Can enough square inches of reflective tape equal the visibility of a cycling vest or Sam Browne? How much, and where? The Sam Browne is rather annoying to put on, tho' in the universal scheme of things this is a gripe petty to the point of absurdity.
I use reflective tape on cranks, but where can you add sufficient sq inches if you don't use a helmet and don't want the stuff on your fenders? I don't suppose you can .... To make the question more general: what lighting and reflectors, front and rear, in y'all's opinion, is minimally sufficient to make sure you stand out *well, from front and from rear,* in a light-cluttered urban nighttime rush hour environment? What I've been using: Sufficiently bright headlight (currently Edeluxe I or Mi-Newt Mini on Medium: 200 lumens); PB Superflash or similar on blink + a steady light*; Sam Browne or large waist-strapped triangle; 1" circles of brightly reflective tape on upper butt-ends of cranks (would probably be better to put tape at ends of cranks but the other place looks kinda neat). * FWIW: on the 2 bikes that don't have the dynamo system, one "steady" possibility is a 2 AA Maglite with red LED strapped to bottom of left chainstay with lockblock.
