[RBW] Country Bike Rally in Michigan 2015

2014-12-04 Thread Marc Irwin
Along my travels the past few years a few people have asked about a bike
rally in Michigan. Of course there are a lot of places many people would
like along the lakeshore, but I realized that two things which have reached
international importance are right out my back door and I do it every year.
Every year around the end of Sept I ride up to Yankee Springs Campground
and spend the weekend where I ride through the forest along the route of the
Barry Roubaix gravel race and spend the
following day riding (or driving/riding, depending on the weather) to Grand
Rapids for the Art Prize competition
.
I thought I would throw that out there and invite anybody who wishes to tag
along. It would be the last weekend of September 2015.

Re: [RBW] Long Shot: WTB Noodle Cockpit

2014-12-04 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Mike,
The Mark's Bar is in KC. When I'm there it's usually for such a short time that
I prefer to ride rather than reconfigure. That being said, the Mark's is not a
bad bar at all, I just prefer the Noodle.

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-12-04 Thread Michael Hechmer
Ok, I'm rather late to this discussion but after 35 years of riding I have
set up and used a lot of brakes. The two worst brakes I have ever had were
shimano (550?) cantis and an early, mid 80's diacompe canti. Both hard to
set up and poor stopping with shimano levers. My favorite have been the
Paul's neo-retros. They have been on a number of my bikes. I have sold
the bikes but never the brakes. I have had a lot of other brakes I really
liked. Campy Grand Sport, which I have had for 25years and are still on my
winter bike. Chorus & Ultegra side pulls. Great power, good modulation,
easy set up, but all needing regular attention. I have the posted racers
on the tandem. and RacerM's on my Ram.

It's hard for me to compare the power of the Racers with the retros since
the loaded tandem weighs 400+ lbs. However they do a pretty good job both
in stopping the tandem and in modulation. My only complaint against them
has been the opening. They are specked for 55mm fenders and 38 mm inflated
tires, although I have managed to get the VO 60mm fenders under them. The
Racer Ms on the Ram are fabulous for a fendered bike with mid size tires on
them. When all is said and done, though the Neo-Retros overcome all of
these problems. I have swapped out the pads for shortys and so they open
up as wide as I need them. They never interfere with any fender. They are
incredibly powerful and when matched with tectro levers offer great
modulation. My only complaint against cantis is because they sit below the
fenders, they get very dirty.

When I bought my first set of Paul's I had a hard time setting them up.
Once I learned how to work with these brakes I have found them the easiest
brakes I own to set up and they hold that set up wonderfully. If anyone
has a pair and is struggling with set up I would suggest studying their
instructions http://www.paulcomp.com/shared/instructions/neoretro.pdf )
carefully and be patient with yourself. After you have worked with them a
bit a light will go off and it will be very easy. If you have worked with
other "modern" Cantis or CPs, its like switching from Windows to OSX.
Confusion followed by, "Oh that's how you do it, simple."

Good brakes can be a lifetime investment. I like that Paul sells all the
wear parts individually and at reasonable prices. I expect these brakes to
outlive me by many, many years.

You aren't that wrong. Still pricey. But likely worth it on the right

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-12-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
Let your flag fly! It's always fun to think of reasons to put money in Mr
Price's register.

Compass brakes are *partially* made in the USA, but farther away from me
than Chico ;-) . Also, there is no frame in existence that takes both the
Compass brakes and Paul Racers* (they use different posts). So the only
people that really have a choice between those two products are people who
are about to specify a custom frame for 42mm tires and want braze-on
centerpull brakes. That's not a lot of people. For me, the integrated
rack (made by non-Americans at Nitto) is super attractive. The fact I can
buy some super swank hardware to bling out my Mafac Racers is kind of fun,
too.

Bill-who-loves-to-buy-American-Lindsay

*p.s. OK, I suppose that if you had a frame that you wanted to run
center-mount center-pull brakes, you would have the choice between
centermount Paul Racers as option A, and as option B you could buy Mafac
Raid yokes on Ebay, and buy Compass brakes and cobble together your own set
up. Option C would be to buy Mafac Raids on Ebay and upgrade the hardware
from Compass (or use them stock). Option D is Dia Compe 750s, also not
made in the USA.

Keep it on the calendar Tim. I put it up there so people could consider it
for their 2015 plans. I will no doubt be able to get some people locally
to come, but am hoping some from other areas will set the date aside.

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-12-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
Mafac Racers are smaller than Paul Racers and the Compass brakes. Without
question if you are running 700x32 or thereabouts with fenders, Mafac
Racers can be had very affordably and are really fun to profile and polish.
But for 650Bx42 + fenders, Mafac Racers are not an option, right? You
need Raids which are much rarer, or the very rare and weird Tiger.

I'll bet they weren't as bad as my all-time tied losers:

Avid BB7 *road bike design* disks; absolutely useless even with 180 front

Mafac Cantis, both single and tandem versions (salmons, of course and with
both OEM Mafac levers and modern Tektros. Professionals could not get these
to work.

Both kinds were good enough to ride the bikes with, but no pleasant.

I had never heard of the Mafac Tiger before your post but a Google search
lead to quite a number of links. Learn something new every day. Also, it
looks like it really should be MAFAC Tiger/Racer/etc as MAFAC stands

Who knew? Not me at any rate.

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-12-04 Thread Jan Heine
Paul Price (the "Paul" of Paul Component Engineering) and I have known each
other for a very long time. I remember how he called me up after I wrote an
article about centerpulls for the Riv. Reader, way back in the last century
(before Bicycle Quarterly), and asked about them. I sent him a set of old
Mafac Racers, and he liked them so much that he made his own Racers.

We talked back then about forging the arms, and he told me that in the
U.S., there simply isn't anybody making small aluminum forgings like that.
So you basically have a choice of CNC-machining in the U.S. or having them
forged where the technology exists. These days, even TA cranks are forged
in Taiwan. Forging requires a higher initial investment, but the part is
stronger and thus can be made lighter, and there isn't as much waste. (With
CNC-machining, you make a lot of chips as you chisel the part out of a
block of aluminum. With forging, you squish a piece of aluminum that is
roughly the right size into a die that gives the part the shape you want.)

To me, "made in the U.S." isn't that important, as long as it's made under
good working conditions. My friends live all over the world, and it doesn't
make sense to prefer my American friends over my Japanese, French or German
friends. We look at each supplier to make sure they are working in ways
that I can support, both with concern to labor and to the environment.

Beyond that, I do prefer short supply paths, for environmental and
logistical reasons. If possible, we'll make components close to Seattle,
like our laser-cut rack tabs, our frame alignment gauges, and some other
projects that are still in development. We buy American-made brake shoes,
and our tire wipers are made by a retired guy in the U.S. who is grateful
for the extra income. Our leather washers for fender mounting come from
California...

[RBW] Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-04 Thread lungimsam
I can do some stuff on my bikes. Setting up cockpits and saddle/seatpost,
brake lever/caliper/housing/cable installation and adjustment, pedals,
shifter lever installation and adjustment, fender/rack installations,
cassette/chain swapping, etc. The more basic stuff.

But I haven't dared to do anything with bb's, cranksets, wheel
building/truing, headset adjustment, derailer installation. Just don't
wanna mess anything up.
But I want to learn to do this stuff so I don't have to depend on the LBS
for things.

What's a good way to go about doing these more difficult things without
damaging anything? Books and websites are helpful, but I still don't have
the confidence to mess with the aforementioned stuff.

Buy a beater and wrench away on it? But a lot of old road bike beaters
don't match the type of components and frame of the RBW bikes and wheels,
so I don't know how helpful that would be to break down and rebuild a
Peugeot (for instance) to help me learn how to do maintenance on my
Rivbikes.

Any ideas? How'd you learn?

I don't know that I have anything pertinent to add to this thread, but I
will say, that after installing metal fenders on my sidepull brake road
bike, I am of the mind now to purchase any future bikes I get with canti
brakes on them. I just don't want any calipers limiting the height I can
raise the fender to the fork crown.

You can see how the calipers in the pic below limit that space:

[RBW] Re: About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-12-04 Thread lungimsam
...With a canti bike, it must be such a sweet feeling to just slide a front
rack strut bolt into your fork crown and then tighten, ever so gently,
along with the precisely fitting strut legs to your fork braze-ons,
installing the rack in just 5 minutes instead of an hour or more trying to
precisely bend a rack's rear strut tang over sidepull or centerpull caliper
arms...what a rewarding sigh that must be, afterwards, as you take in the
beauty of the newly installed front rack, with the smell of the fresh
beeswax or Loctite in the air that was heated, ever so delicately, by the
responsible torque-ing of the bolts...did I mention...done in just 5
minutes...the joyful anticipation of seeing how that front rack bag will
look nestled onto that bike jewelry you just installed...ok, I'm being
silly now...

Really, I can't complain. I love and appreciate my bike and brakes so much,
and it was a lot of fun to install the fenders and rack. I learned a lot
and love the set up. And the challenges made it very rewarding when it was
all done. But I remember thinking these type of things at the time I was
wrestling with all the parts to get them installed.

Re: [RBW] Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Jump in and just do it. I know what I know by making all the mistakes. My
first bike build, age 15, 1970, included at the very least 3 distinct and
incompatible basic component designs and I ended up with a bike that no rim
brake (caliper, stirrup) would fit and a 90" gear. And I accomplished this
build and the next (age 16) much more sophisticated (and more weird) one
using, not only the most basic of tools, but tools that weren't tools: nail
and hammer and large nut to break and assemble chains; one-prong paper
punch for pliers; pipe wrench for wheel nuts; and so forth.

Much more recently, circa 2012, I made -- in the sense of "coerced" -- a
Worksman tricycle frame to accept a Stronglight 99 (I think; 86 bcd) single
with the stock bb assembly (using an Ashtabula to square taper BMX
conversion) by hammering in a very delicately gauged dent in the right
stay. Worked just right and even looked elegant.

This by way of installing a chi chi Grafton triple, of which I was very
proud, on a mtb using the then standard XT type 122.5 mm spindle, and
earning the contempt of a local bike mechanic for the weirdly offset
chainline.

[RBW] Re: Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-04 Thread lungimsam
For any project, I like to read, look at vids, and then check the Sheldon
Brown page, as there are sometimes important things to know that are not
always mentioned in just one source, like knowing not to use your stem
bottomed out in the steerer tube 'cuz it can fail if your steerer is
butted. I think Sheldon's page was the only source I saw that mentioned
that.

RBW's bike assembly video does not, but should. Because Tallux's and
Technomics bottom out easily in steerer tubes if you like bars below saddle
height.

Dare. It’s a bike and thankfully the technology is not mysterious- you can
usually figure it out just by looking at it. The mot complicated thing on your
list is wheel building. Leave that be until you have some of the other things
under your belt.

I learned from garbage picking old bikes, tearing them apart, putting them back
together (often in mix ’n’ match style). And then I learned from Glenn’s
Complete Bicycle Manual. And then I got a job in a bike shop.

If you live in a metropolitan area, there may very well be some classes you can
take on bike maintenance. Our own Jim Thill has sponsored some of those
classes at his shop- this is a great way to learn this stuff because someone
who knows it is right there.

Kind of a funny thing. I used to overhaul my bikes every winter- true the
wheels, repack the various bearings, put on a new chain, clean everything up
nice and spiffy, regrease every thread, etc.- a pretty much complete teardown.
Now most of my bikes have sealed bearings in the hubs, BBs and headsets. I
rebuild the headset in my Riv (a Stronglight that came with the frame in 1996)
about every 5 years and even then, when I have it apart, it doesn’t need it.
Some bike stuff is just way better than it used to be, like bearings. The Riv
has Phil hubs, still rolling silky smooth on the original bearings. It’s got a
Campy Veloce sealed BB, still smooth after a decade of service. I spend about
two hours a year on bike maintenance for three bikes and most of that is wiping
off crud.

[RBW] Re: I rode the Clem Smith proto this morning

2014-12-04 Thread Surlyprof
To chime in some additional data, I'm 5'10.5" tall with an 85 PBH. I fit a
55cm Sam perfectly with the seat at 74cm from the center of the cranks.
Felt great during an extended test ride. I've also tried a 54cm
Hunqapillar that felt good and, to my surprise, a 58 Homer. All of them
felt good with what I would consider a road bike-like standover. I ride a
19" Soma Groove and, even though there is a decent amount of seatpost
showing, the standover is not much more than the Sam and Hunq. I assume
this is due to the higher bottom bracket. I also used to own a 2005
Bianchi Veloce that was a virtual 59. They called it that because it had a
sloping top tube like the Sam. It actually had better standover than the
Groove. If I was doing some crazy mountain riding, I might want a lower
standover but, at this point in life, I'm digging the older style mountain
bike fit. The handlebars on the Groove are at least 2" above the saddle
and the Sam I tried was about the same. I'm contemplating the 52 Clem but
I wasn't sure how the height would shift when going down to a 650b wheel.
I'll probably still go with the Sam when the finances allow. I think it
is a truly beautiful bike. I understand why Brooks likes to use it in
their trade shows and as one of their "Bikes of Distinction"

I ride in that area all the time. It is definitely worth the ride! Vernon
Blvd was repaved in the last few months and has a double semi-protected
bike lane. You can take it to the Polaski Bridge and over to connect to
Kent Ave. If you do ride it, I recommend checking out Socrates Sculpture
Park. Then, hang a left just north of that park, and ride through the
projects. It's a nice view of the lighthouse and UES. It winds around to
Astoria Park. If you ride all the way north of Astoria Park, you can ride
down 20th Ave, which also has a bike lane. Check out the Steinway Mansion
and Singlecut Microbrewery there! Also, in the area Skillman Avenue
through Sunnyside is lovely for bike riding. Email me off the list if
you'd like any other information or a guide!

Sounds great Mark. I am in the Muskegon area and would gladly participate. I
like the Barry Roubaix idea better. Artprize can get pretty crazy in car and on
foot even. Grand rapids isn't the most bike friendly in my experience 10 years
ago, may be much better now.

[RBW] FS: vintage french baggins-looking Sac La Fuma backpack / "porteur bag" / "shop sack"

2014-12-04 Thread Antonioni Vicente
1950's or 60's La Fuma hiking pack. The Baggins resemblance is lovely.

This thing rides perfectly on a porteur rack or will sit right down, shop
sack style, in the "huge" Wald basket on my Atlantis. Messenger bag-like
in the sense that it expands immensely, ideal for transporting large or
awkward objects. Yet, due to it's mostly canvas and leather construction,
will fold up nice and small if it's capacity isn't being pushed. Perfect
for rides to the laundromat or grocery, and ideal for train or airplane
travel. I've used it as-is, lashed to a rear rack on tours as a daypack
for off-bike excursions. I had envisioned possibly making some
modifications, removing the external frame (it's easy to remove and/or put
back in place) and make a saddlebag out of the thing but didn't have the
time (or heart).

I've included a few pictures of the bag in the Wald, and a few other
pictures of the side and front pockets filled with water bottles in order
to give an idea of it's size. You'll also see a tape measure in at least
one photo. (No images attached because the of size issues) I've only seen
others like it on sale via Etsy pages hailing from France, (and all over
$125 US) therefore I know not much more of this handsome bag.

$85 plus shipping. Let me know if you have any other questions.

[RBW] Re: Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass

2014-12-04 Thread Geoffrey
I have 2k on the pair of Stampede pass tires on my AHH with one flat, that
was part of a hawthorne after a really heavy wind storm. That's it.
Funny enough, I've flatted three times over 500 miles on the JB's on my
Bilenky. I think it's just luck of the draw.

Re: [RBW] Re: NYC ride report

2014-12-04 Thread Geoffrey
My brother who rides all through the winter in Western Mass loves the
Outdoor Research Mutant Mitts. They're big but for really cold weather,
they work well. They're kinda like lobster mitts but it's your thumb, your
fore finger (trigger finger with these gloves) and then the remaining
three. If your trigger finger gets cold you can tuck it in with the other
three. List is nearly 200 bucks but someone on ebay is selling surplus for
much less. I bought a pair in XXL but haven't used them for riding yet.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass

2014-12-04 Thread Thomas B
The Compass tires are great, no question in my mind. I've been commuting on
them since summer. However, when the wet weather came to the Bay Area I
started getting flats riding through pretty awful streets of Richmond and
put Pasela TG's back on.

Unfortunately, my Compass experience got me itching for something a bit
more lively than the TG's. The Soma New Xpres sound good - I was also
considering Vittoria Voyager Hyper after trawling old posts. Anyone care to
compare those apples?

bicycle enthusiasm.

I will be coming back to the list for build advice!
