pretty clutter, though. It has never been mounted only taken out of the box to admire it. So it anyone is interested let me know soon. $150 plus shipping. [RBW] Re: All Rounder vs Bleriot for light touring
Hey Matt. That All-Rounder looks pretty nice. Looks like it is 700c not 26". I would go after that one. A custom Riv is a special bike. A Bleriot is pretty nice too but if it works go for the All-Rounder. [RBW] Re: All Rounder vs Bleriot for light touring
Just noticed the standover in the All-Rounder listing. It is going to be too small. But someone needs to buy that bike! Saw this on SF Craigslist: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/bik/2970252890.html It might work for you. It does not have lowrider braze-ons up front if you were headed that way. Herons are nice frames with strong Riv ties. Some Heron info from the internet archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20061029010109/http://www.heronbicycles.com/geometry.html The Bleriot still looks like a strong option. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne 56cm question
I am ~ 5'10" with 84.5 PBH and have a 56 Sam. The 56 is a great fit for me. I think 84 is on the cusp of 52/56 sizing but bigger is better than smaller as you can dial things in with stem, bars and saddle height. Right now I have the bike built up with 46cm Noodle bars and 8cm Technomic stem. That combo works well for me. I do believe the Taiwan 56 frames are double TT but a call to Riv will answer that. Also - sometimes there are frames in the "attic" at RBW. There was a Protovelo labeled Sam frame a few weeks back. Might still be there. The San Marcos is really geared towards road use with smaller loads and minor off road. A nice looking frame and rides well, though. If you can handle the "girl's bike" questions the Yves Gomez might be worth considering. Same geometry as the Sam. But no top tube at all! Another used bike to keep an eye open for is a Heron. There were a couple of models and they are lighter tubing than the Atlantis - but very similar geometry. Designed by Grant and Waterford built. They take narrower tires than the modern Rivs. You can dig the info out of the internet archive wayback machine. http://web.archive.org/web/20061029010028/http://www.heronbicycles.com/frames.html Dan San Rafael, CA On Jan 21, 7:29 am, Mike Goldsworthy wrote: > Thanks everyone for the help! > > I've sent an email to countrybike and will see what they've got. Looking to do some touch-up on the new-to-me green Ram and was looking for ideas on paint or nail polish that might work. The archives mention Testors #1530 (so-so match) and a Sally Hansen polish but the URL is dead. Any other good matches people have found? [RBW] Re: Using a Sam Hillborne as a "go fast-ish" bike
I had a 56 Sam STT and for me it was definitely more of a country bike than a go fast-ish bike. Started with roly-polys and Noodles but the tires just felt too narrow. Switched to Marathons then threw in the towel. I ended up getting a Ram as the go fast-ish and saving the pennies for the AHH as a country bike. The San Marcos seems like a good option. It is not a touring bike but can take racks and carry a small-ish load. Designed for 32-35mm tires. Lighter tubing than the Sam or AHH so will probably feel more responsive. Good luck in the search. [RBW] Re: What's your Rivendell story?
Way back in the day I convinced my parents that a road bike was what I needed and they fronted me the $ so I could go to REI in Berkeley to pick something out. Spent a fair amount of time there chatting with familiar sales guys and ended up with a Peugeot. Actually memory is fuzzy from the late 70's high school era so it might have been a Gitane. Or something else. But a nice road bike no matter the label. Had been riding the typical Schwinn banana seat bikes until that point. Anyway, ended up going to college in Davis and really getting into cycling. Fair number of centuries and double Cs. Then lost interest until 1994 when I wandered into the local bike shop thinking about getting a mountain bike. Wanted to see what the fuss was about. Instead took an '93 XO-1 out for a spin and was blown away by the bike. Read the Bridgestone catalogs and put the pieces together that Grant had been the main person helping me with my first real bike purchase. Could not make the money work so ended up buying an XO-4 as I would be doing more road than trail riding. Still have that bike. Still fairly stock. About to become more Riv-ish with Albas and some racks. It is a great bike. Since buying the XO-4 I watched Riv but time was not right for another bike. In the last few years though I have added a few bikes. Now have a Ram and a Bomba. My wife recently got a Betty. She loves that bike. Insists on keeping it in the living room. Always a great experience dealing with Riv and Grant. [RBW] FS: 53cm Heron Wayfarer F/F/HS $700 + shipping
Decided to sell the Heron that I was going to build out for my wife for touring - but she is too hooked on her Betty Foy. "See, I can put a lowrider on the Betty, no problem!" Anyway, the frame is in great shape. A few very minor paint dings and a decal scratch. All straight, no dents or anything. Bailey Falls Blue is the color. An interesting dark blue/green metallic. I have a bottle of touch up paint for it from Waterford and an extra decal set. Stronglight A9 alloy headset with both sealed and needle bearing set. The sealed bearings are installed - the needle bearing set is new and unused. This is a really great frame for all around riding or loaded touring. Very comfortable and stable yet pretty lively thanks to the geo and the tubing selection. 26" wheels on the 53cm frame. Grant design and Waterford build. The Wayfarer is basically the Heron Touring frame with these changes: • Features a new, heavy-duty fork equipped with mid-fork braze-ons for low-rider rack mounting. • New stainless steel dropouts are left bare on the mounting surfaces to prevent paint damage from quick release skewers and hubs. • The chainstay bridge is positioned the same distance from the rear axle as the seatstay bridge to provide a cleaner fender installation. • The seatstay and chainstay bridges provide braze-ons for simple, direct fender mounting. The 53cm will fit a saddle height of ~66 to 69cm. Depends how much post you want to show. [RBW] Re: Fitting on the Sam Hillborne
I have a PBH of 84.5 (5' 10" 165) and a 56 Sam. My Sam is a great bike. I rode the 52 and it felt a little small. I am mostly riding on road although I have had the Sam on a few fire trails and it is great. There was some debate at Riv HQ about sizing as 84 -85 is the tipping point between the two sizes. If you are set on 700 tires then you want the 56. If you want 650B and more standover then 52. In my case bigger felt better.
