It's a different bike. I have the last "last one" SO in 60cm.

Good bike for someone. Still happy with mine.

Yeah, I like the colors. A local builder often uses a similar color scheme
on his signature bikes.

Are you using a clamp on/threadless stem on a threaded steerer tube? I've
read that that can lead to the steerer cracking but I don't know personally
if that is a realistic concern...

Yeah, that would be an option but most of them seem to have fairly short
HTs making it hard to get the bars where I'd want them although most of
them tend to have fender eyelets. The idea of a CF bike was just a passing
interest. It's not something I'm gonna get. Just not impressed.

One thing that is nice is that there are so many options for inexpensive
all-road steel bikes with nice clearance. The fit on my CC isn't ideal but
it works. All-City, Salsa, & Surly are all offering good all-road bikes.
Salsa has some new bikes coming out including a "gravel grinder." All-City
has some nice bikes. Surly is great and I'm curious if this will be the
year they release a disc brake cross bike although disc brakes aren't
something that really interest me.

I'm watching the tour as I respond to this and there was a pretty big
pile-up of riders. Lots of them standing around waiting for new bikes and
wheels. You gotta wonder, if they were on steel bikes more traditional
wheels (28s as opposed to CF deep dish) would they weather cashes better?
Would they be that much slower? I sorta doubt it. I think Grant has talked
about it how it would be neat if the riders didn't have support cars easily
available to them and had to fix their own flats. You'd see different
equipment for sure.

[RBW] Re: Review of "Just Ride."

2012-07-06 Thread Beth H
I read it and liked most of it. I think Grant goes to some places I
wouldn't, especially in the areas of food and helmets.
But I found it mostly informative and entertaining.

Reading it, I was reminded of how blessed I am to live in a city where
living car-free and relying on a bicycle for primary transportation is
actually possible -- and how far behind Portland so many cities remain in
developing human-scale infrstraucture.

I've tried nearly everything -- from Randonneuring to racing -- and these
days I find I am mostly content to ride my bike for transportation and
pleasure at slower speeds. Much of what's in the book applies to folks who
want to Just Ride. In the landscape of too many books and magazines
exhorting us to pour ourselves into lycra, strap on the heart-rate monitors
and emulate elite racers at every opportunity (so that bike shops can sell
more carbon-fiber racing bikes and recoup their investments on all that R &
D -- sorry, that's my bike industry cynicism at work), *Just Ride* is a
breath of fresh air.

Thanks to all. Previous owner (Joe) did all the color choosing. The
steerer was completely revamped to threadless so all should be good.
Did about 4.5 hours yesterday on the bike and it performed
flawlessly. Only concern is my "racy" saddle...good for a couple
hours then the butt starts asking "where's the Brooks"?

[RBW] Re: Betties and Sams and paint choices

2012-07-06 Thread JaxandPuzzle

In defense of the color - I am typically drawn to warm colors, and thought
about getting my Betty in a pink, orange or red. However, every Betty I saw
that had been custom painted didn't appeal to me for reasons unbeknownst to
me. The blue, while not something I'd normally choose, is awesome. It's an
unusual shade, blue-green, very serene. And it photographs extremely well!

I had all my lugs filled in red, and paired with cream Grand Bois Hetres,
honey saddle and grips, and hammered honjos. It looks really phenomenal
IMO. I waited more than a year to purchase my Betty and would have been
disappointed had they changed the color. Blue is evidently a great seller
for Riv. If your wife prefers another color, get a custom color! It's
already a very expensive bike, it may as well be the color she prefers.

Here are a few shots of my Betty, which I think looks different from most
even though it's the same color:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/10344790@N06/sets/72157630449833200/

My fiance and I are planning to purchase Bromptons this fall, and I think I
might go with the Turkish green to match Betty. My next bike after that
will probably be orange :-)

While I dont agree with Grant on some stuff (see helmets) I admire his
passion. All too often those who run a business can be worn down over time
by the tide of criticism and in an attempt to appeal to the biggest
audience possible and wind up sounding like some politician who cant just
take a stand on something. I would rather have someone I vehemently
disagree with than some syncophant who doesnt want to step on anyone's
toes. And as for the hating on CF I do remember reading that GP knew
someone who lost thier life due to a snapped CF fork so maybe it is a bit
more personal to him than just cost and other superficial concerns. Again,
I rode CF, and a SS conversion at that but as a bigger guy I was glad was
glad to see it go rather than worrying if that next pothole was going to be

[RBW] WTB: Bullmoose

2012-07-06 Thread Tim
I'll be getting my 58cm Hunqa in a couple of weeks (with the gray/kidney
paint!) and I'm looking for some RBW Bullmoose bars. I think they came in
two heights, with the 200mm being the taller ones. Those are the size I'm
looking for. Thanks.

Whoops! Found RBW's specs on the Bullmoose. They all have the same quill
and it is the extension that is either 150 or 200mm. I think I would prefer
the 150mm but am open to either. Thanks again!

Re: [RBW] What happened to "Silver" sidepulls?

The Silvers were a nicer polished version with salmon pads instead of black
ones. Maybe not enough of a difference to sell Silvers when 559's do the
job for less.

Re: [RBW] What happened to "Silver" sidepulls?

2012-07-06 Thread Mike
I imagine that the Silvers cost a bit more and RBW scaled back a bit. When
I was putting my Hilsen together the Silver brakes I received came in their
own box so I'm sure that, the polishing and the change of pads added an
extra cost. Still, I liked that the Silvers said "Silver" on them. I always
thought that was a nice name for a line of bicycle components.

It's nice to see the brake has found it's way on to bikes other than Rivs.
I know one of the Civia bikes is spec'd with it. It's a smart design and
works well. Using it off road on my Hilsen I've had a couple of moments
here and there when I've wondered if the brake is up to the challenge but
on the road it's been fine. I do like having the canti clearance with a
much easier set-up.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Poster--What to do now that you have it

2012-07-06 Thread Leslie
At the local Ben Franklin (half-price frame sale right now), I picked a frame
similar to the one my first Hiawatha Cyclery poster is in, but in cherry
instead of oak with a bit of matting, and non-reflective UV-protective
conservation glass, mounted, for about 80... Yeah, more than the poster itself,
but far less than what the poster will one day cost...

Have to admit, looking through DLG's catalog, there's several others I *really*
wish I could afford, but are past my range for posters...

[RBW] Shimano hubs.

2012-07-06 Thread Mike
So I was looking for some hubs tonight, checking Universal Cycles as a
start and they no longer have Shimano non-disc XT hubs. I checked the
Shimano website and it doesn't appear they're making them. It appears LX
hubs are still being made but they aren't listed on the Shimano website.
Deore hubs are still available although they appear to be made only in
black. That totally sucks. I've found XT hubs to be great and have them on
most of my bikes.

Furthermore, Shimano appears to have streamlined their V-brakes. I guess as
soon as road bikes are being made with disc brakes it'll be hard to find
road calipers.

It's not like this is the end of the world, there's plenty of options but
I've found the XT hubs to be a great value. I'll definitely be looking to
scoop up a set of LX hubs to put aside.

[RBW] WTB: rear derailleur

Slowly building up my first nice bike, a Rivendell Heron. I think I have
everything except for a rear derailleur. I'm using friction shifters and an

preferred, but as this is just a commuter / grocery-getter I'm not going to
be picky.
