[RBW] Re: New Bike Day! Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-03-15 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Bill mentioned he purchased the CX 70 brakes from Rivendell a while back.
The CX 70 model was discontinued, and just about every place is out of back
stock as well. A while ago I had a bead on a set somewhere, but delayed in
ordering (less than a day) and poof! I ended up with a pair in trade, but
had to sell the bike they were slated for--coincidentally the BG Hikari
that Bill alerted me to. I wanted the CX 70 because they come with a washer
set that lets them adjust to canti posts that run as close as 90mm--the
spread on the Hikari fork, not atypical of that vintage.

Riv still carries the CX 50, slightly less refined but similar. Otherwise,
you are probably looking at the second hand market, unless a retailer finds
a stash somewhere. None listed on ebay at the moment.

[RBW] New Bike Day! Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-03-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
Jonathan D asked where I place this bike in my lineup

Second hook from the right.

Jonathan D asked for me to compare the ride vs Rivs and my Black Mountain Road.

I only buy framesets that fit me. I know the numbers well enough and myself
well enough that I can always grab something that fits. I’ve done a LOT of
builds for myself over the last decade and it’s gotten a little boring that I
do a build, get on the bike for a first ride and it’s “yep, perfect again”.
Anyhow this is a perfect fitting bike for rides that I feel like doing on a
full rigid drop bar mountain bike. My Black Mountain Road is a perfect fitting
bike for rides I feel like doing on a stripped down road racing bike. My Rivs
each have their little “mood niche” as well. My Hillborne is set up to be my
brevet bike. My two Rosco Bubbes are set up to be Bart bikes. They all fit
perfectly and all ride well and I choose one based on mood. I don’t think of my
stable in terms of ‘better’ or ‘worse’, and for as much as I know about bikes,
I’m not as sensitive as the trail zealots or the planing zealots. I expect that
may not be a satisfying answer.

[RBW] New Bike Day! Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-03-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
John W asked how I arrived at brake placement.

I installed the cantilever brakes DIRECTLY onto the cantilever brake posts. 😝.
Maybe you meant something else? Brake lever placement was an educated guess
based on the assumption that 100% of off road downhill braking will be done
from the drops.

As others noted, when CX70s went out of production I took note. I stocked up
with three sets. Now two of the three sets are on bikes and I’m getting a
little antsy about that.

Rivendell might become one of the last bastions of rim brakes. Great drivetrain
parts are plentiful, but brakelevers rims and brakes are getting scarce. Winter
is coming...

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day! Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-03-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
Aha, by ‘brake placement’ , John W meant ‘shift lever placement’.

I placed them as wide as the 31.8mm section of the Salsa Cowchipper bars would
allow. I chose the Salsa Cowchipper bars because the 31.8mm sleeve is quite
wide. I decided against normal bar-con placement because they are flared drops
and didn’t want them sticking out.

If I find that I want to do a lot of mountain biking, I might want to switch to
a clutch rear der to mitigate chain slap. If I do that, I may switch to a SRAM
10-sp Brifter on the right hand side.

[RBW] FS: RBW Protovelo Road Bike - 57.5cm

2018-03-15 Thread jandrews_nyc

57.5cm Protovelo road bike for sale:

Note - Saddle, Rear saddle-bag, Pedals, Bell and Bottle Cage aren’t
included

This is a fun, light and nimble bike looking for a new home. The frame is
somewhat of an odd duck. I *believe* that this was a prototype for the San
Marcos in terms of geometry. I purchased it from Kevin at Riv in about
2012. I was interested in buying a Roadeo and they posted this frameset and
I purchased it instead. I also *believe* that it has a Roadeo fork from
Toyo in JP. It’s a slender, nicely curved fork with cream dropouts and no
mounting bosses mid-fork. (the seat stays have typical Riv bosses, 2 at the
dropouts and one mid-stay and one by the seat cluster)

The odd thing about this frameset is it has Hilborne headtube lugs and a
Homer bottom bracket shell. Also, odd-duckishly, the front fork takes a
medium-reach caliper and the rear brake is a long-reach. I *believe* the
frame was U.S. made. Also, I *believe* the color is "RBW Blue".

The sizing was listed as 57.5cm and that’s the measurement for both the
seat tube and the top tube.

Rear spacing is 130mm.

My PBH is 84.5 and this bike was just a smidge big for me but never ever a
real issue. When I'm standing with feet firmly on the ground the top tube
is right up there but workable.
The reach on this bike is great compared to my too-long top tube
first-generation Hillborne which is 56/59!

I built this bike up as a go-fast road bike and while it served that
purpose very well, that’s not the type of riding I really do. I ride my
much much heavier Hillborne more or my off-road singlespeed.

The wheels are very nice, built by Anthony King. - White Industries T11
polished 28h laced to IRD “Cadence” lightweight rims.. Rear is “VSR” or
offset. Both have wheelsmith spokes. (42 Wheelsmith XL14 2.0/1.5/2.0
 Silver Spoke w/ Brass Nipples & 14 Wheelsmith DB14 2.0/1.7/2.0 Silver
Spoke w/ Silver Brass Nipples)

Tires are Jack Brown Greens with plenty of life left

Cream longboard fenders

SRAM Apex mini-group - Front and Rear Derailleurs as well as a SRAM
cassette (11-32 10spd) & chain and Apex “double tap” shifter/levers

Crankset - NOS (when I installed it) - 170mm Sugino AT with Specialities TA
“Syrius” 50/34 10 speed chainrings {122.5 UN52 bb)

Bars are Mark’s “Dream Bar” in heat treated 46cm by Nitto.

Stem is 9cm Tech Deluxe

Wrapped in black Newbaums.

Headset is FSA that Riv uses.

Brakes - Rear Tektro R559, Front Tektro R538

Seatpost - Thomson “Elite” , black - no offset.

CLEARANCE: The bike is running JB greens with longboard fenders. I think it
would probably run Barlow Pass 38's without fenders but I haven't tested
that. After doing some research by the numbers, I *believe* that Paul
Racers (not M's) would handle the difference of the long reach in the back
and med reach in the front and allow for a little more clearance ...but I
haven't personally tested that.

Issues:  {pics attached for all this}

There are few small chips in the paint. , the most offensive being on the
downtube just below the water bottle cage. There is also a small one on
the top tube as well as a couple small ones on the inside of the non-drive
side chain stay.

Also, there is a bolt stuck in the bottom of the two rack/fender mounting
bosses on the non-drive side rear dropout. The head came off a bolt.
***Note, the threads aren’t stripped. Just the bolt is in and I can’t get
it out without drilling it out, and I currently don’t have a quality drill.
Shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Never bothered me since I just moved
the fender mounting up to the higher bosses.

I can send pics of those if you’re really interested.

I'd prefer to sell this bike locally , but shipping is possible at buyers
expense.

I'm in the Hudson Valley of Upstate New York but can easily meet in NYC
with the bike.

My already discounted pricing is $1500.

Please know that when I say "I *believe*", I'm giving you my honest though
process based on speaking to employee at RBW and being a good steward of
the bike for the past 5 or so years, but I can't confirm those statements
100% and I may be mistaken.

Photos below and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Update: Thank you all so much for your help. They did turn out to be the
wrong levers, so my LBS switched them out using the Ray "keep the clamp,
switch the levers" Varella trick, and all is good.

Long pull levers sure do make a big difference with V brakes. Haha.

[RBW] 1x11 Sam Hillborne with a 50t rear cog

2018-03-15 Thread James / Analog Cycles
We just about finished up this Sam Hillborne for John S. He'll use it
primarily for commuting, but also for the occasional light tour. It's got
a bunch of Riv un-approved bits, but here at Analog we're pretty fond of
tubeless tires, bigger than VP pedals, and 1x drivetrains. Of course, not
every bike goes out with that stuff!

It's about to get a trouser guard for the outer chainring, as well as a Big
Nitto rear rack.

For gear inch nerd: it's roughly 85 on the high side and 18.7 on the low
side. 36t ring.

jandrews_nyc asked about my PBH and the shifter setup.

My saddle height is 75.5cm. I dont remember if my PBH is 86 or 86.5.

The cable adjusters are part of the Paul Thumbies. Shimano barcons have no
cable adjusters. The shiftlever part comes of the barcon pods and mounts
onto the Thumbie.

Yes, Rock and Roads will go on next, most likely. I wanted to confirm that

I'd own it for the rest of my life, but it turns out that it just doesn't
fit the type of riding I'm doing as well as I thought it would. It is one
of the more beautiful frames I've ever put my eyes on and when I purchased
it I painstakingly cleaned the frame and carefully touched up all the chips
with matching enamel paint (first sign that I'm not a true "Riv guy").

The paint is darker blue than the current Homer and anyone that is paying
attention knows that the AHH has gone through a lot of hues of blue over
the years. I was also missing the brifter index shifting from my sportier
road bike, so Homer's bar end shifters got swapped for a full Shimano
Ultegra 6500 triple groupset (second sign that I'm not a true Riv believer)
which I believe to be the last classically beautiful group that Shimano
produced. I don't need to go into how great these frames are and how well
they handle, or how beautiful they are, but I will say that the size 59
frame was on the verge of being too big for my 5'11" frame, but it was
still comfortable for a couple of 100 mile plus rides that I did on it. The
larger than normal sizing and the low seat post was one Grantism that I do
believe in for this bike which made it extremely comfortable for long rides.

Further details on the build are a full Nitto cockpit & seatpost including
46cm Noodle handlebars wrapped with brooks honey leather tape that could
use some moisturizing but still has plenty of life. A set of classic
Rivendell wheels: Rich-built, Phil-hubbed (NLA), Synergy Velocity rimmed,
36 spoke wheels with a Shimano 12/27 9 speed cassette. Jagwire silver
cables throughout and Tektro R556 Sidepull brakes.

The bike recently had a service from the top notch local shop including a
replacement of the shift cables.

Seeing as the groupset is not very "rivish", I'm happy to sell the bike
minus the groupset, but I would prefer to sell complete. I will probably
shed a few tears as I tape up the box on this one, but this is a bike that
deserves to be ridden hard and often and I'm not doing that.

Complete $2700
Less Shimano groupset, but including everything else, wheels, cockpit, etc.
$2300

Will consider frame only, but prefer to sell complete

Prices do not including shipping or fees. Located in Charlottesville, VA
and happy to deal locally.
