[RBW] Re: The Roadeo is different from the Ram/AHH (long post)

2013-02-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have never found a difference in turning to be particularly important.
As long as the bike behaves predictably, I, and most experienced riders,
will quickly adapt. I find slow vs high speed stability to be more
significant. I loved commuting on my Ebisu All Purpose with 38c tires
because it has phenomenal slow speed stability. My commute ended with a
mile plus of 10% + climb on a narrow, busy urban street. The Ebisu would
easily go straight up as buses and trucks went by me. Thank you, thank you!
And I could effortlessly roll ever so slowly up to a light, no gymnastics
required. That trait is much better than the Ram with 28mm tires. But at
hi speed coming down a mountain the Ram offers stability and exhilaration
that the Ebisu just can't match.

[RBW] Homer's Back!

2013-02-03 Thread Pondero

Just wanted to celebrate the return of A. Homer Hilsen to rural north
Texas. It's not the same one I foolishly sold several months ago, but same
frame, same size...in a different color. Yesterday's delightful winter
weather was a perfect opportunity for the first real ride. I spent the
morning rambling around one of my favorite loops. Since I've already owned
an AHH, I knew what to expect. But after about a year without, the
homecoming was even better than I imagined. Let the S24O routine resume...

Welcome back Home(er)!

Maybe about a year or so ago I went a few months without riding my Homer
and briefly thought about selling it. I'm glad I didn't act on those
thoughts. I've had mine now like 4.5yrs and love it. I wish it did better
with a load on it but it's still a great bike.

Are you gonna try and get stickers for the DT and ST?

[RBW] Fs: All new rear heavy duty tour kit and slightly used Supernova Airstream Chicago Pick up only

2013-02-03 Thread Matthew J
For sale dirt cheap a brand new rear Nitto Big Rack, two new Swift Industries
Stack Panniers in brown wax canvas, and a very good condition Supernova
Airstream. Selling as a lot for $200.00 total.

Not interested in parting out. If you do not want everything, the price you
pay is so low you can sell off the unwanted pieces if you are so inclined. I
am not. The only reasonI am asking for $200.00 is to weed out the eccentrics.
My hope is whoever buys it uses them all on a Bombadil, Hilsen or Atlantis.

Not interested in shipping either. Sorry. I don't have a box and do not feel
like looking for one. I am located near the Kennedy expressway. Out of
towners maybe can get a local friend to swing by.

Pick up either this coming Wednesday, Friday, or next weekend.

[RBW] Re: 2 Top Tube Observations

2013-02-03 Thread John Philip
I have both a 68 Atlantis and a 64 dtt Bombadil. I'm 6'5" 238#. I've
ridden both bikes with the same loads, same bags, same racks and in the
case of this large frame it's very clear the Bombadil handles the load much
better. On the Atlantis I can feel the head tube twisting and the frame
springing when moving the bar back and fourth with a front load. Much less
with the Bombadil. The Bombadil is much steadier climbing loaded and has
no shimmy on fast descents loaded or not. If I don't end up selling the
Atlantis to Kelly :) I may just have a second top true added. I guess I'm
a 10% er :)

[RBW] Re: 2 Top Tube Observations

2013-02-03 Thread hangtownmatt
Last January my wife and I happened to be in Berkeley and stopped by
Rivendell to take a look at the Betty Foy. I wasn't interested in a new
bike, but needed something so I could go on a test ride with her. At the
time I wouldn't even look at anything with 2TT's, so they set me up with a
1TT 65cm Hilsen; hard to believe now there ever was such a thing. We did
not have much time that day and left without a purchase. The following
March we had another opportunity and set up an appointment for an extended
test ride. I was right up front with Rivendell and told them that I,
personally, wasn't in the market, but wanted the opportunity to test ride
something; anything; their choice. When we arrived I was given a 60cm
green 2TT Sam Hillborne. We took off for an extensive 4 hour test ride.
I had never felt more comfortable on a bike. The handling was superb. I
felt as though I could do anything and/or ride anywhere on that bike. To
make a long story short we came home with Betty and Sam Hillborne frames
that day. I wasn't influenced by looks, price, the RMW Owners Bunch, 2TT's
or anything else. I simply liked the fit and ride. Since than I've put
almost 4,000 miles on the bike and have only ridden my former favorite
once. I've also grown to appreciate the novelty of the 2TT. Not sure what
it adds or detracts from, but I'm happy with the ride handling
characteristics and it is kinda clool having something a little different.

[RBW] FS: Shimano Bar-End Shifters, NEW

2013-02-03 Thread David Hallerman

Hi,

I have three sets of Shimano bar-end shifters for sale. All are new,
never installed, perfect condition. All prices include free Priority
Mail shipping.

All are Ultegra level, which means they'll index with any 8-speed or
7-speed Shimano set-up, respectively, road or mountain, but won't work
with those speeds of Dura-Ace.

They'll also work well as friction shifters with any rear derailleur
(the front is friction in all setups).

Here's what's what of the three I have to sell:

 * 8-speed, with cables and housing = $75
 * 8-speed, with cables but no housing = $70
 * 7-speed, with cables but no housing = $90

Let me know if you have any questions.

Smiles,

Dave

[RBW] FS: Brooks saddles, B17 Standard and Ladies B17S, both honey color

2013-02-03 Thread Doug Way

Hi Rivsters-

We have a couple of extra Brooks saddles that we have for sale. Both are
very lightly used, probably less than 300 miles. Both have been
Proofhided on the top and underside. Pictures can be seen on my Flickr
page:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25652527@N05/8442973602/in/photostream

We're asking $70 for each saddle including shipping to the lower 48 by
USPS Priority Mail. We'd prefer payment by Paypal just because it's
easier.

[RBW] Finding balance.

2013-02-03 Thread Manuel Acosta
The stresses of work and having enough time just to do things for yourself
can be daunting, if not impossible at times. Nothing a quick overnight
bike camping trip to remind you the importance of the basic things in life
and to bring you back to earth. Tried to plan a quick and imprompt
overnighter with some of the Rivendell crew. Due to school and sickness
only Dustin could make it. Never the less it was a blast. Great refresher
from a week worth of work and stress. Dustin told me about the story on how
he ended up to be the ginny pig for Mark's new Hub rack shin-dig. He was at
the shop for an overnighter trip when low and behold his bike is gone.
Apparently Grant, Brian or Mark were wondering if Dustin's bike would fit
the hub rack, so they took his bike in and fitted the rack on Dustin's
bike. Before Dustin could object he was trying the new hub rack. Rack looks
great without bags and seems like a great fit with the other Mark rack
trifecta. We both talked about what would be in store for the new bags. We
both jokingly figured that whatever bag Grant designs it would have some
quirky design. I said that maybe with the new bags you would have to clap
twice to open them or something. All in good fun.

Pictures proved that sometimes a good sleep outside is all you need to
recharge the batteries:

[RBW] Re: Considering selling: my 59 Bleriot frame/fork

2013-02-03 Thread justinaugust
I sold my Bleriot for much less than that. But I also had a better fitting
Saluki en route. I think value when selling a used frame is a negotiation
between the seller and buyer. For example: I (non-obsessively) collect vinyl. I
have a 12 7" set from a band that I value very little. I would love to trade
this for a similar set of an artist I adore. The set I have is "worth" 5x the
one I want but I would trade it straight up because my perception of value is
biased. We're there money involved I would do the same - sell mine under
"market value" while paying over for the artist whom I like.

Simply put - if it will take 750 for you to part with your Bleriot, don't
accept anything less. There will be someone willing to pay just that. If you
are negotiable, then find the buyer willing to work with you to find the
maximum satisfactory situation for both of you.

2013-02-03 Thread Way Rebb
Cool, your headed through my stomping grounds…Livermore.   Wish I
could make it but getting out on weekend are hard enough.  Mines Road
is a good ride, lots of bicycle traffic on the weekends and not flat,
okay compared to Diablo, Hamilton or the coast it's flat.   You need
to get out to Tracy and beyond, say camp at Caswell State Part, to
experience flat flat lands.

Your route through Livermore looks good, I commute part of it daily.
One change I offer to suggest is where you get on Stanley Rd.
Stanley Rd is a constant work in progress and major commute artery to
Pleasanton  I just stay on the trail, go under the bridges, hang a BIG
left to keep on that trail.   This will empty on the new multi-use
path on Stanley and you are back on track. Much nicer than Stanley.
You can see this the map.

There is also camping at Del Valle recreational area.  You'll pass the
intersection to Del Valle when you are on Mines Road and Del Valle
Road happens to be the biggest climb for miles around…if you feel the
urge to do some climbing…

Ray

Sacramento. The folks at Edible Pedal sponsor it on the first Sunday of the

Needless to say, I spent the entire afternoon cleaning and polishing it.

[RBW] Re: Riv Rally East 2012

2013-02-03 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Steve:

Would like to plan 2 rides:

April 13-14: Delaware Water Gap Adventure Loop - 2-day credit
card/self-supported (on/off road), which features a scenic rural road ride
up the Delaware River on Day 1, with the Day 2 return leg including a mixed
hilly terrain route through High Point/Stokes State Forest and a finish
down along the Paulinskil rail trail (unpaved).

May 3-5: Riv Rally East (2-day with 3rd optional) - Blue Ridge area of
Virginia / Greenbriar River, West Virginia (tentative; still looking...)

I hope to have more definitive info within a week. Stay tuned.

[RBW] Re: Just some colorful Sam H. photos from today

2013-02-03 Thread Scot Brooks
Thanks for the kind words, Michael. The fenders don't say anything on them, but
the story is that they were manufactured around 1975 in Seattle. A bunch ended
up in a barn and the ones that survived were recently salvaged. There's a bit
of oxidation on some of the mounting hardware, but nothing to fret about.
They're steel so I might fancy them up with a Riv magnet. The zippered pouch
does indeed come with the bag and it's great for keeping my wallet/cell
phone/flashlight or whatever. It never leaks, even in Seattle rain, not a drop.
Not sure how, but that's my experience anyway.
