Welcome in, Jon. Good luck on the hunt. I think the subject matter 
immersion here acts as recovery from other less interesting wear and tear 
of the body and soul that life's path produces. I know I reverted to road 
riding from mountain biking. In that time I rediscovered how much fun it is 
to ride away beyond the pavement on whatever bike you have. Lots of folks 
here riding places and terrain that isn't conventional "road" biking.

Hmm, I don't have a scale.

Observations from the real world on last week's group ride: I didn't have 
to ride around standing water from recent rainfall to avoid striping my 
back, didn't have to ride around gravel on the roadway in places where 
streets had been torn up but not yet repaved, I was not unnerved by uneven 
road surfaces descending and I stopped to provide aid with my full-size 
frame pump to a rider on a CF super light who had a flat to a 23c tire and 
flubbed his CO2 thingy and had no other way to air up the new tube. As we 
rode back to the tail of the group I enjoyed my second bottle of water on 
the subsequent climb, CF guy stopped at a trash can along the river path 
and discarded both the tube and the empty gas bulbs. "Weighing me down". 
Yeah.

I'll weigh my Rambouillet sometime and it'll be a number. I tend to think 
of it as bringing enough bike when the peripherals draw weight 
consternation from the obsessive camp.

Q/R lever direction: In the old days there were two ways for the rear 
1. Horizontal forward
2. Bisecting the seat and chainstays

and two for the front:
1. Horizontal rear
2. Parallel with fork blade, more or less.

In time trials people made them parallel.

The safety argument for rearward front arguments and front backwards 
horizontal has made sense intuitively for most of a century, I'm sure, but 
kind of comes apart in real life, like this: 

 I remember reading Don't Do This because in a race (or presumably then 
anywhere in tight bike traffic) somebody's front tire could get in between 
the lever and the frame and wronch it open; and if not another rider's 
wheel, maybe a bush or a branch. But imagine the forces required for that 
to happen.

Whether it's another rider's wheel or a stick or anything else...the 
interference will make you crash instantly, and no stunt rider in the world 
could lever either q/r open while on the bike. So it comes down to habit, 
aesthetics, whatever else. I kind of like the 2 o'clock look and the "yeah, 
what of it?" message it sends. Anyway, the HAB hides it.

I don’t worry about going a little over the limit either but wouldn’t want

I like what you had to say about utility.  I agree that a truly stripped 
down bike that is often not enough bike for the job is kind of lame.  That 
said, a stripped down bike that is just enough bike for a stripped down 
application can be cool, too.  Anyway, the only build I have that I sweated 
the weight is not a Rivendell.  It's my main brevet bike.  I list it here, 
at the risk of being too far OT, just because it's a build kit that could 
work just as well on a Rivendell.  The summary highlight is that it's a 
steel frameset, wide tires, all metal parts, a front rack and decaleur, 
dynamo hub, front and rear lights, full coverage fenders and fender flap, 
and a bell, and still weighs 21.0 lbs.  It features a lot of nice MUSA 
parts.  




My Rawland Stag
Frameset: Rawland Stag Size Large (58cm), Jeff Lyon custom threadless fork, 
Miche headset

Wheelset:  White T11 R hub, Schmidt front, Pacenti PL23 rims, Pari-moto 
tires, Schwalbe SV14A tubes (from Riv), allen key skewers

Drivetrain:  Rene Herse cranks, Ultegra SPD pedals, Dura Ace 10sp F+R Ders, 
and DT shifters.  SRAM 11-26 cassette and chain, WI Ti BB.  

Components:  Soba bars, Kelly Stem, CR720 brakes (from Riv), modified 
Tektro brakelevers, Paul Funky Monkey hangers, Ultegra Seatpost, Selle 
Italia SLR Ti saddle, newbaums tape (from Riv)

Extras:  Grand Bois rack, Berthoud decaleur, hanging Edelux headlamp (from 
Riv), Ti King Cages (from Riv), alloy crane bell, Honjo hammered fenders, 
homemade flap, Pixeo battery powered taillight.

The only carbon bit on the bike is the rear derailer pulley cage has some 
carbon.  I did a few weight shaving tricks in the build.  I had been 
shooting for under 19lbs when the fenders and lights were off, but as you 
could predict, I never ride it with the fenders and lights removed, so who 
knows whether I actually made it.  :)

Given the mass of different objects, where does it make sense to go aluminum OR 
titanium over steel? Leaving out crabon since that's not the discussion
- seatpost
- Stem
- Bolts for braze ons
- Bottom Bracket
- Saddle rails
- Racks(Al)
- pedal spindles
- any others? Excluding frame

Where do you gain the most weight advatage by picking the lighter material?

I forget where you live, but if you have a local bike shop, the Wald basket 
should be gettable there.  It's a bummer to pay shipping for something as 
bulky and inexpensive as a Wald basket.

That is a bummer.  There are several shops in Berkeley and Oakland where I 
know I can just stroll in and grab basic things like that.  Merry Sales is 
a distributor that sources many Wald products, so whatever shop you walk 
into, you could just ask them if they order from Merry Sales.  If they do, 
then they can get you your Wald basket.  The only reason I recommend that 
is that shipping costs have gotten so out of hand, you might have a $20 
basket that costs $20 to ship.  Either way, best of luck.

[RBW] Wanted: 53 Roadeo or 54 Rambouillet

Like the title says I am looking for either a 53 Roadeo frame or a 54 
Rambouillet frame. I am on a budget so no completes unless you really feel like 
being nice to me. I would be open to other rivendell frames but want to build a

I feel like you're misrepresenting our fair city. There are plenty of shops 
in Chicago that stock Wald Baskets. I've gotten them in the past at Cycle 
Smithy and Upgrade. I'm sure Boulevard had them in stock. 

BTW, Smart Bike Parts in Logan Square places orders daily with distributors 
so you can get stuff really fast (next day from QBP) and still keep your 
$$$ local without paying shipping.

My wife did buy a pair of Ginghers in 2006 (soon after the 2005 merger) 
which couldn't cut right. She returned them for another pair with the same 
problem. They may have both been mislabeled Left Handed scissors, since she 
had to turn them upside-down to get them to work. I think she sorted it out 
with them, but it was stressful.

I think Fiskars makes great scissors. I also think more smaller companies 
making things is cooler than fewer larger companies making things.

Those Atlantis and San Marcos weights are really impressive.  That Atlantis 
build has basically nothing light on it, has full-on heavy wheels, and 
still is only 26 pounds?  That's a big surprise.   The San Marcos would be 
under 20lbs if you took off the kickstand, pump and seat bag?  That's 
incredible.  I never would have thought that possible.  It's got 2 top 
tubes for gosh sake!  There are pounds to be taken off both builds, but 
'reasonable' is in the eye of the beholder.  I assume you mean reasonable 
in dollars.  Chasing grams on a perfectly good build is a fool's errand. 
 Chasing grams from a blank sheet of paper is bad enough.

I'm loyal to Turin but they don't have what I need.  The pedals I'd prefer to 
buy the thru riv as they made the introduction and undercut everyone but ebay 
stores.  Ultimately the basket's inconsequential.  I called rapid transit and 
they have some selection so I may go that route.  

On another note,  wasn't one of you Chicagoans makings waxed canvas bags?  If 
so, I need some patchwork done.

I had my eyes dilated for an eye exam this morning before I weighed the 
bikes.  The Atlantis and Santana weights are correct, but the Sam Marcos is 
26.5 pounds.  I thought 21.5 was too good to be true.  Sorry for the bum

I would have to agree, both of those weights look very optimistic. My 
lightest steel bike is a 54cm Della Santa made with very lightweight OS 
tubing, full Campy Record 10-speed group, Ti stem and seatpost, Speedplay 
pedals,  and non-leather seat with Ti rails, yet it is just under 20 lbs.

Haha!  26.5 is much more believable.  

That Atlantis is still hot at 26lbs, because it's so bomber and still 
respectable in weight.  You could drop 2 pounds or more but it may cost you 
$1500 to do it.

The Atlantis deserves a better wheelset, but it will have to wait; the

[RBW] Upcoming visit to the Bay Area - With bike - Recommendations?

There are a couple of other threads from a while back that broached this 
subject, but I thought I would start a new one for freshness' sake.

So, I'll be travelling to SF in a couple of weeks for some brief vacation 
time, and will be bringing a bike along with me. Naturally, I have done my 
share of reading ride reports and ogling others' pictures over the years, 
but please share your favourite online resources and tips. I have been to 
SF once before, in 2008, so I am generally familiar with the layout of the 
place. I didn't do any cycling then, though.

Timeframe is August 18-26. For the first few days I'll be staying with 
friends in Berkeley; the rest at an AirBNB in Oakland.

Would like to explore Marin, Berkeley Hills, Diablo and Walnut Creek, and 
the city proper. Any kind of day ride, really. Open to any suggestions you 
might have! Of course, I'm up for some rides with other list folks, if you 
are around during the weekdays. 

Also, my GF will also be joining me - but *sans-velo* - from the 23rd 
onwards the after attending a conference in BC, and would interested in 
either borrowing a bike from a list members or hearing about good bike 
rental options for the weekend. Anyone in the Oakland area have an un-fancy 
52-56cm-ish guest bike to lend out?

20.8 lbs. - That ain't bad for a bike I didn't really prioritize light 
weight on. The only thing I would add to this bike to go out on a ride is

and a couple of allen keys of appropriate size.

[RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)

Well, pain hasn't subsided after all this time so I went to the doctor. The 
tentative diagnosis is a torn meniscus. MRI tomorrow morning and an appointment 
with a sports medicine MD to determine whether I should do PT or have surgery.

Over the weekend I talked with Vince at Riv about saddle height. I checked my 
saddle height and it was maybe a half-inch *high* after all my afore mentioned 
fiddling around. Unknown if this was the culprit or exasperated an existing 
condition. 

I should add that decades of backing up a touring motorcycle from a riding 
position took its toll as well. (Black 1973 BMW R75/5 with a toaster tank for 
those inquiring minds)

Anyway, keep y'all posted as I know more. In the meantime, still off the bike.

My curousity beat my "who cares?" attitude.  58 cm Atlantis, pretty 
standard Rivendell build (Brooks, Sugino triple, etc), with Soma C-lines on 
Mavic A-719 rims, Tubus Cosmo rear rack & small Nitto front, Acorn boxy bag 
with usual assortment of junk:  36-1/2 lbs.(dry; no water).  Since I had 
the scale handy I weighed the Acorn bag alone @ 5 lbs.

To get under 30 lbs would mean giving up a lot of utility (not my 
kickstand!).  Ain't gonna happen.  Still, this is a fun exercise every once 
in a while.  IIRC, my bike always gains weight.  

Just weighed my wife's 47 cm Atlantis:  30 lbs as she usually rides it:  
Riv built plus kickstand, cheap aluminum rack with REI trunk bag, and small 
Acorn handlebar bag.  Without the trunk bag, 27 lbs.  32 hole wheels 
w/Compass tires.  Can't recall the seat but it's not a Brooks, something 
lighter.

It would be reasonable to expect a Hunqapillar to weight about two pounds 
more than an Atlantis with roughly the same components and accessories. At 
least that is my experience. Some of the difference in my case is the 
26x1.5 Pasela tires on my Atlantis are significantly lighter than the 
700x50 Schwalbe Big Bens on the Hunq. 

This thread is interesting - so much of the weight of a bike is in the 
components, lights, accessories, racks, bags, and what is inside the bags. 
That stuff has weight, but it is what makes a bicycle more comfortable, 
practical and useful.

Looking back on your original post everyone came though exactly as desired and 
expected.  Unfortunately advice occasionally contradicted even the ever wise 
Deacon and the extremely intelligent Michael.  Even Grant himself weighed in 
with a logical possibility.
Fortunately you are moving forward with your own perspective and trusted your 
mind and gut.
Just curious whether the pain location has centralized more over the last few 
days towards the inside or outward portion of the knee cap?
If the MRI reveals the initial diagnosis of a meniscus tear feel free to 
contact me off line again or give me a call.  My 22 year old daughter has had 3 
meniscus surgeries which ended her college volleyball career but with excellent 
PT she bikes as well as ever and now has essentially no other limitations.
Hopeful for a simple, swift, and satisfactory return to your steeds.

Plenty of options in the East Bay! I assume you are road riding? I live on 
the Oakland/Berkeley border and tend to ride up Tunnel Rd to Grizzly Peak 
with a plethora of options from there. I like Tunnel Road just on the 
Oakland side because even though its a long 45 minutes up, the grade is 
never super steep, very manageable. Shasta Rd in Berkeley (near the 
university) is another easy way up. Once you're up in the hills there are 
many options, with not many cars. Here's a few of my common routes for 
point of reference:

Oakland to Walnut Creek short version (one big climb and descent, followed 
by multi use bike paths): http://www.strava.com/routes/239659
Oakland to Walnut Creek, longer hillier 
version: http://www.strava.com/routes/264659
Oakland To Orinda BART (i think this is called the 3 bears loop, lots of 
climbing!): http://www.strava.com/routes/239640
Tour of Oakland: http://www.strava.com/routes/277550 (one small climb 
followed by mostly flat ride. Starts in Rockridge, through Montclair, up in 
the hills, down through Piedmont, Lake Merrit, over the Bay Bridge, very 
urban with traffic but fun)

Those are some of the ones I like leaving from Oakland. Plenty more riding 
around Walnut Creek and Diablo and I'm sure others will chime in. Have fun! 
I'll be around for a weekend ride.

[RBW] Hammered Honjo shopping confusion. Help!

OK, looking around online yields so many hammered models my head is 
spinning.

There seems to be different model numbers depending on which vendors' site 
I view.
Prices seem to range wildly. By more than 50% for hammered Honjos.

Are they the same, but the different vendors use their own in house model 
numbers? What is going on here?

Is there a resource that lists all the current hammered models in one 
place, so I can make a decision on one, and then go price shopping? Like a 
Honjo home page?

Thanks for the tidbits. I'm still weighing the pros and cons of bringing 
the Rambouillet vs. bringing the Cross Check. Variety of reasons; 
versatility, gearing and componentry, tires, prospective emotional response 
to sustained airline misdoings or to theft, fitting the bike into a bike 
box, etc, etc.

I would certainly like to do some of everything! I just need to pedal as 
fast as I can from thing to thing, right?

Good question, Ryan! I would say that while initially I felt the pain to be on 
the outside/front of my knee, just now it seems more on the inside front just 
below the kneecap.  The knee has been buckling, they felt a lot of fluid under 
the kneecap, and the pain is punctuated (she says with a good deal of 
understatement) when extending the lower leg/descending. These are all symptoms.

Glad to hear your daughter's tale. Will keep you posted.

This is a ridiculous summer of stupid injury for me.

[RBW] For Sale / Trade : Nitto Bosco Bullmoose

Hi I would be interested in seeing if we could come up with a trade that might 
work! While I don't have any of the items, do have a number of goodies in my 
parts bin, including but not limited to: black paul touring canti brake, nitto 
dirt drop stem, several nitto technomic of stems of various length, nitto 
moustache bars, plescher dual kickstand, avid bb7 mechanical disc brakes, nitto 
torsion bar, Shimano no SLX trigger shifters...I have a lot more but I can't 
recall all of it without looking at it. Let me know if you have any interest 
and I can let you know of some of the other goodies I maybe neglected to 
mention.

Oh.  I see I'm not playing nice.

Model: 2013 Sam Hillborne
Framesize: 52 cm (old sizing)
Weight:  35 lbs includes Sackville small seat bag with Sackville tool roll 
inside (tube, patch kit, multitool inside), empty bottles, Acorn handlebar 
bag (empty), bottles (empty), and Zefal Pump.  I am going to guess 31-32 
lbs without all of that.

It is a standard build with change outs of noodle bars for Albas and 
additions of a Brooks B67 saddle, Shimano Dura-Ace bar ends for silver 
levers, and Thin Gripsters.  The 36 hole Velocity Atlas front rim was 
changed out for a 32 hole Velocity Synergy with a Shimano LX Dynamo and 
there is an Eyc front headlamp (cool little light) and Dyno Rack Light.  I 
added a Nitto Mark's Front Rack M1 and Nitto M14 in back.  Hoommm.  Let's 
not be hasty.  I guess i's not a standard build any more.  That seems to 
happen with these bikes.
