Re: [RBW] Re: what skewer please?

2016-11-21 Thread Tim Gavin
Yeah, I'm using a skewer from a Shimano Deore XT M730 hub (circa '88) with
the SP PD-8 hub on my Foundry Auger. Fits perfectly, looks clunky, I love
it.

The beefy internal cam clamps much more securely than the cheap external
cam skewer I got with the wheels. Very important with disc brakes.

[RBW] RBW Website - Riv Staff bike builds

It appears that they didn't make the transition. Too bad, it was nice to see
all the different ways to build up the Riv bikes. I hope they bring it over to
the new site. For now, you can see them on the old site via the Internet
wayback site.

[RBW] Drop bars for a kid: help me out.

2016-11-21 Thread Edwin W
I got a little Clem for my kids last year when they came out. It is a great
bike. My oldest son has been riding it BUT has just been so enamored by
drop bars on bikes whenever he sees them. He does not QUITE appreciate how
cool his bob-ish setup on the Clem is, no matter how many times the bike
shop staff or I tell him!
Right now we have VO tourist bars
 on
an 80mm stem.
Question - if I want to have him try drop bars should I:

Put some drops on the Clem, with a dirt drop style or shorter stem

or is it too long in the top tube and not practical and not what it was
designed for and:

Get a small used drop bar bike off of CL and let him play around with that?

Thoughts from this smart group??

[RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-21 Thread John M
Patrick,

I think you alone understand what you are looking for and how best to
scratch the itch. However, if I found myself in your position, I might
give a call to Ken Wallace at the Bisbee Bicycle Brothel
, in Bisbee Arizona. He's
got more vintage frames and bikes than I have ever seen under one roof.
Though, they probably won't cost less than a new Matthews custom (does he
really charge $1200?).

I'm less than 3 hours from Bisbee and swing through ABQ routinely. Let me
know if I can help you spend your money!

[RBW] Re: Drop bars for a kid: help me out.

2016-11-21 Thread Jeremy Tavan
Clem's got a very long top tube, but I suspect a shorter-reach drop bar on
a short stem could work, particularly for those with longer torsos. Have
you looked at things like the Fairweather/Nitto MOD174? It's kind of a
scaled-down Noodle. I know from working on fit for my wife's Clementine
that those Nitto quill stems come in very short lengths! Note that you'll
have to select one of the less-common long-pull road brake levers or use
travel agents on the linear pull brakes, but that can actually work well.
We've got reverse levers and travel agents on my wife's bike and the power
and modulation are quite good.

I don't see any reason why drops would be inappropriate on the Clem if the
reach can be made to work. It's a versatile bike, and I think preserving
your son's enthusiasm and letting him make the bike even more "his" through
customizing it sounds like a great idea.

[RBW] Re: RBW Website - Riv Staff bike builds

2016-11-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
Igor asked about a Staff Bikes Gallery on rivbike.com.

Presumably there is something specific you are looking for. If there is,
then you should be able to use the wayback machine to locate the page you
are after. If you don't know what the wayback machine is, it's a website
that takes internet snapshots of a large percentage of the entire internet.
If you know the url you care about, and you know roughly when in time you
want a snapshot of that url, then you can browse for it on the wayback
machine. If you just want to idly browse through photographs of Rivendells
because its diverting, then the wayback machine won't be fun for you,
particularly if you don't know what it is or how to use it. For idle
browsing of Rivendell photos, there's always flickr. If you specifically
and exclusively demand a browsable Staff Bikes Gallery and only want to
find it on rivbike.com, then 'Cannot locate' was a correct statement.
There is no such gallery on the new site. If you want to determine
whether there will be, call in and ask Dave, perhaps. Whenever I move,
it's an opportunity to shed clutter, and maybe they did the same thing.

[RBW] ISO Frame Repair and Mods on Riv, who have you used?

2016-11-21 Thread Jim Bronson
I need to get my top tube replaced, it's rusting to the point of, I don't
feel confident on it anymore. Someone from this forum actually noted such
about 9 months ago when I posted a pre-baby pic at a local watering hole.

I was also thinking of getting some mods done like crimping the seatstays
for 650x42B, I'm currently 650B converted and using LoupLoups; want to go
up to Babyshoes Pass. More adventurous might be to get a low(er) trail
fork for it and have provisions for Paul or Compass brakes added. I guess
it depends on how much that stuff costs. If it's too much, might want to
just do the basic repair, paint and then get a new frame.

[RBW] Making fenders fit at the bottom bracket area?

2016-11-21 Thread lum gim fong
I heard one should not cut aluminium fenders, so:

1.how do I get my 650b Honjos to fit in between the cs at the bb?

2. Just squish them together til they fit like when changing the radius of
the fender?

3. Is it ok for them to touch the stays or will they rub a groove into them?

4. How about steel Berthoud fenders? How to make them fit?

Thanks for the info.

I don't want SKS fenders. Just aluminum. Maybe Berthouds.

[RBW] Re: How to crash by yourself

2016-11-21 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Ian,
Those are Stampede Pass, 32mm, and nothing larger will fit - have a few mm
clearance on the chainstays. As parts came off the old frame I cleaned
them, and before they went on the new frame I polished them.
My Honjos were destroyed with the old frame - I saved all the good hardware
for later. I already had two sets of shorty fenders around. These
stainless which will fit 35mm or bigger, and some really pretty Bluemels
alloy with blue foil decal that only fit 28mm.
What they do is keep the CP brakes clean, which have a lot of places for
dirt.

Just finished up over the weekend, and made short adjustment rides around
the neighborhood yesterday.
Made my ride maiden today - both for my busted bones and my new
International. I rode 25 greenway miles. Rode my normal pace the whole way,
just a bit shorter distance than I usually ride.
My ribs did hurt when I was pedaling, and my shoulders when I got off.
But it's good for me...

Something else I used on this bike - King Cages with their stud-welded hose
clamps

I had strips of Brooks bar leather left over from two bar wraps (6 years
apart) - used them underneath the umbrella clip to secure the frame fit
pump (this worked for 6000 mi on the other frame) and underneath the King
Cage hose clamps.

80cm is already a pretty short stem for a pullback bar..I'm not sure you'll be
able to get a dropbar on there that he can reach. Plus if he's enamored of the
road bikes he's seeing, he may be interested in more than just the bars. I
would recommend finding something used with brifters and see how he takes to
it.

[RBW] Re: Want a San Marcos!

2016-11-21 Thread Ashwath Akirekadu
Actually I had emailed BicycleClassics before opening this thread. For
many many days I received no response. Just about when I had given up
hopes of finding a new frame, I heard back. It was quite a pleasant
surprise. The only disappointment was the fork. The version I received
does not have eyelets for mini rack. A mini-rack was part of my original
plan (I prefer them over the other versions purely for the looks).

The frame arrived last weekend. In the process of ordering parts. Last
night I ordered Veloce 10 speed groupset from http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk

Going to buy several parts directly from Rev (doing my part to support what
they do)

No I had not run into your post on internetbob (until now I did not know
about that group!)

Re: [RBW] Want a San Marcos!

2016-11-21 Thread Ashwath Akirekadu
Sorry about the delay coming back here. Yes, I've managed to find one!!

As for pictures, of course. How can I not not post pictures of the build!
Been busy with work, so it might take a couple of weeks.

Why not Ram or Rodeo, being new to the word of Rivendell, I don't know a
whole lot about those bikes. I stumbled upon a blog that talked about SM
build. That got my interest because of aesthetics and the upright
geometry. Somebody had suggested Sam. I was mentally prepared to buy a
Sam frame.

[RBW] Re: Drop bars for a kid: help me out.

2016-11-21 Thread Sky Coulter
Our ten year old son is pretty athletic and was insistent on getting drop
bars. I was pretty dubious, but thought it was worth the effort and bought
him an old trek 520:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/140959259@N03/25082999224/in/dateposted-public/

The fit was pretty terrible and he didn't feel confident on the bike and I
was worried it just wasn't going to work out for him. Then I bought a small
long haul trucker frame off an ibob member and transferred most of the
parts from the 520 over while adding some more:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/140959259@N03/27626962340/in/dateposted-public/

Since then, he's going up and down curbs with aplomb; mounting and
dismounting while the bike is in motion and biking to school everyday (the
only bike at the racks when I go past the school).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if your son wants to ride drops and
you want to encourage him to take after you in a love of cycling, I think
it's worth it to build up a bike specifically for drops so that he's
comfortable and develops confidence. The long haul trucker frame I bought
for my son is one of if not my best biking investment.

[RBW] Re: Drop bars for a kid: help me out.

2016-11-21 Thread Abcyclehank
Edwin
The fact you treated your kids to a small Clem is truly a generous gift. The
best gift I ever purchased for my young son was a 43cm Cannondale R500 w 650c
wheels. It had Shimano 105 components and drop bars and he road the shit out of
that bike. Flew like the wind and carved his love for cycling.
Either option is good, and I suggest just being honest with him and see what is
preference is.
Trying dropped bars on the Clem may work despite the the designed longer than
usual top tube because it proportionally gets greater as each size increases;
also the flexibility of young whippersnappers can surprise one and only he can
tell you "he is physically comfortable".
I would mention your willingness to try it but emphasis the designed purpose
and offer an inexpensive drop bar bike in his size too. His eyes and response
will tell you far more than our personal bias and opinions.
If together you decide to go with a second bike figure out again with his input
an appropriate size. Small enough to handle safely yet big enough to handle a
growth spurt. Stand over is important but less so than adults--again because
of flexibility factors and desire/willingness to look the part.

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

P.S. Personal Message me once you find a desired size range. I may have
something to consider that is otherwise waiting for a grandchild who is not
even born yetI think I have a bike problem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the replies. I'll keep a sharp eye out for a good old racing
frame from the pre-crit era with horizontal dropouts and bad paint, for
cheap. And if anyone has more personal experience comparing particular
makes/models with Rivendell road models, I'd like to hear from him/her.

I think I'll prefer a racing bike for the lighter tubing and fewer braze
ons; this will be a dedicated, retro-style gofast bike (of a sort; I'm not
very fast, but I do like light bikes). I don't need the braze ons; I've got
2 other bikes with full braze ons.

Why a separate bike for the AM hub? Because why not? More particularly, it
would be nice to have it match somewhat the period of the hub. Craig, if
you read this, the AM is very definitely *not* a substitute for a TF!

I'll use wheels appropriate to the frame, which if it is used and meets my
other criteria will be 700C.

Ray: what exactly do you mean by "it rides naively"? I can live with French
threading for a top line Motobecane, though of course I'd prefer English.
Rather wish I'd kept the Motobecane I once owned.

John -- thanks. I'm not quite ready yet, though I'll keep the Brothel in
mind. Just ended up paying more than I had anticipated for the Matthews
crank conversion (but it will be nice!) I'm hoping for another deal as with
the Motobecane: $25 on eBay with $30-40 shipping.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Shifting parts

2016-11-21 Thread JohnS
Hello Eric,

I hope you like you're 1x7 setup as much as I do on my '12 Salsa Casseroll.
I'm using a CS-HG50 cassette (13,15,17,20,24,29,34), a 44 Sugino chain
ring, Deore XT Integrated 8 SIS derailleur, 105 7 SIS down tube shifter and
a better quality Shimano 6/7/8 speed chain, something like a HG70. All
works great together, no ghost shifting, wide gear range, no gearing over
lap, no front derailleur rub/trimming. One thing that I tried to do was to
align the middle cog with the chain ring and to set that gear inch close to
the cruising gear on my QB. This way the deflection from center to smallest
cog is about equal to the deflection from center to largest cog. I've found
that I'm usually on the middle cog or one up most of the time. I also
recommend using a crank with 110 or 130 BCD so that it's easy/cheap to get
a smaller or bigger ring should you need to bump the gearing one way or the
other. I initially tired a 46 chain ring, but it felt a little too hard
with the 20 tooth cog, whereas when I tired the 44, it was just right.

Good luck and happy trials,
JohnS

PS - Yes, I know those are some big jumps in gearing which may cause
distress for some, but I like'm.

Re: [RBW] Re: Want a San Marcos!

2016-11-21 Thread Tim Gavin
You could use a Nitto M1 or M18 and run extra long stays down to the fender
eyelets.
