Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-31 Thread masmojo
I don't remember who posted the link to the new PDW Beast fenders, but I'd been
contemplating fenders for my Clementine and as soon as I saw them I knew they
were the hot ticket for me. Ordered them & they came a few days ago. Tried to
mount them up on Sunday, but I was promptly aware that my brake situation (low
profile XTR cantilevers) wasn't going to work! :-(

What to do!?

I briefly considered V brakes, but that would involve switching levers as well
and I dig my levers so that left me with a dilemma.

I got some Paul MiniMotos a while back in a trade, they won't really work on
the Clementine either, but as chance would have it I am on the verge of a major
refresh of my Atlantis; it currently has Paul touring Canti's on it and I
believe those will be fine on the Clementine. So I will rotate those on the
Clementine & put the MiniMoto's on the Atlantis. If this works as planned I'll
be quite chuffed as it will effectively be an upgrade on all fronts. 👍🏼

Hopefully, a positive report to follow. 😉

[RBW] 2019 stats? Post'em if ya got'em

2019-12-31 Thread masmojo
I realize there a few hours left, but I am unlikely to move the needle any
before the end of the day so I'll go first.

First 2018 was a highwater mark for me so I was unlikely to match the 2,700+
miles I did last year.

I had some challenges at the beginning of the year which likely killed my
totals, but overall I feel positive going into the next decade.

Total 2,400 miles
1,045 of that was on my Radwagon E-bike. I am hesitant to include those miles
at all, except that those are miles that I would have had to otherwise use my
car. So you can put an Asterisk next to them if you like, but I'll call it a
win. 😉

That still leaves a fairly respectable 1,355 miles. Split amongst a dozen or so
different bikes.

Next to my e-bike the next highest mileage total was on the Eastern Growler,
26" BMX Cruiser I call Big Baby, because she's pink. 226 miles
3rd surprisingly is my Clementine @ 223 miles! I say surprisingly, because I
just don't feel like I ride it that much and less than I otherwise would
because it's too awkwardly big to take on the train.
4th. Crust Bombora, well honestly when you consider I've only been riding this
a few months this year it really should be like #2 I ride it ALL THE TIME! I
ride it so much that I make a concerted effort to ride other bikes, just so
they get ridden.

Of note the next in mileage is my stainless steel SOMA Triple Cross. Notable,
because even though I don't ride it as often as I'd like when I do ride it,
it's typically on the more epic range. 20+ miles per trip.

The down side of having quite a few bikes, is that some don't get ridden more.
My Atlantis would probably be up near the top, except it spent a considerable
time with a rear flat thats resisted fixing.

Oddly my mileage has dropped for reasons that seem somewhat contradictory; I
got laid off from my job that was 13.4 miles from my house and the new job is
16.3 miles from the house. The rub is that this additional 3 miles each way
adds considerable time & effort to a commute that was already challenging. This
was one reason I got the E-bike and why it's chocked up so many miles. I just
couldn't spend the time to ride to work as much.😥

Anywayz, what's your story?

that was very simple. This app -- Panobike+ in the current version -- has
been updated for the iPhone. I am not able to speak to its availability
for Android phones. If you find it available, it is simple and clear. Good

Dear Matt,

Studded snows are the only effective answer to glare or black sheet ice. They
are heavy tires with stiff casings to support the studs, and are horrible to
ride on clear pavement as a result. I hate to ride them until I desperately
need them.

For other snowbound conditions (slush, loose snow, car snot, most ruts)
widely-spaced knobbies with light casings are better-riding.

[RBW] Re: Snow and Brisk Riding Tips

2019-12-31 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Mat! Will nailed it. Studs are the way to go for significant glazed
snow pack and smooth ice, but at quite a price. For my winter riding where
I live glaze and sheet ice are largely avoidable via picking a different
line, walking a section, taking a less traveled route, or simply waiting
for it it either snow or melt, so I stick with plush knobbies. In general I
encounter glaze and sheet on the trail (easily walked around) or on the
forrested backroads in town that don't get plowed (I take the MUP). Worth
noting is that snowpack and glaze can look similar with low angle sun, so
knowing the conditions (temp, history of temp and snow) and feel (easily
assessed with fixed, hard with free wheel) goes a long way to knowing what
you'll encounter. Wisconsin conditions are likely different than alpine
Colorado, with longer stretches of cold that facilitate glaze on well
trafficked roads. Given a day or two around here, most glaze and sheet ice
are either melted or snowed over (give time for the snow to amalgamate with
the ice beneath), so a near non-issue.

With abandon,
Patrick

2019-12-31 Thread Patrick Moore
1852 miles after today's 33 mile ride. I have long suffered from chronic
depression, and thus ride the equivalent of about half the weeks in a year,
with the added complication that, after a layoff, recovery now takes longer
when you are old. I managed to do 4K/year back when I commuted across town
to an office job, and my goal nowadays is 3K/year. Still, I'm rather proud
of the 1852 (that includes just shy of 200 miles on the hopefully
soon-to-be-sold Dahon Hon Solo, most -- not all -- of which were very short
grocery and dog-run trips.

The depression is simply a fact of life to be dealth with and things could
be far, far worse, so no more about that. I'm just glad I got as many very
pleasant miles in as I did this past year. *And* I think I put well under
1K miles on my car (tho' my daughter add ~2.5K; ~1700 since last oil change
at 6/24/19, almost all my daughter's. I live within ~10 miles of just about
everything I need, and in pleasant riding conditions; thank God.

- 3 new gates closing off forest service roads to private property. Ah, the

privilege of access and simply shut it down.
- Countless old Colorado "self service" gates that allow access and ask
only curtesy, including closing it behind you ... assuming you can puzzle
out how to 1. open it and 2. close it again. Some of these have been there
for over seventy years.
- 100% of the days my. brain allowed me to ride, I rode.
- 80% of milage was blessed active contemplative prayer; 20% were attempts
to reach such a state. Not bad, room to improve. Grin.
- Unknown word count produced at the writers' nooks.
- 95% of rides I returned better than I left.
- 100% of rides I paid zero attention to stats, and only on bikepacking
trips did I care about milage (sort of) for sustainability and navigation
(map and compass).
- 3-4 times did I use my phone GPS app (Gaia GPS, with Trail Illustrated
Maps), zero of those proved more helpful than paper map and compass.
- 1 phone map subscription canceled. Grin.
- 100% of my rides and milage were delightful and with wild abandon, one
way or another, perhaps most especially the overextended ones at the end of
the day after unexpected reroutes just hoping to find a place to pitch me
tent. Grin.

Happy and blessed New Year! May God startle you with joy!

I've used the free version of Cyclemeter for 5+ years, and it works well on
my old iPhone5s (don't think the app has been updated for several years). I
tried Strava and found it too complicated; tried another popular free
cycling app and Cyclemeter does more and is easier to use.

As a speedometer in the proper sense, where you see real-time speed, yes it
works like that too if you strap it to your bar and turn off the "auto-off"
feature on your phone. It does wear down the battery fast, though; 33 miles
this morning, and I went from ~98% charge to 66% at the end of the ride.
The speed/distance display is large and easy to read, at least on an
iPhone, and at least for whatever version of the app is the latest for the
iPhone 5.

Re: [RBW] An Atlantis is on the Top Ten Beautiful Bikes of 2019 list

2019-12-31 Thread Patrick Moore
I have to say that the Atlantis, the WWPWD, and the Tracklcross, just
maybe, maybe, the Black Cat, are pretty bikes, but the others -- meh. They
may be outstanding bikes, but IMO they don't have outstanding looks.

But of the 3 or 5 "pretty" ones, I have to say that the Atlantis stands
head and shoulders higher; I don't particularly want a double top tube on
any bike I own, curved or straight, but no one can deny that's a pretty
frame.

I had a good year even with lots of challenging weather here in Minneapolis
(polar vortex temps down to -30 and the wettest year in recorded history).
Managed a bit over 8,000 miles, about 20% of those miles were commuting to
the office. I would guess another 20% were on non-paved surfaces (snow,
gravel or dirt). I've been using Strava to track mileage and hours since
sometime in 2013. It’s been fun!

[RBW] Hauling a 7' Ski Pole by Hunqapillar

2019-12-31 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Tips? In a few days my Hok skis and Tiak (the 7' pole) arrive and I'll be
biking to the slopes, aka the hiking trails and any fun looking bits I find.
Ideas for bettering my current plan:

Strap the pole to headset/down tube in front, angling down under the saddlesack
and strapping again to the rear rack. Skis, at only 4' long will be strapped
atop the saddlesack. Straps will be a combo of rubber Voile straps or Irish
straps.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-31 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I hope you get it all squared away, Mas.

I am sitting in an airport, waiting to leave snow country and land in Nevada,
where my Clem sits parked at home. It occurs to me I ought to update the thread
to report back what I recently discovered re: my Saris bike rack. The new Clems
don’t have a listed wheelbase, and I hadn’t thought a thing about it until I
tried to put it on my Saris Freedom bike rack. It’s too long.

If your bike’s wheelbase is over 48 inches (and if the correct measuring is hub
to hub, it is) then you need to buy a $99 longer bar to haul your bike. The
bike somehow fits on my old Hollywood 2 bike rack. I think this is worth
considering if you want to bring your bike on public transportation or drive it
somewhere and ride it. I road trip up north every summer and will absolutely
have to replace the bar if I want to take my Clem. I never considered my bike
could be too long for my rack; I’m supposing plenty of other folks might not
have, either.

So, Happy New Year. You’re getting a new rack!

[RBW] Re: 2019 stats? Post'em if ya got'em

2019-12-31 Thread Fullylugged
3833 road miles plus some neighborhood noodling that doesn't get logged.
renovelo-ed the Rambouillet (bought new at RBW in 2006) as an upright townie
and the Road as a light racy short brevet bike. Both are smashing successes.
About 1,000 miles each on the Riv Road (frame came from this list in 2008 or 9)
and Waterford RS-12 (frame came from this list in 2018). About 900 on an '83
Maruishi made 650B conversion (bike came from this list in 2008, can you sense
a pattern here?) and 777 on the Ram. Over 56K miles since realizing in 2001 as
an out of shape and overweight adult that I needed to get off the couch. Best
by far has been the friendships forged all over the region where I live and
seeing the power of a bike to draw diverse people together over a shared love
and find out that no matter who they are, they have other shared interests to
talk about.

Next big thing is the Selma55 ride 2/22/20. I co-organized the ride 5 yrs ago
for Selma50, and am a helper this year. People from all over the US are coming,
and there are lots of come-ups to handle. 2019 was a good year for our RUSA
region and we look for growth in 2020, including a new 600K route that I think
will be very popular. Our 1st 100 & 200 rides are this Saturday so no time lost
in that area.

Riding 50 miles on wet roads and coming back all sand splattered on Saturday
finally got me started on installing some smooth and shiny Honjos that have
been in the box in the attic for God only knows how long.

Wishing all my fellow Riv-sters a happy and healthy 2020, and lots of bike time.

A relevant aside. At a pee stop during this morning's ride, I talked to an
older man riding a tadpole recumbent. He had been an avid cyclist but had a
stroke about 6 years ago, so he bought his tadpole. Retired, he rode 7,500
miles this past year.

[RBW] Appreciation for my 1998 LongLow

2019-12-31 Thread BSWP
I'm just back from a 215 mile loop out of Berkeley on my first Rivendell, a
65cm LongLow. We went to Point Reyes (over the RSR bridge!) then on to
Tomales, where it's freezing cold at night but the saloon is hopping. Then
a grunt out to Bodega Bay and second breakfast in Jenner, before meandering
up the Russian River to Rio Nido for beer, and family hospitality in
Heraldsburg. The rain came early, but relented enough to give us dry road
into Calistoga, before hammering us the entire length of Silverado Trail,
to an overpriced motel in Napa. Final day was like autopilot back through
Vallejo and on down into Berkeley.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclemoss/albums/72157712451755936

and

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31483686

The LongLow has its original Phil hubs, and six-speed freewheel, half-step
+ granny triple, simple Shimano 105 shifters, and nitto stem. It started
with M'bars, but I've been riding on Noodles for five years now, and prefer
them for long tours. The brakes are now "mini" Vees, and I very much like
the Tektro interruptor levers. My luggage system is a basic Wald basket up
front, with Sackville ShopSack, and a new-ish Banana bag under the saddle.
For true camping, I have a stout Nitto rack and Ortliebs, this ride, I left
the lightweight Nitto on, to carry beer or wine in case we needed extra
capacity. Tires are now 35mm Compass something-something pass... very soft
and forgiving, but still quite fast.

I love the ride, so smooth and stable, and I can just pedal all day in
comfort (except or my neck, it gets tired looking up, so I often go a few
hundred feet looking down at the white shoulder line). There's a QuickBeam
in my stable, and a new Riv-ish frame still to be painted and assembled
(Rohloff meets MAFAC Racer), but I always enjoy this ride. Many thanks to
Grant & crew for getting the frame sized right, and keeping me going.

I had a down year. After 5000 miles in 2018 I had been shooting for 6200 miles
(10,000 km) but did not come close. I rode 2450 miles, most of it commuting. I
hope to get back on track for 2020. My highlight may be that I rode a ton of
bikes with not a ton of miles on any of them. My stable is massive and dialed
right now, which is a good place to be.

I was glad to visit John's shop on my riding visit to Portland. I think
