Re: [RBW] Re: scouting East Canyon

2013-07-14 Thread Evan Spacht
I'm in total agreement; it's more of a hiking trail but fun, nonetheless.
I personally find the trail a bit too steep and rocky for an enjoyable
descent.
Keep me posted on fall destinations and count me in.

[RBW] Rivendell sittings yesterday, Markleeville Death Ride - was it you?

2013-07-14 Thread reynoldslugs
Did this challenging ride yesterday (www.deathride.com) for the seventh time.
Quite beautiful, but less than 5% of the riders were on steel. I chose my
Orange Rambouillet for the day.

I was taking a break on the Ebbets Pass ascent when a nice guy on a tall
Rivendell road passed me - his bike was a very nice deep green. Would love to
know more about the bike and the paintunfortunately did not have time to
talk,

Was it you?

Also got passed by a strong rider on a white Roadeo, I think right before the
Carson Pass climb. Who could that be?

Anyway, send a note if you were out on the DR yesterday.

Best,

Max Beach

Re: [RBW] Rivendell sittings yesterday, Markleeville Death Ride - was it you?

2013-07-14 Thread Addison Wilhite
I was out there. On my blue/white Gunnar Sport. It's been 11 years since
I did the DR. I was struck at just how many fewer steel bikes out there
since then. I love bikes, even stealthy carbon pro racing machines, but I
kept wondering if there was basically one factory in Taiwan with a cookie
cutter carbon machine, and a separate room where workers paint the same
frame "Fuji, Specialized, Argon, Wilier, etc. etc." I know that's not
fair. 30 years ago you could probably say the same basic thing about a
steel bike. To the less discerning eye they probably all look the same
without the paint.

Anyway, a really nice day for a ride. It's hard to describe for those not
used to that type of unrelenting gradients how intense the ride can be.
That east side of monitor is breathtaking. The descent and the ascent.
I'd ridden Ebbett's a few days earlier just to remind and test myself as
far as fitness.

Cheers,

[RBW] shipping a bike to Karme Choling

2013-07-14 Thread bo richardson
My main bicycling buddy Anne is off to the Buddhist Center in
St Johnsbury Vt for two years. She flies in for August and then drives
from Washington State at the end of September.

Anne comes into Hanover NH by bus and then gets picked up by car.

We were thinking of packing and shipping her
Miyata 1000 before she flies so she would have it
for August and beyond.

The bike shops in the area get stunningly bad reviews.
Peter White is two hours away and two hours back.

It wont kill Anne to do without her bike for August
but if there is a solution it would be nice for her to have.

Does anyone on the list have local knowledge which would
solve Anne's problem?

Even knowing there isnt a solution would help.

RE: [RBW] shipping a bike to Karme Choling

2013-07-14 Thread Joe Bartoe
Hi Bo,

I have used the Air Caddy system to ship bikes with very good results. The bike
is put into the box, attached to a fork mount. All you have to do at the back
end is reattach the front wheel, rotate the handlebars into position, and
re-insert the seatpost and tighten it down. I've shipped 3 bikes this way now
with no issues. You can buy the Air Caddy and even get good pricing on shipping
through this site:

Hope that helps,

[RBW] shipping a bike to Karme Choling

2013-07-14 Thread Jay B
+2 for the Air Caddy. I've flown with the Quickbeam several times and shipped a
Betty Foy once. It's a well thought out and easy system, but keep in mind front
fenders and front racks might require additional attention in order to fit.
also, with all the extra room in the box it's really easy to toss in your bags
and helmets and locks and such and quickly blow past the 50 pound weight limit.
the 58cm Betty with fenders and tail light maxed out the length of the box, as
well. for a cardboard box, ours have proven really durable and I expect to get
many more uses/trips out of them.

Re: [RBW] Rivendell sittings yesterday, Markleeville Death Ride - was it you?

2013-07-14 Thread reynoldslugs

Jim and Addison -

I did see one fellow on a really nice looking Gunnar, perhaps it was you -
- it was a relatively new Gunnar, I think it was white with the new style
of decal. I might be wrong about the color (I was pretty popped when I saw
it), I just remember thinking it was a very classy looking bike.

As for ice cream and Carson Pass, sometimes it's just the thought of the
ice cream (traditionally given out at the top of the pass) that keeps me
going.

I only did two passes this year - - I spent the last two weeks before the
ride in Berlin and Munich eating German food and drinking German beer (Zero
riding), and got off a 13 hour transatlantic flight exactly 36 hours before
the ride. Not what anyone would call smart training - - so I stuck with
the front side of Monitor and the front side of Ebbets, for about 6k' over
50 miles. I'll do better next year.

The ride, even a short version, is an epic, magnificent day. The locals
turn out in droves and cheer the riders - - literally the full population
of Markleeville sits on the court house lawn and cheers the riders.

Still looking for the owner of that pretty Rivendell road that passed me
ascending Ebbets. Very nice deep emerald green.

[RBW] Re: Tuning up indexing, a little OT

2013-07-14 Thread Jeremy Till
Yes, others are right in that cable tension is key with indexing,
especially as the number of rear cogs increase. Barrel adjusters are your
friend. From your description, i would say that you probably have just
slightly too much tension--maybe a 1/2 or 3/4 turn of the barrel adjuster
in might help.

I usually setup indexing by adjust limit screws first, then set the cable
anchor, just barely taking up all cable slack in the smallest cog. Then i
shift into the second to smallest cog--just one jump--and check to make
sure that that derailleur pulleys are centered under that cog. If not, i
use the barrel adjuster to fine tune it's position. Then I shift up into
the higher parts of the cassette and double check. As long as the
derailleur is staying centered in each gear you should be getting even
shifts up and down.

If the derailleur is centering well, especially on the way up, but hanging
up going down, another culprit might be friction in the cable housing,
which I imagine might be a problem with the long cable runs on a tandem.
The shifter is shifting but friction in the system is holding the cable
against the spring in the derailleur. If that's the case, try lubricating
the cable housing and any cable guides with a thin lubricant like TriFlow.

Finally, if you're getting even shifting in one part of the cassette but
not in another, your derailleur hanger might be slightly bent. Any good
LBS should have the Park hanger alignment gauge, which checks to make sure
that hanger threads are perpendicular to the plane of the wheel (and thus
the cogs). With most frames, especially steel ones, you can also use the
gauge to slightly cold-set the hanger into proper alignment, although if
it's a badly bent replaceable aluminum hanger cold-setting in back might
crack it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tuning up indexing, a little OT

2013-07-14 Thread Steve Palincsar
Actually, there isn't any more cable housing as such on a tandem than there is
on a single; most of the cable run is out in the open. One area that used to
create a lot of trouble for indexing, especially for converting the older
friction tandems to indexing, was the routing of the cable under the captain's
bottom bracket. Many of the bikes had the cable run through holes drilled in a
flange beneath the bottom bracket shell, which was split to allow eccentric
motion to take up timing chain tension. It worked fine for friction shifting,
but provided too much cable friction for indexing. However it took a few years
to figure it out, leading to much frustration in the meantime.

shifting but friction in the system is holding the cable against the spring in
the derailleur. If that's the case, try lubricating the cable housing and any
cable guides with a thin lubricant like TriFlow.

Finally, if you're getting even shifting in one part of the cassette but not in
another, your derailleur hanger might be slightly bent. Any good LBS should
have the Park hanger alignment gauge, which checks to make sure that hanger
threads are perpendicular to the plane of the wheel (and thus the cogs). With
most frames, especially steel ones, you can also use the gauge to slightly
cold-set the hanger into proper alignment, although if it's a badly bent
replaceable aluminum hanger cold-setting in back might crack it.

of you who works with this stuff regularly can offer some guidance.

The rear shifting worked quite well but it took me 2 1/2 years to get the front
end shifting predictably (for those of you who have never ridden a tandem,
front end shifting is a very different animal). While fixing the front end,
which now works perfectly, I replaced the much too big Deore XT RD with an
Ultegra 6700 GS, and can't seem to get it to work quite right. The limit screws
are good, as is the B screw, and the cable tension feels quite high. The
indexed shifter lifts the chain fine from the outside all the way up to the
inside (28) cog; but when I start down it will hang up between the 1 & 2
position, then jump two cogs on the next click; it then hangs between 7 & 6,
and jumps 2 cogs to 5. After that it is OK, except for that indexing hesitation
which I hate. The chain (wipperman 908) has just a few hundred miles on it and
the cassette (11-28 HG) is new.

Right now, I have reverted to friction which seems to be working fine, but
would like to get the dang index to behave!

You can find great ice cream after coming off of Ebbets prior to climbing
Carson. Knowing this I'm no longer tempted to shoot for the five passes.
The draw is just too strong.

These days the most climbing I'm doing is up Monetbello road to Black Mtn in
the Santa Cruz montains. I know the way to Peets when I come down from there.

I met Jim in Hannibal, MO this morning and bought his Atlantis. The frame

get back from RAGBRAI; there is a little devil on my shoulder telling me to
pull the necessary parts off of my other bikes and riding the Riv instead

2013-07-14 Thread Addison Wilhite
I posted a few photos of the ride. I noticed after loading them off my
phone that all but one were from the monitor climbs. That probably says
more about my status on the DR at that point than anything else. I think
the last one in this selection is from Ebbett's. I did take a few photos
last Wednesday when I did a trial run up Ebbett's which capture the beauty
better (although none of the photos will do it justice). I'm kind of
convinced that I won't be doing Carson (the final pass) anymore as much
because that is the one pass that they don't close down from auto traffic.
It just isn't very pleasant and not quite as pretty as the others.

[RBW] FT: Nitto Dynamic Stem for a Technomic

2013-07-14 Thread Johnny Alien
I have a brand new Dynamic stem. I purchased it thinking I didn't need a
really long stem but it turns out that I probably need a little more
height. This was only inserted into the headtube once so there are no
marks and it is as new. I would like to trade it for a longer Nitto like
the Technomic or similar. Preferably the stem would be in nice shape as
well. If you don't need a super long stem than this one is beautiful and
will save you a few precious ounces. :)

Here is the one I have.

Hey y'all, I'm having a long overdue garage sale for some of my underused

open to offers. Most of the items listed here have a picture or two in this
photo album . I may add a few more things to this
listing and I'll try to post pictures for everything.

All items will have an at-cost shipping fee added. Please contact me
off-list if your're interested, thanks!

2011 Tweed Big Loafer: Used regularly for about a year and has some
beausage on the leather and scotchlite, but in pretty nice shape still. $90

2011 Tweed Keven's Bag: Same deal, beausage on the leather and overall in
good used condition. $70

Late 2012 Swift Industries "Little Dear" w/ tweed flap: Nice smallish
saddle bag, with waxed cotton fabric and recycled tweed flap. Vinyl lining
and very waterproof, capacity is about 400 cubic inches, I think. Only
flaws are staining on the bottom from rubbing against my rack, and some
stains inside. $45

2010 Tan Canvas Big Loafer: In pretty good shape, though it has a small
hole on one side, and only one of the zippers works (but it works
perfectly). $30

Brand V Handlebar Bag: Only briefly used, with only issue being a stain and
two small holes on underside from rubbing a rack. Zippers work great. $25

2012 Nitto R-14 Top Rack: Some minor scratches here and there, but in very
good condition. Stays are in original uncut condition. $90

Paul Flatbed Rack w/ stem clamp extension: Bought in 2012 and used for
about 3 months. Has some scratches on front corners of tubing. Includes
stem clamp extension kit, which fit my 64cm Sam Hillborne perfectly. $120

Cateye Strada Wireless Cycling Computer: Brand new and in the box 2013
model. $40

Bruce Gordon "Bullet" LED Taillight in black: Bought in 2012 and never even
used it it! Mounts into an eyelet and has steady and flash modes operated
by pressing LED. $30

MKS Gripking Pedals: One brand new pair for $40 and two used pairs with
scratches and whatnot for $20/ea.

Paul Components "Canti-Combo": One pair of Neo-Retro brakes (front) and one
pair of the Touring model, both in silver anodized. $75 for the set.

Tektro CR-720 Brakes: Came with my Quickbeam and used amply, but still in
good shape. $25.

Shimano Tiagra Levers: Also came with my Quickbeam and still in decent
shape. $25

Tektro R-538 Extra Long Reach Brakes: Bought for a Resurrectio project from
Velo Orange and used briefly. Also, filed away a small amount of material
on underside of the front brake because a tire wouldn't clear, but didn't
do any serious damage. Hardware has some rust, otherwise pretty good
condition. $35 for the set.

[RBW] FS: 3 short sleeve wool shirts

2013-07-14 Thread Vic
For some reason I have been hoarding wool shirts over the last couple of
years. It may have something to do with having absolutely fallen in love
with the stuff. Weird thing is, because it doesn't need to be washed very
often, I actually don't need that much. I decided to sell off a few, and I
wanted to give ROB a shot before eBay. I took the pictures kind of crumply
in a fit of art-y-ness to replicate some of the riv pics, but now I regret
it.

The first is a blue short sleeve from RBW. Its one of the New Zealand ones
and very similar to the one they're selling now. I would say its like the
steel blue, but it has a back pocket and drop tail like the cobalt ones.
It is a slightly heavier fabric. I would say closer to a 200 than a 150,
but not quite a 260. Its in perfect shape, used 2-3 times I think. Listed
as a size large, but I wear a M and its a perfect fit. I would say its
good for a chest size of 40-ish.

Blue - $25 plus shipping
http://db.tt/pp3QpxsH
http://db.tt/pEMhzEe6

The "Salmon" one is also from RBW, from the Merino Skins vendor. SOme of
you may remember they had a sale a while back because they ordered red but
it came out closer to salmon. I'm attaching picks, but its less pink in
real life than in the pics. To me it looks like the "coral" color that
everyone is wearing these days, maybe a little less orange. Take that with
a grain of salt, I am notoriously bad at describing color. This one is
larger than the blue. Wearable by someone who wears a medium, but i would
say its closer to what generally gets sold as a large now. Maybe a chest
of 42-44-ish? Its a 150 weight, which is really light and perfect for hot
weather. Full disclosure, this one has 4 of the tiny little holes that
wool can sometimes get. It has no logo, pocket, raglan sleeves, or any
other funny business. Because of the holes and the slightly odd color
(maybe you'll love it?) this one is cheaper. Great intro to wool if you
never wanted to spend the money.

Salmon - $15
http://db.tt/2YRCwjPK

The grey one is actually from a brand called Wickers. Its 50% Merino and
50% Viscose. That latter one sounds synthetic, but if you've ever talked
to Grant about it, you'll know its not. Viscose comes from beech wood and
its super soft. This one seems to have all of the benefits of wool. To be
honest, I can't tell the difference. Its never smelled on me, but YMMV.
Its a light weight, like a 150, and great for hot weather. No pockets,
raglan, logos or funny business. Its roomier and boxier than the blue one,
more like the Salmon one, but a little shorter. Would fit a "medium"
person well and if you're a little stockier by "medium" height, it'll be
perfect. No blemishes, but its not 100% wool, so its also on the cheaper
side.

Grey - $15

Private message or email me or whatever if you're interested. If you're a
few dollars off, make an offer. I'm opened minded. I'll be sensitive to
shipping requests (i.e. fast or cheap, whatever you prefer).

[RBW] FS Newish Medium Sackville Saddlesack(Olive)

2013-07-14 Thread David Hwang
Hey RBW'ers I have a newish-never-really-used-except-once Medium Sackville
Saddlesack in olive for sale. I purchased this sack last September and
tried it out once on my daily commute and found it was too much sack for
me...I often lock up on a daily basis in SF and know it would eventually
get stolen.

I have since opted for a rear basket and it's perfect for my daily use. The
sack has been sadly sitting in my kitchen acting as an extra-parts storage
box. It's a great bag that can hold a ton of stuff (I was able to stuff a
sleeping bag and a thermarest pad into it with ease) with great
build/material quality.

Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dhwang217/sets/72157634638306293/

Asking price is $150 plus shipping, payments accepted through paypal.
Contact me at dhwang217 at gmail

Thanks!
David

[RBW] Betty Foy Picnic Bike

2013-07-14 Thread blakcloud
I finally picked up the Betty Foy frame and brought it back to Toronto and
built it up for my wife. I quickly put it together for the maiden voyage
but it does need a few more items and of course tweaked.

My wife doesn't care about bikes at all. She keeps a mama-chari in Japan
for transportation and rides a Trek hybrid with me on the weekends.
Typically we ride along the bike trails and have picnics. Last year I
bought us Bromptons thinking this was all we needed for the weekend rides
but the Bromptons are really horrible riding bikes and so that was an
experiment that went wrong. This year I decided to build what I call our
picnic bikes. My attempt at converting a bike I had to a picnic bike was
not successful, long story of why but not RBW Owners Bunch material. For
her I wanted to get a step through frame and the Betty Foy was the way to
go.

The maiden voyage was a success. She loves the bike. From the look of the
frame, the Albatross bars and the Hetre tires were all commented on.

[RBW] Re: Tuning up indexing, a little OT

2013-07-14 Thread Bill Lucas
Michael,

I just fixed the shifting issues with my BMC Monster Cross, which is a 3 x
9. The chain was cut for another bike and was 2 links ( 1 pair) too short
per the instructions from Shimano. The shifting worked, but you had to
fuss with the smaller cassette cogs. It was better on the road than the
stand. I installed a new chain of the same model (KMC 9.99) with 2 more
links and shifting is dialed in. The change is very noticeable. So check
the chain length per the instructions for your model of derailleur.

Regards,
Bill Lucas

[RBW] Does your upstroke knee break the plane of your Alba bar ends?

2013-07-14 Thread Michael
On the upstroke, does your knee break the plane of your Alba bar ends? Like
a line drawn from one bar end to another.

Just curious to see how roomy everyone's Alba set up is.

My knees break the plane. I feel I have plenty of room though and I
wouldn't want to get the bars any further away.

I have the bars high enough that they are above my legs, unless I do a
really slow circle turn, then the ends tend to run into my thighs. But no
biggie. I really like sitting upright and seeing the sky when I ride.
Pretty sights.

I would love to get my wife a Betty but she doesn't want one. I keep
