RBW called it "yellowish green" It is slightly iridescent as well. A nice

Taiwan was a solution for the rising cost of Japanese frames. Currency
values wrecked havoc on RBW's cash flow and were mentioned several times in
GP's op ed bits. Toyo and Waterford were presented as equals, quality wise.
Toyo forks or toyo supervised forks were used on Taiwan frames, iirc.

[RBW] Re: New Olive ACW Mugs, new coffee? What kind of coffee/gear do you take on the bike?

2015-07-04 Thread Pondero
Coffee rides are probably my favorite rides, and I do these so often I have
a rotation of gear that I use...for the sake of variety...

Bike: Atlantis, Hilsen, or Quickbeam
Bag: Carradice Barley, Carradice Low Saddle Long Flap, Saddlesack
Coffee: Usually dark roasts (low acid) from various sources
Stove: Trangia
Grinder: Porlex
Ignition: Kitchen matches, but I'd like to up my game here
Brewer: Bialetti Moka, AeroPress, Pourover
Mug: ACW, custom "Pondero" gift mug from my daughter
Accoutrements: Small plastic bottle to hold fuel. Also "Life is a
Beautiful Ride" with bicycle graphic hand-towel from my other daughter.
Bandanna. Pocket knife.
Food: Sweets, often its Pop Tarts (not proud of this), but sometimes I'll
pickup a couple of donuts along the way.
Comfort: Occasionally I'll take the hammock if my brew-up spot has trees.
NEED: Some way to make iced coffee for blazing summer rides

Looking forward to seeing other's approaches to this.

uses.

Bike: Elephant NFE or Simpleone
Cookset: snowpeak stove, pot, spork, and double wall mug
Brewer: aeropress with able reusable filter
Grinder: porlex minimill, love this thing.
Coffee: pretty much changes weekly based on what's fresh from mostly local
roasteries.
Bags: swift ozette xl or wald basket with shopsack and a super sweet sea to
summit packing cell that fits everything perfectly.
Extras: bandana, phone timer

2015-07-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Sorry to disappoint, Erl, I've been climbing out a pit for a while. I'm
hoping to get back out there in earnest soon.

Ha, Liesl! no worries on fireworks in recent years for budget and fire
danger reasons. That may change again one of these years. Interestingly,
thunder is a wondrous feeling to have rolling through me (we have a
glorious boomer pelting us now, dropping us from 81˚F to 55˚F.).

With abandon,

If Doug writes that book, I'll edit it and lay it out for print.
That could be an interesting app, right? A guide book that could update in real

Photos, nearby tourists, current conditions...
Maybe it's just a blog, or an Instagram hashtag,

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Bleriot: your take on it.

2015-07-04 Thread Dave Johnston
I have a 56cm Ram and a 57cm Bleriot with similar drop bar setups. I had
28mm tires on the Ram and have pari-moto 38mm tires on the Bleriot. Once I
got the Bleriot up and running I basically stopped riding the Ram. The
Pari-motos are so smooth and fast so the extra width doesn't seem to be a
disadvantage. The Bleriot has an ultralight Tubas Luna rear rack while the
Ram is rackless so sometimes the ability to hall more stuff swings me to
use that bike as well.

answers
1. Ram is a bit quicker handling but both feel great. I actually prefer the
more mellow handling of the Bleriot.
2. 700c Ram has toeclip overlap. 650b Bleriot does not.
3. Never ran either with a front load, other than one of the small acorn
barsacks, and I don't notice that bag.

Years ago I recall reading an article entitled "In Praise of the Short
Ride" or similar. It was a counterpoint to the notion that one had to
pound out some serious miles to benefit from cycling. Even a single digit
ride can be refreshing, invigorating and generally head clearing. Just
riding is worth just doing.

Depends on how much prep is necessary for the ride. If you're going to
put on sunscreen, change into riding shorts & jersey & riding shoes,
anything under about 25 miles is IMHO a waste of time, especially since
it requires a shower when you get home to get the sunscreen off. (At
least, I have to - I'm sensitive to it, but with my lifetime sun
exposure history not using it simply isn't an option.) Even worse if
you're going to pack up the car and drive to the ride start. If
you're leaving from home and don't have to change clothes, shorter
distances are fine; short enough and you may not even have to put on
sunscreen (although I doubt that's the case in the New Mexico desert).

2015-07-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I've never used sunscreen in my life, except once or twice at the
insistence of my then wife, a practice I very quickly abandoned. I agree
it's a nasty mess. And I lived largely outside as a boy in India and at 5-6
K feet in equatorial Africa, not to mention 25+ years of riding in NM.

I rely on my Filipino skin, but my almost excessively Anglo father -- he
made most Brits look like Sicilians -- did as much and more than I in the
hottest parts of the world and lived well past 80.

For me, prep means changing into a jersey, putting on socks and cycling
shoes (I don't wear outdoor shoes indoors, so I'd have to put on shoes
anyway), putting on a hat and shades, and going outside. I shower once a
day and rarely after a ride.

I know all too many cyclists (folks I know personally, in my bike club)
who have had skin cancer. Me, when I was a kid we'd take the subway to
Orchard Beach every day all summer long. Stay in the water until your
lips turned blue, then you got on a blanket and read until burned. Burn
and peel: an endless cycle, and a great way to set yourself up for
something nasty when you're older. Well, I'm older now and although I
haven't had anything exactly "nasty," dermatologists tell me I have
ample evidence of damage. Since I ride virtually every day, I wear
sunscreen when I go riding. YMMV

For me, prep means changing into a jersey, putting on socks and
cycling shoes (I don't wear outdoor shoes indoors, so I'd have to put

And you ride from home, as opposed to a 30 to 60 minute drive in the car
to get to the ride start. That makes a big difference.

If you're going to spend 30 minutes prep time plus an hour drive, I
think that ride had better run at least 90 minutes, absolute minimum.

2015-07-04 Thread Patrick Moore
The remarks on this thread about the Ram being slightly quicker in handling
-- I take it that this means that the Ram is slightly quicker to turn into
a corner -- are very interesting. I found the handling on my 58 cm Ram
quite nice, but a wee bit slower in the turn than I cared for, one reason I
sold it. The Ram was impeccably stable: think, coasting down a hill at 35+,
and sitting up, taking your left hand off the bar, and looking over your
left shoulder. Rock solid. But it felt to me a wee bit slow in the turn.
(FWIW, my Ram was shod with 29 mm Parigi Roubaix.)

I've heard others say that the Roadeo is slightly quicker than the Ram; I'd
love to try a Roadeo.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Bleriot: your take on it.

2015-07-04 Thread dailyrandonneur
I've got both, a 59 Bleriot and a 58 Rambouillet. Both have Noodle bars and
B-17 Brooks saddles.

The Bleriot with GB Cypres 32mm tires feels a tad flexier, but has more
stable handling. When it arrived as a frameset I was impressed with how
light it felt.

I had S&S couplers installed and rode this bike for a full brevet series
and PBP in 2007. It was terrific.

The Rambouillet with 28mm Michelin tires feels stiffer, a bit more
substantial, with somewhat quicker steering. I also rode brevets on this
bike, and completed BMB in 2004 on it.

They are kind of different. Both are fun to ride, but the Bleriot tends
toward comfort (the bigger tires make a difference) and I'd choose it for
really long days in the saddle on less than perfect roads. It was the more
pleasurable brevet bike, if not the fastest feeling.

The Rambouillet feels more like a road/sport bike, does great under hard
efforts, with fine handling manners. My similar size '95 Ritchey Logic
Road, also made by Toyo, is stiffer and has more of a snappy racing feel.

[RBW] Eroica California: Might There Be a Riv Contingent?

2015-07-04 Thread Evan E.
Anyone thinking of going to Eroica California? Paso Robles, April 8-10,
2016. As far as I can tell, lugged Rivendells (as "keeper of the flame"
bikes) qualify if they use non-aero brake levers and downtube shifters or
bar-end shifters. And of course vintage bikes are welcome.

Re: [RBW] Wee Rides are Awesome Rides!

2015-07-04 Thread Liesl
A wee ride is, well goodness, it could be 6 blocks each way to the grocery
store. Anything counts! Anything is good! Most of my riding is in increments of
2-10 miles commuting and running errands. I don't get kitted up; what I'm
wearing just about always works. Just pump the tires if I haven't done it in a
several days, make sure I have a lock, and whatever bag/basket combo the day
calls for! I have 2 big dogs, one of whom is a solid energetic 18 month old
plus my work days can be long--so I grab riding whenever I can. Wee rides thus
become really important.

Okay, winter is a little different ...

[RBW] Re: Eroica California: Might There Be a Riv Contingent?

2015-07-04 Thread Peter Adler
The route's been posted; it's on public roads, mostly. You can ride it any
other time you want. You just can't ride it as a semi-supported ride on
that day, with that particular crowd. And anyway: If you don't want to
participate in the spirit of the event, but just ride with a bunch of
strangers on whatever bike you feel like riding, there are hundreds of
events to accommodate you. Why would you want to whiz all over this one?

Evan: Pre-1980 all-friction barcons are acceptable (Campagnolo, Suntour
retrofriction, Simplex); indexed barcons switched to friction position are
not, because they can't be sure you won't get out of eyesight and switch
back to indexing. As I read it, Silvers pass; the very popular Dura Ace
9-speeds switched to friction do not.

In my last panicky attempts to get a workable Eroica bike ready (Plan
A/late 50s Follis Tour de France failed for smallness and my lack of
comprehension of pushrod rear derailleurs; Plan B/late 50s Frejus Tour de
France fell through because the bike kitchen sold the frameset to a hipster
before I got the cash together. I ran into that guy at the farmer's market
last week), I was about to try my most Riv-ish bike. My 1971 Raleigh
International, rigged out as a loaded tourer (TA 50.4 triple, Huret Duopar,
Mafacs, Bruce Gordon F+R racks, SP dyne front). But I thought about all the
fiddling of having to replace the 7-sp Suntour Accu-Shift barcons with
retrofrictions, and having to strip off the racks, and I gave up.

My understanding from the Eroica CA director (Wesley Hatakeyama, a regular
poster on CR) is that the equipment was not aggressively policed this year.
I've certainly seen a photo of a guy in full Bianchi lycra on an all-carbon
Bianchi with aero brifters *and a race number*, who apparently had no worry
about being pulled off the course in the middle of nowhere. That may change
as the headcount goes up; apparently, there's a vehicle inspection at the
event in Tuscany.

>From the reports I read (including one from the course director), there was
a rider on an AHH who rode the long (125 mile) course and got hit by a
reckless teenaged driver climbing back up the Cambria hills. Apparently,
first aid got him patched up well enough that he remounted and finished the
course.

[RBW] Re: I was turning left this morning

2015-07-04 Thread Lungimsam
Lately I've had trouble from other cyclists!
Several times cyclists have been riding the wrong way, towards me on the
shoulder, which sometimes forced me into the lane to go around them.
This week as I was driving, two cyclists came riding abreast down a ramp head
on towards me, forcing me to stop my car suddenly in my lane. Glad I didn't get
rear ended or hit them.

I don't know what to say to them. Maybe "Wrong side of the road. Your gonna get
hit.", or something? Not much of a window to talk as they pass me.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS 54 Saluki

2015-07-04 Thread jeffrey kane
I've owned this one since January 2011 ... am the second owner. It's the
caliper/CP type and is figured to be of the first or second run. The
original owner described the color as "Caramel" and offered this for
explanation:

*This frames set has a little history--it is the very first caramel
Saluki--it's from the first or second batch of frames. They were offered
in Pewter or green or custom for an upcharge. I emailed and talked with
Grant about wanting something sort of like the Harvest Gold that he uses on
customs, but darker and richer. He came up with the color for me and
declared it his favorite bike color ever and make it the stock paint for
subsequent Saluki frames. It also has the upgraded cast police badge-style
 head badge.*

Whatever the color, it's a beauty. I am always taken aback at how amazing
this bike feels when I get on it after riding my others for a while. I've
since drunk the BQ cool-aid and have diversified my 650b all road holdings
--- but this Saluki remains a favorite ... and is unlikely to ever leave
my stable.
