2014-11-11 Thread Ron Mc
my tire wiper installation (supported almost equally with the opposite
installation in vintage photographs) even brought up an "incorrect"
response from Jan.
But, they eject everything except dust and water from my Honjos, including
Big rocks and Big sticks. I've done the math and the roadwork - there is
no way you're going to flip these around without grossly deforming the
fenders, because the fender clearances are tight enough, and anything that
would deform the fenders to that extent makes the flip factor moot. On the
contrary, they keep that big stuff out of the fenders, along with all the
small stuff.
They even scrape mud before it enters the fenders. Of course they only
work with slick tires. I wouldn't use these on the big clearances of my
daughter's SKS fenders, but they function perfectly like this on my
relatively low-clearance Honjos.

1-2cm clearance all around sounds like plenty of room. Are you using
new-ish tires? New tires seem a bit more tacky and can pick up pebbles and
small rocks. After using them for a while, the rocks-in-fenders have
diminished.

Couple hundred miles I would guess on these Hetres. I thought about that too.

Though I have the 1cm clearance fender to tire, the stay eyelet nuts are still
only 2-3 mm from tire. The lock washer and flat washer on them take up about a
mm of space I would guess.

Are they necessary since the nut has a rough surface to its integrated washer?

to show you how much ebay endorses fraud by their sellers, there is no
means to report this item. If you go down every option for reporting an

2014-11-11 Thread Anton Tutter
Agreed. I've gone so far as to complain to eBay about this. Also, there's
no way to block a seller's listings from appearing in search results.
pb*bikes would be the very first seller I would block, for their insulting
prices. When I do a search, I can't stand seeing the same sellers from
whom I would never buy anything. I've complained about this. There's got
to be a back end to activating this feature, and I'm willing to bet eBay
just doesn't enable it for the end user.

Re: [RBW] Re: Is the Bleriot/Honjos/ Hetres clearance I have not enough?

2014-11-11 Thread Eric Norris
FWIW, my Hetres seem very adept at picking stuff up. Monsieur Blériot’s rear
tire (worn enough to have lost most of the molded tread ribs) snagged both of
these items in the same ride on Sunday. The straight piece I’m holding in a
gloved hand went through the sidewall and caused a flat; the other was embedded
in the tire about 20 miles later but somehow didn’t damage the tube.

Jan Heine reports excellent flat resistance with Grand Bois tires; he should
come ride the mean streets of Sacramento County sometime.

heavy gauge wire is the second-worst hazard on the road - the only thing
worse is a y-shaped stick that will plant itself firm and impale your tire
as you roll over it.
Both of these are reasons to carry fold-up spares.

[RBW] Re: Compass Loup Loup 650b x 38 vertical height tire measurement needed, please.

2014-11-11 Thread lungimsam
Thanks Shoji. I appreciate it.

Another lister reported 35.5 mm.

My Hetres at 55psi are about 36mm tall from the rim. So the height is not much
different which surprises me. I would have thought the smaller tire would have
less height so maybe I need to use my Cyprii for max clearance.

I rechecked and looks like maybe 1cm tops under calipers. Hard to tell for sure
as too tight to see under there.
A few 2-5mm from stay eyelet bolts to tires, depends on which fender.
About 1.5 at fender ends from tire to inside of fender.

[RBW] Brisk November Ride

2014-11-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
We got an inch of snow last night and a brisk 4˚F at 7am, so I bundled up and
headed out, hopeful of making it to the top of Lovell Gulch or perhaps Rampart
Reservoir. Alas, the slick snowpack left me pondering my own mortality on the
hood of a diesel truck just learning how to drive in the snow (either being
from somewhere else or having forgotten in the last 6 months). So I wimped out
and turned around.

All clothing systems worked beautifully except for footwear. I have yet to sort
out what to wear that handles uber cold to wet and sloppy AND is minimalist.
But I am home now, and can feel my toes again. They are still pink and still
wiggle, so I wasn’t too stupid. Grin.

Photos show what felt like a quintessential November day in Colorado hills.

[RBW] Re: Brisk November Ride

2014-11-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, Jon. I wore boiled wool socks, and won't do synthetic. The issue
was the winds on the descent. 30+ mph. And my over shoes, which are thin
leather running minimalist shoes with holes for breathability. The answer
is mukluks, which I tried last year, but they rotted out within a month due
to the freeze/thaw cycle. I have a moccasins system that works, but not as
well as the mukluks, though the moccasins don't rot out. Lots more to tell
about what doesn't work and why. But still in search of mukluks that don't
rot out (they are designed to be highly breathable, but do not handle temps
above 20˚F well, and are ideal for 0 or less.

the formula is simple - he buys parts in auction on ebay and re-sells them
in a BIN store at double his purchase price (or more). In many cases, he
is simply fishing for idiots, sometimes people who don't know better, other
times, impatient people who won't wait for a better deal.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil final build--for now.

2014-11-11 Thread hsmitham
Trevor,

This past Summer I recall seeing your frame hanging way in the back at Riv
HQ, a Riv employee took me back to show me your frame exclaiming how
unusual and awesome the mat finish was. Seeing it built is awesome! I tried
the "M" bars and didn't like them at all. I just installed Albatross bars
on my Atlantis and what a difference it makes! Completely different bike in
all the good ways. Enjoy hat ride.

Patrick, FWIW I have an Albastache bar looking for a new home. PM me if
your interested?

People, ebay is an online auction house. The rules of the Auction house are
they present the product, you decide how much you want to pay. Now blatant
mis-representation is illegal and immoral but listing something for double
what its worth isnt either of those things. Why is a Rothko worth $40
million? because thats what someone paid for it.

Re: [RBW] Re: HIgh hopes on ebay

2014-11-11 Thread Anton Tutter
Peter, you are correct, and I'm not aware that anyone is accusing him of
violating any rules or principles of honesty. But by setting prices to
obscenely high sums, and actually waiting for someone desperate enough to
pay them, he's effectively driving the entire market up.

I mentioned that I'd love to block him from my search results, and it's
because I'm not desperate enough to ever pay his prices and his listings
just end up being unwanted noise that I need to mentally filter out of my
search results since eBay won't let me filter them out informatically.

Re: [RBW] Re: HIgh hopes on ebay

2014-11-11 Thread Goshen Peter
Oh, i hear you. When see outrageous prices i know it is PB bikes or another
seller or two that deals in overpriced "vintage" items. I would think from
a business model Ebay would never let you filter out sellers, that would
hurt their commission on said sales and the bottom line, which is all that
really matters for ebay and thier quasi-legal offshore "bank" known as
paypal. I dont know for sure that these items drive everything up, I mean i
see his crap hang out for months on ebay so its not like people are just
falling over themselves to buy it. When i list stuff i list it at real
prices and it sells in a day or two, my time is worth more than hoping
someone comes along and pays an inflated price, but i am not running a
business. Yeah its scummy to take advantage of people who dont know any
better but its capitalism, for better or worse.

2014-11-11 Thread Anton Tutter
Thanks for reminding me about that list-- that's a great resource! But the
650B section could use some updating... none of the recent Compass
offerings are in there.

The other thing is that not all people will measure using the same
methodology, and tire height especially is a tricky one whose measurement
can be dependent on a lot of variables.

I'll plug in some data tonight on the Compass Babyshoe extra lights.

Re: [RBW] HIgh hopes on ebay

2014-11-11 Thread Eric Norris
Not sure I agree with this. In the real estate world, for instance, prices are
set by “comps,” which are homes that have actually sold. If someone on my block
put his/her home on the market for ten times the typical price, it wouldn’t
budge prices for the other homes one bit … until it sells for that price.

At that point, it would tend to raise the potential price of the other similar
homes.

If Mr. High Priced eBay Guy is actually *selling* things at high prices, it
will encourage others to raise the prices of their items (or it will encourage
buyers to bid more so they don’t get outbid). If he’s just posting his items at
high prices while others keep selling the same items at lower prices, it
doesn’t seem to me that prices overall would go up.

eBay is an free marketplace where people pay what they want to (willing
seller/willing buyer). Nobody is holding a gun to anybody’s head to make them
pay too much. As a previous poster to this thread suggested, there are many
reasons why people pay high prices for something—think about this the next time
you buy a single, chilled bottle of soda at the checkout counter for the same
price as an unchilled sixpack a few steps away in the store.

I too risked the wet and the cold today. Went out for lunch with my S.O.,

Re: [RBW] Re: HIgh hopes on ebay

2014-11-11 Thread Paul Brodek
So I kinda know pb*bikes, we talked once, and I've seen his postings on
various forums. I'm familiar with his operation and the ill-will he seems
to generate. He hasn't appointed me as his defender, and I'm not
volunteering for that roll, but I will present another side of the coin.

If you search his completed auctions and check his feedback, you will find
there are indeed quite a lot of buyers happy to pay his prices, and happy
with the value they receive. If one sleeps better thinking these happy
buyers are suckers or fools, so be it. Some of them may be. But the reality
is there are quite a few well-heeled collectors who place a premium on
their time, and would rather pay $500 for an NOS derailleur to finish off
their $15k Herse/Cinelli/whatever than spend hours on ebay trying to find a
clean-but-not-NOS one for less. I have customers with $50k monthly budgets
for their hobbies, and they don't blink plunking down their Amex Centurion
card for $40k worth of Leica, if Leica is what they want that month. You
need to charge at least $250k/yr to get an Amex Centurion card, so we're
talking big spenders. One guy bought a new Corvette last year with his
Centurion card---he wanted one, and he also wanted to see if the charge
would go through. It did.

As for sourcing, pb*bikes spends a lot of time sourcing this stuff from all
over the world. Working the phones, traveling to check forgotten warehouse
lots. He's got to grade, sort and photograph his inventory, handle all the
auctions and fulfillment. I think he might have an employee now, so he's
got a salary to meet as well. It's an interesting business model, he does
it well and seems to enjoy it, but it doesn't look to me like an easy way
to make a buck.

And yes, he is either directly or indirectly contributing to increasing
prices for vintage bicycle stuff. There is a finite amount of vintage
equipment on the planet, and as the deep pockets get the bug, prices go up.
Doesn't matter whether you blame the sellers or the buyers, it happens. You
either belly up to the bar and pay a premium, or you live without. Vintage
guitars, vintage audio, vintage Zippo lighters, vintage Levi's jeans,
vintage watches, vintage fly rods, vintage tons o' stuff---if people like
it and collect it, usually prices rise.

I've never bought a single item from him, don't reckon I ever will. I don't
care about NOS, and even if I did, I don't have that kind of budget. But I
don't think the majority of his customers are ignorant or idiots, and his
business model doesn't upset me.

As for filtering him out of your ebay search results, that's not hard to do
indirectly. You can input a price range on a search. Whatever part you're
looking for, set the high end of the range to whatever you think is
unreasonable. Then you won't see anything that'll upset you.

I started the blog mostly because it's an author's respo to assist the pub
in selling the books. It's not like--now I wrote it, now you sell it.
Not wanting to rewrite every entry, I starting doing stuff that i don't do
in the book--like photo food. It's easy, I do it at home as I'm making the
stuff.

There IS an entry titled Recalibrate Your Taste Buds (or something like
that) that deals with being able to eat cheaply and health-ily...and
another one titled Viva Canned Fish, in which I disclose that I love the
stuff. I eat low on the foodsnob pole (except for roquefort), and canned
fish is right there on the bottom.

But the book doesn't belabor that. It's mostly other stuff.
Anybody can look for free at eatbacondontjog.com. It's light reading, and
some of those platesfulla food are gorgeous.

It's a heck of a business model, and probably something they love doing.
Separating fools from their money that is. But I don't see how a *buyer*
would not take 30 seconds and find a new Nitto stem for half of what pb is
selling used for. If s/he is able to take their money, all hail pb!

I much prefer Pro's Closet out of CO: They offer excellent product, start a
low price, no reserve auction, and sell it at what the market determines.
They've established quite the reputation for quality.

I’ve been to Seattle and ridden there. The roads don’t *seem* to be magically

GBs are nice tires—I really like them—but in my experience they are just as
prone to flatting as anything else out there. Maybe more.

[RBW] FS: Nice Lugged Steel

2014-11-11 Thread Eric Norris
I’m selling a bike that’s perhaps a bit “racier” than most on this list, but I
thought someone here might like it … or know someone who does.

The bike is a 1980s Benotto, refinished by Joe Bell and equipped with
period-correct Campagnolo and Phil Wood equipment. Nice bike in excellent
condition.

Size is 57cm, with about a 56cm top tube (I don’t have the bike here, so I
can’t measure exactly). Comes with a Brooks Professional saddle.

Photo here shows the bike before I put a Super Record crankset back on, and
switched the rear mech to Super Record:

https://flic.kr/p/cg29vW

Here it is in random trim:

https://flic.kr/p/9BiiAW

The bike is currently at Edible Pedal, a small bike shop in downtown
Sacramento. Asking price is $1,300. If you have any questions, call Edible
Pedal and ask for John: 916-822-5969

The first link is the Hetre's casing don't see anything special and doesn't
seem substantial. When mounted They rode great. I do try to avoid debris
but I'm not fanatical about it, generally more concerned with other large
obstacles . I rode them on a fire road in the San Gabriel's which has
granite structures exposed which I suspect is different from Jan's gravel
roads.

The second link is the gash from said ride...tore then the tube squeezed
out and ruptured.

Jan did sell me replacement at cost, so I'll try em again just not on our
brand of off road.

Also realize I'm hijacking this post, my apologies. But this tire gets me
going.

The new Compass tires seem to have a bit more tread thickness than the
Grand Bois tires, IMO. I think they are a little more flat resistant
than the Grand Bois. That is not to say that you won't get flats, but
I think it's a reasonable amount.
