Hello Eric, I hope you like you're 1x7 setup as much as I do on my '12 Salsa Casseroll. I'm using a CS-HG50 cassette (13,15,17,20,24,29,34), a 44 Sugino chain ring, Deore XT Integrated 8 SIS derailleur, 105 7 SIS down tube shifter and a better quality Shimano 6/7/8 speed chain, something like a HG70. All works great together, no ghost shifting, wide gear range, no gearing over lap, no front derailleur rub/trimming. One thing that I tried to do was to align the middle cog with the chain ring and to set that gear inch close to the cruising gear on my QB. This way the deflection from center to smallest cog is about equal to the deflection from center to largest cog. I've found that I'm usually on the middle cog or one up most of the time. I also recommend using a crank with 110 or 130 BCD so that it's easy/cheap to get a smaller or bigger ring should you need to bump the gearing one way or the other. I initially tired a 46 chain ring, but it felt a little too hard with the 20 tooth cog, whereas when I tired the 44, it was just right.
Good luck and happy trials, JohnS PS - Yes, I know those are some big jumps in gearing which may cause distress for some, but I like'm.
