[RBW] New Atlantis Build

Hi,

I just finished building up my partner's new Atlantis, which we purchased 
from listserv member Pepe.  We took it out for a test ride and had an 
unfortunate encounter with chain suck.  The first scratch of many, I 
suppose.  

We picked a mix of components to make the bike flexible enough to tour, 
keep up (mostly) during shorter road/group rides, and most importantly, to 
carry my trout-fishing obsessed partner to the harder to reach blue line 
fishing streams where the native brookies tend to hide.The build list

Racks, fenders, and a few other small items to be added when we find the 
pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, which, if there is any bike can get 
us there, this is the one!

[RBW] Interesting Bike at the CA State Fair

An interesting tidbit from the California state fair--tucked in amongst the 
livestock and deep-fried snacks was an exhibit on recreation opportunities in 
the Golden State that included this unusual bike, a classic Raphael Geminiani. 
Not at all the kind of bike one expects to see in a fair!

[RBW] My first RAGBRAI, my first Rivendell

RAGBRAI is an organized mass ride across Iowa (http://ragbrai.com/).  I
participated in the last 3 days (out of 7) for my first time.  The weather
was glorious (70s and sunny) which is uncharacteristic for the last week in
July; last year's RAGBRAI was high 90s.  I rode 52, 52, and 63 miles, with
lots of stops for snacks and streching.  The route winds through small
towns, and the locals come out in droves to greet the riders ("where ya
from?") and profit off the event by selling food, beer, and trinkets.  It's
a very social atmosphere, not a race or serious ride.

RAGBRAI has a very broad mix of riders, from grannies on recumbents or town
bikes, to the carbon race wannabes, and everything in between.  I saw lots
of tandems, including a cobbled together tandem recumbent dressed as a
banana boat, with banana-suited riders.  I saw lots of "square" people
getting wasted and having a good time, and lots of families enjoying the
ride calmly.

I took it pretty easy and didn't party that much.  I rode with my
girlfriend and her dad, but I made connections with Team Pez and plan to
ride with them next year.

I rode my '97 Rivendell Road that I picked up off craigslist this spring.
 It's a wonderful bike, and it served me very well.  I changed out a lot of
parts right before RAGBRAI, and--thankfully--it performed perfectly.
 Thanks to all the list members who helped me find excellent components at
reasonable prices, and thanks to all those who suggested a 650b conversion
for this bike.  It was a great success!

The 650b Lierre tires were awesome (nice hum) and very comfortable.  I
didn't notice any drop off in my speed with the fatter, slightly smaller
tires.  The moustache bars were great; I had much less hand pain/numbness
than I did with drop bars.

a pair of beautiful randonneur customs, a navy/white Bob Jackson and a
white/blue Steve Rex (fillet brazed with internal dynamo wiring and
matching painted fenders),
a blue/orange fade True North, ridden by a friendly, tubby randonneur from
Canada (who did the P-B-P on it in 2011)
a couple chrome lugged Colnago's,
and about a dozen Waterfords, and an old Bob Griffin.  As a bike nerd, it
was nice to see so many beautiful steel frames getting ridden.

green Redwood, and a steel blue Long Low.  I thought I'd see more Atlantii,
but maybe that ultra touring crowd was ahead of me all day.  I was dawdling
a bit with my gf and her dad, who was riding a crappy Trek hybrid.

[RBW] Re: Routes from Portland, OR to Seattle, WA

Traffic is pretty light mostly.  The stretch from Vernonia out to Astoria 
is really, really pretty.  You can make it even better by taking Young's 
River Road.  We didn't on the fleche, because it would have needed a 
control, and there's really nothing there but gorgeous scenery.

Motorcyclists like the road; expect to see them, but they are generally 
quite courteous.

Yes.  It was Bob Bailey riding his Long Low with prosthetics on both legs. 
 I saw him almost every day and he rode well, though he did struggle a 
little on the hills.  Apparently we use our lower leg a lot more than we

[RBW] Did you ride a Bleriot in Ellicott City today?

Saw a guy on a bike that looked exactly the color of a Bleriot and he had a 
Rando bag and looked like drops.
This is highly unusual to see in my area (Rando Bag) on an Aqua colored 
bike).
Was it you?

[RBW] Unknown Coast Weekend Ride, September 14-15

weekend at the Cal Riv Rumble, and I just signed myself up. I'm hoping to 
get the new Rambouillet built by then.

Was pretty sure they were the Thin Gripsters.  Although could be wrong.  I
noticed it because it was different from either of my two pair.  They
weren't close into the pedal like the Vice.

Again, it could easily be faulty memory on my part.

[RBW] On Loss and Love

I am terribly past due, but I still need to write this.  Several weeks ago, 
Erin came into the living room and asked me some mundane question.  I 
didn’t respond; when she looked at me, she saw tears streaming down my face 
as I stared at my laptop.  With urgency and tenderness, she asked what was 
wrong.  Crying quietly, I stammered out as best as I could, “It’s ... one 
of my Riv Pals…he died.”  I couldn’t get out much more in the moment about 
Seth, but I read all of the posts.  Others have been eloquent, and I will 
simply offer my heart and deep sympathy to Seth’s family and friends on or 
off this list.  

 

Here is what I want to say, though, to all of us here–lurkers and posters 
alike:  My tears let me know that, dang it all, I have come to love our 
curious little Riv family.  How the heck does that happen with a silly old 
listserv?  

 

So thanks for being a part of my life, each and every one of you.  Dang it.

I was totally, madly in love with these pedals until... the damned bearings 
started "clicking" on both pedals 6 months into having them. Is there an 
easy fix for this problem with sealed cartridge bearings, like dropping 
Phil oil into them or something? I bet it was caused by the manufacturer 
saving $.002 per pair on lubricant, GAHHH!!!

[RBW] Custom Paint: Army Green or Tuxedo Black?

Hi Friends,

I anticipate getting closer to the delivery of Appaloosa custom and was all 
set on a good WWII type Khaki green, and THEN just as Grant predicted I've 
been wavering.  I am now considering a black frame  --either way with of 
course a cream headtube.  So I'm throwing out some chum to see what all 
y'all think:  black or army green?  Please feel free to post links to your 
beautiful black or army green bike.

The mechanic at my LBS used a grease gun to pump grease through the pedal.
Both of my pair needed it.

have a 1" soft Chinese brush that works pretty well, except it loses hairs.

Every black Rivendell I have seen looks fantastic. Black and cream with 
leather accouterment is one of the classiest combos. I was seriously 
considering black for the AR, but already had one black bike in the stable. 

Pretty rare to see them in black too...might be fitting for an equally rare 
model such as the Appaloosa.

I don't know. I do some bike painting on the side and black always reminds
me of a job I could do myself. When I pay for a paintjob (or was given one)
I would go for something I couldn't readily do myself or find locally. It
would be amazing to see a flat army green paint job. I don't know if I have
seen a flat Rivendell ever.  Also having had a black car and black bikes
they show every scratch, every speck of dust and dirt and I am pretty lazy,
haha.

My Bombadil I bought from someone was originally flat black, I hated it 
beyond measure .  Nothing special about it at all, like flat black from a 
spray can !!  

Go for some Color ! Khaki Green would be cool, and at least a semi gloss, 
flat just looks cheap.

I love army green. I love love love black Rivendells. What about black with 
3/4 green forks and stays? Double cream piping around where the colors 
meet. Think of the green as chrome. Shiny paint.

Neither Black nor Army green are in my short list of wants.  If you already 
told Grant way back when Army green and Grant already predicted that you 
would have second-thoughts, then there is always the option of complete 
surrender and let Grant choose.  His choices seem to have that strange 
ability to grow on you.  

Anyway, black seems like such a cop-out, but I admit it that black bikes 
can look unbelievably sharp, sometimes.  There was a pdf flyer that Riv 
published of a black Roadeo that was a stunner.  Tuxedo Yves also is a 
really classy laddie.  I had an 80's Miyata (that I just shipped to its new 
owner) that is black with a Silver headtube and I think that is a very 
smart look, too.  

I confess that army green doesn't thrill me either.  Appaloosa keeps me 
thinking of horses, and there are some really nice translucentish browns 
that horses can affect.  A coppery, horsey brown with a cream headtube and 
some tastefully selected leather bits to butch it up might be fun.

[RBW] Colorado Autumn S24O

Timing: Generally the weekend closest to Sept. 22 is the best for aspen colors, 
but 1 week on either side still catches a lot. So Sept. 21-22 is ideal for 
aspen colors, and I have something already scheduled the weekend before that, 
leaving Sept. 28-29 as the second option. Preferences?

Camping: I greatly prefer camping in National Forest and foregoing a 
campground. Is that fine?

Location: I like Kip's suggestion of Kenosha Pass as a fairly central meeting 
point. There are several great options we have.

1) Starting from Kenosha Pass itself, there is some great single track on the 
Colorado Trail up toward Georgia Pass (section 5 of the CT), with camping in 
some aspen various places before it gets too steep. Stop, set up camp, then day 
ride the pass and go from there?

2) Boreas Pass out of Como is a ride I've wanted to do, and there looks to be
great camping up a ways along Tarryall Creek, with some loop options via
Gold Dust Trail and other roads in the area. It appears (from my Trails
Illustrated map) that no ATV's are allowed in that area on Boreas Pass or
Gold Dust Trail. Folks could also ride to Breckenridge and back if desired.

So, hearing back on your choice of date and ride/camp as well as if you would 
be able to go with fragrance free soap/shampoo/laundry detergent, etc for a 
week or two prior so I could come would be wonderful (I know that's a BIG ask).

Be prepared for Colorado's range of Autumn weather: Sunny and 70 - snowy and 
20, and everything in-between -- possibly all within an hour or two. The gear 
ain't all fitting in a front basket for this one if you're prepared. Grin.

Och! I meant to add that most likely my family (wife and 4 kids from age 8 
mo. - 12 years) would be driving me there (it's that or I make a 3-4 day 
tour of it and bike myself there, unless someone from the Springs is going, 
has a scent free car and room for a mammoth and bags. Grin.). So, an option 
is to have a family/car accessible camp site or a site that is a short 
bikepack/hike in, as a base camp (Sect. 5 of the CT in the N. end of South 
Park has some great options for this), then ride from there. So families 
could come, spend time together, and those who want to ride on can.

I think a glossy black frame with a cream headtube, honey Brooks, and 
shellacked cork grips would look fantastic. Then again, I just put the 
finishing touches on a green Hunqapillar over the weekend, and that looks 
great too. I don't think you can go wrong either way, but there is an 
undeniably timeless, classy quality to black. The long, low-slung 
appearance of the Appaloosa is reminiscent to me of the classic Jaguar E 
type, which looks stunning in black but I can't even imagine in olive 
drab...

Just did this area last week. However, we skipped the steep stuff. Started
on the south end of the avenue of the giants and went to Ferndale. Camped
in Humbolt Redwoods State Park the first night and stayed in a hotel in
Ferndale. Great views and wonderful weather.

I've just been planning out a tour that would include both the Unknown
Coast and the dirt part just south of it known as the Lost Coast.  The
Unknown Coast has some extremely steep sections (well over 20% for
longish sections) and the Lost Coast has steeper sections and, as I
mentioned, is not paved. I have ridden the Unknown Coast in both
directions, touring, without having to walk, but I expect substantial
hiking when I get to the dirt. It'll be great!

A friend and I rode south on the coast a few years ago. We did the
Unknown Coast, and both of us really want to go back and tackle the
Lost Coast too. Because it's there and we didn't do it, and also
because it skirts around some bothersome traffic.

I usually tour on Pasela 1.5s, but the Schwalbe Marathon 2.0s will
grace the Atlantis for this trip.

I've got a Surly Ogre in "Shrek" (i.e. Army) Green and a Long Haul Trucker
in black. Both colors are great. I like the green of the Ogre better, for
what it's worth. But that's not to say you would.

This is the easiest route to Shell Ridge from WC BART. Just take Ygnacio 
Valley Rd to La Casa Via, turn right and follow it to the dirt. YV Rd is 
very busy, and I'd suggest riding the sidewalk unless you have a big enough 
group to take the lane. I'll figure out a way to show you some likely camp 
sites later, but basically ride out there and look for a high place off the 
trail with a view. If you want a legal campground, you have to go higher on 
Mt Diablo.

What Evan said (green + black). Of the two, the green sounds better,
although I love black w/ cream. Black w/ just a touch of metallic is
my absolute favorite. But yeah, I think green is better.

Silly me. Bob seems  to be a very strong rider. 

I had a great RAGBRAI and it was great setting folks. 

Getting home is turning into a problem though...Flossie is hitting Hawaii and 
I'm stuck overnight in LA. Going tomorrow through SFO, Kona, and finally 
Honolulu. Wish I was in the Bay Area now instead of Inglewood. :-)

Mike, You can contact Riv or VP, either one will likely take care of you 
pretty quickly.  I have had one pedal display that during the honeymoon 
period with mine.  I talked a bit with VP and it apparently happens, but 
infrequently, and when it did they made it right.  I had a new set at my 
door pretty quickly.  Grease may help, they are easy to pull apart an 
inspect.  If there is nothing obvious, and they keep clicking contact Riv
