[RBW] Re: A flat? Really?

2015-06-23 Thread Ron Mc
a few weeks ago after a ride along a major loop access road (and hearing
the horrible pop sound of tires on sharp jetsam) - inspecting my rear tire
after the ride found 5 cuts, and one of them was severe. Nothing was near
the surface so I dabbed each cut with zap-a-gap and deflated the tire until
it cured. 150 miles later developed a slow leak which flatted on me after
a couple of days at rest. When I pulled the tire, found two pieces of
glass that had worked their way through the two Challenge PPS belts to
puncture the tube. Running a Strada Bianca in the rear and the last Eroica
on the planet on front. An acceptable outcome for the price of a cushy
ride.

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Taillights

2015-06-23 Thread John
In traffic, when it's dark, without reflective clothing, blinkies separate
one out from the cars which have steady rear lights.

The biggest problem I see on the road, whether driving, riding or walking,
is not drunks, it's distracted drivers on their cell phones.

Teens to octogenarians too busy talking or texting to notice stopped cars,
people in crosswalks, or cyclists.

I'm sticking with my rechargeable blinkies, Toplight, and reflective
triangle, and Monkey Lectric Monkeylights.

Annoying is better than dead.

I know many claim this but have never seen conclusive support that using
blinkies saves life or limb.

Personally I use a steady tail light where a Nathan
 vest over my shirt
and reflective ankle band with long pants. My riding knickers all have
reflective back pockets. Also much more conservative with my riding
choices after dark.

Maybe the homeless man would have been clueless, but the thief would have
noticed. Especially if the bike was secured with a compact u-lock.

Once you have a significant tube u-locked to a bike rack, the frame is

My U lock is 1.6 pounds. The pits weigh less than regular skewers. It
works.

I would rather not separate myself from cars, definitely want other cars to
treat me biking as another car in the road. Another reason why I tend to
take the whole lane, otherwise cars will not pass me with the designated 3

I agree, no light will probably save me from a driver too busy texting to
looking up.

Another unsafe annoyance are super bright headlamps from fellow commuters.
Also blinking front lamps not aimed low to the ground. : (

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Taillights

2015-06-23 Thread Patrick Moore
I have to agree with John; I'd rather be seen as different and even
annoying if both or either mean that I'm more noticeable. I recall how,
over 10 years ago when I used an early NR arc light system (POS, apart from
raw light output), often oncoming cars often would, at least on more minor
roads, noticeably pull toward the far left curb as I approached. The sort
of light that induces this reaction might well be judged obnoxious, but
until cyclists are seen much more widely as ordinary -- ordinary and every
day, as well as lawful -- users of the public roadways, I'd rather be
obnoxious than be hit.

All that said, from subsequent experience, I guess that an Edeluxe and
reflective Sam Browne give me as much visibility to oncoming nighttime
traffic. IMO and IME, decent reflective clothing and gear is almost as
important as decent lighting for safe urban night riding.

This said as someone who used to return home 15 miles directly across town
at evening rush hour on one of the city's busiest east/west boulevards,
Central Ave/Route 66. (I later decided that more backstreet routes were
preferable, but I used 66 for several years.)

As for tail lights, from my own experience as a driver, all the steady bike
taillights I've observed, and even very many blinkies, simply get
overwhelmed in the clutter of street lights, lit advertising, and
especially ever brighter auto tail lights, not to mention the glare of
oncoming headlights, in nighttime urban environments. Thus, even as a
cyclist, I'd rather put up with bright blinkies and even overbright
oncoming bicycle headlights than see cyclists, others as well as myself,
swallowed up at night in the surrounding light pollution.

Of course, common sense would mean that a cyclist would moderate his lumens
if riding with a group or for that matter if riding along a no-auto-traffic
cycling path remote from auto traffic.

Has anyone done rigorous studies on bicycle lighting in night time, rush
hour, urban conditions, to see what sort of lights and reflectors are
safest for cyclists? I suspect not, but I wish someone would. Until then, I
have to assume that blatant means safer in congested, nighttime, urban
traffic environments.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Taillights

2015-06-23 Thread Patrick Moore
One more note: recently, driving my daughter back westward from some
appointment along a very busy evening rush hour artery -- 6-lane Montano
just east of the River, before it narrows to 2 lanes -- I saw an eastbound
cyclist in the bike path to the right of 3 eastbound lanes with a powerful
front white blinkie. He was immediately noticeable, and this was still
broad daylight. I've seen many others in similar circumstances, unlit, and
even in broad daylight they much more disappear into the traffic clutter. I
wonder if my Edeluxe I would be as noticeable as he was in the
circumstances.

I'd welcome video of cyclists with different types of front and rear lights
-- blinky and steady, dynamo and battery, hi-po or more obtrusive -- in
broad daylight conditions. I wonder how much brightness you need to stand
out like the cyclist I described just now.

I do recall how, riding in mid-day, cloudless, mile-high (= makes LA look
gloomy) ABQ sunshine, a Supernova headlight vintage circa 2010 that I
encountered on an oncoming bike was very visible on a deserted bike path
from 3/8 mile away.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Taillights

2015-06-23 Thread Tim Gavin
Yes, 3M reflective tape is great. I put some on my girlfriend's Soma for
visibility. I used small strips (like 1/4" wide) on the inside of the
rims, and on the pedals. Those little reflective flashes are quite
visible, combined with the movement of the wheels and pedals. A bigger
patch on the rear of the fender is also quite conspicuous.

Basic spoke and pedal reflectors are also quite effective, due to their
signature motion.

As for lights, I now have dynamo setups on my two main bikes, with very
bright Luxos U headlights and Top Line Brake Plus rear lights.

I can't tell you which is more conspicuous, solid or blinking rear lights.
So I go with both; I sometimes add a red blinky light for added
conspicuity.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Taillights

2015-06-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Can enough square inches of reflective tape equal the visibility of a
cycling vest or Sam Browne? How much, and where? The Sam Browne is rather
annoying to put on, tho' in the universal scheme of things this is a gripe
petty to the point of absurdity.

I use reflective tape on cranks, but where can you add sufficient sq inches
if you don't use a helmet and don't want the stuff on your fenders? I don't
suppose you can

To make the question more general: what lighting and reflectors, front and
rear, in y'all's opinion, is minimally sufficient to make sure you stand
out *well, from front and from rear,* in a light-cluttered urban nighttime
rush hour environment?

What I've been using:

Sufficiently bright headlight (currently Edeluxe I or Mi-Newt Mini on
Medium: 200 lumens); PB Superflash or similar on blink + a steady light*;
Sam Browne or large waist-strapped triangle; 1" circles of brightly
reflective tape on upper butt-ends of cranks (would probably be better to
put tape at ends of cranks but the other place looks kinda neat).

* FWIW: on the 2 bikes that don't have the dynamo system, one "steady"
possibility is a 2 AA Maglite with red LED strapped to bottom of left
chainstay with lockblock.

[RBW] Rock N Roads w/ Fenders on 51cm Sam Hillborne?

2015-06-23 Thread Philip Kim
Getting the fit dialed in for my new Hillborne. It's a 51cm and has the
650b wheels. I have SKS P50 fenders installed, but I haven't cut the fender
stays yet.

I'm wondering if anyone has fit in Rock N Roads with fenders? I saw the
black and cream HIllborne on the Riv blug, but I think those were
700wheels. Not sure if it would be different with the 650b model or if I'd
have to get creative.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: The 5 minute bike...the worst of marketing

2015-06-23 Thread Eric Norris
Very interesting discussion of this topic over at Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_consensus

It includes these statements:

'The inherent uncertainty in science, where theories are never proven but can
only be disproven (see falsifiability
), poses a problem for
politicians, policymakers, lawyers, and business professionals.'

'Seen in this way, the demand that policy rely only on what is proven to be
"scientific truth" would be a prescription for policy paralysis ...'

Not sure what the good Deacon is referring to, but it seems that it is accepted
that “absolute truth” is in many cases not possible to determine, and the
consensus of science is relied up (for instance, related to evolution climate
change, etc.). It also seems that scientists are pretty clear on the difference
between “truth” and “consensus."

Read that blug post carefully. They cut the fender and attached part of it
behind the brake and the front part was attached to the bottom of the front
rack with two spacers. Very inventive solution but a little more involved

Re: [RBW] Re: The 5 minute bike...the worst of marketing

2015-06-23 Thread Deacon Patrick
You are right, Eric. But the theory of evolution is not on the same footing
as climate change (to use your examples). There is a scale, with generally
accepted theories at one side (which have time, quality and quantity of
studies and evidence backing them up) and theories that are largely based
on presupposition (opinion) at the other end. Evolution has a lot of
science supporting it and little to no science against it. Without a time
machine we can not absolutely confirm it, but it is reasonable to presume
that we have a fairly good understanding of how species developed over the
last millions of years. However, climate change has a LOT of disparity in
the science, with a whole lot of "known unknowns" in the research creating
a whole lot of presumptions that get mistaken as fact but upon which
conclusions get made. Policies based on that "consensus" are very much
skewing the tipping point of credible theory quite a bit toward the opinion
side of the scale, away from the "accepted theory."

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] The 5 minute bike...the worst of marketing

2015-06-23 Thread Eric Norris
Climate change is certainly an interesting topic … and one which I am not at
all an expert on. The point of the Wikipedia article is that science often
(usually?) doesn’t arrive at “truth.”

As far as evolution is concerned, you can find a lot of people out there who
would disagree that there is “little to no science against it.” Check out this:

http://scienceagainstevolution.info/index.shtml

And this:

http://www.icr.org/home/resources/resources_tracts_scientificcaseagainstevolution/

And this:

http://www.changinglives.org.au/evolution.html

When you look closely enough, there’s “disparity in the science” everywhere,
which takes one back to … consensus. But not to “truth."

2015-06-23 Thread Will
That's interesting. For $12.5K I can have 1 Venge or 3 Rivs.

My Rivs would be:

1) Atlantis with everything: racks, bags, fenders, dynamo, lights
2) Atlantis bare to the bone, nothing but fat tires
3) Hilsen or Legolas (gotta spend that last $4K)

Or I could have a Venge.

Re: [RBW] Re: The 5 minute bike...the worst of marketing

2015-06-23 Thread Jim Bronson
Hey, good one. For my 12.5K, I would get these three Rivs:

A custom Riv but with the build of an Atlantis, since the stock Atlantis
does not come in my size and I see that the used 68s are hard to come by,
for my upcoming world tour.

An AHH in 71 just because I can (make it work with a short-ish stem.) for
mixed terrain riding

An extra large Clem Jr (If they build it) for riding to work

Since I economized on the Clem, I would also get a custom tigged Boulder
for rando rides.

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Taillights

2015-06-23 Thread John
If the roads are relatively empty, pedal and ankle reflectors will make the
cyclist visible in headlights for a long ways.

But what about when the cyclist is approaching from either side at an
angle? Or riding in busy traffic?

Often, when I see a cyclist ahead of me riding in the right hand side of
the right hand lane, they are only visible from the butt up.

Headlights, rear lights and reflectors mounted below the saddle are hidden
behind the cars in front of me.

So only the lights or reflective clothing worn from the butt up increase
the cyclists' visibility as I approach the cyclists from the rear.

Steady rear lights on racks or saddles can be confused for the tail light
of one of the cars ahead of me, as perceiving the distance of one
particular red light in traffic can be confusing.

I'd rather see a blinky up ahead of me to tell me there is someone
somewhere up ahead riding on two wheels.

But if car drivers are texting, they can probably tune out the most
obnoxious bike lights if they can miss seeing my Honda CRV.

John

IIRC, a few years ago the people at Rivendell sent an e-mail with a link to
a database where we could enter all pertinent info about bikes we bought
from them, including date purchased, dealer name, model, etc., AND serial
number. I'm not sure what ever happened to all that info, but if we filled
it out, and our bike was stolen, couldn't we call or e-mail them to get the
serial number?

component choice for months, posting here multiple times, and calling

from the employees there to make an educated decision, only to wonder 'what

[RBW] BUMP: FS: Not 6 but 7 summer jerseys, 6 en plastique & 1 cotton, $45 shipped Priority CONUS.

$45 shipped CONUS.

Add #7: Nice, heavyweight cotton knit jersey, olive green, 3 back pockets
with one zipped, 21" X 26"; no add'l charge.

NOTE WELL! The dye is a wee bit faded in parts, so the overall impression
is a bit mottled. Still, of all the 6 jerseys, it was my favorite.

This is a true jersey cut with zip plaquet and 3 rear pockets, cut
slimmish. "Large Hardware" logo screened in white on right sleeve.

2. It has been *hot!* Just rode, 93*F, a drop of at least 10* since our
afternoon high. Main point: Wore lightweight Rivendell Wooly Warm jersey,
the ones with 3 button plaquet and button rear pockets (thanks again, Tom).
It feels a bit scratchier than my smoothest merino, but it was quite
comfortable both during the ride and afterward (garage 91*F). I think I've
discovered something that others knew long ago.

so fun at times. The things after this are going to "hurt" a bit more. My
Kurt Kinetic Road Machine indoor trainer is on the chopping block.

I think it is cool in its own way. It is kind of like a race car. Would I
ever buy one? NO, but I would take one out for a spin if I could.

That's a good way of looking at it. A Formula One carbon fiber race car would
be hilarious fun to do a couple runs in, but you wouldn't want to drag it to
the local market for milk and eggs even if you could afford to.

Matthew,

Please keep us posted as you continue to use this device. It sounds like a
great alternative and I'm interested in hearing more real use experiences.

Ahh! Frankly I thought there was a 1:1 correlation of disbelief in evolution
and disbelief in climate change.
I do like that bike, though. I'm as likely to fly a TIE fighter as ever ride
one, but I like it for the same reasons.

In my opinion, blinkies are what safety obsessed newbies or just folks too
selfish to care about group biking etiquette use. Sometimes when we grow up,
the blinky goes off. 😘

Seriously, folks - if you have to wear the reflective gear of a DOT flagger,
AND have several blinkies to feel safe, do it. I will either pass your annoying
beacon or find an alternate route.
