[RBW] Re: OT(ish): Is there such thing as a modern mixte touring bike?

2012-05-19 Thread Rob H.
I believe Velo Orange is starting to design another Mixte bike. If
it's anything like the last one, it'll have a 1" threaded headset,
132.5mm rear spacing, and of course be a Cr-Mo frame, possibly lugged
with the double top tube (not the same as the Rivendell 2TT!). I'm
hoping they just give it a matte black color like the first
Polyvalent. I think that would look very good with the orange
lettering.

If 23mm tires and carbon is truly, in a zen way, fun for you: do it!
Mirrors, panniers, bags, steel? Do it.
650b fixed gear 70s racer to townie conversion? Do it! (I do!)

Much like underwear, as long as its not chafing others who cares what other

Handsome She-Devil. Wrong headset. And you dont need low-rider mounts
to use a low-rider rack. Clamp it. Origin8 has a sub 200 dollar mixte
frame and fork called the Mixer that shops can get.
ALso, if you don't want to spend much money at all, your local
craigslist probably has 50 old mixtes on there right now (depending on
where you live). Many Raleigh's, Motobecane's (both french and english
threaded so beware), and every once in a while an elusive Trek 420
Mixte. You will be able to sqeeze some decent rubber on there. I put
37 pasela's and fenders on an ex-girlfriend's motobecane. Just a
thought.

2012-05-19 Thread Linda G
I'll put in a good word for the Velo Orange Mixte, which was only
available for a short time a few years ago, but I read on their blog
that they are considering another production run. It takes 700 C
wheels, has lugs, 1" threaded headset, 3 front fork braze-ons and
good tire clearance. I don't know the largest tire it will fit with
fenders. I have 32's plus fenders with a fair amount of extra room. I
thought it was the best choice when compared to the Betty Foy and
Buena Vista . Price was comparable to Buena Vista. In keeping with the
subject matter of this list, I bought mostly Rivendell parts for it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Just Ride

2012-05-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Corollary to Justin's excellent point of 'whatever makes you happy is
nobody else's business', I think Grant is saying 'don't be bullied into
conformity by popular bike culture, particularly by unrealistic racing
fantasies'. Sometimes I think Grant likes to humorously needle even
conformity with the Riv aesthetic, which he does by running non-boutique,
sometimes even blatantly cheap components, having bikes that are well
"beausaged" (aka beat up), putting kickstand feet on his bar-end shifters,
etc. In any case, the point is to do your own thing and be skeptical of
others' opinions.

Underlying all this, there is the sense that the bike industry channels us
into a choice between "serious" sport bikes or geekier, less cool options,
with little in between. Of course, the bike world has changed a lot in the
past 5-10 years, and now there are choices in bicycles and gear available
to suit almost any taste or personality.

[RBW] Re: L-brackets - just do it!

2012-05-19 Thread Steve
I haven't posted in this group yet, but perhaps necessity is the
mother of de-lurking... This post inspired me to finally fit my 59 cm
Hilsen with some Berthoud fenders I've had sitting around for a while.
I've done everything except the L-bracket; now I'm sitting here
wondering whether anyone has tried drilling and tapping the bottom of
the brake bridge for direct fender mounting on a bike lacking the
braze-on? There isn't much material there, especially since Rivendell
keeps the brake pivots low for tire clearance... I'm less concerned
about the hole not holding thread than I am about weakening the brake
bridge. Has anyone tried anything similar or is this just folly?

[RBW] Hillborne vs Hillborne

2012-05-19 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
(those hoping for Spy vs Spy are going to be disappointed)

Two frames. Two years. One size. One maker.

One owner.

Both my green Hillborne purchased this year and my orange Hillborne purchased
in 2010 are 60cm Waterford-made canti-studded double top tube studies in joy,
comfort, and usefulness. Both have and/or will serve as commuting,
recreational, errand, and camping bikes. Both share five cockpits between them
(#6 awaits the "late May" of the Bosco) running the Nitto-RBW handlebar gamut.

However, I thought the differences in the frames themselves somewhat
interesting. So I submit for your perusal some trivia regarding the differences
between Samuel O. Hillborne (2010) and Samuel G. Hillborne (2012):

• seat tube bottle cage bosses are lower on green; this means more clearance
for a water bottle below the undertube, which I like. This may prevent me from
storing my lock on the seat tube (like I always have on orange) due to
chainring interference on green. But I don't think I would do that on green
anyway. In fact, I'm thinking of making orange like green in this regard; the
lock stored on the downtube works nicely.

• on green, fork dropouts are RBW pointy style, have two eyelets each, and have
a litigation-mitigation prong, as opposed to plain-ish round
un-pronged-or-lipped one-eyeleted on orange; this means slightly less
trickiness to mounting the platrack or low-rider rack, which I like... and
even-more-slightly more hassle taking the front wheel off, which I don't like.
But I'm not compelled to break out the file yet.

• orange has a brazed-on rear brake cable hanger whereas green came with a
separate one suspended from the seat tube collar bolt; in a sense green is a
"downgrade" here, though to me this means that green has less stuff I don't
care about (I use linear pulls), which I like in the abstract and could not
care less about in practice

--

I have ridden orange thousands of miles and green a few hundred. They feel the
same. I really can't tell the difference. Both are wonderful. Near Perfect For
Me. (Through careful consideration and much mulling I have scientistically
determined that my "Perfect Bike" is in fact a 61.125cm Hillborne. It would
ride exactly like my 60cm frames do but would have less exposed seatpost and
stem. And I could still straddle it, uh, "safely".)

I should note that my 2010 orange Hillborne was a *very* early model of its
kind. It might even be the first of its sub-species, though I've never verified
that. Whether "first" or merely "early", though, other owners of 2010 DTT
orange Waterford Hillbornes might find differences between mine and theirs.
*That* would be interesting.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] BB change

2012-05-19 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I have used a 113mm bottom bracket for my Hillbornes. I knew there was ample
clearance for my XD2 triple. And I was okay with the chain line and its general
behavior.

But I was inspired by recent group posts to see if a 110mm would work on my
frame with my crank. It does! And it does improve my chain line and allows my
front derailer to operate more vertically throughout its range of motion. This
means less trimming. It was not something that bothered me significantly
before... I'd only even think about it on the few occasions I'd be severely
cross-chained. But now it's even easier to find a spot where I can span the
range of my IRD 7-speed freewheel in my middle chain ring without raking
against my IRD alpina-d front derailer's cage.

Bear in mind the specifics. Many of them might matter:

Shimano UN55 bottom brackets
Waterford 60cm Hillborne
Sugino XD2 triple 24-36-46
crank torqued roughly to spec
IRD Defiant 7-speed freewheel
Phil "IRD" freewheel hub
IRD alpina-d "braze-on" front derailer
separate derailer clamp from RBW

YMMV!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] BarSack and Rack (F-15) tips

2012-05-19 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I've used Nitto's F-15 rack for a while now with my BarSack. Not continuously
but often. In fact, it's the intermittent nature of its usage that led me to
these notions.

1) Replace the M8 bolts in the ends of the fork with 8mm "set screws" 30mm in
length. Then you can use 8mm wing nuts to tool-lessly secure the bag on or
remove the bag from the fork tines.

2) Replace the M6 bolts that attach the fork to the handles mounts with 6mm set
screws 20mm? 25mm? In length to allow you to tool-lessly attach/detach the fork
to/from those mounts using 6mm wing nuts.

If you always remove your bag from your F-15 when you leave your bike, then (1)
has no real downside. Just keep the wing-nuts in your bag.

Unless you remove the fork from the handlebar clamps regularly, then (2) is not
really useful. Even then, well it just means you don't have to have a 4mm Allen
wrench to do something trivial. And, depending on the mount of the clamps to
your bar, attaching/detaching the fork can be somewhat tedious with the set
screws since they stick up all the time. (That's why shorter may be better.)
Additionally, the wing-nuts do make the fork easier to remove for thieves (more
likely vandals). That said, it's nice not to have to find that tool all the
time if you remove the fork often.

Set screws are simply fully threaded pillars with socket inserts on one end
that an Allen wrench can fit into. As an example, see the metric set screws and
wing-nuts at BoltDepot online.

Oh, and the cotton shoulder strap offered by Laplander Bags works really well
with the BarSack. I can't remember if my BarSack came with a shoulder strap or
not. If it did I'm pretty sure it was nylon. Which is okay and fully
functional. I just really prefer the feel of cotton, even though nylon takes up
less space and probably weighs less. Surely relative strength isn't an issue
for the BarSack or similar bags.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

You might consider a 106 to 107 also...I know its only 3-4mm
difference but that is what I have on mine with a seven speed cassette
and spacer and it works nicely with even better alignment and shifting
IMHO.

[RBW] Re: BB change

2012-05-19 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I tried a 107 once and couldn't even get good torque on the crank against the
taper without interference from the bottom
bracket itself. In short, my crank didn't work with that 107 bottom bracket,
completely independent of the frame. Just weird.

Assuming that was a fluke (say, incorrectly labelled length or taper or just a
bad BB) and none of that applies, though, I look at the clearance in my 110's
installation and believe I'd lack confidence with a 107's clearance. There are
a couple millimeters, surely. But with the 107... well, these parts would have
to move *very* little relative to each other for me not to worry about my chain
stay and inner ring meeting.

It's so close that I think a 108 might work but a 107 wouldn't.

Of course, that could just be my rationalization of Phil products kicking in...

[RBW] Pedal strike and platform pedals

2012-05-19 Thread Rex Kerr
So, I've been slowly warming to this idea of using platform pedals. I
actually compromised and went half way, using cream colored PowerGrip
straps that Rivendell was selling at the time and the MKS touring pedals
that they sell. This setup works fairly well for me and I'm starting to
prefer it over having to wear dedicated shoes, even though I was wearing
Shimano sandals. That said, after years of using tiny little Frog pedals I
got accustomed to how much cornering clearance I had and don't remember the
last time that I experienced pedal strike [except for one time on my fixed
gear]. Now, though, I seem to do it at least once per ride, even on turns
that seem like nothing whatsoever! Worse, a few times I've grabbed the toe
of my sandal and flipped it down! (I sure hope I don't break a toe or tear
my awesome Chaco sandals!)

So, now I'm wondering... are there other paltform pedals that give a little
more ground clearance? Is it just something I'll have to learn to deal
with? Are the King Grips any better [for clearance]? How about the RMX
sneaker pedal with its corners rounded off?

How long did it take you (if you converted to platforms) to become
accustomed to the reduced clearance?

Re: [RBW] Pedal strike and platform pedals

Pedal strike is more of a "habit" problem than a pedal problem, at least
for me. You start to learn what you can and can't get away with on
corners. Narrower pedals definitely help, but not as much as you might
think.

Hmmmweird.would think the diff to be only 10 -12mm since the
thickness of the pedal cage is about one inch with the axle running
through the center. On those froggy pedals the axle is the same basic
size and so wouldn't be more than 6 -7 mm farther from the ground.
(I'm curious, maybe do some actual measuring, maybe its more) I own a
Trucker with 175 cranks and a new Hillborne with the same, using
platforms and never have hit the ground. My 'SO' has 170's and
inexpensive bear trap style pedals and never have I hit pavement.
Maybe keep your turning side pedal up or get 165-170 cranks if you
like to pedal through corners. I only pedal through corners on my
recumbent.never on my uprights.

[RBW] Re: Pedal strike and platform pedals

2012-05-19 Thread Blindrobert
I wouldn't worry about it. If you're riding a Riv you probably aren't
racing...don't pedal through the corners and keep your outside crank
in the down position if you are turning agressively at high speed (you
should do that regardless of what pedal you are using). I've used the
MKS touring pedal on my AHH and Bombadil for years and never had a
problem. I have done long tours, everyday riding around town, fast-
paced but casual group rides. It's just not an issue. It's not an
issue on my Fraces or Waterford fixed gear bikes either - same setup:
MKS touring pedals with clips and straps.

A few months ago I put a pair of grip kings on my AHH and haven't had
any problem with that pedal either. I'm sure you could make the pedal
strike if you wanted, but it would be the result of poor riding
judgement rather than a shortcoming of the equipment. Platforms=one
less obstacle to getting on your bike and riding it. I say go for
it! Good luck!

It's more than that though, because the frogs end half way through the
width of the shoe, so at the most extreme end you have about two inches
extra clearance... I should measure the difference in angle.

Thing is, I don't pedal through sharp turns, never have, but there are some
places where it feels like I'm hardly turning at all, where it doesn't
trigger my "don't pedal, keep that foot up" instinct where I'm hitting
now... I'm frequently shocked that it was enough lean to cause a strike.
I'm mostly curious how long it took other people to get accustomed to the
difference. Apparently I had a well honed sense of how much clearance I
had before and was missing by less than an inch!

[RBW] Issue mounting Marathon Racers

2012-05-19 Thread rw1911
I don't think it's me, maybe it is, but these are the most difficult
tires I have ever dealt with. Normally when I think of tires being
difficult to mount, they're really tight and require multiple levers
and a lot of force to get on.

My problem is the opposite. These things are so loose that it's a 15
minute procedure of getting the tire on the rim, a little air, check/
seat the bead, a little more air, repeat, repeat. So the tire is now
mounted and the bead looks evenly seated all around. I cruise down
the driveway and back up through the yard. Bang! the tire blows.

It's obvious the bead popped out and pinched the tube. I think OK,
I'll just throw in a new tube. Checking, airing, checking, airing.
The bead let's go at about 50 PSI and I just lost another tube, my
last spare and the local shops are closed tomorrow. I'm more than a
bit agitated/bummed.

Apologies for the long rant to get to this point... Has anyone else
experienced such difficulties with these tires? 35c Marathon Racer's
on Velocity Synergy rims.

Re: [RBW] Issue mounting Marathon Racers

2012-05-19 Thread Peter Morgano
I have had this problem. Had to put alot of air into the tube and then
seat it, alot more than I usually would to get it to be tighter around the
wheel. Then pump it up, deflate and repump a few times with the wheel on
the upside down or suspended bike to make sure it wasn't pinched. Pain in
the ass for sure, use a little baby powder to help it slip around the bead
rather than being pinched. This technique worked for me.

If you want to cook, bring a lighter. lol. Learned that one this weekend.

Also, I suggest leaving earlier than you really think you need to. When I
leave later in the day and feel pressed for time to get somewhere to make
camp before it's dark, I spend my time worrying about the time and trying
to go faster, which isn't really my idea of having fun. I am new to this

I pedal strike on occasion on my AHH with 175 cranks and king grips. I have
another bike that needs new cranks, so I'm leaning towards moving the
current 175 AHH cranks over and getting 170s for Homer. But like others
have said... I think it's more a user error than a problem with the bike.

Re: [RBW] Issue mounting Marathon Racers

2012-05-19 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've found Big Apples, both vanilla and Liteskins, to be supremely
loose on both Alex DH19 and SnoCat SL 44 mm rims; so loose that,
installed before any air is in the tube, they will literally fall off
the rim if the wheel is held sideways. But adding air, carefully so
that the beads remain seated, has always kept them in place without
any problems with the tube: I just have to pump, inspect bead, pump,
inspect bead, and repeat until the tire is at normal pressure.

Now "normal pressure" for these tires, used by me, is anywhere from 12
to 35 lb -- 50 lb would make them ride as hard as stone. Usual
"compromise" pressures, when I want them to offer cushion and float
offroad but don't want excessive wallow on pavement, is approx. 18/23.
When I want max speed on pavement, say 25/30.

Point being that, as "falling off" loose as they are, they do stay one
if you have carefully kept any eye on the bead while inflating.

[RBW] Re: Pedal strike and platform pedals

2012-05-19 Thread Grant Petersen
I agree with all...but happen to have micro-knowledge about some
particulars. The Grip King pedal has the best clearance of any pedal
we sell...was designed to win and does. Much of this is obvioius, but
here it is all at once: Pedal clearance is only a function of
how far the pedal sticks out (related to crank Q-Factor, of course)
crank length
pedal cage height
bottom bracket height---which itself comes from frame drop and wheel
radius (radius minus drop is bb height).

The CPSC Consumer Products Safety Commission requires (or used to; I
dunno if it's changed) 25-degrees of lean before contact, and we have
a spreadsheet that lets us plug in any combination with any of the
pedals we offer, and so...a Roll-y Pol-y* tire on an A. Homer Hilsen
with 175mm cranks and MKS Touring pedals doesn't quite make it, but
once you're up to Jack Brown territory and any pedal other than the
Touring, then all's well.

But---as everybody has said--it's mostly a matter of learning the
limits and pedaling within 'em.

[RBW] Just got back from a 10 mile ride...

2012-05-19 Thread Peter M
And boy are my arms tired. Out for a late night ride so rode over to
the shore path but by the time I got back my arms were killing me. I
have been juggling a few different bikes lately but my latest setup is
a 56cm Homer (650b-Hetres) with a 10cm technomic and Albatross bars,
about 1 inch above the saddle. I rode MTBs for most of my youth then
fixies for a while with bullhorn bars so not sure if it is an issue of
the bars being too close or not. I finally did a proper measurement
and have a 85pbh and am 5'11" with a longish torso. I was looking at
a Bombadil so I could stay with 650b and to possibly to try and strech
me out a bit but was thinking that the 52 would be basically the same
as what I have now but the 56 might be a bit tight with standover. Was
told by Rivendell that I could go either way but I ride in NYC so I
do need to straddle the top tube every now and then at the longer
traffic lights. I cant see doing any actual MTBing outside of fire
trails so not so concerned about bail outs over the top tube. I am
throwing myself to the knowledge of the group here yet again to see if
anyone has some wise words. Thank you all.

I suggest you stop juggling bicycles and your arms will stop hurting.

Or maybe start by juggling balls or beanbags, then clubs, then maybe
chainsaws or bowling balls. It takes a lot of practice before you start
with bicycles. By that time your arms will be used to it and they won't
hurt as much.

Good luck- Mike

I tried Albas on several different bikes, and even though I have short
arms, the reach-back was too much. I felt cramped and my hands/arms
hurt.

[RBW] Thank you

2012-05-19 Thread Manuel Acosta
Nothing beats New Bike Day. Rode the new bike to work. It was funny because
my student's seem more excited about the bike then I am. LIke any new
shiny thing with wheels, all the kids wanted to ride it. I'm not good at
describing the feel of a new steel bike so I'll quote some of the things
the kids say. " So smooth", " The pedals are smart", " This bike feels so
right!" was the general conversation after students took turns riding it
around the school. So since school got out early I took the long way home.
Decided to see if there was a way to bike from Ed Levin to Mission Peak.
There is but not an easy way. The maiden bike voyage turned into a maiden
hike the bike uphills. But the new bike got dirty so all was well.

It's kind of hard to describe how guilt ridden I felt having to receive
such a nice gift. Call it my stubbornness to accept help or my pride of
having to try and deal with my mistakes on my own. Having gotten to talk to
a bunch of people on the forum in person they really helped me understand
that it's okay to accept other people's help. Grant put in better words
"Everybody who helps you will be getting more out of it than they're
giving, so you can legitimately think of this as a gift the givers are
giving to themselves." It's interesting to note that despite how amazing
this gesture is that the lovely folks at Rivendell HQ didn't make a huge
deal about it. Which made me feel a lot more comfortable about accepting
the bike, since it was done a month ago. (alas I don't check my voice
messages) It was funny because of how awkward I felt during the last few
months about the bike I didn't really have the courage to ask about the
progress or if it was even done. I figured when the bike was ready and the
time was right it would be done.
This bike is more meaningful to me knowing that so many people were willing
to contribute in so many ways. It's hard to even express a really thank you
over a simple forum, so I'll just do it through pictures.

Because pictures proved how grateful I am.

IMHO, A-bars work best when they are significantly above the saddle and way
forward. The Nitto non-dlx Technomic works great for this. If that's what
you have, pull it up some more, and then maybe swap out for a 12cm. Here's
what mine looked like after I went all
in.
Prior to that w/ a Tech-Dlx maxed out about an inch or so above saddle was
ok, but not great .
It really took that extra height and reach to make it just right. Looks
kinda' funny, but it works great!
