Re: [RBW] Getting my groove back on with the Platypus - dealing with near misses

2022-12-31 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Some great advice here -- especially to stay far enough to the left to
discourage unsafe passing, and to take the lane when approaching an
intersection. When I do need to take the lane, I also try to keep up with
the vehicle speeds as best I can.

When approaching an intersection, I make sure to never, ever ride alongside
a vehicle (that might turn into me with no warning). I always stay behind
that car and still make sure I'm visible to the car behind.

Begin crossing an intersection right after the cross traffic stops and just
before your light turns green. Giving yourself a head start before all the
chaos of turning traffic increases your visibility and also helps avoid the
left crosses and right hooks. This works like a Leading Pedestrian Interval
traffic signal -- but just be sure to watch out for red light runners on
the street perpendicular to you (that practice unfortunately seems to have
been normalized).

Also, ride assertively and be communicative with arm gestures.

I'm also in New Jersey, but in a fairly dense area where there are so many
side streets and cut-throughs that I can avoid busy and dangerous roads.
(I'm also thankful that my gym is a only mile away.)

2024-06-12 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Leah,

With the front wheel removed and the bike hanging from the rear wheel,
there'll be plenty of room. (Also, bags need to be removed from the bike,
though.) Here's a photo of my Rawland rSogn heading to D2R2 in Vermont. The
bike has an end-to-end length of 67" with both wheels on. On the return
trip, I was told that I didn't need to take the front wheel off, and that
also fit. So, your 55 Platy with a 74" length will fit just fine hanging by
the rear wheel with the front wheel off. No crew member will measure your
bike.

would be great to ride the train home from New Buffalo back to Kzoo after
the wrap-up of my tour on Saturday. I have never ridden Amtrak, so I don’t
know what the setup is inside the train cars.

If anyone has successfully wheeled a longwheelbaser onto Amtrak, let me
 know.

Yes, yes, I know this is what my little purple pocket Platy is for, but
that bike would not be my choice for a 106 mile road ride. I want my 700c
 wheels with the 42mm tires!

I've had 650B x 42 Babyshoe Pass Extralights (with tubes) on my Rawland for
almost three years now (I mounted them just before D2R2 in 2017 to replace

Jim,

The original Raleigh-branded Weinmann calipers had (just) enough reach --
at the very bottom of the slot in the brake arm, the brake shoes just made
it to the 700C rim's braking surface. It's roughly a 65-mm distance from
the brake fixing screw to where the shoes connect to the arm.

2022-02-07 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Hi Roberta,

It's a load of fun (I've done it twice, many years ago). The ride through
Manhattan is amazing, but since it's right after the mass start, it's super
packed and you need to be on guard against collisions from
inexperienced/distracted riders. But after the pack spreads out, it becomes
really enjoyable -- and one gets to ride on roads that would be either
illegal or suicidal otherwise!

Also recommend leaving your car at or near the Staten Island ferry terminal.

Re: [RBW] Your cyclist vs. motorist war/horror stories

2022-10-10 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Pam,

Your summary of the things you do on the road, regarding placement and
communication, is excellent! I try to do all those things. I like that
humanizing look-back!

Regarding communication/signaling: if I'm in the lane and I need to be
there to avoid a close pass when there's an oncoming car in the opposite
lane, I'll stick my left arm out and at an angle, to emphasize the "hold on
just a sec" to the driver behind me. When it's all clear, I'll then give
them a "come on through" wave when I move over, followed by a "thank you"
wave. All this just emphasizes that we aren't in the lane to be jerks, we
just want to be safe.

I don't have too many bad encounters with motorists -- while I live in a
dense area, there are many less busy adjacent streets, paths, and
cut-throughs to use to get around without needing to go on busy roads. (And
thankfully there are no "stroads" in my area.) My bad encounters usually
happen when I'm too far to the side of the road and I get a close pass.
When I catch up to (some of) them, I tell them it's a dangerous move and
explain that New Jersey has a new four-foot passing law. The drivers I
speak to are receptive to the message -- they're just oblivious that being
passed closely is a totally different experience when one doesn't have two
tons of steel surrounding them.

Re: [RBW] The joy of winter riding, and how do you keep your toes warm?

2021-02-06 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
I usually wear three layers of wool (baselayer, jersey, jacket) to keep my
core warm but still allow for moisture removal so I don't sweat. (If it's
well below freezing, then a rain jacket goes on over a baselayer and a
sweater.) For my feet, I wear either trail shoes (adding a layer of saran
wrap over my toes above my socks) or insulated Merrell winter boots. A wool
watch cap covers my ears underneath a helmet, and a pair of softshell
gloves with glove liners underneath for my hands.

But lately I've found that my index fingers get super cold after a while,
no matter what I do. I've been doing the Wim Hof Method ice-cold showers
this past year, and I've noticed that I can sometimes get Raynaud-like
symptoms like Andy Cheatham, so I guess that explains that!

[RBW] My 1x8 Clem

2016-05-01 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck

I know the Joe Appaloosas seem to be all the rage right now — not to
mention all the hubbub with the Hubbuhubbuh and the Rosco Bubbe — but I
thought I’d share details and impressions of my recent Clem build.

This bike will be used mainly for local transportation, running errands,
and various on- and off-road exploration — in other words, your basic
utility bike. While I’ve purchased quite a few parts, accessories, and
miscellaneous non-bike stuff from Rivendell over the past few years — plus,
I eat bacon/don’t jog and just ride :) — this is my first experience with
an actual Rivendell frame.

I went for a minimalistic and utilitarian drivetrain with this one: a
single narrow-wide chainring up front and an 8-speed cassette in the rear,
friction shifted via a handlebar-mounted thumbie. Here are the build specs:

   - Frameset: Clem Smith Jr., 52-cm
   - Headset, BB, and seatpost: Included with frame
   - Crankset: Sugino XD2
   - Chainring: Wolf Tooth Drop-Stop, 110 BCD, 34T
   - Cassette: Shimano, 8-speed, 11-34T
   - Rear derailleur: Shimano XT 780
   - Shifter: Sunrace One-At-a-Time thumbie
   - Chain: SRAM PG870 8-speed
   - Pedals: VP VP-001 Thin Gripsters
   - Front hub: Shutter Precision SV-8 dynamo
   - Rear hub: Shimano XT T780
   - Rims: Grand Bois, 32h
   - Spokes/nipples: Wheelsmith DB14
   - Tires: Schwalbe Big Ben Race Guard, 650B x 48
   - Handlebar: Nitto Bullmoose Bosco, Cromo Dullbrite 54cm
   - Brake levers: Shimano T610
   - Brakes: Avid Single Digit 7 V-brakes
   - Saddle: Brooks B-17
   - Headlight: Busch and Muller Lumotec IQ Premium Cyo
   - Taillight: Busch and Muller Toplight dyno
   - Rack: Pletscher Clem, with pannier rails and pump

Some initial thoughts:

   -

Despite this being Rivendell’s “budget” bike, I’m really impressed with
the build quality of the frame. The lugwork at the seat cluster and fork
crown is beautiful, and the fork itself has an elegant little bend to it.
The paint job is just gorgeous, and the cream-painted lug windows and
fork-crown top are a nice touch. I also appreciate that the frame has
plenty of clearance to run wide tires, and it’s got lots of mounting points
   for fenders, racks, lights, etc.
   -

It’s a big bike. Of course it’s the long top tube and chainstays, and
the wingspan and rise of the Bullmoose Bosco handlebar add to the effect
(not to mention the chain needing a few more links over what’s in a
standard package). But it’s that long wheelbase — along with 48-mm (actual
width is 45 mm) tires — that makes for a plush and comfortable ride. It
also has a nice, stable feeling to it — it just goes where I want it to go
in a well-balanced manner. And that long wheelbase also keeps my heels away
   from rear panniers.

   -

I’m not entirely sold on the Bullmoose Bosco handlebar. I love the
looks, and it provides for a nice upright position and great visibility for
the dense and trafficky area I usually ride in, but I find that my wrists
are not in an ideal position. It’s not a deal-breaker, but I wish I could
rotate the bar downward just a tad.
   -

I really like the Sunrace shifters. I’ve read that some haven’t been too
happy with them, but mine work flawlessly; I haven’t had any ghost shifting
or any other problems. Because of interference with the brake lever
clamping bolt, I had to rotate the shifter to the top of the bar (and away
from Rivendell’s usual method of mounting them), but it’s still easily
   accessible with my thumb.
   -

The 1x8 drivetrain works really well, and I love the simplicity of the
set-up. The 34-tooth chainring with the 11-34t cassette gives me a range of
26-81 gear inches, which is just right for the terrain I deal with and what
I use the bike for, and the narrow-wide chainring does what it’s supposed
to do — while I haven’t gone over really rough terrain yet, and I’m running
only an 8-speed cassette, I have yet to drop a chain.

All in all, I’m very happy with this bike, and I’m glad I took the leap of
faith last year to jump on the pre-order special on the frame. The Clem is
a great introduction to Rivendell bikes, and I’m now wondering if this
might be the gateway drug to picking up more!

More photos of the build can be seen here:

[RBW] Re: My 1x8 Clem

2016-05-02 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Thanks for the kind words, Matt, Joe, Ron, and Erl!

@ Matt: Yeah, it's a lng bike -- I can fit my other bikes into the
back of my Saab without needing to remove the front wheel, but the Clem is
an exception. And while the Wolf Tooth chainring isn't cheap, it's well
made (and in the USA), and it 's just what I need (although I haven't tried
a 1x8 using a normal chainring or a chainkeeper).

@ Joe: That sounds awesome! I would love to see how that eClem project
progresses.

@ Ron: I'm really happy with the Carsick Design panniers, and Brian and
Monica are great people to deal with.

@ Erl: This is my first experience with a Shutter Precision hub, but so
far I really like it. It compares well with the Schmidt SONdelux Wide Body
hub I have on my Rawland rSogn that powers an Edelux I: Both do the job,
but while the SONdelux may make for a stronger wheel and has more of a
high-end feel, the SV-8 is significantly less expensive (while also having
an attractive look). Also, if you trim the headlight wire to get an exact
length for your application, it's easier to install the wire to the hub
with the plastic press-fit connectors of the SP hub, rather than breaking
out the soldering iron and heat gun...and magnifying glass! So, I'd
definitely consider another SP hub.

2016-05-02 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck

Mark, I love the grey, too; I think it’s the superb paint job really makes
this color stand-out. I hadn’t mentioned earlier that I love the decals,
too – particularly the one of Clem wearing his bowler, climbing out of the
manhole. Thank you for the comment; I’ll definitely spend some more time
with the Boscos, and I’m looking forward to reading the next installment of
your Clem(…) reporting.

El Sapo, thanks for the compliment! I agree, maybe it’s the long wheelbase,
but it just seemed that the Clem was screaming for a rear rack.

Patrick, you should know that the idea of installing a 1x drivetrain came
from reading your posts on the subject a while back. So, thanks for the
inspiration (and your note)!

John, thanks very much! I myself learned a lot from this group (like going
about a 1x system), so I'm glad to hear my post was helpful.
Philip, that’s awesome to hear; thanks for passing that on! (That’s it: the
Bosco Bullmoose is staying on!) Thanks for the comment, and please post
pictures of that San Marcos project.

[RBW] Re: My 1x8 Clem

2016-05-02 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck

Thanks very much, Keith and Chris!

My saddle height is 71 cm. According to the brochure, the 52-cm Clem is
suited for those with saddle heights from 68 to 78 cm, so I'm close to
being right in the middle of the range. I would also be at the very top of
the range for the 45-cm Clem (62 to 71 cm), but although sometimes I feel
the bike is too big, I think I made the right decision with the 52.

Chris, you have some great projects ahead -- perhaps you can let your
husband borrow one of them? : ) I agree, those Boscos do look really great,
and I think I'll keep them on for a while and see how it goes.

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-06 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Great photos, Mark!

Bob B, I'm glad you mentioned incorporating some of the many train lines in
the metro NYC area into these rides -- it's a great way to avoid the most
congested areas and to get to where the riding's good, and it can also
eliminate the return leg of non-loop rides, thus acting as a distance
multiplier. It should be noted, though, that Metro-North requires a permit
to bring your bike onboard their trains (in addition to their time
restrictions). NJ Transit does not require a permit, but it has the usual
rush-hour prohibitions. More info here:

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-07 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck

Bob B,

When I go for rides along the Delaware & Raritan Canal towpath, the more
convenient option for me is to take NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley line (as I
can board it in Westfield, which is very close to my house) and get off in
Bound Brook. From the station, the D&R trail is basically around the
corner. And once on the trail, I usually head southwest to Princeton rather
than on the short southeast leg to New Brunswick, so I haven’t done the
BB-NB leg recently.

But Bound Brook to Trenton is a nice ride alongside the canal and is
entirely off-road; the surface is not paved, but rather dirt/crushed stone.
The upper portion is kind of bland in some sections, with just tree after
tree, but there are some interesting locks and spillways along the way. The
more scenic section is further south by the Princeton area: the trail runs
on a sliver of land between the canal on one side and Lake Carnegie on the
other. Plus, you can stop and get lunch at a great deli in Kingston (just
up Rt. 27 from the towpath) and have a picnic at the Kingston Locks, or in
Princeton proper. (You can also access the towpath there easily using NJT’s
Princeton station — from NYC, take the train to Princeton Junction, and
then transfer onto the “Dinky” train for the very short ride to the town of
Princeton.)

Here are some photos of a 50-mile ride I did last year on the D&R Canal
towpath from Bound Brook to Princeton University and back:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/30490050@N04/albums/72157655738969366

Trenton is a major station with amenities inside and even a bike rack and
repair stand outside. Instead of (or in addition to) riding back to New
Brunswick from there, you can ride upstream along the Delaware on a rail
trail that runs along the D&R feeder canal; it runs another 31 miles from
Trenton to Frenchtown, passing through some very lovely little river towns.
(There’s also a towpath that runs along the Delaware Canal on the
Pennsylvania side of the river, so you can put together some nice loops
using the bridges spanning the Delaware (including a beautiful
Roebling-built pedestrian suspension bridge).)

Here are some some photos from a 35-mile ride from Lambertville and
Frenchtown and back, utilizing both sides of the river:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/30490050@N04/albums/72157635438917731

Finally, just to give you an idea of what the area looks like, here are
some photos of a loop ride using both sides of the Delaware, starting and
finishing at Bull’s Island Recreation Area (about 22 miles north of
Trenton, where the pedestrian bridge over the Delaware is located).

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-08 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck

Thanks! Yeah, that area isn’t what most people imagine NJ to look like.

DC to Pittsburgh on the C&O/GAP trails is on my list, so I’d love to see a
write-up and pics from you when you do it.

Here’s an article (with a photo) on the repair stand at the Trenton
station. (Hoboken has one, also):

http://www.nj.com/mercer/index.ssf/2015/04/new_bike_tool_station_will_help_trentol_locals_fix.html

I haven’t done the Trenton to Lambertville section yet — not because I
avoided it, but because so far I wanted to explore the area further north
without putting the mileage in just to get there, so in those cases I just
drove my car to Lambertville or Bulls Island and then ride from there. I'd
much rather take a train than drive, though. But Trenton to Frenchtown and
back would be a great ride.

Regarding rides further upriver on the Pennsylvania side, you should
consult the trail status using this link:

http://delawareandlehigh.org/map/

Also, check out the Circuit Trails, which highlights the status of which
trails are complete, in construction, or planned for the proposed 750-mile
(!) network of trails in the greater Philadelphia area:

given your mention of bad experiences with FedEx, I'm wondering if a hard

Thanks for the reply, Doug. (And that's also a good idea regarding the

Like Matt, I'm also a bit uneasy about putting my bike in a cardboard box.
Maybe I'm just paranoid, as of course lots of brand new bikes are shipped
that way (although they probably do a better job packing than me).

I guess it's a toss-up between peace of mind vs. less disassembly.

[RBW] Re: Light compatilbity question for PV-8, 6V3W, Dynamo Hub Question

2020-09-11 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Hi Roberta,

My Clem has an SV-8 hub up front that powers a B+M Lumotec IQ Premium Cyo
headlight and a B+M Toplight on the rear rack. (The SV-8 is more ideally
suited for smaller wheels than for the 650B wheel it's built into, but
according to Shutter Precision, it still puts out 6V 2.4W for 26"/700C
wheels.) It works great.

Your PV-8, with its rated 6V 3W for the 26"/700C wheels, puts out a little
more wattage than my SV-8, so it'll be fine.

How about Taconic State Park - Rudd Pond (just north of Millerton, NY),
followed by Bash Bish Falls State Park further north?

(I've been to the former, but not the latter.) You can take the Metro North
train to Wassaic, and a good portion of the route from Wassaic to Rudd Pond
to Bash Bish is on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail.

[RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-09-21 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
What kind of rides is everyone interested in? What distances do you have in
mind? Here are some thoughts right off the top of my head:

The only scenic section of the Henry Hudson Trail is the very short section
between Atlantic Highlands and Highlands. So, a nice ride could be to start
from Atlantic Highlands, ride along the Raritan Bay into Highlands, then
cross the bridge over the Shrewsbury River (a little bit of a climb) and
hit Sandy Hook, which is really nice. Once there, you can ride along Sandy
Hook Bay, ride past old officers quarters, gun emplacements, and a
lighthouse. This is a 25-30 mile round trip. (But starting from the Matawan
train station to the west would add another 20 miles to the round trip.)

Another option is Patriots Path, which one can pick up not too far from the
Morristown train station (actually, Morris Plains might be better to avoid
Morristown traffic). Starting from Speedwell Lake, the eastern part is
paved, but it turns to dirt singletrack soon enough for the rest of the way
westward. It's all off road, cross-country stuff -- diverse landscapes,
mostly flat, but there are some rollers and a few short but steep hills in
the middle with roots (you can always get off your bike and hike it up).
The area gets progressively less suburban as you head further west, and by
the time you reach Mendham, there's even a nice little water crossing. It's
about a 20 mile round trip from Morristown to Mendham and back.

If you're looking for just a little chill ride for a get-together, another
place is the Loantaka Brook Reservation (Morristown area), coupled with
some road stretches in the area with the Traction Line Trail. (Getting off
the train at Convent Station will put you off literally right alongside the
Traction Line Trail.) Nice, varied terrain, although the trails tend to get
crowded on the weekend.

The D&R Canal towpath is nice. The more scenic section is the one that runs
along the Delaware River (but might be too far for New Yorkers). There's
also a section between New Brunswick and Trenton with a nice stretch around
Princeton. An option could be to get off the train at Bound Brook, pick up
the trail there, and head south to Kingston and Princeton (but that's
around a 40-mile round trip, mostly through nothing but trees along a
canal).

The Columbia Trail is another nice one. There's a train stop very close to
the southern trailhead at High Bridge, but the trains don't go that far
west on weekends. But from there, it's a 22-mile round trip between there
and the Long Valley Brew Pub.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-09-28 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Starting from Atlantic Highlands (First Ave & Hennessey), it's about 4
miles to the ocean (after passing through the town of Highlands and then
crossing the Rt. 36 bridge, which has cycling/ped infrastructure). From the
bridge, the basic loop to the end of Sandy Hook and back to the bridge is
around 12 miles (of course, it's more if you decide to ride around and hit
up all some interesting points up there). So, the trip from AH to SH and
back to AH will be about 20-25 miles.

Now if one were to start at the Matawan train station, it's around 11 miles
to reach Atlantic Highlands, so the trip from Matawan to Sandy Hook and
back will then be roughly 45 miles. (To use Jan Heine's terms, think of
that portion as the "transport stage" to reach the start of the "official"
ride at AH!)

Another option for those coming by train would be to continue south along
the ocean after Sandy Hook and take Rt. 36/Ocean Ave for most of the way to
pick up the return train at Long Branch (it's 7 miles from the Rt. 36
bridge to the station). So that trip from Matawan to AH to SH to LB would
be around 34 miles.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-09-30 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Yes, John, those driving directions are the best way to get there.

Regarding restrooms: According to the Monmouth County Park System's
website, there a restroom at the HHT Activity Center at Rt. 36 and Avenue
D, and there's also one at Popamora Point, at the eastern end of the trail
in Highlands. There are also some restrooms along the way in Sandy Hook at
the beach complexes:

https://www.nps.gov/gate/planyourvisit/upload/MUP_Wayside-Map_rev5July2017.pdf

But looking just now at Seastreak's schedule, it doesn't show a stop at
Atlantic Highlands! (Might be a temporary thing because of reduced demand
due to COVID?) It does stop further east at Highlands, though. Also, the
earliest Saturday or Sunday arrival at Highlands is 11:45am, and the last
two boats depart Highlands at 4:30pm and 7:30pm.

So, just to throw out an idea, maybe those taking the train (or who want to
get a longer ride in) can start at Matawan (NJT North Jersey Coast Line
train #7229 leaves NYP at 9:07am and arrives at Aberdeen/Matawan at
10:11am), head east to meet up with those who want to start at Atlantic
Highlands at, say 11:30am, and then continue east (IMO, the most scenic
portion of the "mainland" is between Atlantic Highlands and Highlands) to
pick up those arriving by ferry at Highlands at 11:45am and then cross the
bridge to hit Sandy Hook. (Similar situation for the return, but the train
riders have the option of returning to Aberdeen/Matawan or heading south
for a shorter trip to Long Branch).

Any thoughts on this?

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-09-30 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
The HHT Activity Center has no parking and it's right along busy and noisy
Rt. 36; the Shore Casino appears to be a banquet hall (not a casino), so I
suggest the Atlantic Highlands meet-up location be the parking lot along
First Ave (left side as you head toward the pier). We can then ride to
Highlands to meet up with anyone arriving by ferry. (Remember, according to
Seastreak's website there is no ferry at Atlantic Highlands at this time.)

Most of the path from Matawan to Highlands is a former railroad grade, so
it's basically flat. Between Atlantic Highlands and Highlands, it runs
right along the bay, so it avoids Mt. Mitchell. The only climbs are the
bridge approaches, but they're not bad.

It should also be noted that the trail is segmented in Atlantic Highlands
-- once one reaches Avenue D, turn left and head down Avenue D, make a
right onto Center Ave, and pick up the trail resurfaces at the intersection
of Center and Hennessey. Also, the trail ends at Popamora Point, so the
ride continues on Shore Drive through Highlands to reach the bridge.

Regarding food, there are some places in Highlands along the main drag (Bay
Ave). I might probably just bring my own lunch and avoid going inside.

Per the aerial map in the below link (scroll down), the area I mentioned
earlier is free commuter parking for Seastreak (Lot 2). (The smaller Lot 1
also works, if spaces are available at 11:30.) I think you were looking at
Lot 3.) I believe what you're suggesting is Lot 4, which would also work.
But wherever you may want to park, you'll be sure to see Rivs circling

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-10-05 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Regarding directions: Plug this into your GPS:

2 Simon Lake Drive
Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716

Regarding parking: Lot 1 might fill up sooner, but Lots 1 and 2 are right
next to each other, so it really doesn't matter; we'll see each other. Even
if you park on the street somewhere, just come down to the trail.

Regarding the trail surface: I haven't been on the HHT since 2018, but I
seem to remember that most of the trail is paved, and what isn't is a very
fine crushed stone surface -- in other words, any bike and any tire will be
fine on it.

Regarding the climb: They are approaches to a fairly high bridge, but the
grade really isn't bad at all.

Regarding the ride from Sandy Hook to Long Branch: It's a nice (and
shorter) alterntive to going back to Matawan. As Dave pointed out, the ride
from Sandy Hook to Long Branch starts off alongside a large rock seawall on
a paved trail, but that's only for a couple of miles -- after that, you're
on Rt. 36 as you enter downtown Sea Bright. After Sea Bright, there's a
wide shoulder and you pass nice homes and some beach clubs. At Long Branch
Rt. 36 turns into a four-lane highway (Ocean Blvd), so I've turned onto
side streets from there to get to the train station. A ride along Ocean Ave
(not Blvd) and on the promenade at this time of year (no crowds) would be
very nice, as it's obviously right along the ocean.

To give you an idea of what some of the route is like, the photos in the
below link are from a ride where I took the train from Linden to
Aberdeen/Matawan, rode east along the HHT, turned right after the bridge
(bypassed Sandy Hook that time), rode down Rt. 36 and hit the beach at
Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch to go for a swim before
taking the train home:

And this one is of Sandy Hook itself:

components that interested me, as I'm still collecting parts for my build.
(For instance, the Silver cranksets look pretty good (although they're only
available on the complete bikes right now), and the Bosco Bulmoose bars
intrigued me; I think I'll be going with them.) But there are some

decide on the rest of the drivetrain -- I have an 8-speed 12-26 cassette in
the rear (want to go the friction route), thinking that I'd get the Sugino
40/26 double, but then the 1x setups that I'm seeing intrigue
me. Decisions, decisions!

2018-09-25 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
I have a Subaru Crosstrek. It's just big enough to keep my 650B bike inside
without needing to remove a wheel, but that's definitely not the case with
my other bikes, especially the Clem -- the front wheel needs to come off
for that.

My previous car was a 1996 Saab 900 -- I used to put two bikes in (keeping

[RBW] Re: Truing wheels question.

2018-10-06 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Like the others have said, it's not difficult; once you understand the
basics of how each turn of the spoke nipple affects radial, lateral, and
center trueness, as well as how it affects the tension of nearby spokes, it
just takes patience. Jobst Brandt's book, The Bicycle Wheel, gave me a good
understanding of the mechanics involved.

In addition to buying a truing stand, I also have a Park tensiometer --
they're both very helpful to a novice wheelbuilder like myself (and
important to get the tension right). I've built up about a dozen wheels so
far, and they've all held up very well -- although I taco'ed my very first
wheel when I got overzealous with stress-relieving when truing! Anyway, I
encourage you to give it a go --it's very satisfying to ride on wheels you
built on your own!

Hey Tom,

I totally agree with your thoughts on the Clem! Mine's going in the
opposite direction from you, though: I'm in the middle of swapping out
parts on my grilver 52 Clem H to convert it from a knock-around / utility
bike into something that will also be more suited to rougher terrain (but
apparently not overly rooty/rocky trails!). But that's OK -- it just shows
how versatile this machine is, and it would be a real shame if it was to be
dropped from the lineup, so get one while you can!

Well done!

I love everything about your Sam and how it's set-up, including what looks
to be a hack decaleur -- could you please describe or post some pics of
that?

Nice build, Jacob!

Take away the basket, and change the Albatross bars to a Bosco Bullmoose,
and it's pretty much how I built my 52 Clem H.

I'm in for a $50 credit, and I'm also looking at buying some items right
now. I see a lot of things are sold out -- I'm wondering (hopefully) if
it's because of a recent surge of purchases in response to Grant's message.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....

2020-02-01 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Well put, Mark!

I tend to follow all of the rules of the road, but only when it works with
my safety: I'll do whatever I have to do to stay safe, like use a usually
empty sidewalk for a very brief portion on a busy and fast four-lane road
with no shoulder, or bolt out into the intersection just before the traffic
light for me turns green for me (but after the red light-running motorists,
of course) before it gets messy with turning and impatient motorists.
Little tweaks.

But otherwise, I ride away from the curb so that I'm seen (also to
discourage motorists from passing me in an unsafe manner), I signal my
intentions (just point with my arms), I am always ready to brake hard when
approaching an intersection (with the assumption that someone in a car will
pull out in front of me, whether we make eye contact or not), I ride with a
headlight on at all times, and I ride in an assertive and predictable
manner. (Now don't label me as one of those rigid anti bike-infra vehicular
cyclists -- I ride like that when I have to, but I'd much rather ride on a
bikeway -- a properly designed one, that is.)

Granted, I don't commute to work on my bike, but despite living in one of
the most densely populated counties in the country (and in the most densely
populated state), I can't recall the last time a motorist intentionally
threatened me or gave me abuse for being on a bike. (Careless driving is
another matter.) Because of the vast network of interconnected streets, I
try to ride on low-traffic, low-speed routes, tied together with bike
paths, walkways, and alleys when I can.

[RBW] Re: Crash Stories

2020-03-16 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
I don't have to go back to my childhood for this one, as it happened less
than four years ago.

I was part of a small group, riding on a rail trail after getting off a
train in Wassaic, NY and heading toward Millerton to camp overnight for the
following day's annual Harlem River Rail Ride event. Being the amateur
documentarian photographer that I am, I was taking photos of fellow riders
and the surrounding scenery (and spending too much time looking through the
viewfinder of my camera rather than directly in front of me). At all road
crossings there was a large post right in the middle of the trail to
discourage idiot motorists from driving onto it. Well, one was coming up,
and I just happened to catch sight of it (through my camera's viewfinder)
only a second before slamming into it. I wasn't going really fast, but it
was fast enough for me to get thrown right over the bars, do a complete
flip, and land on my back. I had a scrape on my shoulder and knee, but
otherwise I was well enough to continue the ride to the campsite and dinner
by a lake that day and do the main ride the next day -- heck, even the
camera around my neck survived -- although the pain did come a couple of
days later. That'll teach me to look where I'm going!

[RBW] Re: Has Anyone Rinko'd Their Riv? - Follow Up on Yesterday's Rivendell Email

2019-05-28 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
As others have mentioned, the Vermonter (DC to St. Albans, VT, via NYC)
does allow bikes on board without the need to box them up -- they've
modified the luggage nook of a regular coach on that train so that the
bike's rear wheel is hung from a hook. Getting your bike on board through a
coach doorway, then rounding a corner to get into the passenger compartment
(while having panniers looped across my shoulders) is not as easy as simply
rolling it (or handing it off) to a dedicated baggage car, but it works,
and the online booking with bike was very straightforward (although they do
charge an additional $20, I believe).

Here's a photo from when I took the Vermonter from New Jersey to
Massachusetts for D2R2. I removed the front wheel as per instructions for
the ride up, but on the return trip, the conductor let me just hang the
bike intact, as there was enough room for the bike to hang.

Hi Kai,

I'll be driving up the Garden State Parkway from Cranford, NJ on that
Saturday morning (and returning home that night). Also, I'll have room for
a second bike on the rear rack of my car next to my Clem. Will that work?
Will you be able to get across the Hudson? Maybe meet at a train station?
