[RBW] Re: Why no more Quickbeam/ SimpleOne?

2013-11-24 Thread Philip Williamson
My best time on the 1 mile hill on the lunch loop was on the Quickbeam with
an 82" gear. Hard, but I've worked just as hard on the geared bikes I ride
on that loop.
I've had my QB since they were launched, and I'd ride it anywhere. The
other Sheldonish thing about them is that a dingle (two gears, shifted
manually) setup is easy and encouraged. Two rings and a Dingle fixed cog or
White Dos Eno freewheel puts you 15 seconds away from a much more
appropriate gear.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for gloves below 35 degrees F?

2013-11-24 Thread IanA
Gets pretty cold up here, with wind chill just in the last week it was -28
Celsius (minus 18F) on my six mile snow laden commute to work, I have some
mitts very similar to these
http://outdoorjay.blogspot.ca/2013/02/mec-logan-mitts-review.html with
removable fleece inners and the leather outers. I sometimes have to bunch
my thumb and fingers together inside the mitts until I get a bit warmed up,
but these mitts have been amazing for warmth. I would think any high
quality ski mitts would work well. I have the inline/interrupter levers
and 46cm Noodle bars and find that it's easy to brake with the
interrupters/mitts combo, but the drop levers are more of a challenge with
mitts on.

The low pressure system that brought us an early winter has thankfully
passed through and we're back into 0 degree (32F) weather give or take for
a few days. The studded tires won't e off until April, probably. A long
winter ahead.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for gloves below 35 degrees F?

2013-11-24 Thread Eric Platt
Below 35 usually some Capo gloves that do a good job of blocking the wind.
They have some padding which is why I chose them. Below about 25 then
will pull out either some lobster gloves or choppers (deerskin mitten
covers over ragg wool mittens). Had the latter on a ride yesterday when
the temps were about 15 or so. If I'm silly enough to be out when it's
below zero, then probably be a set of pogie mittens from Empire Canvas.
Definite overkill. Also really tough to use on a drop bar bike.

[RBW] mechanical issues

2013-11-24 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
2 annoying mechanical issues on my Sam Hillborne:

   1. Creaking - sometimes more, sometimes less, but dramatic enough to be
easily heard by someone riding next to me. Tried so far - tightening chain
ring bolts; cleaning, oiling and finaly replacing the chain; playing with
FD trim until cross-eyed, check BB for play. Next steps - replace pedals,
replace BB even though no play, ...?
   2. Rear shifting - indexed bar end shifter was skipping my favorite cog
(15T), so yesterday I replaced the cassette, thinking I had waited too long
to replaced the chain a few weeks ago. Now it's skipping all over in
indexed mode, both up and down. Tightening the cable (also recently
replaced) didn't help either so I switched to friction, which is of course
fine. I have nothing against friction, but I don't like it when things
don't work. In this case I'm commuting in traffic with a 40-26 in front, so
for this terrain it's essentially a 1X9 and I want indexing.

I don't have access to a Rivish LBS anymore, and no one I know around
here has ever seen a bar end shifters. So it's just you guys.

Thanks,
Jay

[RBW] Re: mechanical issues

2013-11-24 Thread ted
Jay,

If shifting and gears work fine in friction mode but not indexed, the
indexing must not be putting the derailleur in the proper location at the
clicks. To get it correct adjust the barrel adjuster at the rear
derailleur. You want the chain centered on the cog. Most likely if you look
closely you will see it is off to one side of the other. You can also lift
the rear wheel and turn the cranks to see if the chain is catching on the
next larger cog but not fully shifting to it. If that is going on try
turning the barrel adjuster in (clockwise) a quarter of 1/8th turn at t
time till it stops (assuming rd is top normal and not rapid rise).

On the creaking, that can be hard to track down. If you are sure its coming
from the crank / bb area, you might try pulling the cranks and reinstalling
with a bit of grease on the bb tapers and bolts. Doing the same with the
pedals may help. Others here will likely give you many other things to try.
Chasing down creaks can be very exasperating. My sympathies for your
plight, and bets of luck getting it silenced.

[RBW] mechanical issues

2013-11-24 Thread Kelly
Noises suck.. Chased one all morning once only to find here was still ice from
the last ride I'm the insulated water bottle.
Creak instead of knock.. Seat post / saddle - handlebars / stem ... Noise only
when pedaling or when climbing when?

Shifting .. I do this ..
Loosen cable completely and make sure it's on the little cog and smooth... Or
adjust limit screw - with rapid rise this would be the large cog.
Note the lever would be all the way down in indexed mode. Then with needle
nose pliers I pull the cable tight and secure it. Most times it just works
from there. I manged to mess it up by pulling to tight or not tight enough in
that the shift cable is obviously loose or I pull so hard the derailler moves.
I then us cable adjuster to fine time the setup.
Note I generally screw the adjuster all the way in on new cables since they
stretch so much at first. After that I leave it about center.

If it still doesn't shift make sure or better yet check first that the cable is
moving smoothly in the housing. Even new it's possible to miss a kink on the
end or something.

Good luck

windproofed commuter gloves from City Sports for around town and "classy" time,
some Garneau full fingers if I'm full off road to keep dexterity.

Mine started creaking and I couldn't tell where it was coming from on the
bike. Bounce in your saddle a few times and see if that is what it is.
2.Snug brake lever mounting bolts.
3.Thoroughly grease stem shaft and wedge and reinsert into head tube.
4.Snug up every bolt you can find on the bike including water bottle

Re: [RBW] Late to the Jacket Party

2013-11-24 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm not in the market for one, and frankly I'd rather wear more
conventional cycling clothing; BUT!:

IF I were commuting regularly as I did pre-2008, and IF this jacket is
superior to, say, my Patagonia stretch knit that blocks wind but not sweat
(rain for me is really a non-issue), I THINK I could justify the almost
$450 price.

The Patagonia jacket -- a slim fitting blouse style with cycling tail --
works very well, though.

However, I could only wear it on my expensive, vanity Riv Customs.

(I am kidding, idiots!)

[RBW] Re: Why no more Quickbeam/ SimpleOne?

2013-11-24 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
The Quickbeam is still my preferred bike. Simple, predictable,
comfortable. At times challenging and painful. But always a consistent
yardstick. Always patient and encouraging when I'm lacking.

You can set it up a myriad of ways - change and add gearing options.

All that being said, it's definitely a niche within the narrow-but-widening
niche of Rivendell ride enthusiasts. Way back when the Coleman Green QB's
were announced and sold out, I think it was done so with the knowledge that
it would always be a bicycle with more limited demand. The SO was just the

Re: [RBW] Re: Did Cavemen Eat Yams?

2013-11-24 Thread Patrick Moore
I'll agree to this. Bringing in "cavemen" is explaining the obscure by the
conjectural.

Giving in shamelessly to the temptation to offer another, hardly on topic,
topic, I've been having fun reading *1491*, the second edition. Apparently
corn as the Indians knew it (let along our modern hybrids) took years of
deliberate modification, since the ancestral teosinte (the author says) is
hardly a food plant -- which raises obvious questions of motive

Anyway, no caveman can ride *my* bikes.

[RBW] Winter Delaware Water Gap trip

2013-11-24 Thread Paul Germain

There's not nearly enough Right Coast content here, so I wanted to chime in
with the story this trip on my Sam up and down the Delaware (River) Water Gap
between upper NJ & PA. (The river forms the state boundary.)

Early this past spring, Joan Oppel posted pics of her trip in the Water Gap
with a group of eastern Riv owners that included Steve Palincsar, Tom Robinson
and others at the annual Cirque du Cylisme in Leesburg, VA. Though I'm 7 hours
away from upper PA, down in balmy Richmond, VA, I could not erase the thought
of getting to experience that area for myself. Life (and a number of other
rides) got in the way and I found 2013 waning, so decided to go for it, driving
up on a Tues. so I could ride the trip Wed. & Thurs.

Temps were in the mid-30's to mid-40's with a reading of 15 degrees on my bike
computer on day two when I crawled out of the tent. As ya'll say, pictures
prove it happened - text describing the trip is on the Flickr set:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/sets/72157637953125903/

I can recommend this area for a near car-free trip. This PDF map of the Water
Gap takes a few seconds to load, but gives an excellent idea of the area:

[RBW] Caveman ketchup

2013-11-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Not too off topic, I hope, given all the "paelo" stuff.

Can anyone recommend a ketchup that is not hugely over-sweetened like
Heinz's typical, with all its corn syrup? I don't care about the carbs, I
just very much dislike the way the sugar masks the flavor.

I've found Westbrae here:

http://www6.netrition.com/westbrae_veggie_ketchup.html

at a reasonable price (not paying $7.50 for Dean and DeLuca), but how does
it *taste*?

Or can someone take me to a reliable (and personally tested, if
recommended) recipe?

Thanks.

(And what wine goes best with ketchup?)

I am loving my 66cm orange QuickBeam. I have a DOS ENO freewheel on one side,

brings smiles to all who see it, and to me especially when I ride it. But I
also understand RBW's economics on this, it was an expensive frame, much the
same price as a road frame with rear attachment point for a derailleur. Maybe
there's a future frame coming that will have an attachment for shifting as well
as semi-horizontal rear forks to allow for wheelbase adjustment.

I'm also a big fan of their PaleoKits (jerky and nuts), which are great meals

Great looking trip. I'm originally from northern New Jersey, and would
love to ride that area again some time. Not, though, in November, at

My wife took up canning last year and made a tomato jam that is very good as a
ketchup sort of thing as well as being a nice change of pace from sweet jams
and jellies. She found the recipe on the foodinjars.(com, I think) website.

2013-11-24 Thread Will
I think they went away because the world has tens of thousands of decent
1970s and 1980s 531 lugged, butted, frames with horizontal rear drop outs.
Most have road-sport geometry (73 degree seat tubes), many have clearance
for 32mm tires. You can make a single speed, a very good one, for the price
of a rear wheel.

I got a pair in my last

the day, I can go bare handed, but sometimes in the late afternoons or
evenings it gets chilly for bare hands. These half mitts are light, pack
easily anywhere and warm up your hands when it gets too chilly. I am
commuting in them now and we will see how cold it can be for them to stay
functional. When they are not doing the job, I might try a pair of light
gloves under them instead of just switching to heavier gloves. Layering,
 all about the layering.

I am so glad they added the thumbs.

I wish they would put a reflective strip on the back for signalling,
etc... as cold weather often goes together with dark.

Re: [RBW] Re: Some 650b conversion pics

2013-11-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Isn't the sole point of this conversion exercise that you can use *fatter*
tires, and significantly fatter tires? So, while you might lose some bb
height, you won't lose nearly the whole 19 mm ?

A 622X23 mm tire is about 26 1/2" in diameter. A 559 X 1" tire is about 24"
in diameter. A 559X35 mm tire is about 25" in diameter. A 559 X 50 tire is
about 26" in diameter. I cite these only as being directly or indirectly
relevant sizes known to me by experience.

Thus, if you went from a 700C X 25 to a 650B X 42, which seems common,
wouldn't you gain back some 10 to 15 mm?

Re: [RBW] Re: Some 650b conversion pics

2013-11-24 Thread Jim Cloud
The early models of the Rivendell Road were designed for a 700x28c tire
size, I don't believe you would be able to fit a 650x42b size tire between
the chainstays of those particular bikes (I also own an original 1996 model
of the Road Standard).

I don't, however, see a post by the OP that indicates what is the tire size
that he fitted to his bike. The tread pattern, however, looks like one
used by RIvendell. The only tire that Rivendell currently sells in the
650b size that's a Rivendell design is the Maxy Fasty which is a 650Bx33.5
size.

[RBW] Re: OT but brings a tear to my eye

2013-11-24 Thread Tom Virgil

Dear Hugh,

Thank you for the kind words. Indeed, my dear wife, Jahan, is my
inspiration and motivator for caring. The current plan is do some serving
at Father Joe's in the early AM and return home for a mostly pre-prepared
Thanksgiving meal with family at home. We are allowing our daughters to
get things warmed up on the home front. They will pull it off.

We will be taking something to our "fool on the hill", Alejandro. For
those of you who were not on our ride, this is a homeless Mexican man in
our area who plies a huge cart of belongings up and down Del Mar Heights
and Carmel Valley Roads each day. He mostly lives out in the weeds and
manages to defy or slip by any ministrations from social services. or any
other authorities. I try and talk to him from time to time, but my Spanish
as a second language and the demons that plague him mostly get in the way.
I have always thought it is a matter of time before this ends for him, but
he keeps at it. It's like he is on a mission of some sort. I can get a
hearty "?Hola, como seta?" and a laugh out of him as he sees this foolish
American guy riding a bike when he owns perfectly good cars.

I hope you especially, and all of the Rivsters, have a blessed, wonderful
Thanksgiving. We are fortunate,to have these cool bikes, ride though and
get to great places, and have the opportunity to get to know each other and
grow relationships. That has been new for me this year and I acknowledge
it.

Best Regards,

Tom

[RBW] Recommendations for a front derailer on a compact double?

2013-11-24 Thread Mike On A Bike
I just set up my Sam with a 48/34 White Industries crankset and I need a
new derailer for this drivetrain setup. It was probably just my mechanical
ineptitude, but I couldn't get my Campy "Mirage" derailer (that I had for a
triple) to work with it. I've not been thrilled with the Mirage anyhow, so
I want to get a new derailer that is ideal for a double.

I am thinking Shimano XT would be the best bet, but there are so many
models, I don't know which to pick (or if there is something better at a
similar price). Can any of you running double cranksets recommend a good
choice for me?

Many thanks!

Got to explore last weekend solo.

Left late, ended early. Pretty daunting to be in the shadow of the mountain
that you have to climb over. But
like most things in life that daunting task can be tackled one step (er..
pedal rotation?) at a time.

Pictures proved that Mark Abele was right. Mitchell canyon was hard:

[RBW] Re: Why no more Quickbeam/ SimpleOne?

2013-11-24 Thread grant
Nothing's ever for sure gone for good, but here's the thing with the
SimpleBeams (forgive the gross generalizations used to make the point
without accounting for exceptions. I will use "everybody" not in the
literal sense):

Everybody moans the loss of a bike they didn't buy when it was availabe.
The SB was always the slowest seller of all time, which in itself isn't the
end of the world, but what it means for us is---it was a cash flow killer.
We pay fully for 100 of them about two months before they arrive. Then it
takes a year and a half or two years to sell them.
One thing that seems to happen is--when something's readily available, it's
meh...and when it's gone, the heart grows fonder genuinely--and maybe
people who would have been buyers when the bike was around have just
learned about it and think hey I'd like that. But there is a small tendency
to overenthuse about what can't be had. I do it myself with other things in
my life.
*Dang, they quit making that __ I've hemmed and hawed about and admired
for years, but never wanted enough to buy, but now that I can't buy it,
shoot!*I don't mean that's rampant here, and I DO like that the bikes are
so well-liked. Me too. I sold my QB when I needed money, figured I could
always get a SO, and now they're gone and I want one more than ever.
So---I'm not just an observer of this phenomenon, but a participant!
If we could pre-sell 30 of them. Paid two-months before they arrive (that's
when our payment is due), I'd stick my neck out and order 100. This time
they'd be slightly different, and the danger of this hypothetical scenario
is that it would open a debate about what's the difference between the new
and old, which is preferable, then a vote, and it all gets weird and half
the people who expressed willingness to get a new one now feel dis-listened
to and bummed because it didn't go that way.
So...i'd be innerested only if I had free secret rein to tweak it this
way and that, still resulting in a killer one-speed, but not a clone of the
SO, which was a clone of the QB. It might be any color, any name, any kind
of break, any anything. I totally get that ordering semi-blind isn't easy
to do. The unblind part of the semi is: Track or horizontal dropouts angled
to allow pad contact over a wide range of chainlengths, like QB/SO. Two
bottle mounts, rackable. good clearance. Basically Sam-like with diff
dropouts. Probably sidepulls but could be cantis. A perfectly good color, a
good name, a nice badge, a really great singler.

Serious agreers will PM cyclofiend (Jim! So sorryplease forgive
me...but these months I have so many kaleidiscopes in my head that I can't
have another one), and if the list reaches 30 (meaning you'll have $1200
by Dec 2014 for the frame/fork/headset, and the money won't evaporate in a
divorce or unforseeable crisis), then we'll get some good frames.

I have a full plate and I know it seems so bad to say I can't answer
questions about this, but for the next few months I probably can't. You can
try, and I'll try, but I'm at my physicalemotional limit, and ... can't
promise. If you send a postcard, I'll respond with a postcard.

Is this all too much? Probably. Sorry again.

If nothing happens now, I think the bike will happen again later, but it
may be an extra year or two.

I know there are lots of options out there. I'm not trying to make this a
difficult mystery bike. My crazy proposal..is the only way that makes
sense for us right now.

Thanks..

Grant

Re: [RBW] Re: 11-24-13 - a set on Flickr

2013-11-24 Thread Eric Norris
That's the "Gott's" restaurant at the Oxbow Market in Napa. I had a delicious
BLT and some very tasty onion rings.

Gott's is what was once "Taylor's Refresher." The name changed due to a dispute
between the current owners and the founder's estate, which took back the
Taylor's name.

[RBW] Re: Solo riding is good riding.

2013-11-24 Thread Mike
Dude, I was just looking at these images before I checked in on the list.
Great set. I was almost gonna ask if it was a solo ride. It seemed like it.
Somehow your pictures capture the solitude. But not a dour solitude, a
whimsical solitude. As usual, your pictures are infectious. One more day of
work and then off for three and will hopefully get out for at least one
ride.

Pictures prove it happened? I believe.

[RBW] Re: Why no more Quickbeam/ SimpleOne?

2013-11-24 Thread Philip Williamson
Whoa. There you go.

My Quickbeam is still my prettiest, bestest bike ever. I've ridden it up
and down steep steep singletrack, long (for me) road rides, and commuted.
Still the bike I'll spend the most money making prettier. If I had
unlimited funds, I'd commission a custom Riv with vertical drops, Atlantis
clearance, and Roadeo tubing. Single it up with a White ENO hub. Lie about
my weight and riding conditions.

A QB by any other name (and 10 years refinement) is still as sweet.

Re: [RBW] Re: Some 650b conversion pics

2013-11-24 Thread Jim Bronson
My bike is an older custom that had 700x28 on it when I got it used in
2005/6. Probably designed around 700x28 for the original owner. I had
been running Grand Bois Cypress 700x32 for a while but with minimal brake
clearance.

I took it on a post-conversion 130 mile shakedown ride yesterday and
handling seems to be unaltered. I even pedaled around a u-turn on a narrow
road and didn't suffer a pedal strike, which I had been worried about.

I was running Nifty Swifties which are labeled as 650b x "32.8 mm or so".
I also installed P45 cream long boards that I got from Rivendell. Those
were not depicted in the images in the thread starter. It was wonderful to
have the fenders as temperatures hovered in the mid to upper 30s with
intermittent drizzle all day. Not exactly chamber of commerce weather for
Central Texas.

For me, running fatter tires with fenders is the whole reason I did the
conversion in the first place. So far I am pretty happy with it. I will
try wider tires still when I get around to it. I have some Pacenti
Pari-motos waiting in the garage, 650b x 38. I'm pretty sure those and
the 42s also will fit. I may have cut the fender stays a bit short but I'm
sure spare parts are available.

Re: [RBW] Re: Why no more Quickbeam/ SimpleOne?

2013-11-24 Thread cyclotourist
Put up or shut-up time people... My QB is by far my favorite bike.
Unfortunately also my least ridden, which made it hard to justify, but
there's something special about it! I sold my first one, thinking I
didn't really need it (see low miles above) and kicked myself
near-weekly till I found one to replace it. So glad I did, and not
letting this one get away!

I hope 30 of you are Beam-curious enough to invest in one!

Everybody moans the loss of a bike they didn't buy when it was availabe.

The SB was always the slowest seller of all time, which in itself isn't
 the
end of the world, but what it means for us is---it was a cash flow
 killer.
We pay fully for 100 of them about two months before they arrive. Then
 it
takes a year and a half or two years to sell them.
One thing that seems to happen is--when something's readily available,
it's meh...and when it's gone, the heart grows fonder genuinely--and
 maybe
people who would have been buyers when the bike was around have just
learned about it and think hey I'd like that. But there is a small
 tendency
to overenthuse about what can't be had. I do it myself with other things
 in
 my life.
*Dang, they quit making that __ I've hemmed and hawed about and

bikes are so well-liked. Me too. I sold my QB when I needed money,
 figured
I could always get a SO, and now they're gone and I want one more than
ever. So---I'm not just an observer of this phenomenon, but a
 participant!
If we could pre-sell 30 of them. Paid two-months before they arrive
(that's when our payment is due), I'd stick my neck out and order 100.
 This
time they'd be slightly different, and the danger of this hypothetical
scenario is that it would open a debate about what's the difference
 between
the new and old, which is preferable, then a vote, and it all gets weird

and half the people who expressed willingness to get a new one now feel

dis-listened to and bummed because it didn't go that way.
So...i'd be innerested only if I had free secret rein to tweak it
this way and that, still resulting in a killer one-speed, but not a
 clone
of the SO, which was a clone of the QB. It might be any color, any name,

any kind of break, any anything. I totally get that ordering semi-blind

isn't easy to do. The unblind part of the semi is: Track or horizontal
dropouts angled to allow pad contact over a wide range of chainlengths,

like QB/SO. Two bottle mounts, rackable. good clearance. Basically
 Sam-like
with diff dropouts. Probably sidepulls but could be cantis. A perfectly

good color, a good name, a nice badge, a really great singler.

Serious agreers will PM cyclofiend (Jim! So sorryplease forgive
me...but these months I have so many kaleidiscopes in my head that I
 can't
have another one), and if the list reaches 30 (meaning you'll have $1200

by Dec 2014 for the frame/fork/headset, and the money won't evaporate in
 a
divorce or unforseeable crisis), then we'll get some good frames.

I have a full plate and I know it seems so bad to say I can't answer
questions about this, but for the next few months I probably can't. Yo

Re: [RBW] Re: Some 650b conversion pics

2013-11-24 Thread Jim Bronson
I have the Nifty Swifty installed in the pics. They are very inexpensive,
and I wanted something to try out 650b with, without having to invest $120
or more in tires. I got the Nifty Swifty tires for $26 each from
ebikestop.com.

The Maxy Fasty is the same as the Nifty Swifty but without the Nifty
Swifty's extra flat protection belt.

How wide is your Road Standard's chain stay bridge? Would be interesting
to compare. Mine is not very wide. Barely enough to accommodate the
fender.

[RBW] Re: mechanical issues

2013-11-24 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
A few more details in case anyone is still reading this:

Creaking happens under hard pedalling. I feel it through my feet, so it
really seems like it's coming from the crank area. It started a few weeks
after I replaced chain rings (from Sugino triple to 40-26-bashguard) and
the chain ring bolts were a bit loose when I tightened them. Honestly, I
don't remember if I greased the cranks before reinstalling them. I
usually do, but I had them off for cleaning not too much before so maybe I
figured they were good enough. I'll pull, clean, regrease and reinstall
them this weekend.

Shifting - With the old cassette, Shimano 11-34, the only issue I noticed
while riding was failure to shift up from 18T to 15T. I had to shift twice,
to 13T and them down again if I wanted that gear. It had been fine before
that for a long time until I replaced the chain. New and old chains were
both Shimano. With the new SRAM 11-34 cassette, on the stand, it is
skipping cogs going in both directions. I would think that the cable could
be either too loose or too tight, not both. I will try the adjustment
procedure described here and hope nothing is bent. Derailler is LX from
Jensen's ($30 NOS if anyone needs). I wouldn't expect any compatability
issues, but maybe that's part of it?
