[RBW] Re: Will Schwalabe Marathon HS 420 - 700x45 - fit on a 59cm Homer Hilsen?

2013-10-06 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
Maybe 6 months ago... and just for fun I put a 50mm Big Apple on the front
of my AHH. It barely fit (no fender). I did not try the rear, but I think
it's possible it would have fit.

Keep cycling and maybe do some resistance/weight training to build up

a lot of others as well. Also, in my experience, eliminating those from my

So bummed I couldn't make this. What a beautiful day. I'll have to figure
out where Clapstop Butte is and go check it out.

I'm off the next two weekends so maybe some of us can get together for a
Sunday morning ramble one of those weekends. Now is the best time of the
year to ride Dixie Mtn.

Pictures from the first time I rode it years ago. One of the first big
rides I did on my Hilsen. It's such an amazingly beautiful ride in the fall.

[RBW] Re: Winter cycling pants

2013-10-06 Thread Garth

Sierra Trading Post is a great place to shop indeed. As I do not wear wool,
I have found med. weight long underwear bottoms of Comfortel (very soft
cotton like polyester with some lycra) to be outstanding. I've worn them
for years and am amazed they still have them !!
They have them in lightweight med. weight and heavyweight versions, tall
and regular.
http://www.sierratradingpost.com/s~wickers-bottom-men/

Down to about the low 40's , I'll often wear these under my shorts, as they
wear just like boxers, only they're full length.

Re: [RBW] 200km in January suggestions

2013-10-06 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
As noted, that was a previous year's ride. Rob (our RBA) has just
submitted the 2014 calendar. If you are interested, you should join the
SFR which will put you on the email list for announcements. Joining is
free.

And, I'm NOT going to try to tell someone from MN what weather is like, but
January is "winter" in the SF Bay Area, and if you poke around in the
archives (JimG via yojimg.net has some ride reports) you'll find that some
years it is unutterably beautiful, but some years - the wet years - can be
some of the soggiest, dampest, coldest times you might spend on a bike.

But, yeah... it's a great ride -

[RBW] FS: 60cm STT Sam Hillborne F/F +fenders + racks + wheels

2013-10-06 Thread Thomas B
Up for sale is my 60cm STT, lovely green Sam frame and fork, fitted with
Bethoud SS fenders, a Nitto top rack and Nitto mini-front. The wheels are
XT hubs (old kind) laced to Mavic A119 rims in silver 36 spoke front/rear,
shod with Panaracer Paselas 37mm.

The frame is in good condition, but with a number of chips in the paint
(please take a look at the photos:
https://plus.google.com/100421127368153243355/posts/HptKpf6MECa).
The wheels and tires are still in great shape.

I used this as a commuter and enjoyed it a lot, but having a pbh of 89cm
and being between the old SH sizes I always felt this frame size was a bit
much for me.
I carried my workbag up front in a basket and actually liked the handling
more that way than having the load on the top rack at back. I live in the
East Bay and after oggling for a while I finally pulled the trigger on a
Box Dog Pelican. I am a one bike guy and wanted to give something else a
try.

I am asking $850. Buyer pays shipping.

Please contact me off list if interested.

Tom

I rode on a different SFR 200k with a gal from Minnesota. She complained
how hard it was to dress for a California brevet. In Minnesota it's easy,
check the temperature and put on the right clothes. In California you are
very likely to see a 40 degree swing throughout the ride.

Interesting note, I had a Brooks tan B17 13 to 15 years ago and didn't have
the patients for it to supposedly break in and sold it, then tried one
again this year on my AHH with padded underwear, comfortable but when I
took the suggestion to discard the padded underwear and just wear the
Devold or like wool underwear the Brooks amazingly was even more
comfortable.

[RBW] Re: Campy Only!: Ultramarathon Cycling's Demographic Problem

2013-10-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
A few thoughts:

Youth has no inherent aversion to endurance events, as youth is thriving in
ultrarunning events, though it is true that developing the aerobic system
requires a willingness to not go "as fast as I can" (a good general formula
being not to go over 180-age beats per minute per Phil Maffetone). One
needs to stay within that aerobic threshold for 3+ months to really develop
the aerobic system (which will benefit speed at all levels, but requires
knowledge and patience).

Sounds to me like its a difference in culture of what is seen as "extreme"
in running vs. cycling. Youth tends to like what is extreme, and there is a
lot of extreme cycling happening in MTB right now.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Campy Only!: Ultramarathon Cycling's Demographic Problem

2013-10-06 Thread Mike Schiller
I think most of the younger endurance racers are into off-road rides. The
avg. age of riders on events like the Tour Divide is in the early 30's.
Gravel racing is another area where younger riders have found their
calling. Long pavement rides just seem more monotonous compared to the
variety of terrain and challenges of dirt based endurance races. Even
though I fit in the older demographic, the dirt side of cycling is just
more fun.

Re: [RBW] Winter cycling pants

2013-10-06 Thread Patrick Moore
This remark has nothing to do with winter pants, but it does bear on knee
pain.

Ever since my high school days, when I believed that shifting to the
smaller ring to climb hills was sissy, I've had a twinge in my left knee
after just a bit of torquing a high gear up a hill while seated. (My first
complete build, circa 1971, age 15 or 16, had a 50t ring and a 15 t cog.) A
month or so ago, during an otherwise very pleasant and scenic gravel ride
with 17 miles of climbing outbound (return in less than 1 hour versus the 2
hours oubound!) my left knee complained loud and long.

It was almost instinctive to force myself to pedal by dropping my heel at
the bottom of the stroke; sure enough, I found and continue to find that
this goes a considerable way toward keeping the knee pain at bay. (As a fan
of fixed gear riding who rides in rolling terrain, I've also learned to
stand early, as soon as the slope starts to bog me down while sitting.)

This afternoon, for example, I pushed a 75" gear against a slight headwind
and up a very steep 1.3 km, and seasoned things with another 3 miles of
more gradual climbing -- always being careful to drop my left heel if I was
seated while applying heavy torque. Now, 1 1/2 hour later, when my left
knee would in the past be bothering me -- no twinge atall.

Knee covered by Nashbar Nickers at 65*F, too.

Do you climb in big gears?

I tend to place my at the backs of the slots, but I do use the muscles that
operate when you pedal with the foot forward of the arch.

Re: [RBW] Winter cycling pants

2013-10-06 Thread Patrick Moore
Standing is no problem; no knee pain no matter what the gear or slope. But
sitting and torquing is the danger.

I just don't feel comfortable with Arch Over Pedal Spindle; it feels
artificial. Note that this has nothing to do with No Retention -- I know of
one man, not much my junior, who smokes his full susp, 11 sp peers on steep
singletrack with a ss 29er and No Retention. It's arch pedaling that feels
bad, to me. Foot on pedal slightly aft of ball of foot, with heel dropped,
gives extra power and helps my left knee (my right knee is wholly
unbothered by seated, high-torque climbing).

So, perhaps we're much the same -- pedaling just behind the ball of the
foot? I find that cleats don't go far enough backward if the bolts have
wide heads (as on my Looks).

At any rate, that's what I do.

Anyway, for The Other Person, pedaling behind the ball of foot seems to
help at least two people.

[RBW] Re: Campy Only!: Ultramarathon Cycling's Demographic Problem

2013-10-06 Thread Scott G.
I talk to people new to the club riding a lot.
Number #1 reason people don't cycle is they're scared of riding on the road.
Number #2 reason, which probably applies to Ultra events is cycling takes
too
much time, people would rather run.

Getting 4 hours away is tough, when you are expected to answer work
questions
24 hours a day on your smart leash.
So cross will take over the universe, 70 minutes in the coffin and you are
done.

But sitting and torquing is the danger.

Was just reading this thread and Peter M. Dude you made me laugh Try an

funny is that it's so true! My Android phone totally runs hot. Now my
laughing at this comment does not negate the fact that people are different

David,

I rode a SH 56cm @ RivHq and it fit me really well. Unless there was a huge
difference between the center pull & Calipered SH's it seems a 60 cm would
fit you? That's a nice price and with that stable of spare parts you have...
