On Keven's, there is a bit added on to the downtube shifter cable boss that
doubles the right cable stop--to accommodate a cable stop for the fd, it
appears. Anyone know what this part is?

Also, is an Appaloosa production run in the works?

2013-09-18 Thread Perry
Jeff, that looks like the bit but I can't be sure. It probably is though. Good
eye on your part.

I'm intrigued by this Appaloosa contraption. I especially like the way Keven
has his set up on the riv site.

http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/staff3.htm

I think this is great set up--with the big saddlebag weight resting forward of
the rear hub. Next, the front rack like he's got there (with bag or basket).
For extending touring, I wonder if a frame bag would work on that bike? That
would be one great mofo rig, IMO. It's all theoretical, of course.

[RBW] Re: Whitefish Bike Retreat - MT

2013-09-18 Thread George Schick
This is good info to know about Whitefish. I have a friend who lives out
there and I've been thinking about visiting him for years now, but it would
have to be by train. The Amtrak Empire Builder takes about a day and a
half to get there from Chicago Union Station. And I'd want to take the MTB
along. A question I've had is how well the station at Whitefish services
bikes - that is, does it stop long enough for a passenger to get the bike
out of baggage (some stops in small, rural areas are very brief)? I assume
the bike needs to be boxed with at least the pedals removed and bars
turned. Does the Whitefish station facilitate this, i.e., store boxes so
you can get one when you're ready to leave again? And what about the
hours; if the train comes through there late at night the station might be
closed (unstaffed), which could mean difficulty storing the box, etc.?

I used the Brand V handlebar bag to carry rain gear and other small items
while riding RAGBRAI this year. I had to make longer straps in order to
make the bag ride level with the handlebars. The bag is stiff enough to
keep it's shape and I have never had a problem with it drooping or sagging.
I have a matching saddlebag for my Soma and I bought another for my

Re: [RBW] Re: Whitefish Bike Retreat - MT

2013-09-18 Thread Shawn Granton
George (and everyone)-

I'm no expert, but I've taken my bike on Amtrak scads of time over the past
decade. But first a good thing to check out if you are interested in taking
a bike on Amtrak is check their official page:
http://www.amtrak.com/bring-your-bicycle-onboard

And in brief: "Roll-on" bike service is only currently available on select
regional lines, like the Cascades up here in the NW. With any other line,
the bike HAS to be boxed and transported as checked baggage (where
available.) True folding bikes like Bromptons can be brought on board any
train.

On Wed, Sep 18, 2013 at 9:47 AM, George Schick wrote:

> A question I've had is how well the station at Whitefish services bikes -

It's not a question of how long a train stops at a station, it's whether or
not the station has checked baggage service. Whitefish has checked baggage,
so you can bring a boxed bike along. Most (but not all) long-distance lines
offer checked baggage. You have to make sure that your departure station
AND arrival station have checked baggage service. If you are doing Chicago
to Whitefish, you are okay. There are two ways to find out if a line has
checked baggage AND your departure and arrival stations have checked
baggage service. Either check the stations page on the Amtrak site:
http://www.amtrak.com/find-train-bus-stations
Or, if you know the train you'll take, check the timetable. The timetable
will indicate whether the train provides checked baggage service or not,
and if it does, each station that offers baggage service will be indicated
with the checked baggage "suitcase" icon. For example, here's the Empire
Builder's current schedule:
http://www.amtrak.com/ccurl/731/811/Empire-Builder-Schedule-042813.pdf

I assume the bike needs to be boxed with at least the pedals removed and
> bars turned.
>

Yep. The bike boxes provided by Amtrak are larger than bike shop bike
boxes, so this should be all you need to do. (Of course, if you have rather
large handlebars, you might have to remove them.)

> Does the Whitefish station facilitate this, i.e., store boxes so you can
> get one when you're ready to leave again?
>

As far as I know, Amtrak's official policy is they do not hold bike boxes.
Of course, each station is different, and some stations will do this if you
ask nicely and you're going to come back relatively soon. (One station even
volunteered to hold my box!) There is also the chance that the station may
have some used bike boxes lying around that you can snag for free, it
doesn't hurt to ask. (Otherwise, it's $15 for a new bike box.) Smaller
stations tend to be better with the holding boxes and giving free used
boxes.

> And what about the hours; if the train comes through there late at night
> the station might be closed (unstaffed), which could mean difficulty
> storing the box, etc.?
>

Again, check the stations page, which will list station hours for any
STAFFED station:
http://www.amtrak.com/find-train-bus-stations
Generally, the station will be open when the train comes through regardless
of what hour it comes through, as it wouldn't make sense for it to be
closed when it's most needed. If a station is unstaffed, that's going to
mean that it won't have baggage service, which means you can't bring a
boxed bike. (If a train provides roll-on service, you should be able to get
it on/off at unstaffed stations.)

yours,
Shawn

Re: [RBW] Re: New Mixte?

2013-09-18 Thread William
Remember there was that super-involved seat lug on the BLUG, which said it
was going to be on a new bike in one and only one huge size. Then Grant
had the followup that he could make multiple sizes with that lug by varying
chainstay length with each frame size. Maybe this will be that?

[RBW] Re: Brand V Boxy Bag

2013-09-18 Thread William
I use it. I ran it on the front of my Black Mountain Road bike at the San
Francisco Randonneurs Populaire last weekend. It will also be used for a
90 miler from Daly City down to Aptos on the California coast tomorrow. I
won't be riding that bike, though. I'm loaning it to a buddy and riding a
different bike.

Stable enough is in the eye of the beholder. It swings if you rock a lot
out of the saddle. I don't hate the rocking, but it does remind me that a
proper handlebar bag with a rack and a decaleur is much more stable. I
love that I can run my road bike svelte or versatile by just hanging the
boxy on there.

It droops a little but it stays level. Not sure that makes sense. The one
change I would make to improve the design would be that I would make the
floor of the bag with a slot that the corroplast floor stiffener would
slide in to. You can see that stiffener in pic #5 on the Rivsite. It is
just velcro'd down in a couple spots and that allows the floor to droop
away from the stiffener, so your chapstick or change can get under it.
With a sleeve, that would keep the floor fabric from drooping away from
the stiffener which would be a little better. If I felt really strongly
about it I would have done a DIY by now, but I haven't.

In summary I like the bag a lot, and think it is quite good for the price.
It is not a full substitute for a proper handlebar bag setup which could
easily be a $150 rack, a $250 bag, and a $100 decaleur. For less than
1/5th the price it is a tremendous value.

[RBW] Re: Friday Ride on the Columbia River

2013-09-18 Thread Lynne Fitz
Depends on how many miles you want to put in. From Troutdale out to
Multnomah Falls and back is 40+ miles.

Starting in Troutdale, if you want to ride out on the WA side and back on
the OR side, figure 85+ miles. There is still a mile of Hwy 84 shoulder
you'll have to ride; the trail is not yet open. Big shoulder, no worries.

Or you could ride out to Multnomah Falls with a side trip up Larch Mtn.

Sadly, I have a day job, and am not able to join you.

[RBW] Wasco County Country Bike Ramble v2.0... Oct 12

2013-09-18 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
The Wasco County Country Bike Ramble
(WCCBR)
earlier
this year was such a blast that we're doing an autumn version. Details are
still being worked out, but I wanted to give folks lead time to work this
is into their schedules.

Current working template is some sort of backroad connection through the
foothills from The Dalles to Dufur. OK, it's more north-central Oregon than
eastern Oregon, but we're not here to split geographical hairs. The
Deschutes River has been mentioned too. Interested parties are welcome to
chime in with route suggestions.

List member Aaron Young has recently moved to The Dalles and has invited us
over to his place after the ride for food.

Current thought is that this will be *a day ride on Saturday, October 12*,
but adding an overnight element could be an option.

I hope it goes without saying that we certainly would love to have Country
Bikesters from anywhere join us. I have room at my house in Portland if
anyone needs a place to rest while traveling to or from this ride.

Specifics on time/place to meet TBD and will be announced here.

I have been dangerously close (with all due respect to the great Sam

Re: [RBW] Re-introduction

2013-09-18 Thread Patrick Moore
You can't use Bubba; that's mine from my infant years. My baby sister, one
year younger, couldn't say "brother" so she called me "asshole" -- I mean,
"bubba". This had nothing to do with my father's southern heritage where
Bubba is considered a desirable given name by the best families ("Bubba
Fitzwilliam Makepeace Williamson IV" for example.)

My siblings still call me "Bubba", but not my brother because he finds it
embarassing.
