Re: [RBW] Re: Need advice fitting/finding a shorter seat post for a 47cm Betty Foy

2015-05-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I've cut many seatposts and at least one stem quill and had absolutely no
problems with anything so modified.

Speaking of seatposts: weren't the old ones -- Records, those other early
road ones on every less expensive bike whose brand I now forget, but they
were ubiquitous -- Laprade! -- 180 mm from bottom of post to bottom of
clamp?

The seat tube on my Fargo is 43 cm; on a level-tubed road bike my ideal
would be a 60 c-c (with a 56-57 tt). It has a 40 cm seatpost, of which 21
cm or so is showing between top of clamp and bottom of cradle. I keep
meaning to cut off 10 cm or so, but keep forgetting. Bet I could save a lot
of weight and go a lot faster if I did this. Taking hacksaws to bike parts
is fun!

[RBW] OT: Loosening crank arm-thoughts on cause/solution?

2015-05-07 Thread Howard H
Erl, this sounds exactly like what I experienced with my Ram last year. I took
it to my LBS and they confirmed that the inner surface of the arm had worn and
would never seat properly. They ordered a new Sugino left crank arm and
installed it. I think the arm itself was surprisingly inexpensive, around 20
bucks IIRC.

[RBW] Re: OT: Loosening crank arm-thoughts on cause/solution?

2015-05-07 Thread Michael Hechmer
I can confirm the unanimous opinion that the crank arm is toast. And, BTW,
the best strategy when you find you have a loose arm, and no tool, is to
stop pedaling. Call for help. There is a little chance of saving the
crank but every additional stroke reduces the chance.

Also, I now use a good long torque wrench to tighten crank bolts. My only
experience of destroying a crank arm has begun with undertightened bolts
and gone downhill from there.

[RBW] The latest status of my Clemish build

2015-05-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
My 1987 Schwinn Paramountain is becoming even more Clemish. Around the
time the Clem pre-order happened, I had just finished stripping my frameset
down for some body modification. I was already emotionally invested in the
Paramountain, since I just recently got a custom frame bag for it. So,
even though the Clem is plug and play and a better deal, I'm sticking with
my franken-Clem.

Ed Litton put several braze ons...um...on for me. The fork needed fender
tips, mid fork braze ons and a fender eyelet hidden inside the fork crown.
In back I needed rack braze ons on the seatstays and I had fender eyelets
put in both bridges. Now the Paramountain has a Nitto Mt Campee F20 front
rack, and Velo Orange stainless steel fenders. I uploaded 6 photos this
morning, which can be scrolled here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/72157641291971794/

The latest ones are at the bottom. Enjoy.

Mechanics note. The bike has suntour Roller cams, which are great brakes.
When they QR open, though, they hit the fender, and put me in the annoying
situation of having to deflate my front tire to get the wheel out. So,
last night I profiled the brakes to fit the curve of the fender much
better. Now they open wide enough for 42mm real width tires with some
margin. I might go at them again when the new Rat Trap Pass tires come
out.

2015-05-07 Thread Montclair BobbyB
A sad (and perhaps grateful) day for cyclists. I didn't learn of Jobst's
passing until today. And ironically just last evening I built up a
beautiful set of wheels for a good friend in record time (with seemingly
minimal effort). I thought to myself, wow... I had a good teacher (in
Sheldon Brown and most of all, Jobst Brandt) who have inspired so many
fools like me to dare to become halfway proficient at wheel-building.
Today I raise my coffee cup (and red Spokey) to Jobst Brandt and Sheldon
Brown.

Awesome pic of the threesome!

Helmet light. I use a rechargeable Dinnote. It is wonderful. Three levels
of lighting, small and light. You can attach the battery to the helmut or
it comes with a longer cord to tuck the battery in a pocket. Of course,

[RBW] Re: Where do you mount your lights?

2015-05-07 Thread Jeremy Till
I haven't done a lot of night time trail riding on my dyno setup but my
commute used to involve a fairly twisty multi-use paved trail where I would
run into the same issue. I picked up one of those Princeton Tec EOS helmet
lights like Riv used to sell, and it's great, totally took care the looking
into turns issue. The newest ones use the current super-bright led's and
run on three AAA batteries, so you can either use rechargeables or pick up
spares in any gas station or convenience store. I was amazed at how bright
it is, I could easily ride with only it as a headlight. It also has three
brightness settings so you can run it on low beam when it's supplementing
another light and get really good battery life out of it.

[RBW] FS: 650b Panaracer Pasela PT - PAIR - $55 plus shipping.

2015-05-07 Thread David Banzer
Short story: PAIR of Panaracer Pasela PT 650b x 42mm Tires, Tanwall for
sale: $55 plus shipping, contact off list, Paypal Personal please.

Long story: I ordered said tires for a Shogun conversion as there was lots
of clearance for 650b tires. It was a very large frame, and with 38mm 650b
tires, I was pushing standover clearance. After I ordered the tires, I
resolved that the frame indeed was too big and sold it to another list
member. Tires arrived and I installed them on a Univega conversion I've
been working on. There was about 1mm of clearance on either side of the
chainstays, so too tight for 42mm tires. I'll need to go back to 38mm,
which is fine. So, now I have a pair of tires with no frame for them. I
installed them and rode them about 10 miles.

Thanks,
David

Re: [RBW] The latest status of my Clemish build

2015-05-07 Thread Tim Gavin
Very nice, Bill. I had my '88 KOM frame blasted this winter, and my friend
Andy brazed on some fork end, seat stay, and dropout eyelets (my frame had
zero). I left the frame bare and had a clear coat painted on. It looks
great; consider the bare/clear.

Mine has cantis in front and U brakes in back, so no fender interference
with 2.1". While 2.35" Super Motos are fantastic tires, they leave no
clearance for a fender. I tried a P65 (very non-intrusive design) the
other day and it's just too tight. And the U-brakes in back may not fit a
Super Moto. I have to get another in hand to test fit (they're back in
stock next week!)

The Paramountain/KOM-10 is a great lugged, MUSA frame. The later PDG
series (some TIG, some lugged) are also nice; I definitely keep my eye
out. I'd love to score a cheap "blue velvet gas" (aka purple/fuschia)
lugged '92 Series 90.

Thank you everyone for piping up and letting me know I'm not riding off a
cliff.

And thanks Joe for the offer of the stem, but having measured the whole
bike/saddle/seat post set up at least 10 times, I'm going to go head and
trim an inch off the end.

Boy, helping someone diagnose why they're not quite happy with their saddle
set up isn't too easy.

Thanks again!

Tom asked

"You going to repaint the new braze-on areas, or are you going for the
“It’s a utilitarian bike – you gotta problem with that?” kind of approach?"

Litton advised me to do the build before getting paint/powder, just in case
there were any other issues. I'm now thinking that I'll do a simple R14 in
back, and I'm debating whether to leave the frame as it is or do a set of
mid-stay braze ons in addition. I'll (hopefully) use it for a few
overnighters this summer and then get it powdercoated. I'm debating
whether to powdercoat the fenders at the same time.

Thanks for asking, Hugh.

I'm off the bike for the foreseeable future, I'm afraid. The knee has
deteriorated to the point where riding more than 30 minutes is difficult,
and hills are right out. I still take it out for short joy rides now and

I'm still waiting for a surgery date, after which I'll be barred from
riding on the street for at least 6 months. I'm understandably bummed.

[RBW] Dyno hub/light vibrations through handlebars question...

I have a SON Deluxe wide body hub with an upside down Edelux II light.

The light is great, but I feel some vibration in the handlebars when the

1. Is this normal for this kind of hub?
2. Is there any way to get rid of the vibrations?

Light is mounted to my front rack eyelet.

[RBW] Re: Dyno hub/light vibrations through handlebars question...

2015-05-07 Thread William deRosset
1. It is normal
2. There isn't an easy way to get rid of the vibrations.
3. Not that you asked, but some SON hubs are buzzier than others. I've had
one that was borderline unpleasant, and I have one that is a real challenge
to notice a difference between "off" and "on" on average pavement without
visual cues from the lights. Most are somewhere in-between, and they tend
to have a favorite resonant frequency somewhere around 17-20mph. I prefer
them with higher resonant speeds and less vibes, as I average 15mph or so
on overnight rides..

[RBW] Pushing the boundaries till they push back

2015-05-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
Pushing the boundaries till they push back — it’s really the only way to really
know what we’re capable of. I just wish my boundaries were further out there!
Sardonic grin.

The plan: a two night, 160 mile loop to Deckers, Buffalo Creek, Lost Creek,
Lake George, Divide, and home.

The reality: The same bloomin’ creosote poles that blew up my brain on Goose
Creek Road a month ago haven’t aired out enough and blew up my brain again.
That road is off my list for this year. I’m slow, but I try not to make the
same mistake three times. Grin.

Got to dance with thunderstorms in stunning canyons following amazing rivers,
climb some challenging hills, camp in a new to me area at the edge of National
Forest at Lake Wellington, slog and bog my way up Stoney Pass which is lovingly
being re-topped with as yet to be packed down new dirt, take in epic views of
Pikes Peak from afar and Lost Creek and the Haymen fire burn area from close
up, and then get my carcass hauled out from Deckers by my wonderful, far too
good to me wife.

Photos prove the world is an amazing, beautiful place to explore and play!

Re: [RBW] Re: Dyno hub/light vibrations through handlebars question...

2015-05-07 Thread Eric Norris
I get less vibration from my Shutter Precision hub than from my Schmidt hub
(the kind with the large alloy shell, not the newer, bulb-shaped type). Running
LED lights, which draw less current, also seems to reduce vibration (as well as
drag).

I’ve found that having the lights “on” when starting from a stop makes the
vibration less noticeable than if I turn the lights on while moving.

I sympathize with your missing the riding, especially just now as the
weather is so encouraging of being outside. Looking to the future, I've
had two friends that have had knee replacements. Both pursued the
post-surgical physical therapy as aggressively as possible and were
actually cleared to ride within 90 days, based on their rapid progress.
One even motivated himself by booking a big, hilly tour so he had to keep
on track to meet the tour date. Good luck & keep us posted.

If you wear butchering a 'Beam/'One to make it 650b would you replace canti
studs with Paul Racer brazeons or just lower the canti studs?

If you were doing that.

[RBW] Re: Thunder Burt Wisdom...

2015-05-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
Liesl, When I talked with the folks at Riv (I don't remember who), they
said Big Ben would not be as supple but would have more protection.

I have to say, given what I put the tires through on my abbreviated tour,
if you aren't flat prone, you would love these. I'm considering taking the
Hunqapillar rather than the Quickbeam up Pikes Peak (all paved, with a
loong curvy climb at the begening and a looong curvy fast descent
at the end). With me and full water, food, and gear, the bike weighed 280
pounds. I had a LOT of sandyish clayish mud to bog my way through and I
still felt like I was floating over it compared with the Smart Sams (though
my legs will tell you differently). The descents were equally challenging,
with that same mud strewn liberally with fist-sized and larger rocks there
was no way to miss. I was surprised by how well they handled all the varied
conditions and terrain and circumstances.

Yes, it's $90 a pop, but I'd say if you're asking the question, you'll like
the only answer that matters and that's the ride. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: Thunder Burt Wisdom...

2015-05-07 Thread Hugh Smitham
Liesl,

I just received by TB's and promptly mounted them on my '03 Atlantis
running 26" wheels and took it for a spin today. My initial reaction is
damn wow! I road mixed terrain, mostly sandy loose trail with some fist
sized rocks. Right off the bat I was amazed how fast they rolled over
asphalt and how sure footed they felt in the loose trail, especially
compared to the Big Ben's I've been running.

Clearance:

I have 60 mm SKS fenders and the TB's have gobs more room, probably because
they measure 47.5mm on my DT Swiss 23mm OD MTB rims, versus the Big Ben's
which on the same rims measures approximately 53.5mm.

Supple:

I know this seems a stretch but they have that Grand Bois Hetre suppleness
which at least for me translates into a cush ride. I ran them at 40 psi and
they rolled really quick, sort of feel like I could run em at 35 psi and be
fine.

Price:

I purchased them from
http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/schwalbe-thunder-burt-evo-snakeskin-pacestar-26x2.10-tl-easy-folding-405726
for two I paid IIRC $85.76 approximately that included shipping. They
arrived really quickly considering they came from Germany and had to go
through customs.

Keep in mind I can't speak to durability since I just started riding them,
pretty sure the Big Ben's will last a really long time. I however am
willing to sacrifice that for a supple, fast, weight saving tire that
increases my riding pleasure, along with the potential for increased flats.
Hey out West here the dreaded "Goat Head" don't discriminate. They went
easily through my brand new Big Ben's.

I think with the cost it's an easy decision.

Happy riding,

~Hugh
