2024-11-05 Thread iamkeith
The Toyo article is in Reader #31.

https://notfine.com/rivendell/

I can see how I romanticized my recollection of it. I don't think they're
the ones who reserved certain tasks for elder artisans. They're a company
like many, who train employees in their methods and culture, and hope
they'll be around to continue in the future.

[RBW] Re: Toyo frames

2024-11-05 Thread ascpgh
To the unaccounted elevation of Toyo-built versus others, they were still a
mass maker, just smaller volume and able to solve the economic formula of
the moment given all the variables. You can bet Grant knows about exchange
rates and the implications of even an economic choice of wholesale costing
if in another currency.

A mass maker is still that. Your name isn't on the bike and the uses you
intend may match the marketing descriptions but you can still come up short
of perfect.

My Toyo-built Rambouillet has had the rear dropouts replaced (the DS one
broke right across its entry into the chainstay) and the rear brake bridge
rebrazed because it broke out of the seat stays. Fortunately for me the
solid pool of brass was like a socket that kept the caliper the right
distance from the axle, even if it did rotate a few degrees on the side
where it popped when the pads grabbed the rim.

RBW had MN replace the dropouts and JB resprayed the orange-sicle finish.
By the time I had the stay reattached, not at a higher position since
clearance was already better than the fork's, I had it done locally and did
and rattle can spot repaint to cover the steel. Yes there were no Toyo Rams
with windows of cream like the head tube on the seat stays, except mine.

So now at the Toyo Rambouillet's twenty year mark I'm riding two bikes for
my travels my longer, heavier trips are on a bike made custom for me, my
uses and preferences of loading. You could only conform to a Toyo-built
bike's intentions, hopefully they are close to your own. Otherwise the
subtle nuances of a custom made for you is only limited by the
conversations and ideas of a builder you engage.

If you're curious to see the Toyo Factory and its history, watch the below
YouTube link I happened to come across as I researched this topic several
weeks ago. It's not directly Rivendell related, but they do mention how
they used to build other brands and how they've evolved. It's an
interesting watch if you're a visual type of person and a fellow Toyo owner
like myself.

[RBW] Tire Recommendations (largest diameter)

2024-11-05 Thread Bob Walicki
On one of my bikes I have 1x set-up. It's currently a 32T up front and the
largest I can go is 34T. I think I want to do that as I want to be able to
push a little harder.

In conversations with my LBS they pointed out I could also go as large as
possible with my tires to increase the length of each revolution.

I'm currently running 700x44 Snowqualmies (RH). I definitely have clearance
for "taller" tires, but I'm at a loss for even starting a search like this.

Anyone have recs?

TIA
Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: First Riv consideration

2024-11-05 Thread Ryan Schlichting
Hi all, this is actually my first post. I’ll send another introductory post
soon but I wanted to respond to this.

I live in the East bay so I actually tested out the Charlie Gallup a few
days ago. It definitely has a kickstand plate. I loved the ride. I’m
originally a roadie and was thinking about getting a Roadini next month but
decided to try out the Gallup just for fun. I was blown away by it. You can
really feel the flex but in a springy way. I rode it on two different days
just to be sure and decided to get one. It’s the ultimate comfortable road
bike that’s still light and fast. Even though it’s meant for swept back
bars, I think drops will be perfect for it as long as I get the right stem
length.

FWIW, I think Riv is very conservative in their weight ratings. Even
their "light" offerings are very sturdy. I am 275 lbs and have owned
several of their bikes and never had a problem. That includes a 61cm
Roadeo and 61cm Roadini. Both were pretty stiff even with my weight. I
road both mostly on pavement, but also on some light gravel trails around
the City (Denver). I put maybe 10-15 extra pounds on the Roadini in a rear
saddlebag and no issues. Actually the most flexible Riv I had was a 64cm
Clem L, which is probably understandable given the low stepover and very
long effective top tube length. I used to load that one up with groceries
all the time in a front basket - probably another 20 pounds. It was fine,
 but a bit flexy.

To Mathias' note I would suggest that Richard Sachs, Mark Nobillette
and Joe Starck were the most notable early builders.. along with but ahead
of Waterford. But I suggest that mostly because doing so illustrates a
point: that there's a lot of subjective measure as to what or whos is
 "better."

As the others note, Grant has always been very adamant that all of
Rivendell's "factories" are equally good, so who are we to challenge that.

As the others state, having Toyo make larger batches was just one step in
 a
continuous and ongoing process of trying to keep the bikes affordable.

All that said, and since I own a couple of Toyo-built models, I like to
IMAGINE that they have some special magic. If you can find the Reader
article, it is pretty interesting. I want to say mid 40s in issue no.
 The
biggest thing, if I remember correctly, was the amount of experience and
expertise the builders had. There were several "tiers" of craftsmen, with
the most important work being left to the seniors. (Or do zI have this
mixed up with Nitto??! Maybe both?) They were/are true craftsmen, seeing
brazing as a calling and lifetime career, and multi-generational in some
cases. In theory, experience keeps someone from over-heating a tube, or
impropperly filling a joint, and "could" make a stronger and prettier
frame. In practice, it probably doesn't make much difference. I don’t
 know
if there's room or appreciation for that level of craftsmanship in the
world anymore. I bought the Japanese Steel coffee table book from Riv.
 It
is nice to think about a time when that culture DID exist.

There were other, minordetails that only an overly obsessed bike geek
 would care about, like: subtlely s-shaped chainstays on the Atlantis;
graceful, double-taper seat stays on the Rambouillet; and artfully thinned
edges on the lugs of the Saluki. Many of the high-quality steel tubes
 that
era are no longer made, but I don't know if they were superior or not.
Tubing manufacture and metalurgy is a huge rabbit hole to jump into, if
someone was interested. Grant has always shunned the ultra-lite, exotic
tubes in favor of durability, anyway. One other interesting thought is
that, in that era, the frames were 100% brazed (maybe with the exception
 of
canti posts). So a damaged tube or stay could theoretically be replaced
 with greater ease.

All the design refinements manifested in the newer models certainly
out-weigh any artisan touches of the old models. Some day, when China
takes Taiwan, we're all going to wax nostalgic about what we have now!

   - *Check your email client settings*: If you're using a third-party

"Keep email on server" setting is enabled.
   - *Check your email filters*: Filters can accidentally send emails to

   blocking emails.
   - *Check your server settings*: POP and IMAP settings are handled by

   - *Update your email app*: If you're using a third-party email app,
update it to the latest version.

Jeff -

I've posted about this a few times, but as a reminder:

- If someone is not a list member they cannot see your email address and
would have difficulty contacting you directly.
- If someone has contacted you directly offering an item you seek, best
practice is to check if they are a list member.
- In this case, there is no one with that user name (and only one user with
an "@proton.me" account).
- That means that someone has joined the group and quietly ID'ing folks who
post WTT / WTB, then contacting them from another account.
- I have no ability to ID a non-list member (and since that account is not
a list member, I cannot ban them)

Best practice = Check the name/email - you can search generally in
Conversations. If they don't show up, assume it is a scam.

Re: [RBW] 135mm rear hub

2024-11-05 Thread Jakob
I'm not quite sure I understand what you're looking for exactly.

At least here in Germany you can get 135mm QR rear hubs easily. Many of
them from Shimano. Ones with 36 holes are a little harder than 32 holes,
but still pretty available.
Where it gets interesting is if you don't want it in black, or if you don't
want to have a visible disc rotor mount. (I compromised about the latter
for my Clem wheelset. It's always good to have components that you can use
on different bikes anyway...)

Cheers,
Jakob

[RBW] Re: anyone know the ERD of the wheels on THIS era of clem smith jr?

2024-11-05 Thread Dorothy C
You don’t say what wheel size you have, but my first run Appa from 2016
came with the same multi color nipple wheels as the Clem and they were Alex
DM24. I did the same thing you are planning and had the LBS replace the Riv
front hub with a Kasai dynacoil, although I later rebuilt it myself when I
upgraded the Appa wheels to Velocity Atlas rims, which seemed almost
identical in ERD, at least in the 26” size I had

doublestick tape. That’s “very high bond”, and shouldn’t bump out the

A very effective and concise “anti-spamming" checklist.

I expected “steelcore” to be a scammer but found the scamming attempt
experience interesting enough to raise the matter, and I thought it might
be worth alerting others.

I’m still tempted to string “steelcore” on a bit, but I suppose the wise
thing is to just ignore him/her/it/they/them/whatthehell.

[RBW] Foreign 2-wheelers: Chukudu

2024-11-05 Thread Patrick Moore
What do you do if you need to move retail-scale commercial loads but have
no technical skills beyond that of a peasant farmer,* no materials beyond
forest trees, nails, and vehicle small scrap, and no tools beyond a
machete, a hammer, and a home-made pry bar?

You make a chukudu: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chukudu

https://youtu.be/vJ9lFl3H6SE

They can carry more than a small truck: "the largest chukudus can carry up
to 800 kilograms (1,800 lb)."[9]
 My 1984
Citroen Acadiene with a 800 kg curb weight was rated for a 500 kg payload,
and the 602 cc flat twin at full chat got it up to 75 on a long straight
with howling tail wind).

The chukudu weighs only 150 lb or so, not much more than a double-top-tube
Rivendell. (Sorry, snipe snipe snipe.)

*Important qualification. Artisans in Kandahar and Peshawar back in the
‘70s when my father traveled there on US govt business could make up to
heavy anti-aircraft machine guns from scrap metal with bus axle barrels on
charcoal fires with hand tools. Cheap AK-47s and RPGs took over the trade.

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus 2024 frames

2024-11-05 Thread Dorothy C
It will come with a generic one-bolt seat post to tide you over, so perhaps
you just need a saddle for now. They work best if you grease up the threads
and underside of bolt head of the binder bolt, I’ve found. Less tendency to
slip

My platypus frame set came today. Here’s the timeline:
 October 26 9:00 p.m. EST order placed
October 27 2:30 a.m. EST confirmation on order shipped
October 29 4:00 p.m. EST frame set arrived
There were no duties/taxes/VAT’s or whatever, BUT, Blue Lug doesn’t add
sales tax, so I have to go back through my account at the end of every
 year
to add up all my purchases for state taxes. Also, shipping was kind of
 high
at $187. And had I waited a few days I could have gotten the frame set
cheaper, as they have decreased the price slightly. Now it’s time to hose
down the inside of this frame with some boeshield and chase the bottom
 bracket shells! [image: image0.jpeg]

Blue Lug seem to have gotten a huge amount of frames in the recent

Re: [RBW] New Susie - Build Questions: BB Spindle and Centerlock Hubs

2024-11-05 Thread Richard Rose
Check out Bitex hubs. I stumbled into a set of wheels for my Gus & it has a Bitex rear - their touring hub. It’s been performing very well & gets recommended a lot by some highly regarded wheel builders. It is noisier than the Deore rear hub on my Clem.Sent from my iPhoneOn Nov 5, 2024, at 11:18 AM, Garrett K wrote:Hey folks. I just got a lugged Susie and am gathering parts. I found this out when building my Toyo Atlantis. I prefer the Deore T610 hubs, but cannot find them available. Any issue running centerlock hubs for a rim brake bike? Will probably go with the Deore M6000 rear hub and Alfine dynamo front hub (centerlock) and lace them to Cliffhangers. Thanks!

I found with my Appaloosa (a 2020 model) that the provided 26.8 seatpost
was a slightly loose fit in the seat tube. By my vernier calipers the
seatpost was correctly sized, and I tried a couple of other 26.8 seatposts
I had with the same result, so the seat tube I.D. was slightly over spec. I
bought a 27.0 Nitto S65 seatpost and reamed the seat tube so that post was
an exact sliding fit.

Re: [RBW] New Susie - Build Questions: BB Spindle and Centerlock Hubs

2024-11-05 Thread Garrett K
Thanks for the info on the hubs. I think Analog cycles has those Bitex hubs
too. Velocity has a 135mm rim brake hub as well, black only and a matching
dynamo. I'll figure out a plan.

Good to know a 122mm bb should work. I called Riv and they said a 122-123mm
spindle should be good.
