I'm definitely going with at least one paper book since I don't have a

a great read for the start of the summer and I can't wait.

Bill-

I thought about a sprung saddle - I've always been intrigued by the B72
actually - but I'm quite surprised/happy with how much extra "spring" the
bike has now with the slightly larger, slightly lower pressure, and more
compliant (can't say "supple" any more!) Paselas, compared to the JB's.

Of course, I could just be stressing the frame and fork right up to its
limits!

[RBW] recent Atlantis changes

2012-02-23 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
For Atlantis frames made between, say 2003 and 2008-ish, I usually have a
pretty good eye for estimating the approximate vintage because of my
experience selling them and working on them during those years. Earlier
this week, we got a new 61cm Atlantis in for a customer. I noticed that it
has some different dropouts and rack braze-ons on the fork and seat stays,
not to mention lug detail variations compared to older examples. But above
all that, when we tried to put a standard SRAM chain on, the chain was very
close to being too short. I wondered about chainstay length, which turns
out to be a long 47 cm. I recall the older models having 43.5-44.5 cm
chainstays. Just thought this might be worth a mention for academic
purposes.

[RBW] Uber-Tall Cockpit Dilemma

2012-02-23 Thread Mike S
Now that I've been riding my ridiculously perfect-fitting 64cm Sam
Hillborne a bit, it's become clear to me that my 64cm Quickbeam w/
Dirtdrop stem & moustache bars gives me less extension than is ideal.
I impulsively bought the QB when it first debuted, and I should have
gotten a 66 or 68 over the 64. Also, using the Nitto lugged seatpost
as far back as possible, and it's still not enough reach.

In addition to not being enough reach, the Dirtdrop is at the minimum
insertion line and it's only about even with the saddle, and I'd like
it higher. The option I am most in favor of right now would be
replacing the DD with a 13cm tallux, in the belief that a technomic
would give me more horizontal extension than a DD, and the 3cm
additional quill length would make up for the loss of up-angle. I'm
also considering being slightly reckless and raising it above the min.
insertion mark if I can't get enough height in regulation.

The other option would be to get the stem extension Riv sells and
throw a technomic in there I guess, but the thought of the something
so kludgy on an otherwise excessively nice setup is a little
horrifying for my perfectionism to bear.

I'm just wondering if there are any of you tall dudes who've had
similar issues with getting bikes to fit, and if my hypothesis will
actually work in achieving more extension AND stem height. Thanks for
any input!

[RBW] Re: Uber-Tall Cockpit Dilemma

2012-02-23 Thread William
Mike

I don't have any tactical help to give you besides encouragement to try
whatever your gut tells you. I will say that the risk associated with
running your stem above the max height line is that the wedging part that
is expanding the steerer is at the part where the steerer is weakened by
the threads being there. The risk is you literally pulling the top of your
steertube off. It's a really rare thing that those of us that have worked
at shops have seen maybe a handful of times per decade. That failure,
though rare, is almost the fastest way to get your head on the ground. So
the risk is small, but the penalty is large. I would not go more than a
couple mm above the min insertion line.

What I do have is empathy, as the process of buying, setting up and riding
bigger Rivendells has finally led me to conclude that my custom racing bike
is too small, and I'm parting it out. I'm not saying that you should punt
on your QuickBeam, but I am saying that I know what it's like for a good
fitting bike to ruin another bike that had SEEMED to fit right for a long
long time. Best of luck with your efforts.

2012-02-23 Thread Peter F
Can't speak for Brad, but I lock my Atlantis outside short term when
I'm running errands. Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems yet. At
least not with the bike itself. Had my headlight stolen once because I
forgot and left it on the bike. And I take any saddlebags, handlebar
bags off when lock it too. I generally just use one of the Kryptonite
NYC u-locks, usually through the front wheel and frame, but if I'm
leaving it for a longer time I'll also use a heavy duty cable lock
through the rear wheel and frame too.

My impression is that bike theft rates vary widely from neighborhood
to neighborhood. But maybe I've just been lucky too.

I figure the Atlantis is for riding. If it gets stolen or vandalized,
well, it would be pretty annoying and an inconvenience for sure, but
just another excuse to save my pennies and go shopping at Rivbike.com
again.

Thanks for the suggestion, but as the DD has an extension of 82mm,
that wouldn't be helping me. I could live with the bars being level
with the saddle, but a couple centimeters more extension would be
really awesome. I'm not even sure that a technomic has that much more
than a DD, but if it does, I may just go for the stem riser and
technomic option.

If only I had fully downed the Grant Petersen buy-a-size-up Kool-Aid

That's an encouraging report, Brad! I guess I'll start with short grocery
runs to Tribeca or Chinatown, once my bike is ready. I'm in the process of
changing out the handlebar setup and re-cabling everything (and missing the
good weather). I bought a Kryptonite New York lock, though not the model
with the chain (it's heavy enough without the chain!).

I think I remember seeing your saddle cover. So it actually helps to put
on a cover? I have to find the cover that came with the Brooks box.

What LSB do you recommend? Bike Works by the Williamsburg Bridge is my
favorite.

[RBW] Re: recent Atlantis changes

2012-02-23 Thread dougP
Could you post some photos when you get the bike built up? More rack
mounts is a plus. My '03 Atlantis came with nothing on the fork, a
situation I've since remedied. I seem to recall a while back there
were going to be hourglass mounts on the fork for a Nitto mini-rack.
Have low rider mounts been added?

[RBW] recent Atlantis changes

2012-02-23 Thread Peter Pesce
I used to think the lack of consistency along models years was frustrating, but
now I think it's sort of charming. The variation over time reminds me that real
people are responsible for Rivs, not robots.
However, chain stays that are are so long that a standard chain won't wrap a
48/32 ( or whatever) is problematic! I guess the super long-n-low Rosco will be
a single speed, or you'll just buy 2 chains?

I think Bike Works is great. I also like B's Bikes in Williamsburg,
which is a little closer to my house. Both (in my experience) will
treat you well whether you're buying something stupid like a spoke.

Seat covers work for me. Keeps the seat dry when my butt isn't on it
and makes it look cheap to discourage thieves (it helps that they
develop holes that I patch with ragged pieces of duck tape).

I just threaded a nut on the long bolt and sawed off 3/4 of the length with

threads. I used a ratchet to tighten the bolt on the bike. I also did away
with the top plate since my Kogswell has a kickstand plate. Used a big

[RBW] recent Atlantis changes

2012-02-23 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
No low rider mounts. That would be nice. The Tubus Duo is a favorite rack of
mine. There are threaded holes in the top of the crown. I have a few ideas for
that, but maybe there's a devoted rack? The front dropouts are like little
satan heads with horns sticking out.

The seat stays have three hourglass braze-ons in each side - top, middle, and
bottom - in addition to the double eyelets on the dropouts.

The chainstay length with an XT long cage rder and a 46/32(or 34) combo maxed
out a 114L SRAM chain. I don't think it would have worked with a 48t big ring
and/or a 36t big cog. But the heel clearance with panniers must be amazing!

Sorry. No pics, and the Atlantis has left the building.

[RBW] Re: recent Atlantis changes

2012-02-23 Thread dougP
Three hourglass braze-ons on the seat stays sounds like a couple of
them got mis-placed. And haven't there been other models with the
threaded holes in the fork crown?

For tours where the bike gets shipped & assembled at the start,
bolting on front racks when the fork has dedicated mounts is a snap.
I've also got hourglass mounts for the little Nitto front rack. Sure
beats all the futzing around with clamps when you're sticking a bike
together far from home.

About those long chainstays, think about the foot size of the rider of
a 61 cm. On my 58, my size 11s clear panniers but I've got the Nitto
Big Back rack which lets the bags stay well back. A shorter rack or
bigger bags like some of the Ortleibs could be close.

[RBW] Drop Bar Newbie Qs

2012-02-23 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
I've always had straight or upright bars. Went with mustache bars when I
bought my Hilsen in September. I've been riding the M's for half a year and
don't hate them but haven't fallen in love with them either. I've decided
it's time to try a different handlebar. I suspect I may be on the path to
being an early adopter of the New Bar. In the mean time... I've been
sitting on a 48cm noodle bar bought off the list here. Today I removed the
M's and put on the noodles. I tried them out with 2 stems... 7cm and 9cm.

My riding style/pace is pretty casual so I imagine most of my riding will
be on the tops or on the hoods.

With the 7cm stem the tops are kinda too close but not deal-breader bad,
the hoods are fine and the drops are close/comfortable enough that I could
see myself using them.

With the 9cm stem the tops are in a great place, the hoods seem like a good
aggressive position, but the drops are so far forward that I'm not sure I
would use them hardly ever.

These are all first impressions from a couple laps around the block by a
guy who's only ever ridden drops a few times on friends' bikes.

I would love to hear people's opinion's on balancing the aggressive vs
leisurely positions/set-up on a drop bar. This may all be a moot point If
I go with the New Bar next month but it's fun to fiddle with for now.

[RBW] Re: Drop Bar Newbie Qs

2012-02-23 Thread eflayer
Noodles are a lovely shape, but the drops are pretty deep. I had them on a
number of bikes, but nearly never rode in the drops. Now all my bikes are
sporting compact bars from FSA. The reach to tops and hoods is definitely
shorter than Noodles, but with shorter reach to the drops, and more
extension of the drop rearward, for the first time in my later years, I
ride in the drops on a regular basis. I sometimes wish for a longer flat
section approaching the hoods, but FSA Omega compact bars suit me quite
well. Omegas are made only for 31.8 bars, but Soma and Origin 8 and others
make them for 26.0. Oh yeah, some think compact bars don't look cool and
traditional and I agree. But we make choices.

Smitty,

I'm in a similar situation with Noodles. I'm pretty sure the stem
length on my Sam is right for me at 8 cm (down from 10), but I can't
figure out if I want to adjust the height up or down.

As it is, the hoods are good but perhaps a bit high. But I wouldn't
mind the drops a little higher.
I was thinking about Albas, but maybe a more differently shaped drop
bar would make more sense.

I'm transitioning to drop bars for the rando season, and I've decided that
the drops are there for wind and stretching the back only (for me). I
generally ride on the hoods, or on the flat curves on my similar Nitto B115
(deep drops). The flats to hoods give me as much real-estate as my Porteur
bars (albeit stretching the other way). With enough bar height, and the
right reach, I'm fine in the neck and hands dept, and always have the drops
if I'm heading into a nasty headwind and need to get more aero, or more
power.

Yes - I will likely be there if it's not snowing :)

[RBW] Thief of Expensive Bicycles Caught in N.Ca

2012-02-23 Thread Rex Kerr
There seems to have been a lot of postings here about bicycles stolen from
garages lately. If you're in northern CA you might want to read this:

http://www.chicoer.com/breakingnews/ci_20030958

Police said the bicycles, some selling for more than $8,000, came from
several burglaries around the north state
[...]
Victims who have had expensive bicycles stolen from their residence is
asked to contact property crimes detectives at 897-5825. A serial number,
license number or specific identifying information is requested.

*(the area code for Chico is 530)*
